Kids and Screens

by Carolyn Parks Mintz, Author, Journalist, Freelance Writer It has been said that two of life’s toughest challenges are left to amateurs: parenthood and citizenship. And just to further complicate raising children, electronic gadgets complete with screens have become part of our everyday living, while research is unable to keep up with the growth of a booming tech industry. As with most game-changers (pardon the accidental pun here), there is an upside and a downside to the usage— sometimes bordering on obsession—that has developed around screens. The advantages of tablets, smartphones and even gaming consoles are obvious, while the detrimental aspects of such conveniences are less apparent and have been the topic of varying opinions in recent years. However, current analyses indicate causative issues. A recent study which tracked Calgary mothers and their children since 2008 and involved over 2,400 children aged two to five, indicates a clear link between screen time and developmental delay in the young. Its lead author is Dr. Sheri Madigan, an Assistant Professor in the Psychology Department at the University of Calgary, and the mother of four. Her research entitled “Association between Screen Time and Children’s Performance on a Developmental Screening Test,” reported that “toddlers and preschoolers who spent high amounts of time in front of televisions, computers and other digital devices were less likely to reach various milestones for communication skills, motor skills and problem-solving by age five.” The study revealed children were in front of a television or on a digital device for an average of 2.4 hours a day at age two, 3.6 hours at age three, and 1.6 hours at age five (when they had likely started

school). It also found deficits and delays in developmental outcomes, such as, language and/or socio-emotional health. The Canadian Paediatric Society and recommends no screen time for infants and toddlers under 18 months, and no more than one hour of screen time each day for preschoolers of all ages. Academy of Pediatrics concurs with this recommendation and goes on to urge parents to select high quality programmes, watch videos with their child, talk with the child while watching, and connect what’s seen to their everyday experiences. What is watched and how they watch is even more important than how much. Dr. Madigan, who holds the Canada Research Chair in the determinants of child development, stated “Excessive screen time is likely a key contributor to recent research findings that show one-quarter of Canadian children are ill-prepared for learning when they begin school.” Quoted in HealthEssentials— Cleveland Clinic, USA pediatrician Dr. Skyler Kalady supports the findings of Dr. Madigan’s Calgary study, explaining that a developing mind is in a critical phase during the very early years. And she advises that parents should not doubt that they are more capable than a device to teach their children. “The early years are critical for children to spend quality face-to-face time with parents and caregivers,” Dr. Kalady points out. “Time together enables children to learn how to interact both verbally and non-verbally.” “Playing with a child, exploring, playing with toys like blocks and puzzles, toys without electronic parts or even quietly reading them a book,” Dr. Kalady states, “allows children to explore, be curious and learn.” Continued on next page....

A WELL EARNED WIN by Scott Koch, Chase Heat

So this past weekend the lone game for the wounded and beat up HEAT was a home encounter versus the Mountain Mecca Mad Bears. Friday night lights were burning at the Chaos Castle and 285 loyal fans traipsed through the turnstile to plunk their butts into the hard plastic seats at the Art Holding Memorial Arena. The tasty mochas and succulent poutine at the Chilli Areena Cantina drew them out of their warm homes and into the sub zero climate, with the game a probable afterthought. But, on this night the proverbial hockey gods had something wonderful in store for those hardy souls. The Division leading powerhouse R e v e l s t o k e GRIZZLIES were facing off versus the local home town heros. The Stoke crew possibly the very best squad in the KIJHL versus a young crew from Chase that sits well back in the standings. Chase showed great compete and a willingness for hard work right off the opening faceoff. Half way through the opening period Evan Vinterlik from Cam Watson and Breckin Erichuk got the fan’s

excited. Five minutes later Mr. Vinterlik popped another from Gavin Mattey. Vinterlik was fine wine from the vine as he tickled the twine with his talented twisted twig tricks. After 20 minutes the HEAT up 2-0. In the 2nd the visitors got to within one, however Tyson Lampreau regained the two goal differential from Vinterlik and Ty Collens. Prior to forty minutes concluding the visitors got another and the score was 3-2. Nail biting time in the 3rd, relieved half way through when Erichuk dipped, dodged and doodled to undress the Revelstokian tender. The helpers went to Evan Hughes and Cody Allen. With 3:59 left in regulation the visitor’s top marksman placed the puck in the Chase net. With the goalie from the Stoke pulled, frantic 6 on 5 action in the final minute solved absolutely nothing and the HEAT hard worked their way to a 4-3 victory. Bright lights of the night, Vinterlik with his magic could have scored 6 times, Erichuk with his playmaking and puck control was denied more than a couple of counters and Geoff Drought in net was

drop dead stellar in his puck denial of 39 of 42 attempts. Evan Hughes and Cam Watson were beasts of burden as they set early and often the example of hard work and tenacity. The supporting cast never quit and the positive result was well deserved. Next home game is Saturday the 16th versus the howling COYOTES from Osoyoos. The regular season concludes the

following Saturday the 23rd with a clash with the North Okanagan KNIGHTS. The Annual Awards Banquet happens at 5;00 pm on the 24th at the ALIB Conference Centre. For $20 you can enjoy an evening of tall tales, a team video, scrumptious pasta and chicken dinner as well as games of chance. So take a chance and come out for a fun evening. 778-220-6955 for tickets.
