Snowmobilers Rescued From Mountain Information from Chase RCMP

On Sunday February 12th, at about 7:00 pm, Chase RCMP received a report of two Abbotsford men, father and son, aged 51 and 21 years, stranded in a ravine while snowmobiling on Crowfoot Mountain. The men had called the Crowfoot Snowmobile Club and stated they had gone into a ravine and needed assistance to get out. The men stated they were experienced in the outdoors and were prepared to spend the night on the mountain. By 11:00 pm, the men called again to say that while they were fine, they would prefer to get rescued that night. Volunteers from

the snowmobile club ventured onto the mountain in the dark, and got within 500 metres of the men, but were unable to reach them due to darkness and terrain. On Monday morning, Chase RCMP and Shuswap Search and Rescue from Salmon Arm began the search using an RCMP helicopter and a second equipped with winch and basket. The men’s location was known by GPS coordinates, and the snowmobile club volunteers were able to reach the men and assist them in getting down the mountain. There were no injuries, and Search and Rescue was stood-down.

--------Bob Adshead was the managing partner of the new radio station CKEG, set to hit the airwaves in Nanaimo sometime in 1981.Their studio was next to the office of Pacific Truss where I was working and we became friends over the next few months and shared the odd beer together.

Bob related a story to me that actually happened to him in the summer of 1980 when he was working for the local radio station in Vernon B.C. as a broadcaster.

One of Bobs duties was to host a “roving mike” show and he would quite often head up to the lookout at Kalamalka Lake near Vernon and interview tourists. He had been on site for a few minutes and managed to convince a traveler who had just disembarked from a tour bus to talk on radio and share his travel experiences with Bob’s listeners. Of course some of the standard questions were, where are

It turns out this elderly gentleman was on his way from England to Australia. He was planning a surprise visit to his sister, whom he had not seen in over 10 years.

It just so happened he had a few days lay over in Vancouver and had jumped on a tour bus to see some of the Okanagan before carrying on to Australia.

Halfway through the interview the gentleman developed a strange look on his face and began to stare at another bus load of tourists disembarking a few feet away. Bob all of a sudden was aware he had lost his interview and then heard the man say...I don’t believe it… but I think that’s my sister getting off the other bus... and it was.

She was on her way from Australia to England to surprise her brother at the same time he was on his way from England to Australia to surprise her and she also had a lay over in Vancouver. She too had decided to see the Okanagan by way of tour bus and by some unbelievable circumstance both her bus and that of her brothers... stopped at the same spot at the same time on the same day. Each was traveling to another part of the world in opposite directions and neither was aware of the others intentions.... but somehow they met halfway through their journeys.

Bob had the interview of a lifetime...... what are the odds ?

Easy Butter Chicken Ingredients 1 cup butter, divided 1 onion, minced 1 tablespoon minced garlic 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce 3 cups heavy cream 2 teaspoons salt 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1 teaspoon garam masala 1 1/2 pounds boneless chicken breast, cut into bite-sized chunks 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 2 tablespoons tandoori masala Directions Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).

Melt a few tablespoons of butter in a skillet over medium heat. Stir in onion and garlic, and cook slowly until the onion caramelizes to a dark brown, about 15 minutes.

Meanwhile melt the remaining butter in a saucepan over medium-high heat along with the tomato sauce, heavy

cream, salt, cayenne pepper, and garam masala. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to medium-low; cover, and simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Then stir in caramelized onions.

While the sauce is simmering, toss cubed chicken breast with vegetable oil until coated, then season with tandoori masala and spread out onto a baking sheet.

Bake chicken in preheated oven until no longer pink in the center, about 12 minutes. Once done, add the chicken to the sauce and simmer for 5 minutes before serving.

Council Highlights Meeting of Mayor and Council: February 14, 2017 submitted by Joni Heinrich, Village of Chase CAO

Council adopted minutes from January 23, 2017, January 24, 2017 and the January 30, 2017 Budget meeting. Mayor Berrigan made a comment that it was very nice to see so many members of the public attending the budget meetings.

The regular meeting was then recessed into a Public Hearing.

The public hearing was being held in relation to a zoning amendment application at 315 Lakeshore Drive. The applicant wishes to construct a secondary suite above an existing garage and has applied for a zoning amendment to allow for this secondary suite on that property.

A written letter in opposition to the amendment had been received by Council prior to the meeting, and several signatures of neighbouring property owners were submitted during the hearing in support of the rezoning application.

After hearing from members of the gallery wishing to speak on the matter of the rezoning, the public hearing was adjourned and the Regular meeting of council was reconvened.

Council adopted the 2017 Revenue Anticipation Borrowing Bylaw which allows the municipality to borrow funds to operate prior to collecting tax revenues if borrowing is necessary. Typically borrowing to operate is not necessary, having the bylaw in place is simply a safeguard.

Council also adopted a zoning amendment bylaw pertaining to 141 Shuswap Avenue which legalizes the existing house on the property.

Council then considered the zoning amendment that was the subject of the public hearing earlier in the meeting.

Council gave the bylaw third reading and adopted the zoning amendment bylaw.

Council discussed the letter of support from the Chief of the Little Shuswap Lake Indian Band for the ‘Rocky Road Trail’, a historic road on Scatchard Mountain that if approved by the Provincial Government, could be built into a modern hiking trail to connect with existing trails on Scatchard Mountain.

Council asked Administration to provide more detailed information regarding the

process required for this initiative.

Terra Lundy who teaches Kangoo exercise classes at the Community Hall requested a reduction in rental fees for the use of the hall for her classes as she is providing a health benefit to some members of the community. Council passed a resolution to permit the Kangoo rental rates to fall under the Village’s ‘notfor-profit’ rate schedule.

Council considered a policy that controls the use of the Fire Department’s command vehicle recently transferred from the Public Works department to the Fire Department. The policy was adopted allowing the fire member in command to drive the vehicle to and from work, but the vehicle cannot be utilized for any personal use and will not be permitted to leave the community as it is strictly available as a command vehicle.

Council passed a resolution for Administration to obtain quotes from the current service provider for banking services for the Village and from the other local banking institution.

Legion’s Telethon Raises Funds

A Big Thank You to Chase Heat, Home Hardware, H&R Block, Sunshore Golf Course for their generous donations to the auction.

2016 Successful Year for Chase Fire Rescue

In 2016 Chase Fire Rescue responded to 32 fire calls resulting in 350 hours of service, and road rescue responded to 21 calls with 93.5 hours of service. These calls were all responded to by volunteer members who took time away from their families to attend. On top of these call outs the members also attend once weekly practices for fire, with the odd weekend training every few months, as well as at least two rescue practices a month. Members also volunteer their time to plan and organize fundraisers which help fund training and tools as well as provide the funding needed to donate back to the community. All members also donate their time throughout the year to help with community events including spaghetti dinners, pancake breakfasts, or simply helping a local resident in need.

Some of the big fundraising events of 2016 were Zumba classes conducted by Safety Officer, Maria Beaurain, the annual Lobsterfest, and of course the firefighter car washes, among others.

The generous support from the Chase community allowed the department to donate to many different organizations and projects throughout the year, including $300 to the Youth Action Committee, $300 to the Lions Splash Park. $45 to the Poppy fund, $600 to the Chase Excellence Program, and $200 to the Volunteer Fire Fighters Fund, among others. The department was also able to donate money to support a number of locals in times of need.

Earlier in 2016 a number of donations were made to the department in the name of former firefighter Austin Schmidt. The members of Chase Fire Rescue decided to use these funds to purchase a defibrillator for the Rescue truck, so that Firefighter Schmidt can continue to save lives for

years to come. The members would like to once again the many people who donated on his behalf.

The department is continuously grateful for the ongoing support they receive from the community. Companies like Adrenaline Auto continues to help aid rescue training by supplying vehicles for practice, and organizations like the Chase Legion who purchased voice amplifiers for the department, or the Chase Lions who helped bring together funding for IAmResponding C ommunication equipment.

The members are always grateful for the ongoing support received at every one of their fundraisers, and even for the gestures of kindness, such as Chase Heat inviting the entire department out to take in a home game.

In 2016, the department made a greater effort to keep in touch with the community, by creating a Facebook page, Twitter account, and Instagram feed. They also put together a website for news, safety tips, and a way to keep the community informed about upcoming events among other things.

In March they will be hosting the first of what they hope to be an annual event, inviting all emergency responders from outside areas, including fire departments, RCMP, BCAS, SAR, along with others, to participate in a bowling tournament in Chase. It is hoped that this even will

help allow the various departments to see each other in a non-emergency setting, allowing them the chance to build friendships with the comrades they work beside.

The Lobsterfest will also be back in June this year. Due to its ever-increasing popularity, it will be moved to the Adam’s Lake Gym and will also feature a dance and DJ to follow. Tickets are on sale now, a limited quantity will be sold and once they’re gone, they’re gone. A silent auction will once again be featured.

The department would like to thank the community for their support in 2016, and hopes to continue to earn it throughout the 2017 year. They would also like to thank their members for their countless hours of hard work and dedication, as well as their families who give up many family weekends, holidays and date nights. The department would also like to thank the mayor and council, who have taken major steps within the last year to help resolve past issues, and has shown great support and interest in helping the department deliver the best possible service to the community.

Icebreakers advance to Playoffs

by Cavelle Layes The Chase Icebreakers advance to the next round of playoffs after a weekend battle against Clearwater.

The Chase Atom hockey team had an easy win Saturday, with a final score of 7-3 on home ice.

However, Clearwater made it clear they were not going down without a fight when they showed up on the ice on Sunday.

While Chase came out strong, Clearwater fought back, keeping the team on their toes the entire game and eventually scoring the winning goal, leaving Chase losing with a 2-1 score, forcing them into a third game.

The competition was tough in the second Sunday game, with both teams battling to

keep their season going. Chase broke out with three goals in the first few minutes of game play, only to lose the lead before the period ended.

The Icebreakers were put to the test in the second, fighting for control of the puck which allowed them to tie the game before pulling ahead by one.

The third period seen both teams playing hard until the last minute, the Icebreakers however, were able to keep the score at a standstill, winning 5-4.

The Icebreakers will be heading to Logan Lake to play game one against the Blazers on Saturday, before hitting home ice Sunday afternoon at 12 pm.

Obituary

Duane Elvin Soderquist

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Duane Elvin Soderquist, who left us on February 8, 2017 at the age of 75.

Duane will be greatly missed by his wife Chris, his children Douglas, Randal (Deanna), and Lisa (Jim), stepchildren Rob, Randy (Shirley), and Tina (Brian), grandchildren Zachary, Nicole, Matthew, Morgan, Monica, Tyson, Ryan, Justin, Cheyenne, Jillian, Christopher and Kayleigh, his sister Irene, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents Frank and Ida, his brothers Ralph, John, Keith and Ron, and his sister Vivian.

Duane was proud to drive bus for BC Transit for 30 years in Kamloops and everybody knew him. He was an active member of the Kamloops and Chase Curling Clubs. We will all remember Duane’s sense of humor and his love for music, playing the accordion most of his life. He also loved to camp, and in his flying days “go around the patch”. He made many friends who will also miss him.

The HEAT hopped aboard the diesel pusher and travelled to Revelstoke on Saturday the 11th to face the GRIZZLIES. This event was the Travis Beaubien Night as he led his team to a 5-3 win on the road. In the 1st it was Beaubien from Musgrave to make the bears grouchy.

After 6 years of putting the building blocks together the HEAT found the right 23 Players and with excellent coaching from Brad Fox have won their 1st Doug Birks Division Regular Season Championship. With 5 games remaining in the Regular season they clinched the title versus last year’s Western Canadian Champs the 100 Mile House WRANGLERS. The 1st round of Playoffs commences on Friday the 24th at the Art Holding Memorial Arena versus the Revelstoke GRIZZLIES. Game 2 is Saturday night the 25th, then the series shifts to Revelstoke for games 3 and 4 on the 27th and 28th. If necessary game 5 would be Thursday March 2nd at AHMA, then the 3rd in Revelstoke for game 6 before returning to AHMA for game 7 on Saturday March 4th.

Three hundred and five fans filled AHMA on Friday the 10th to watch the HEAT snatch a 3-2 victory versus the 100 Mile House WRANGLERS. Pat Brady from Kolten Moore and Evan Hughes opened scoring in the 1st. In the 2nd Zachary Fournier found the back of the net assisted by Kaden Black and Spencer Farstad. A highlight of this match was a rarely called penalty shot, taken successfully by Josh Bourne while the HEAT were shorthanded. Newly acquired Mitchell Cobbett got that back for Kamloops on the powerplay. At the end of 2 it stood 2-2.

In the 3rd Hodges scored from Fidanza, and then the wheels fell off the HEAT machine as Kamloops scored 4 unanswered goals.

This one ended 6-3.

The last remaining regular season games find the Sicamous EAGLES at AHMA on Friday the 17th and then the HEAT travel to 100 Mile for game 47 on Saturday the 18th. Discount playoff tickets will be available on Friday night as well as Award Banquet tickets for the bun toss Sunday the 19th at the Adams Lake Conference Centre.
