Chase 2018 – Takin’ Care of Business

T

by Carolyn Parks-Mintz, Author, Journalist & Freelance Writer

he Village of Chase has been one busy place over the last year and a half or so. New shops have opened, new attractions have been built, and new entrepreneurs have taken over established businesses. The downtown core has welcomed a number of fresh ventures, adding to the already-established businesses ably serving the community. Bulldog Soap at 721 Shuswap Avenue, 250.682.2838, carries a line of “pamper me” products from bath bombs and salts to scrubs and, of course, soaps. Lotions are part of their inventory as well, along

with a popular shampoo bar—great for travel and overall sudsing in general. Join Jacquie and Tracy on December 9, at 1:00 pm for their Holiday Sip and Shop event which will include sale items. An interesting addition to the Chase retail scene is Pedal Bros. at 637 Shuswap Ave., a specialty shop stocking recumbent trikes, which offer comfort and low impact cycling to a wide variety of cyclists. During their off-season, October 31 to March 15, Pedal Bros. can be contacted at 250.819.4104 to book appointments. Continued on page 3...

New businesses filled up Chase’s Downtown Core

723 Shuswap is the location of Treasures, Furniture, Décor & More, the new shop in town offering all things decorators enjoy—furnishings, one-of-a-kind pieces, upholstery, decorating supplies and (for sure) more. In addition to custom in-house refinishing, sprucing up woodwork can be done in your residence. Visit the store or call 250.775.0407 to check out upcoming workshops on refinishing, sign stencilling and the latest tips on sprucing up for spring. Chasing Stitches Plus at 124 Chase Street (across from Canada Post), 250.679.2950, is definitely Sewing Central—whether it be for fabrics, notions, threads, yarns or craft supplies, it’s the place to go. Proprietor Arlene also offers a variety of instructional classes: sewing on Tuesday mornings, knitting and crocheting on Wednesday afternoons, and Friday is the quilting bee day. Stitchery is where it’s at. For those looking for good items at affordable prices, the Shuswap Pawn location at 642 Shuswap Ave 250.679.8008 has a wide inventory available, with new items arriving regularly. Organized displays in bright surroundings welcome browsers and customers alike. In addition to these recent undertakings, late 2017 saw the Inside Out Café open in one of Chase’s historic buildings, the U Thi Restaurant moved into the vintage Underwood Hotel, new owners took over the Village Lanes Fun Centre (bowling and more) and a new proprietor set up shop in the Split Enzz Hair Salon. If you venture a little further East through the downtown core, you will find Eye Candy, which opened up at

826 Shuswap Ave in late 2017. The shop has come into it’s own over the last year, pleasing many customers with a wide variety of clothing, and giftware. Sunflower Bicycle Repair, which is closed for the winter season, set up operations on the property of an historic residence at 838 Shuswap Avenue— the home of this newspaper as well. Sales and service to repair to keep that favourite bike rolling. On a less upbeat note, this year that’s fast drawing to a close also included the inferno that engulfed the town’s Royal Bank building and its ancillary spaces, residential and business, forcing the newly renovated Elite Studio, 250.668.0798, to relocate its aesthetics and nail services. And the bank reopened in Chase Plaza, near the Safety Mart food store. Hence, from the ashes …… Chase rises up. And to sweeten the pot—watch for the December 15th opening of Natty Cakes Confectionary & Bake Shop, 745 Shuswap Avenue at Chase Street. Delectable and delicious custom-made baked goods—that look almost too good to eat! As well, Natalie is hosting a Holiday Treat Workshop on December 16, 1-2 pm, $15. Create your own holiday bark, bark pops and festive pretzels. RSVP by December 12 at 778.257.9989 as space is limited. So all in all, 2018 was a pretty good year for the Village of Chase. Bring on 2019—The Chamber of Commerce Annual General Meeting is scheduled for January. Editor’s Note: If we have inadvertently missed anything, please advise at info@chasesunflower.ca. In January watch for an article featuring the amazing community projects that were completed over 2018 as well.

A PASTORAL PERSPECTIVE: Welcome to Advent by Tyler Harper

So the lights are going up around the village, wreaths are being hung, for better and I hear snow might be on its way, so let me welcome you to the season of advent. Welcome to Advent. Maybe you don’t hear that phrase very much; it’s not nearly as popular as its prominent relative, “Merry Christmas”. Advent often gets over shadowed by that big day on the December 25th, there aren’t any coffee chains that make seasonable cups that proclaim “welcome to advent” or “maybe you have a memorable advent”. It doesn’t really roll off the tongue, does it? Another reason why we likely don’t hear this phrase or think about this season is because many of us aren’t quite sure what advent is. For most of us, when we hear the word advent we think of waxy chocolates from our childhood behind a cardboard door, we think of 24 little chocolates, or maybe we think of the recent adult additions to this category (24 days of tea, or 24 days of coffee, or 24 days of nail polish, 24 days of wine, of craft beer, or of beef jerky). Advent isn’t about getting something, it is about waiting for something. For centuries the—dating back to at least 480 A.D.— the Christian church has marked the four weeks preceding Christmas as a time defined by waiting for something, or more specifically someone, to come. The word advent comes from a Latin word meaning coming. Advent is waiting for someone to come.

Contest: Ride the Holiday Train Village of Chase will be giving away two free tickets to ride the CP Holiday Train from Chase to Kamloops on Sunday, December 16, 2018. To enter the draw, please go to the Village's Facebook page and write 50 words or less about why you should be chosen with your friend/partner/child to ride the Holiday Train to Kamloops. The winners will be announced at Council's December 11, 2018 Council meeting. (You must be able to board the train at its stop in Chase just after the festivities end, and you will be required to plan your own transport back to Chase from Kamloops)

In Advent followers of Jesus remember the experience of those who were waiting for the Messiah— the one who would put the brokenness in our world back together. But advent is also a time when those who follow Jesus remind ourselves that we are still waiting for Him to come again, we are still waiting for the work to be completed, for God to finally fix our world, and our families, and ourselves, once and for all. Advent is remembering those who waited and remembering that we still wait. So maybe we don’t have advent parties or don’t hear advent carols on the radio because we don’t like to wait, well, maybe you like to wait, but I certainly don’t enjoy waiting. Whether it is waiting for the doctor, or waiting for a train, or waiting for our microwave popcorn, as people — we don’t like to wait. Maybe we avoid talking about advent because we want to avoid waiting? But we’re all waiting for something, waiting for a baby to be born, waiting for the weekend to arrive, waiting our health to improve, or waiting for the weather to change. The question is, what are you waiting for? What is it that find yourself looking forward to, this week, this month, this year? And is it really worth the wait? Every year advent ends in Christmas, when we celebrate the coming of Jesus. One day when He returns our advent, our waiting, will end. Tyler (tyler@chasechurch.com) is the Pastor at Chase Evangelical Free Church.

The finals will be on Sunday. The games are free to attend, but the

team will be hosting raffles, 50/50 draws, and selling various items to raise funds for future tournaments and away games. The concession will be open throughout the weekend to grab a bite to eat. Coach Steve wants to remind the community that the Broncos represent Chase when they travel to away games and it would be exciting for the young athletes to have some fans watching at their tournament. Coach Steve also mentioned that the goal of some of his players is to play for the Chase Heat in the future. Come check out some great local hockey!
