OUTDOOR LEARNING SCHOOL IN CHASE A POSSIBILITY FOR 2018

P

arents behind a push to bring an Outdoor Learning School to Chase, are hoping this educational option could become a reality very soon. “Our goal is to have these doors open for September 2018 for K - 7,” said Stephanie Stumph, who volunteers as the Secretary for the Haldane Parent Advisory Council. Outdoor Learning is a program that follows the BC Curriculum, and aims to have the students spend a portion of every day outside. Haldane Elementary will remain open and run as usual. This will be an additional choice school open to all students in the district to enroll. Research shows that being outdoors increases focus and attention, and fosters greater engagement with learning, and physical activity. Stress, anger and aggression are reduced, which leads to improved

relationship skills and allows children to better cope with stress. Haldane PAC will be hosting a meeting on February 9th at 9:00 am at Chase Secondary School. This will be the first meeting to gather information, gauge interest, and prepare for a presentation to the School Board. “We have invited guest speakers from several areas of the district and hope to have a morning full of information, and questions answered,” said Stumph. She is heading up a working committee of parents to present this to the School Board. After this first information meeting there will be one more in the evening for parents that are not able to make it to the Feb. 9th meeting. The best way to stay up to date and involved is through the “Chase Outdoor Learning School” Facebook group!

Pedestrian

struck by train

Submitted by Chase RCMP

On January 28st, 2018 at approximately 1:45 pm, Chase RCMP received a report of a pedestrian being struck by a train at the crossing at Pine Street in Chase, BC. Chase RCMP assisted the CP Police Service with the investigation which found that a 57 year old male with mobility challenges had been walking on the sidewalk adjacent to Pine Street and crossing the CP Railway tracks. The man had not fully crossed the tracks when he was struck by a westbound train. BC

Ambulance Services transported the man to Shuswap Lake General Hospital in Salmon Arm where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries. Immediately after the collision and before the arrival of emergency personnel a motorist drove through the lighted barricades at the crossing causing minor damage. Anyone with information regarding this motorist is asked to call the CP Police Service at 1-800-716-9132 or the Chase RCMP at 250-679-3221.

The Editor’s Spot: by Kelsey Snelgrove

On the Emotional Rebound

After we got back from Alberta earlier this month, our family was hoping to stick to home for a bit. But “too bad” the universe said. At precisely the moment I hit print on last week’s paper, we received a call with the sad news that my fatherin-law, Don, had passed away. It was very unexpected. We were just visiting with him when we were in Calgary. We had gone skating at Prince’s Island Park, went for brunch, got into a classic argument. It was pretty disorienting. My partner, Paul, felt a strong pull to head out right away to be with his siblings and mom in Calgary. I had to stay to finish and deliver the Sunflower for the week. Luckily for me, our 4 year old elected to go on another road trip! That surprised me too. We’ve exited the era where it’s all about “momma”. So just like that, I was left in my big, empty house. Their weekend was taken up with sorting through belongings, making arrangements. and trading stories about Don. I spent the weekend,

for the most part, home, alone, shoveling the snow in my driveway. They returned on Tuesday evening with a carload of stuff. Our hallways are now brimming with newly acquired items to remember Don by. There is a collection of artwork, his mountain of health supplements and gadgets, but best of all, his rebounder (mini trampoline). He was always a big advocate of bouncing on a rebounder and there are many benefits (including NASA’s research showing that rebounding can be more than twice as effective as treadmill running). Bouncing actually increases endurance on a cellular level by stimulating mitochondrial production (these are responsible for cell energy). It’s pretty fun too. It’s a nice way to remember him. You could say we are bouncing the blues away. Rest In Peace Don Matheson 1949 - 2018

Here’s our Why Chase story: Unlike some pioneers who headed west with their horsepulled wagon and put down roots where the wheel fell off, our Why Chase is somewhat different. Our story started about 10 years ago when our search to relocate began. After living on a farm, contemplating a move to where you can shake hands with your neighbor through your kitchen window would never have worked for my husband. Some elbow room, sewer and water were 3 main points on our wish list. We found all those things and nice homes in Merritt, Hope, Rosedale, Yarrow, Sardis, Chilliwack, Agassiz, Keremeos, Blind Bay, Armstrong ~~ all places that caught our eye but nothing quite worked out for many different reasons. It wasn’t till we visited long time good friends here in Chase that we stepped back and couldn’t help but admire the life style of the folks in this beautiful little village. Location, friendly staff in a gorgeous library, two well stocked grocery stores, Chase Sunflower’s weekly paper, a senior as well as a community centre, a branch of our bank, quaint shops, and to my husband’s delight: Lordco and Napa! The list can go on and on with all the amenities we saw within Chase and can’t deny it, price was definitely a factor. So

we rented in a trailer court for 6 weeks during the winter of 2012 to do some more exploring. On one of our daily walks during that time my hubby noticed one property in particular and said “if that home ever comes on the market, I think that’s the one we’ve been looking for”. But without a “for sale” sign, our search was still on. Add Osoyoos, Summerland and Peachland to that list above but again, nothing quite worked out. Fast forward to December of 2015 when my husband was doing an internet real estate search when he said “hey, isn’t that the house we liked in Chase?” and sure enough, there it was - offered for sale! To bring our Why Chase to a close, we took possession of that elusive property on January 29, 2016. We've lost count on all the homes that were possibilities but suffice to say that Chase won out. In conclusion, we’ve met and had many conversations with folks here in Chase and with discovering that many of you are relatively new residents, I can’t help but wonder Why Chase. Suggested the idea to Kelsey and her insertion on page 5 of the January 19th issue of the Sunflower clarified that she felt such stories could be a fun read for all. So go ahead, share your story! We’d love to read about it. Shirley Papiz

Letters to the Editor Opinions expressed in Letters to the Editor do not necessarily reflect those of the Editor, Advertisers, or anybody except the letter-writer themselves.

TO DRIVE OR NOT TO DRIVE 55 years of driving.......... never an accident......... and I have been privileged to hand over more than $50,000 to insurance companies. This is just in case I make a bad decision resulting in a collision with another vehicle, a stationary object or God forbid an animal that just wanted to cross over....... free money that went to coffers unknown (the big black hole I guess). On Sept. 12/17 while returning from a trip to Vancouver, an 18 wheeler decided to deposit a stone onto my windshield. As a result, a tiny speck appeared. I was told that the repair for such an incident was free. I took the car into the glass shop and sure enough in 15 minutes it was fixed with some kind of liquid.....free of charge. The repairman gave me a receipt which stated ICBC was charged $85.00. Now I am no genius but even I can see the inflated cost of repairing a car. This, then, is my opinion and probably totally inaccurate........you be the judge. A portion of every charge goes to pay CEOs, managers, operators, labourers and all those who write up claims and oh, don’t forget the lawyers who fight tooth and nail to deny a claim or sue just to skim off the top. We lost; no, ICBC lost over$950 million somewhere but that’s ok; they’ll just raise the cost of insurance and we lemmings will pay and say, “Thank you.” What happens to that poor soul who is on minimum wage and must drive to his/ her job or jobs because he/she can’t afford the insurance on one income? #ILIVEWITHDEMENTIA Editor, The Alzheimer Society of B.C. thanks the people of Chase for their encouraging response to January’s annual Alzheimer Awareness Month and to our new social awareness campaign, “I live with dementia. Let me help you understand.” Our campaign aims to spark conversations and encourage residents to see dementia differently. Stigma significantly affects the well-being of local people living with dementia. In order to build a dementia-friendly society, we need to move away from fear and denial of the disease, towards awareness and understanding. This is a very pressing health issue for our aging population. Families across British Columbia are affected by Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias. Today, more than half a million Canadians have dementia and that number is expected to nearly double in the next 15 years. We would like to thank our local staff and volunteers for their work. We also appreciate the Sunflower’s coverage of dementia issues. If your family lives with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, please contact our regional Alzheimer Resource Centre at 1-800-886-6946 or info.kamloops@alzheimerbc.org for information on support groups and the many other services we offer to assist you. Attempted Robbery at Esso submitted by Chase RCMP

On January 30st, 2018 at approximately 1:10 pm, a male entered the Bear’s Den Esso near Chase, BC and demanded money from the clerk. When the suspect realized there were other employees in the store he uttered a threat to return to rob the store and left the building. The suspect did not receive any money and no one was injured during the incident. On January 31st, 2018, a 35 year old male from the Chase area was arrested for this attempted robbery. He was held in custody to appear in Kamloops Provincial Court.

Efforts have begun to integrate the book into the high school curriculum with the aid of a teacher’s guide that is now in draft form. There is a plan for high school students to assist with the research for the next two volumes. Next spring, funds from the sales of the book will be used to help cover the costs of student outdoor field trips. The Everything Shuswap Success Story Sales of the first book about the Shuswap region, Everything Shuswap, exceeded expectations when the first printing sold out before Christmas. The second printing is now in stores. Reviews have been overwhelmingly positive, including the full-page coverage in BC Bookworld by former CBC almanac host, Mark Forsythe. He wrote, “... Everything Shuswap makes a convincing case for better understanding and appreciating one of this province’s best kept secrets.” Most recently, there was a very positive review in the Vancouver Sun by Tom Sandborn, “Everything Shuswap stands alone as a compelling portrait of land, waters, wildlife and human history in one of B.C.’s lesserknown regions. Overdose Alert: Interior Health Region Interior Health (IH) is urging residents using or considering using drugs to reconsider or take steps to prevent overdose in the wake of a recent increase in suspected drug overdose deaths in the IH region. According to preliminary data provided by the BC Coroners Service, there were seven suspected overdose deaths in IH from January 23-26. The exact causes of death will be confirmed by the BC Coroners Service once their investigations are complete.

The following tips can help reduce the risk: • Don’t mix different drugs (including pharmaceutical medications, street drugs, and alcohol). • Don’t take drugs when you are alone. Leave door unlocked. Tell someone to check on you. • Use less and pace yourself. Do testers to check strength – a small sample of a drug before taking your usual dosage. • Keep an eye out for your friends – stay together and look out for each other.

• Carry a Naloxone kit and know how to use it. A list of locations to get a kit can be found on the Interior Health website or on the Toward the Heart website. • Recognize the signs of an OD: slow or no breathing, gurgling or gasping, lips/fingertips turning blue, difficult to rouse (awaken), non-responsive. If someone thinks they may be having an overdose or is witnessing an overdose, follow the SAVE ME steps and call 9-1-1 immediately, do not delay.

Basic Risotto Ingredients 2 tablespoons butter 1 medium onion, chopped 1 teaspoon garlic, minced (to taste) 2 cups arborio rice 1⁄4 cup dry white wine 2 1⁄2 cups chicken broth or 2 1⁄2 cups vegetable broth 1⁄3 cup parmesan cheese or 1⁄3 cup asiago cheese, grated Directions Bring broth to boil in saucepan. Melt butter in a different saucepan. Add onion and garlic to butter, saute until tender. Today I ran from a ticket inspector. He chased me through half the train. When he finally caught me, he wasn’t very amused to find that I actually do have the ticket. • “Waiter, could you bring me some tooth picks, please?” “I’m sorry sir but you’ll have to wait a little bit, they are currently all in use.” • Two planets meet. One moans to the other: “Can you believe it, I’ve got humans!” The other cheers her up: “Don’t worry, it will pass soon.”

Add rice. Saute 2-3 minutes. Add white wine. Stir until absorbed. Add hot broth 1/4 cup at a time. Stir occasionally until broth is absorbed. Continue adding broth in small amounts until all broth is absorbed. This should take 20-25 minutes. Try some of the rice. It should be tender but firm. When the rice is done, add cheese. Stir until melted and combined. S e r v e immediately.

HEAT ACHIEVE THEIR GOALS ON WEEKEND The past weekend featured a home and away two game series versus the 100 Mile House WRANGLERS. Friday Night the 26th of January, saw the HEAT lineup against their opposition at the Art Holding Memorial Arena. It turned into a hard working gritty game between two talented and fast skating squads. There were no pucks to be found in the nets during the 1st period. In the 2nd, six goals provided a see-saw battle, starting with Zachary Fournier on the powerplay from Michael Fidanza and Kolten Moore. The WRANGLERS came right back making it a 1-1 tie. Then the HEAT popped a pair, Fidanza from Jackson Marshall and Kaden Black, and then Fournier with his 2nd from Seamus Collins and Jayce Schweizer. !00 Mile got a tally prior to Collins from Darion Nordick and Ryan Okino making it 4-2 after twenty. In the 3rd Evan Hughes added to the lead from Colten Nikiforuk and Brett Alexander. 35 seconds later 100 Mile came on strong to attempt a comeback, however Nikiforuk ruined that bid by netting goal number 6 from Fournier and Quinn Slezak for a 6-3 home ice victory. Conor Webb stopped 37 of 40 some of them of the spectacular variety. It quite possibly was the best overall full team performance of the season.

by Scott Koch, Chase Heat On Saturday night after pushing snow from Chase to 100 Mile the bus arrived in the Cariboo. At the outset no one expected a goalfest but that’s what happened. 6 goals in the first resulted in a 3-3 tie, Fidanza getting off to the races from Grady Musgrave and Fournier. The Cariboo Cowboys netted a pair to take the lead, but the Shuswap squad came back, Black on the man advantage from Nikiforuk and Fournier, followed by Okino from Moore and Collins. With 16 seconds left in the 1st, 100 Mile tied the match up. In the 2nd the teams only managed 7, yes 7 goals to find the bullseye. WRANGLERS got one and Chase got two, Black again from Nordick and Pat Brady and then big Fournier unassisted. But 100 Mile responded with a pair to retake the lead. Black made it a hattrick with his 3rd from Fidanza and Nikiforuk to make it a 6-6 tie. But the desperados tallied again, after forty it was 7-6 Cariboo. In the 3rd the tuckered troops only managed 5 goals in their frenzy to 10. 100 Mile got a powerplay counter prior to Chase doing the same, Fidanza from Brady and Black. Then the WRANGLERS took a 9-7 lead. But a reappearance of the Cardiac Kids from Chase reared its pretty face. With 2:44 left veteran Fournier from Fidanza made

it a one goal game. With 21 seconds left and the goalie pulled Nikiforuk banged in the 9-9 tieing goal from Musgrave and Fidanza. The air was sucked out of the Arena by the local fans who sat stunned in their seats, as they had watched a two goal advantage swept out the door. To overtime the teams went, the first five minute 4 on 4 frame solved absolutely nothing. So after a brief interlude the second 3 on 3 overtime commenced. 37 seconds in Moore did the heroics unassisted in and end to end wrap around the goal to provide a 10-9 overtime win for the HEAT. A nice 4 point weekend, against foes attempting to overtake the HEAT, for 2nd spot in the standings. Chase now enjoys a 9 point cushion just weeks away from the end of the Regular season. Next up a Wednesday the 31st meeting in Kamloops versus the STORM, followed by two road games against the GRIZZLIES,in Revelstoke. Next home date is Saturday, February 10th versus the EAGLES from Sicamous. The ANNUAL AWARDS BANQUET is Sunday, February 11th at the ALIB Gymnasium and Conference Centre at 5:00 pm. Tickets are $20 and can be bought at the games or by contacting skoch01@telus.net.
