HEAT AWARDS BANQUET 2017-18
S
by Scott Koch, Chase Heat
unday Night the 11th of February, the Chase HEAT Annual Awards Banquet was held at the Adams Lake Indian Band Conference Centre. The evening commenced with a succulent chicken and pasta dinner complete with delicious desserts from the kitchen of Colleen Patterson. The Players were introduced in their fire red jerseys to the applause of 180 in attendance. After dinner, Guest Speaker Dave Chyzowski from the Kamloops Blazers, provided stories from his hockey history as well as providing a message regarding the day to day commitment it requires to excel at the junior level. The lessons learned and the commitment it takes to be successful carry over into success in life later on… when the best times are over. The first award of the event the Rhonda Kenoras Volunteer of the Year was awarded to Jane Herman. Her “Never Quit” attitude to life sets the example for

all the Heater Volunteers to follow, and she is always up for a challenge, including some less than desirable tasks and duties. Director of Player Development/Head Coach Brad Fox noted that all the players deserved awards for their dedication to the team and its goals. (List of awards on page 5) The 20 year old Graduating Players, Zachary Fournier, Kolten Moore, Pat Brady, Grady Musgrave and Darion Nordick were then presented with a special HEAT tote bag with name number and team logo on it, a logo’d golf shirt, a framed and logo’d action photo and their game worn red jersey. The evening wrapped up with an excellent video provided by the season long photography of Andrea Stelter. The Captains, Musgrave, Moore, Fournier and Brady gave a heartfelt thank you to one and all, for making the Chase HEAT and the Community a first class experience.

WHY CHASE? submitted by Wilf Bennett
My Dad and Mom stayed and worked up at Chase Creek for a rancher named Jack Hepburn in the 50’s then. Later moved to Kamloops and work at different ranches then when mom passed on. Dad came back to chase and got a job at Matty Ranch in the Lo Bear Creek Valley. This was 1974 and I followed him to the town of Chase. I loved the beautiful scenery of the lakes, mountains, the back roads and a different lifestyle in a little town that was real busy back then. Oh yeah, Fridays and Saturdays was always something going on. There was always work, sawmills, forestry, and logging and a variety of stores, cafes, and shopping. I met a lot of folks around Chase and I still pick up my mail in the same post box since 1974. Chase was a real bustling town back then. Wilf Bennett

WHO ARE CHASE CITIZENS ON PATROL? SUBMITTED BY CHASE CITIZENS ON PATROL
Citizens on Patrol is a volunteer organization which operates in a large number of communities throughout Canada. In all cases, Citizens on Patrol operates under the direct supervision of the local police. Our organization welcomes members over the age of 19 who have successfully passed a current criminal record check. Members are required to attend training presented by local police officers and to participate actively and regularly in at least one aspect of COP duties. In Chase, Citizens on Patrol has been actively involved in the community for more than 20 years. The group was formed in response to a need for more “eyes
and ears” on the ground throughout the community. In this capacity, we provide a number of valuable services to the citizens of Chase and area. Trained members working in pairs conduct vehicle patrols throughout the Village of Chase and VLA Road from May through the end of October. The patrols are conducted at random hours but particularly during peak hours for criminal behaviours. The majority of the patrols take place after 10:00 p.m. and continue well into the morning hours. During each patrol, every street and alley in the village is covered repeatedly on a totally random pattern. Careful notes are taken of all activities observed during the patrols and these logs

are then submitted to the RCMP. Incidents requiring police or other emergency personnel are reported immediately thus ensuring prompt response. In addition, Chase Citizens on Patrol provide traffic control for events such as parades. We also monitor crowds at local events such as Music in the Park, CornStock, Canada Day and Chase Country Christmas. At various times throughout the year, groups ask us to monitor parking lots and/or private events taking place in the community. Our presence ensures that the local RCMP members are kept apprised of potential problems and prevents issues from developing. Chase Citizens on Patrol also works with ICBC to provide Road Safety education and to conduct regular Speed Watch and Cell Watch events at key locations throughout the Village. When invited to do so, we also conduct these events at various rural locations in the surrounding area. Last year, COP worked closely with local RCMP and ICBC to conduct a bicycle safety event for local elementary school children. When we have enough members, we also conduct foot patrols focusing on Crime Prevention. When conducting any of our services in the community, our vehicles and members are clearly identifiable. Any legitimate on duty COP member will be wearing either a bright yellow t-shirt with a Chase COP logo or a bright yellow jacket emblazoned with the RCMP crest and the name Chase COP. All members carry photo ID signed by a local RCMP Commanding Officer. Our vehicles are marked on both the driver and passenger sides. Over the years, our members have been instrumental in preventing crimes, facilitating arrests and providing testimony resulting in convictions. We wish we could do much more for the community. To do so, we need many, many more members, especially younger ones. If you are concerned about maintaining the peace and safety of our community, please join us and become a trained and authorized part of the solution. We meet on the second Tuesday of every month at 7:00 pm at Creekside Seniors Centre. We’ll see you there and welcome you with open arms!

Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of
William “Ness” Valentine Joseph Trouton
Ness passed away peacefully on January 29, 2018, with his loving family by his side. Memories of Ness will forever be cherished by his family. He is remembered by his son Bill, daughter-inlaw Sharen of Chase, B.C. and his granddaughters; Jaimi (Brendan), and Jenna (Brett) of Kelowna, B.C. Ness was predeceased by Merle, his loving wife, best friend and partner for 67 years. Ness was Born on Valentine’s Day, 1922, in Cedarkine (now Milner Ridge), Manitoba. It was here where he grew up and was raised by Grampy and Grannie Trouton. In 1942 moved the family to New Westminster, B.C. where Ness started his own logging business and worked throughout the province. While in the lower mainland, Ness would eventually go to work for his father’s gravel company in Surrey, working hard to help build the business. In 1946 Ness met the love of his life, Merle, and in 1948 they were married. Together they shared many wonderful experiences of baseball, playing cards, and barn dances. In 1964, Ness bought his father’s gravel company. With his dedication, Ness & Son’s Construction grew to be very successful, so in 1969 Ness sold it to buy the BCNU motel in Sicamous. In the Shuswap, Ness found a love for boating and bowling and, in 1973, he retired and moved to Salmon Arm at the young of age of 51. Ness loved his family and in 2000 he and Merle moved to Chase to be closer to them. Here he spent his time watching Jaimi and Jenna grow up. Ness helped them through 4H, watched them perform ballet and took them fishing and camping, whenever they could fit it in. Anyone that knew Ness also knew what a kind and loving man he was, he always told the best stories, and never had a bad word to say about anyone. He had a ten gallon heart, and he gave all of its capacity to the people he loved. He had a nick-name for everyone, but to play it safe he would call everyone by “m’girl” or “m’boy”, it didn’t matter the age. Always a gentleman, and ever the romantic, we can find comfort knowing that Ness is smiling ear to ear right now - together again with his Merle, dancing amongst the stars. Ness’ family would like to send a heartfelt thank you to Interior Health Services, and to the Health-care professionals that were so good to Ness over the past few years. We would also like to thank our friends and family for their support. If friends so desire, a donation in lieu of flowers, may be made in his memory to the Chase and District Health Unit.

Instant Pot Hawaiian Pineapple Pork Ingredients 1 can (20 oz) Pineapple chunks in pineapple juice 2 tablespoons water 1 tablespoon cornstarch 3 tablespoons honey 2 tablespoons soy sauce 2 tablespoons brown sugar 1 tablespoon grated ginger 3 garlic cloves, minced 2 tablespoons olive oil, separated 1 onion, chopped 1 red pepper, chopped 2 lb boneless pork stew meat Kosher salt and black pepper 1 teaspoon oregano Parsley for garnishing Instructions Drain the pineapple chunks and reserve the juice. Mix water, cornstarch, reserved pineapple juice, honey, soy sauce, brown sugar, ginger and garlic in a small bowl until well combined. Turn the Instant Pot ON and select
“saute” mode, adjust heat to more. When hot, add 1 tablespoon of oil. Add onion and red peppers and saute for 3 minutes, stirring constantly, until they are vibrant in color and just tender. Remove from Instant Pot and reserve. Add the remaining tablespoon of oil to the Instant Pot. When hot, add pork meat and saute until no longer pink. Add pineapple chunks and oregano. Season with salt and black pepper to taste; mix to combine. Add the sauce. Secure the lid to the instant pot and cook for 10 minutes. When the time is over, let the pressure release on its own for 5 minutes. Then, carefully turn the valve to “Venting,” to release any extra pressure that might still be in there. Then remove the lid. Add the reserved onions and red peppers to pot and toss to coat. Taste and adjust seasoning adding more salt and black pepper, if necessary. Garnish with fresh chopped parsley, if desired. Serve immediately over rice or steamed vegetables.
