hase RCMP is reminding parents to reinforce the basic safety principles surrounding street proofing their children, after police receive a reported of a suspicious incident of possible child luring, Thursday afternoon. On February 15th, 2018 at 4:54pm, the Chase RCMP received a report of a suspicious incident involving a 14-year old girl in the Martin Prairie Road area near Pritchard, BC. At approximately 3:30pm, that afternoon, the teenage girl exited a school bus and was approached by a man driving a maroon colored 4 door car with a black hood. The girl reported the man spoke to her telling her he was to pick her up. The girl declined the ride to which the man forcefully told her to get in the vehicle. The girl ran to a nearby residence and the man left the area. The man is described as approximately 40 years old, Caucasian with balding hairline, dark coloured hair on the sides of his head with sideburns which extended to his moustache and a goatee. The matter remains under investigation and police are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the suspect. Anyone with any info about this is asked to contact the Chase Detachment at (250) 6793221 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Secwepemc Languagesubmitted Film Festival and Book Fair
Adams Lake Indian Band and Chief Atahm School invite everyone to a Secwepemc Language Film Festival and Book Fair on March 3rd at TRU in the Irving K Barber Centre. This festival will showcase the power and resiliency of the Secwepemc language by highlighting films and books that feature the language. The film festival is accepting films on all topics. There will also be a book launch of a series of children’s books depicting stories from childhood of Secwepemc Elders. Tables will be available to display books and language resources by Secwepemc authors. The festival is a continuation of the Sewepemc oral tradition. The power of the oral tradition comes through the dynamic retellings of stories. Stories reflect a people’s history, knowledge, and values and are a means of passing them down to younger generations, thereby ensuring the continuity of culture. This festival is an opportunity for Secwepemc communities to share their recorded local oral stories, hunting and gathering events, Elder’s teachings, cooking,
crafts, youth camps, and much more. The festival also invites projects that use various forms of media to keep the language alive, including language apps, music videos, virtual reality, and web-based initiatives. Film, print-based, and digital projects have made valuable contributions to preserving Secwepemc history and language The co-sponsor of this event is Chief Atahm School, a Secwepemc immersion school that opened in 1991 on the Adams Lake reserve near Chase. Through the years the school has contributed to the revival of Secwepemc language through teaching, documenting, developing resources and training teachers in the language. Please join us for the Secwepemc Language Film Festival and Book Fair 2018. This free event will be held at TRU’s Irving K Barber Centre from 2pm to 5pm. Saturday March 3rd, 2018. The Editor’s Spot: by Kelsey Snelgrove Puzzling Metaphor There is really nothing like a good just chuck the whole thing in the trash
puzzle. My daughter is just getting to the age where she can do some bigger puzzles on her own, but still young enough that if I were to tempt her with an adult puzzle in progress on the table it would surely end up with a few pieces missing. Luckily for me, I get to work on a puzzle every week with The Chase Sunflower. Putting this little paper together really is like doing a puzzle. Each week I dump out the figurative box and hope I have enough material to work with. It takes patience, some skill, and a few little tricks. Just like with a 1000 piece puzzle of a waterfall or kitties playing, sometimes you get to the end and realize you don’t have all the pieces! The horror! What do yo do? Do you lacquer and frame that bad-boy with the missing piece and tell yourself it gives it character?* Or would you fashion the missing piece from the cardboard of a cereal box. In another hypuzzthetical** situation, maybe coffee got spilled all over your puzzle and you had to fight the urge to
and never look back. But if you’re really committed to that puzzle, you would sponge it off and hang it piece by piece on the laundry line to dry. (Solid metaphor, right?) I had a real “I wanna throw the puzzle out with the coffee water” moment last week when I realized that I had forgotten to go back and proof-read Wilf Bennett’s “Why Chase?” submission. I had typed his handwritten note out super quickly while chatting with my printer repair guy, planning to go back and spell check it after. As the last paper’s were coming off and the printer I remembered... but at that point It was too late. “Since” was “zince” and Kamloops was lowercase and so on. There was nothing I could do at that point but distribute the papers, awful typos and all. I would like to extend a thank you to Wilf for submitting his piece of the puzzle to the Sunflower, and I am sorry for mangling it! It’s reprinted on page 7... * I have never and would never actually lacquer a puzzle. ** Hypothetical + puzzle

Managing our “stuff ” is something that requires more than a modicum of control; otherwise the disorder can become an insurmountable mountain. Such things as putting items away promptly in the same place, and enforcing that with others goes a long way to avoiding Mount Mess and the stress that goes with it. And cleaning house is another chore that, although tedious, is necessary. For most of my adult life, I’ve employed something I call “drive by” housekeeping—sort of housekeeping spurts between major cleaning forays. A quick dust or run around with an electric broom, a paper towel swipe of bathroom vanity, fixtures or mirrors, spot cleaning as soon as marks appear, all these keep things under control and reduce time and effort needed to tart up the place in earnest. Oh, and my husband currently vacuums the entire house when it’s time to shovel out the stall. I look after all the other house chores as he does most of the outside work. A division of labour is a good thing. Despite my organizational efforts in the past, when I began working parttime once the children were in French Immersion school fulltime, coping with the job and the other components of being a Mom meant hiring a housekeeper— even though just once a month, she was invaluable. To have the whole house cleaned all at once was what I needed to avoid feeling overwhelmed. It was not that expensive to add this professional to my team, and I was indeed fortunate to be able to have her as a ‘Get out of Jail Free’ card. As I often said back then, ‘I’d rather spend six hours with my children than six hours cleaning. We’d have her come in and work her magic just prior to the arrival of house guests or before entertaining friends. I could then concentrate on the other myriad details and meal planning. Part Two will include additional tips and lessons learned on how to give up juggling for a balancing act.

WHY CHASE? My Dad and Mom stayed and worked up at Chase Creek for a rancher named Jack Hepburn in the 50s. Then later moved to Kamloops and worked at different ranches. Then when Mom passed on, Dad came back to Chase and got a job at Matty Ranches in the Lo Bear Creek Valley. This was 1974 and I followed him to the town of Chase. I loved the beautiful scenery of the lakes, mountains, the back roads and a different lifestyle in a little town that was real busy

THE PLAYOFFS ARE HERE! by Scott Koch, Chase Heat
After a 47 game Regular Season the 2nd Season has arrived! The Chase HEAT finished 2nd in the Doug Birks Division and will enjoy home ice advantage versus the 100 Mile House WRANGLERS. Tickets are Adults $12, Seniors and Students $10 and kids under 6 free. The best of 7 series schedule is; • Friday, February 23rd Chase – Art Holding Memorial Arena • Saturday, Febrary 24th Chase – Art Holding Memorial Arena • Monday, February 26th 100 Mile House • Tuesday, February 27th 100 Mile House • *Thursday, March 1st Chase – Art Holding Memorial Arena • * Friday, March 2nd 100 Mile House • * Saturday, March 3rd Chase – Art Holding Memorial Arena * - If Necessary All Games 7:00 pm start So the HEAT ensured a 2nd place finish with a win over the Kamloops STORM at AHMA on Friday the 16th. No scoring in the 1st, but Pat Brady on the powerplay
got the party started in the 2nd. Kamloops tied things up before the end of 40 minutes, but then they were stymied after that. The HEAT banged in a pair in the 3rd from Colton Nikiforuk and Michael Fidanza for a 3-1 victory. Conor Webb closed the door for 52 minutes until he was concussed on a dangerous goaltender interference infraction, Jared Breitkreuz went in for 8 minutes to deny the STORM any thoughts of a comeback. On Saturday the 17th Chase crawled through a nasty winter blizzard to 100 Mile House to play a meaningless game versus the WRANGLERS. The HEAT scored first, Brady again, but 100 Mile popped a pair for a 1st period lead. The teams traded goals in the 2nd, with Evan Hughes doing the honours for Chase. The Cariboo Cowboys added one in the 3rd to claim a 4-2 hollow win. Breitkreuz fended off 42 of 46 to give the HEAT a chance.
Odds and sods: Zachary Fournier is the leading scorer for the HEAT (20g, 39a, 59 pts), Brady was 2 points back (20g, 37a, 57pts.). Fournier was 10th overall in the KIJHL with Brady at 14th, the top scoring defenceman in the league. Grady Musgrave finished 15th in the sin bin with 132 minutes. Kaden Black popped in 25 goals to lead the HEAT in that category. The HEAT finished 3rd overall on the powerplay and 11th on the penalty kill. Chili and Chilly: The arena is chilly, but the Chilli Areena Cantina Girls are celebrating National Chili Day on Friday at Game 1. Come early and enjoy chili and a bun for $5 or a $7 chili dog in the warmth of the Mezzanine. It’s an indoor tail gate party where you can get all heated up socializing with friends, neighbours and like minded Heaters! See you there!
