Ingredients
Recipe: Homemade Eggnog
• 6 large egg yolks
• 1/2 cup granulated sugar
• 1 cup heavy whipping cream
• 2 cups milk
• 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
• pinch of salt
• 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
• ground cinnamon , for topping
• Alcohol optional, see note
Instructions
Whisk the egg yolks and sugar together in a medium bowl until light and creamy.
In a saucepan over medium-high heat, combine the cream, milk, nutmeg and salt. Stir often until mixture reaches a bare simmer.
Add a big spoonful of the hot milk to the egg mixture, whisking vigorously. Repeat, adding a big spoonful at a time, to temper the eggs.
Once most of the hot milk has been added to the eggs, pour the mixture back into the saucepan on the stove.
Whisk constantly for just a few minutes, until the mixture is
just slightly thickened (or until it reaches about 160 degrees F on a thermometer). It will thicken more as it cools.
Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla, and alcohol*, if using.
Pour the eggnog through a fine mesh strainer into a pitcher or other container and cov er with plastic wrap. Refrigerate until chilled. It will thicken as it cools. If you want a thinner, completely smooth consistency, you can add the entire mix ture to a blender with 1 or 2 tablespoons of milk and blend until smooth.
Serve with a sprinkle of cinna mon or nutmeg, and fresh whipped cream, if desired.
Store homemade eggnog in the fridge for up to one week.
Notes
Alcohol: If you want to add alcohol to your eggnog, start with ¼ cup bran dy, bourbon, rum or whisky added at the same time as the vanilla, or af ter cooling the eggnog. Add more to taste, if desired.
Yield: about 4 cups

Battery fire prevention
submitted by Brian Lauzon, Fire Chief, Chase Fire Rescue
Battery fire damage stats
• 34 fires caused by rechargeable batteries from January 1, 2021, to August 22, 2022
• Over $12,200,000 in damage
• 7 fire related injuries and 5 fire deaths as a result
Rechargeable batteries, such as lithium ion (Li-ion), nickel cadmium (NiCd), nickelmetal hydride (NiMH), supply power to many kinds of devices including:
• Smart phones
• Laptops
• Scooters
• E-bikes
• E-cigarettes
• Smoke alarms
• Toys
• Cars Take care when using them. In some cases, they can cause a fire or explosion.
What you should know:
• Batteries store a large amount of energy in a very small space
• Sometimes the batteries are being used in ways they were not designed for, this can be dangerous
• As with any product, a small number of the batteries can be defective, overheat, catch fire, or explode
How to use batteries safely:
• Buy devices that are listed
by a qualified testing laboratory (for example, it has the UL mark for Underwriters Laboratory)
• Always follow manufacturer’s instructions
• Only use the charging cord that came with the device
• Never charge a device under your pillow, on your bed, or under your couch
• Keep batteries at room temperature, do not place in direct sunlight, or keep in hot vehicles
• Store batteries away from anything that can catch fire
• Never disassemble or alter batteries in an attempt to enhance their performance
What to do if you see a problem with your battery:
1. STOP using the battery immediately if you notice:
• An odor
• A change in colour
• Overheating
• Change in shape
• Leaking
• Odd noises
2. If it is safe to do so, move the device away from anything that can catch fire.
Do not put batteries in the garbage.
Find a recycling depot near you.

Crisp cold air can do wonders for just about anyone, especially if a clear mind or two, three or 25 is needed. A frozen pond is somewhere out there in the vicinity, beckoning to host a bunch of fun loving shinny stars.
This past weekend the Chase Heat earned a point in the Division standings. Coming off a lengthy stretch of illness that ran rampant through the roster, the climb up the hill to more success is on route.
Friday the 25th found the locals hosting the Castlegar Rebels at the Art Holding Memorial Arena. In the 1st two wily old veterans sparked their team to an early lead. Aidan Brown tallied his 8th of the campaign from new guy Carter Price and Owen Dean. Shortly afterwards Captain Trevor Kennedy made it 2-0 with assistance from Cale Nahorney and Brown. In the 2nd period it was a reversal as the Rebels came back with a pair to notch the game at 2-2. In the 3rd Ryan Keylor from Braeden Huth regained the lead, but the foes scored
to send things to overtime. Meyer Gaume got his first start in eons between the posts and provided his team with timely puck repelling. Diddly-squat happened in OT and the scene was set for a nerve wracking shootout. Suffice to write the visitors won and the Heat garnered a single digit in the standings for the regulation tie.
The following day the Heat rode a 52 passenger road rocket to the southern mecca of Summerland, home of the Steam. In the 1st the hosts went up by two, until Braeden Huth scored his 6th of the season aided by another new fella Riley Zdan. That was it for the Heat as the long ride home came on the heels of a 5-1 loss.
Next up the Heat travel to 100 Mile House on Wednesday the 30th. Kamloops is the destination on December 3rd and the next round in the battle of the Shuswap happens in Sicamous on Saturday the 4th. Close enough to travel to, local fans get a break to get ready for Christmas while the boys are on the road.
Getting back to pond hockey, perhaps it may be simple, crude or unsophisticated to suggest they go back to a rudimentary way of playing the game. The first step is to pack up some supplies, firewood, hot dogs, buns, marshmallows and hot chocolate. Frozen toes, lots of laughs and clear heads may be just what the doctor ordered. That just may be something for us all to mull over doing?
