Obituary Richard (Dick) Hermann 22 Aug 1927 – 26 Nov 2023 Dick Hermann was a transplant to Chase in 2011. He immediately invested in his community, being on the board of the local museum, teaching kids to read at Haldane school, and writing the odd article for The Sunflower. He was an avid photographer and spent lots of time driving in the back country around Chase snapping photos. Many of his photos were shown on Global News. But his main love and focus was his family. Dick is survived by his wife of 72 years, Mary, his two children, four grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren. They all mourn his loss but also celebrate a life truly well lived.

The Campaign for Remembrance
Shuswap Better at Home
Submitted by Daniel McLean, Chase Legion, Poppy Committee
Branch 107 (Chase) of the Royal Canadian Legion extends its sincerest thanks to the communities of our service area for their generosity to, and support for the 2023 Remembrance Campaign. To date, donations to the Legion’s Poppy Fund have totaled more than $15,300.00, exceeding last year’s campaign by over $2,000.00. This is an amazing result, especially in light of the challenges experienced by our communities during the past summer’s wildfire season. We are humbled by the generosity demonstrated by our many donors. Branch 107 will soon begin to put these donations to work to help Veterans, their families, and the agencies which support them. We would further like to acknowledge the willingness of the many business owners and agencies which hosted Poppy Fund donation tables and donation boxes. Also worthy of note are the businesses and citizens who sponsored remembrance wreaths and candles. We would not have raised these donations without your support, for which we are
deeply grateful. Also successful was the Chase Remembrance Day parade and ceremony. These events were kindly supported by the Village of Chase, which provided the Community Hall and permitted remembrance markers to be placed at the graves of the Veterans interred in the Chase Cemetery. We also wish to thank Citizens on Patrol for providing traffic control services during the parade, the Chase Fire Department, the Chase Detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and of course, the volunteers who selflessly gave their time to organize and deliver the numerous activities involved in this year’s campaign. We could not have done it without you! Finally, and most importantly, Branch 107 wishes to offer its respect and thanks to the Veterans of our communities, both for their individual service and for their collective willingness to stand in defence of our rights and freedoms. Idling in a Gas or Diesel Fuelled Vehicles Did you know….
It saves gas–as an example, if we idle for 5 min warming up our vehicle, 3 minutes waiting in a line-up to get our coffee, and 4 minutes talking on our cell phone-we’ve burned enough gas to drive 10 kms. Or just think of filling up approximately 150 balloons with emissions every minute.

THANK YOU!
As you may know, we’ve completed our 2nd week back since the fire in June. The support since has been nothing short of outstanding. Every person who has ordered pizza has expressed their elation commenting “so happy you’re back” and our record numbers have reflected your support. From the bottom of my heart, thank you! Also, a massive thank you to my staff Nakia, Dave, Titus and Brendan. You are integral to our success and this isn’t possible without you. Also a huge thank you to Chris and Rob of MJK Renovations! By far my largest debt of gratitude goes to my amazing wife, Megs. There is a pizza named after her and for great reason. Not only has she had she had to deal with me being at home for five months but she was and still is the one emailing and calling the insurance adjusters and accountants multiple times daily while financially supporting our household in her dual position of C.O.O and Paralegal. Megan’s hard work and determination is the main reason Pete’s Pizza is back up and running. She also takes care of the little details that make our lives run smoothly such as Christmas shopping, scheduling appointments and planning birthday parties. She truly is the brains behind the operation and I could not do it without her. Her ability to multitask and accomplish everything she has is incredible and she is the person you should be thanking for your dinner. Megs, I am eternally grateful for everything. I love you.

Shuswap Watershed Council opens Water Quality Grant Program for applications submitted by Shuswap Watershed Council
The Shuswap Watershed Council (SWC) is inviting another round of applications to its Water Quality Grant Program, beginning December 1st. “One of our objectives as a watershed council is to protect and maintain water quality in Shuswap and Mara Lakes,” explains Erin Vieira, program manager for the SWC. “We’re looking to partner with and support Shuswap-area farms to introduce new nutrient management strategies that will protect water quality while improving soil health.” Vieira says the grant program has a particular focus on reducing nutrient inputs from the landscape to rivers and lakes. That’s because excessive amounts of nutrients, especially phosphorus, contribute to algal blooms which reduce the quality of water for drinking and recreation, and may become toxic to people, pets and livestock. The Salmon Arm Bay area of Shuswap Lake was impacted by large algal blooms
in the summer of 2020 and 2022. “Water quality monitoring and research has shown us that agricultural lands in the Salmon River valley and Shuswap River valley are the biggest contributors of nutrients to the lakes,” Vieira says. “Therefore, our grant program is geared toward helping farms undertake projects or implement new practices to improve nutrient management and soil health.” By doing so, nutrients such as phosphorus will be retained on the landscape and continually cycled in the soil, being used by crops and vegetation – not washing off into nearby creeks and rivers through rain, snowmelt, or erosion. It’s a win-win situation for farms and for water quality. Up to $55,000 is available in the current intake. Farmers, agri-businesses, hobby farmers, landowners, and stewardship groups within the Shuswap watershed are invited to apply. Applicants are required to contribute at least 50% of the total project cost in cash and/or in-kind contributions. Funding will be distributed to successful applicants in early 2024. c/o Fraser Basin Council 200A – 1383 McGill Road
Kamloops, BC V2C 6K7 250.314.9660 www.shuswapwater.ca Since 2020 the SWC has provided 13 grants to Shuswap-area farms and stewardship groups for projects that protect water quality such as riparian planting and restoration, riverbank stabilization, wetland development, livestock fencing, manure and effluent storage, cover cropping, field drainage improvement, irrigation efficiency, and no-till agriculture. Prospective applicants to the grant program can learn more from a short video the SWC produced in 2020, available on their YouTube channel (youtube.com/@shuswapwater). The SWC recently published an updated water quality report that summarizes a research project done in partnership with UBC Okanagan. The report reveals the sources of nutrients to Shuswap and Mara Lakes and illustrates that nutrient levels in Mara Lake are on the rise. See Shuswap Watershed Council releases updated report on nutrients and water quality and announces grant opening in December. More information about the grant program and an application package is available at www.shuswapwater.ca. The application period is open from December 1st 2023 – January 31st 2024.
