HALDANE STUDENTS NEED YOUR HELP Would you like to make a difference in the life of a child? Would you like to help put a child on the road to success? If you can spare just 60 minutes one day a week you can help two children improve their reading skill. The Haldane One to One program is scheduled to begin on February 5th and end April 18th. It runs Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings between 9:00 and noon. Fifteen struggling readers each spend
30 minutes with a tutor. The students receive the extra reading practice and encouragement they need to become better readers. In order for the program to reach all the children needing this support additional tutors are required. It isn’t a hard job; in fact, it is rewarding and a lot of fun. If you can spare the time please call One to One Reading Coordinator, Denise Harper, at 250-577-3528 or leave a message at Haldane Elementary.

Chase Heat team Captain Cam Watson comes from a hockey family—and is really happy about that. Parents Helle and Keith Watson play the game and Keith still coaches Cam’s sister’s team. It’s obvious siblings Schannie and Cam got the “hockey genes.” “I started skating at about age three,” he says, “and went into hockey a couple of years later.” So go-for-it defenceman Cam has been on skates for more than 15 years. And very few pucks get by this point man, who is one of the team’s top two goal scorers as well. “Family support is so important,” he states emphatically. “It’s huge. My parents and both sets of grandparents, Erik and Bente Jorgensen, and Harry and Flora Watson, attend every game they can.” And of course, this dedication follows years of lots of driving, early practices, game days, and steady encouragement. It’s true that it takes family effort to produce a top-notch athlete. “Being chosen to play with the Chase Heat was exciting,” Watson says with a big smile. “It was a goal of mine. But it sort of happened by accident. A bunch of my buddies were going to a Heat camp when we were about 15, one summer. And the day before they said to me ‘You gotta come.’ So I called up Coach Fox, met with him, and he told me I could fill an extra spot. The Prospects Camp was a stayover camp, two nights in the arena mezzanine, sort of camped out, meals provided, with my friends. It was fun and hard work. From that, I was invited to the team’s main camp and they chose me as an Affiliated Player.” “I played three games with the team that year and followed them everywhere
through the playoffs. Even travelled on the bus with them. The year after I was selected to play for the team, 2016-17, which was a great season. Last year was good too.” “We lost a lot of players who aged out at the end of last year, and there were some changes made as coaching staff got into restructuring the team.” “It’s a rebuilding year now and we’ve definitely come a long way since the beginning of the season.” Part of that rebuilding has been appointing Cam as Captain, along with Assistant Captains Brett Alexander, Tyler Collens and Evan Hughes. “Being Captain,” says Cam, “means being the go-to guy for everything. It’s important to amp the team up and set an example, on and off the ice. The Captain and AC’s are the ones the rookies and returning players look to for leadership and encouragement. Our attitude has to be positive whether it’s on ice or in the dressing room. They look to us to be ready to go, to never give up and they follow that lead. We have a young team this year, with quite a number of players in school.” “The rebuilding involves finding the right guys for the right roles. We’re not all needed to be goal scorers, but the mix of skills is what’s important. They’re all key to playing well as a team.” And Evan Hughes and Cam have been teammates for a long time—besides being cousins through marriage. “Yeah,” says Cam, “we’re both from Salmon Arm and have played on the same team nearly every year since the very beginning. It’s been great.” Continued on page 7...
Page 7 • February 1st, 2019 • Chase Sunflower Continued from previous page... When asked how he balanced finishing high school and team commitments, Watson says, “To the team, school comes first. You never miss school unless a Friday road trip comes up. Practices are scheduled around the school kids, either in the morning or after class.” “That is until playoff time. Then things get complicated. When I was in Grade 12, I transferred my schooling to Salmon Arm. And would head there once a week, get in class, grab all my work, and do it on my own. And that year we were in playoffs for so long, through to the end of March. I missed a bunch of school. Took a lot of effort to catch up but I managed. It requires hard work and being organized to play hockey and complete your high school education.” Cam reports that having a social life means working around hockey schedules too. But at the same time, it’s a known fact that their busy lifestyle will change when players age out of their league. Asked about the fun of being part of the Chase Heat and he couldn’t choose just one thing. “Everything!” Watson says with a grin. We get to play hockey everyday, nothing better than that. You make friends— teammates become family. We have great fan support, the coaching is amazing, and all personnel connected to the team give their all to it. And Chase is a friendly place to live
on top of all that.” As far as challenges, Captain Cam feels that the players who are here far from home have it tougher. “I can go home every Sunday, but teammates farther from home can’t do that. Must be hard for them sometimes.” An important part of players’ handling being away from family and home are the local folks who have players billeted with them. “Tyler, Evan and I are with Kary and Jeff Pittendreigh, and they’re just awesome!” Cam reports. His advice for up and coming players is to look at all aspects of a prospective team and its operation. “The Heat is one of the best managed teams in the league,” he states. “Our pre- and post-game meals are great, the dressing room too, we all support each other, and everyone around us pours everything into the team.” With just one more year to come with the Chase Heat, he has future plan in place. “I’m going to study aircraft maintenance engineering probably at Dawson Creek Northern Lights College.” Given that his family owns a helicopter business, that’s undoubtedly a good fit. Watson exemplifies all the positive aspects of athletics and team play. He’s a definite asset to any squad he’s part of, whether that be today or in the future. Cam aims, he shoots and he scores!

WHY DO WE HAVE A MUSEUM? submitted by Dick Hermann, Chase Museum
Some things don’t change much in 100 years. As witness to that statement, look at the two attached photos of the shop at the corner of Shuswap Avenue and Chase Street. The one identified as a men’s clothing store (from the Museum records) was taken in 1914, while the other was taken in 2019. The building itself remains basically unchanged except for minor modifications to the facade, and after 100plus years it continues to fulfill its function of providing space for business activity in Chase. Other things do change a lot over a period of 100 years—witness the 1927 photo of the baby in the chair, complaining bitterly about being put out in the cold to have his picture taken, and the 2018 photo of one of that baby’s six greatgrandchildren enjoying Christmas in Chase. Some changes occur so quickly that one must wonder where the time goes. But that is why we have a Museum— to recognize and record the events that go on around us. The purpose of the Chase Museum, (officially known as the Chase and District Museum and Archives Society) as defined in its Constitution, includes the words “to collect and preserve information, records and objects of scientific, educational, historical and cultural value” and “make such information available to the public”. There are other reasons why we have a Museum in Chase. In 1984 a group
of individuals, including Roger Behn, John Boulding, and Dave Fleming, had the wisdom and foresight to apply to the Registrar of Companies in B.C. for incorporation of the Chase and District Museum and Archives Society. The effective date of the registration was April 23, 1985. The initiative of that group is perhaps the prime reasons why we have our Museum in Chase. Since that time a large number of individuals, businesses and government bodies have contributed time, effort, funds, wisdom, and encouragement, to bring the Museum to where it is today. The on-going existence of the Chase Museum depends to a considerable extent upon the level of support provided by the c o m m u n i t y. T h e membership in the Museum, at $10 annually for an individual and $15 for a family, makes a significant contribution to the funding for operations, and also provides a demonstration of the level of support from within the community, which is important when the Museum applies for grants from various government sources. Changes have recently been made that will simplify the process of renewing membership in the Museum of in obtaining a new Membership. Everyone is urged to bring your Membership up to date, and/or become a new Member.

BUSINESS WRANGLERS HIT byHEAT WITH TWO LOSSES Scott Koch, Chase Heat The HEAT with some key injuries throughout the lineup faced the 100 Mile House WRANGLERS in a home and home series this past weekend. On Friday the 25th Chase rode the bus to the south Cariboo. 100 Mile popped a pair in the 1st, a trio in the 2nd, and one in the 3rd. The HEAT got a single early in the 3rd from Breckin Erichuk on the powerplay assisted by Gavin Mattey and Evan Vinterlik. The final on the scoreboard 6-1 WRANGLERS. Saturday Night in Chase there was optimism in the arena. Early in the
1st Hayden Wiebe scored assisted by Erichuk and Evan Hughes. But the goal scoring for the locals dried up after that optimistic occurrence. 100 Mile went on to score 7 counters to take a 7-1 win home to the Cariboo. So two injury riddled games that were important to win to keep HEAT playoff hopes alive. Two games with 13 goals against and 2 goals for in a stretch drive to squeeze into the post season. The faithful fans in attendance were left scratching their heads wondering if there is any hope or chance for a post

Hello again everyone! It has been a crazier than normal Winter for us here at Village Lanes! So I’m SO sorry that we haven’t had anything for you to read lately! There have been some notable things happen in the last little while! This weekend is the Annual B Intercity Championships being held at Lincoln Lanes in Vernon! Chase has some excellent representation heading to the event, and we urge you that if you just so happen to be in Vernon on Saturday to swing by and cheer on the Chase team! A big good luck to Kelly Collins, Rae Semple, Karl Berglund, John Mosimann, Elmer Dodds, Lyle Coates, and coach Matthew Griffin
who are bowling in the men’s event. And to Sam Steil, Sharron Mindel, Lana German, Shayla Coates, Brandi Nakazawa and coach Kaitlyn Deleeuw who will be competing on the women’s side. Speaking of Lyle Coates, it’s definitely worth a mention that Lyle threw his first 400 game of his life a couple of weeks back! During practice, so unfortunately no big awards, but very impressive nonetheless! Way to go! We are gearing up for our Annual February Bowl-A-Spiel, which will bring over 120 bowlers to the Village of Chase! If you see the parking lot full, stop by and check out some of the
