Chase Flu Clinic 2019 submitted by Chase & District Health Services Foundation
The Chase Flu Clinic was held at the Community Hall on Thursday, November 14th marked by a considerable larger participation than in previous years. Five hundred and three (503) people took part in this program between the hours of 10:00 am – 3:00pm, which is an increase of approximately 17.3% over last year’s total. The annual Flu Clinic is sponsored by Interior Health and each year it is planned for and staffed by local employees of the Chase & District Health Center, along with a considerable number of volunteers. This year special thanks goes to members of the Chase Heat hockey team for setting up the tables and chairs, and to the Chase Volunteer Fire Department for their assistance in taking down and storing the tables and chairs. The volunteers who were on hand to assist the participants to enter, be
seated, observe the clients for 15 minutes and direct the clients to the nursing stations are essential to the smooth operation and movement of the public. These people are an invaluable resource and we salute them for their help and support. The Chase & District Health Services Foundation hosted the refreshment table, assisted this year by members of the newly formed Chase Community Services Society and our resident full-time Community Paramedicine Program Coordinator, Paramedic Sue Murray. Donations amounted to $107.80 which will go back into Community projects. The Health Services Foundation thanks all those community members who attended the clinic, and those individuals who sponsored and staffed the nursing stations, and in particular all of the volunteers who were involved.

Adopt a Senior This Christmas Tess Jablonksi, a young woman from Chase, has taken the initiative to start an "Adopt a Senior" campaign this year for Christmas. "For some Seniors it is a very hard and sad time and a lot are financially strapped so I just want to be able to put a smile on their face for a day," said Tess. There is a tree set up at EYE CANDY Endless Emporium (717 Shuswap Ave) with a Senior's wish list on gift tags. People come in and grab a gift tag and fulfill
the wish list and bring it back to EYE CANDY wrapped. The Senior will be able to open it on Christmas. If you do not have time to shop or are not here Tess will accept cash donations to fulfill gift tags and buy some essentials to take to the seniors home here in Chase. Her email is j ablonsk i.tess@ gmail.com and phone is 778-2576555.

2017. It’s been a welcome purpose-built addition to places in town where children can be out of doors, get some exercise, enjoy camaraderie and acquire skills. Although supported by the Kraft Heinz Project Play programme and generous local donations, the project ran short of funds before completing all the features of the skate park. To this end, Chase’s Helping Hand group has undertaken fundraising for the last few additions needed to finalize the skate park design. And to kick off the their efforts and add to your holiday season festivities, Helping Hand has arranged a dance at the Chase Community Hall for December 14 featuring the popular band “Stiff Whiskers” whose talented members, all of a ‘certain age,’ hail from the North Shuswap. The group’s Jody Evans, Ryan Murry, Jim Leduc and Rob Van Sprang bring a broad range of professional music experience to their performances and are currently the often-called-upon house band at The Hub in Scotch Creek. “Stiff Whiskers” covers genres from Classic Rock, Blues and a touch of Country—all extremely well done and guaranteed to set toes a-tappin’. As Jody Evans says, “Our goal is to get people dancing or singing (or both) to every song we play.” In addition to great music, the event’s organizers will offer a complimentary ‘build your own gourmet burger’ as a snack mid evening. Full bar service and a special loonie basket raffle will also be part of the night’s amenities. Details of your ‘ticket to ride’ are: • Advance tickets - $15 per person • At the door - $25 per person • Tickets available at PharmaChoice, Eye Candy, and the Railside Restaurant • Doors Open at 8:00 pm • Music from 8:30 pm to 12:30 am • Burgers at 10:30 pm See ya there!

Checking Out the Chase Library submitted by Andy Finnen, Branch Head, Chase Library Hello from the busy little library on Shuswap Avenue. I thought some gift ideas based around books, that are fairly easy and super fun, would be a timely piece for our wonderful Chase Sunflower. If you have a fan of graphic novels, a sketch pad, some funky pencils and a How to Draw book of any variety, might do the trick. If you are picking out a story book for a little one, buy a corresponding activity to go along with it that may encourage imagination and play. For instance, a story about dinosaurs would go perfectly with some dinosaur puppets or a 3D dinosaur puzzle. For the teen who has a favourite movie series based on a book, you could try getting a special edition of the book or see if it is available as a graphic novel.
If your bestie or partner fell in love with reading because of a children's classic, scoop them up a copy for their stocking. If you have a trip planned next year, a fiction or information book about your destination are great options. Better yet, a cookbook and apron might be fun. We are a society that is becoming more and more aware of our environment and we look for ways to do better. It's okay to find something second hand, clean it up and make it special too. Happy and healthy days to you. If you need suggestions on new and popular titles for 2019, just let us know. Chase Library 250.679.3331

Obituary Edeltraut Maria Agathe Torbohm On November 29, 2019, our family and community lost a loving Mutti, Oma, and wonderful friend, when Edeltraut (Trudy) Torbohm passed away peacefully at the age of 94 years with her family by her side. She was predeceased by her husband Heinz Torbohm in 2005. Edeltraut was born in RothflieB, OstpreuBen, Germany on September 29, 1925. Heinz and Edeltraut immigrated to Canada in l957 to pursue their Canadian Dream. Her children left behind to remember her are Heinz Jr (Karen), Manfred (Maureen), Harry (Jane), Sherry (Ryan) Stade, 14 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren. Trudy had a genuine strong work ethic in the service industry where she interacted with the public at the same time balancing family life. She had her own catering business, worked in restaurants, in the bakery, and ran her own business at Jade Mountain. She also volunteered a large part of her later years at the curling club in Chase, mostly running the kitchen and organizing banquets. Trudy loved laughing and socializing with friends, travelling, gardening, and most of all celebrating and preparing for family occasions. The family wishes to express their sincerest gratitude to Parkside for making her stay so comfortable. The interactions with the staff were most often the highlight of her day. Also special thanks to the nurses and staff of R.I.H and Chase D & T Centre for the care of our mom. Trudy will be missed by her family and everyone she touched in her travels through life. “Auf Wiedersehen Frau Edeltraut Torbohm” Condolences may be expressed to the family from www.myalternatives.ca

Cliff was born in New Westminster, BC on July 24, 1921. His younger years were spent in Vancouver where he fell in love with the ocean and fishing. As a young man he moved north to work in remote logging camps and mills. He enjoyed the community and outdoors of Northern BC so much that he stayed and in 1958 he opened Atchison Refrigeration in Dawson Creek where he served the community for over 40 years. He retired to Gabriola Island in 1991 where he enjoyed spending time on his boat out on the ocean. In 2008 he and Eleanor moved to the community of Chase where they have spent many happy years. snack, (which I will provide) running in the gym and of course learning through our play,” said Kary. This week she will be giving away a beautiful Christmas Wreath, everyday you attend, you can enter your name in the draw at the door, and a winner will be chosen on Friday Dec. 13th! Common Questions About StrongStart by Kary Do I have to stay with my child? Yes, a parent, guardian or the child's caregiver needs to attend with the child during their play at StrongStart Is there a cost to register? NOPE! Its all FREE, snack and coffee/tea are provided as well Do I need to arrive at 8:40 and stay all morning until 11:30? NO! StrongStart is a drop-in program. Families are welcome to come and go at anytime, but I do recommend being there before 10am as after that we clean up, play in the gym, have snack and story. The toys are put away at 10:30 so arriving before 10 would give children time for free play! What if I'm planning on homeschooling? Still come and play!! If your child is under the age of 5, then StrongStart is a great place to play, learn important social skills and make some news friends! What do I do if I want to attend? Simple, just come!! I'm located in Haldane Elementary School, classroom #3. Go through the front doors by the office, turn right down the hallway until you reach classroom #3 then come on in to play. On your first visit a registration paper will be sent home for parents to complete. How old does my child have to be? StrongStart is for children 5 and under!! Yep even newborns, its a great place for Mom's to attend and meet other Moms. Most of the activities are geared towards 3 and older, but many of the toys are suitable for all ages, plus there is a quiet little baby area! What if I have more questions? Call the school 250-679-3269 or text Kary @ 250-574-7108 or you can email me at kpittendreigh@sd73.bc.ca

TWISTING THE NIGHTS AWAY by Scott Koch
Twisted twigs apparently got their start in the 1830’s. From 1850 to the 1930’s the Mi’kmaq from Nova Scotia were the experts. The most expensive stick out there currently is an 1850 “Mic Mac” worth $4.2 million, that would kill a team’s stick budget! From maple, willow, yellow birch, ash which were extremely heavy, durable and unforgiving, we now see very light snap happy carbon fibre products killing team budgets. So as you guessed this isn’t an article on an old dance craze, its about modern day ballet on ice and what helps win the contest. A twist of the wrist, a shaft snapping slapper, a toe drag, a deflection or a back hander are a few of the ways to put the bisquit in the basket for a game winning goal. The HEAT of late have discovered that all the above have been means to 5 straight victories. Added to the twig tricks the duo of Vince Bennedetto and Dylan Barton have torqued, twisted, dove, snatched, batted, pounced and squeezed the vulcanized disk while standing guard between the pipes. At weekend’s end the team had scored at a rate of 3.8/game (95 goals), while allowing 2.84 against (71). The Creston Valley THUNDER CATS dropped into the local Chaos Castle Friday the 29th. The track meet that ensued was entertaining for the fans with the action fast paced, skilled and with very little mayhem. Rookie power forward Trevor Kennedy got the party started, helped by his line mates Breckin Erichuk and Hayden Wiebe. The trio struck again with less then 2 minutes left in the 1st period, Erichuk aided and abetted by Kennedy and Wiebe. In the 2nd both teams raced, rattled and rolled but the tenders between the pipes shut the doors. In the final 20 minutes Colton Nikiforuk shone in the spotlight with a pair of counters 43 seconds apart. The first “Nifty Niki” was

Local phenom Tyson “Lamps” Lampreau added to the lead with a helper from Hughes. Brandon “Grimmer” Gremaud popped in a man advantage tally from Matthew Poole for Chase Country Christmas and Evan Vinterlik, after 20 minutes 3-0 for the visitors. In the 2nd the Cariboo crew got one back, its now 3-1. The 3rd period saw PLUS Century City get 2 more and tie the contest at 3-3. However, Captain Watson with 50 seconds left, fired a fierce and focused slapper from the point assisted by Erichuk and Kennedy. The (excluding sale items) end score 4-3, with tender Barton stopping 34 of 37 to star in this battle. 741 Shuswap Ave, Four available and earned points to give Chase, BC the HEAT 7 points of breathing room from the HARDWARE AND 3rd place WRANGLERS RENTALS in the Doug Birks Division standings.
