NEW ANNUAL EVENT IN CHASE
T
Winterfest
he Chase Lions Club is proud to host its first annual Winterfest in Chase on Saturday, February
19th. “Growing up, my home town had ‘Snowfest’ every winter. It was always a series of activities for young and old alike. A way of getting the town folk to get together in fun and fellowship,” said Karen Bassett, President of the Lions Club. With this inspiration, Bassett wanted to create a similar event in Chase. Once the idea was presented to the members of the Chase Lions Club, they wholeheartedly agreed that this would be a great community spirit endeavour. “We are starting off small, with one day of activities and hoping to expand it year after year,” said Bassett. This year, there will be crafts and cookie decorating in the Community Hall, as well as a Chili Cookoff Championship. You can sample the wares and vote for your favourite chef. (For these you must

preregister for as space is limited due to Covid.) While all this fun is going on, there will be a tobaggan party beside the Optometrist on the side hill. The Chase Lions will be uptown making hotdogs, cocoa, and s’mores to add to the fun. At 1 pm there will be smoosh races on Haldane Street. Preregistered teams of 4 will strap on 2x4 skis and travel down a block and back to the finish line. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd trophies will be awarded, as well as a best costume or best theme award. So put on your thinking caps, grab a few friends and get dressed for a good time of laughter and fun. Stores and shops uptown will be running some daily specials so pop in and visit them as well. “All in all we expect a good day of fun for all ages,” said Bassett. So come on out Saturday Feb. 19th and join in or just watch and have fun.
A True Hidden Gem on the VLA Flats. Mere steps from a sandy beach and the most fantastic outdoor scenery and wildlife, only minutes to town sits this wonderful 5 bdrm home on over 1/3 acre.

New X-ray machine benefits Chase and surrounding communities by Interior Health
As a kid growing up in Ontario, Tarryl Hartling had a dream of living and working in the country. She chased her dream, first to Whitehorse and onto Kamloops before accepting a position to work at the Chase Health Centre. The people and the community grounded her. Fourteen years later, she continues to work at the health centre as a registered technologist of radiology. “I live in Chase and I'm invested in the people who live there, because I know them on a personal level,” ~ Tarryl “Ever yone at the health centre works together well. Our end game is always the patients’ best interest and making sure they have the treatment they need." If that need is an X-ray, patients will now receive it directly in Chase, in a newly renovated radiology room featuring a state-of-the-art machine that began serving patients on Jan. 31, 2022. The $620,000 investment means people won't have to travel to another community for the service. The renovated radiology room also provides an improved patient experience for those needing an X-ray. The project also benefitted the entire health centre, as it required a full
electrical upgrade to the building during the installation of the machine. This included a dedicated power supply to the ambulance bay for BC Emergency Health Services personnel. The project was funded by Interior Health, but the nearby Chase and District Health Services Foundation had offered to raise money for the important purchase. As part of the project, and with the support of the Foundation, the radiology room had a complete makeover with new walls, paint and flooring as well as the addition of a power generator room and a new, ergonomically safe office. “ T h e community support from the Chase Foundation is amazing,” says Cathy Thibault, a nowretired Interior Health manager who supported the Chase Health Centre. “They were willing to ask, ‘how much this would cost?’ and ‘could they be part of the fundraising?’ We couldn’t do what we do without all of our partners." It’s an example of an all-hands-on-deck approach at the Chase Health Centre that is echoed throughout the small community of some 3,000 people. Here, the people work together to support patients and their community.

Donations That Go a VERY Long Way by Carolyn Parks-Mintz, Author, Journalist & Freelance Writer
An innovative initiative will facilitate early spring cleaning in the Chase area—while at the same time, benefiting many. Savers FUNDrive has partnered with the Kamloops Value Village store in a programme that follows the classic 3R’s rule—Reduce•Reuse•Recycle—while helping local non-profits, assisting individuals, as well as keeping usable items out of landfills. And the Chase Fire Rescue (CFR) Association is getting on board with it. Until February 23, CFR will be accepting donations of gently used articles, such as clothing, footwear, functioning small appliances, household things (lamps, linens, kitchenware), garden tools, shop tools, scatter
rugs, and décor items. CFR personnel will be glad to pick up contributions within the village. In addition to finding a home for non-essentials that we all seem to collect over time, FUNDrive will benefit the CFR Association, as well as those in need who frequent Value Village. A significant part of the programme is that Value Village contributes funds to the participating nonprofit, in this case our CFR, that match the total weight of its donations. Definitely a win-win-win undertaking. Let the sorting begin! CFR contact details: text to 778.220.3588 or email to braddon@live.ca. Out-oftown donors will be able to arrange a drop-off time and date.

Adams Lake Indian Band Council PAUSES any NEW Cannabis Businesses Adams Lake Indian Band Press Release

concerns. Band members who choose to enter this industry must exercise caution in their partnership selections, as any partnerships can affect fellow Band members & businesses on a greater level. Key considerations moving forward: · ALIB must develop a Cannabis Bylaw & operational procedures to assist in management of new businesses postmoratorium. · Public Safety is an important aspect for any business. Proper guidelines will be researched & options presented to Chief & Council at a future date. · Depending on the Governance model, a compliance component will be required. Thus, further Cannabis Meetings will be forth coming for further community input. In consultation with Membership, residents, businesses, First Nations groups and others. Band Council supports the BC Assembly of First Nations and First Nations Leadership Council representatives on the Joint Working Group on the development of a BC
First Nations Cannabis strategy and to advocate for the provincial and federal governments to recognize First Nations jurisdiction with respect to cannabis on-reserve and within First Nations respective territories, whether implemented through inherent rights and laws, First Nations land management laws, government to government agreements, or any other self-determining means. A coordinated and strategic approach to the development and implementation of a BC First Nations Cannabis Strategy which should address the topics of jurisdiction, law making and regulations, enforcement, economic development, taxation, revenues, health, safety, and education, among others, as they relate to cannabis. Taking this pause will give ALIB the opportunity to address and manage the Cannabis industry to ensure we operate in the best way possible.
INTERMEDIATE
SUDOKU PUZZLE
On January 25, 2022, Chief & Council passed a Band Council Resolution (BCR) to endorse a moratorium on any ‘new’ Cannabis retail operations on Adams Lake lands for a period of one year. This pause will enable the research, collation & presentation of a Cannabis governance model that will address public health, safety & environmental concerns. When Cannabis became legal in 2017, it opened the opportunity for retail under a Provincial license, but First Nations were not included in the development of this legislation. The Federal Government left it up to each First Nation to initiate their own Governance model to regulate the industry within their own territorial boundaries. The situation gave opportunity for First Nations people to enter this market, exercising their own rights, within their own lands. Some ALIB community members have taken advantage of the opportunity to enter the Cannabis market initiating retail businesses on IR4 & IR6 reserves despite the absence of ALIB regulations, guidelines, or bylaws. This lack of guidance has caused confusion and concerns around potential health, public safety, and environmental waste implications, in addition to creating over-saturation, congestion and traffic

BRIGHT LIGHT BIENSCH BRINGS IT BIG TIME submitted by Scott Koch
The period of Monday January 31st to Saturday February 5th had the Heat scheduled for 4 games in 6 nights. During that short game filled stretch Captain Jacob Biensch got at least a goal in each game. In the last contest he rocked a bang, bang, bang, boom of fireworks to climb up the KIJHL stat’s board. Monday night the local lads were in Sicamous versus the frustrating Eagles. Sicamous scored the lone goal in the 1st on the man advantage. In the 2nd each team scored twice, Biensch getting his 18th unassisted and Jarod Sigouin his 10th of the season from Keegan Pittendreigh and Mikkel Hrechka. No scoring in the 3rd, the bad news a 3-2 defeat on the road. It was the 4th straight win over the Heat for the Eagles. The very next night, Tuesday at home at the Art Holding Memorial Arena our guys hosted the Summerland Steam. No scoring in the 1st, in the 2nd during a man advantage the Chase crew allowed the Steam to score shorthanded. Being kind doesn’t always pay, however Sigouin scored from Hrechka and Biensch on the powerplay to make it 1-1 after 40 minutes. In the 3rd Chase scored a pair between bookend counters by Summerland. Red hot Biensch from Matthew Poole and Brayden Haskell and a minute later Dylan Handel from Sigouin and Matteo Bordin. It's 3-3 and time for 3 on 3 overtime. 16 seconds in the visitor’s score with Roderic May basically being left out to dry. May repelled 38 of 42 shots in an effort that should have been a win, with a bit of help from his teammates. The Heat travelled to 100 Mile House to compete versus the Wranglers in a weekend overnight two game series. Friday the Heat dominated but 100 Mile scored first, and then the freshly returned
Corson Nordick got things rolling from Poole and Ben Schmidt. In the 2nd sizzling Biensch from James Poole and Haskell followed by a pair from Tyson Mallet, the first from Aiden Brown and the second from Matthew Poole. Handel scored his 15th of the season from Diego Flota and Malachi Franklin to end 40 minutes of play, 5-1 Chase. In the 3rd stanza Biensch got his 2nd of the contest from Poole and Sigouin on the powerplay. 100 Mile House scored before Handel on the man advantage got his 2nd from Sigouin and Brown put this one to bed, a 7-2 victory aiding a good night’s rest. Chase outshot the Wranglers 48 to 20 with Jack Osmond stopping 18 of 20 shots. Last of 4 in 6 nights found Biensch “Chubby Checkering” (ask your grandma) with his twisted twig dance partner all night long. Again, Chase saw the Wranglers open scoring. Captain Biensch then figured in the next five twine twisters commencing with a shorthanded twine finder from Garrett Martin. Next up an ordinary one for him assisted by Trevor Kennedy, then a Kennedy net finder assisted by Biensch. Just before the buzzer buzzed to end 20 minutes Biensch popped in another counter aided by Handel and Hrechka. A hat trick in the 1st with an assist to boot. In the 2nd…yes…Biensch scores his 2nd unassisted shorthanded goal. Lucas Ouellette on the powerplay scores
in the final minute helped by Poole and Handel. In the 3rd Flota adds to the team total unassisted, 100 Mile House gets one and Nordick concludes the twine tweeks aided by Poole and Handel. An 8-2 win, shots on goal 50 to 18 Heat with May stopping 16 efforts by the Wranglers. Biensch with 4 goals, 1 assist, is an easy selection for player of the game as well as week! Jacob currently sits 4th overall in KIJHL scoring. Your Heat hit the road again, Tuesday the 8th in Kamloops, Friday the 11th in Revelstoke and a home match Saturday the 12th versus the Kamloops Storm. A brief mention about a pair of rearguards worth talking about, Malachi Franklin and Bryan Fraser. Malachi from Cranbrook arrived in Chase in last year’s shortened season. The Assistant Captain tried out with the La Ronge Ice Wolves of the Junior A SJHL, prior to returning to display his talents on the Heat’s solid backend. General Manager Lars Pittendreigh considers Franklin to be one of the classiest young gentlemen in team history. Fraser from Kamloops plays an old school style of defence on the backend. Pittendreigh states “ Bryan leads in bringing a tremendously hard working effort each and every game while making life miserable for the opposition”. Both young men will play important roles in the upcoming playoffs.

Village of Chase Council Meeting of February 8, 2022 - Highlights submitted by Village of Chase
Council’s regular meeting of February 8, 2022 was held at the Community Hall and via Zoom. One person attended in person and three virtually. Council heard from Michael Shapcott, President of the South Shuswap Housing Society who was speaking on behalf of Don Cavers who wishes to develop property in Chase to provide for affordable housing. Mr. Shapcott explained to Council that the development will not be able to provide for affordable housing if all off site works must be completed as part of the development. Mayor Crowe indicated to Mr. Shapcott and Mr. Cavers that this item would come back to Council with additional information in the near future. Council members shared their municipal activity reports since the last Council meeting and received reports from Administration. The Fire Chief provided his report verbally. Several resolutions will be submitted to SILGA (Southern Interior Local Government Association) including advocating for additional funding for Road Rescue Services. Council gave first two readings to a Zoning amendment bylaw that would allow, once adopted, the property at 909 Foothills Road to operate an online auction. The bylaw will now be submitted to a Public Hearing. Council received reports from the various community organizations who received grant funding in 2021 including the Adams River Salmon Society, the Chase and District Museum and Archives and the Chase and Area
Young Learners Society. Council passed a resolution to submit an application for a grant to install headworks improvements at the Village’s waste water treatment plant. Council approved a grant-in-aid for the Chase Young Learners Society for their “Out of the Smoke” program. The grant request to the Royal Canadian Legion Chase Branch was denied based on Council’s policy that the program must be of direct benefit to the community and local area. While the Legion does terrific work in our community, the particular request did not fit with the policy requirements. Council passed a resolution to direct Administration to prepare a report on the feasibility of disposing dedicated highway to the property owners of 838 Shuswap Avenue.

Thanks from COVID Vaccination Team Volunteers
submitted by Chase + District Health Services Foundation - Community Clinics Volunteer Team Community Health Volunteers say Thank You to all of the Chase Residents who get their COVID Vaccination inoculations. Thank you for your positive consideration of the whole Community. This is about our family, our friends, our neighbours, our youth and the impacts of this Global Health Crisis on our community. This is about the local impact here in Chase and the resulting Health Burden that has been placed on our local Health Care Providers; the Doctors, the Nurses, the Techs and Health Care Staff. All of the Health Services Departments and Resources have been negatively impacted. Yes - we all rely on the Local Health Care Services and Facilities, including the Ambulance Services, the Community ParaMedicine Paramedics, the First Responders, and the RCMP. Most small and rural BC Communities are facing the same dilemma - NOT ENOUGH STAFF to facilitate and provide ongoing Health Services or Resources for the numbers of BC residents getting sick (and in some cases dying). We believe that community groups and individuals can help. The Chase Community Health Care Team Volunteers have assisted the Chase Health Centre and Interior Health Authority COVID Vaccination Team with 26 days of COVID Vaccination Clinics, 1 day Drive thru Annual Flu Clinic and 5 Cooling Centre Days. The volunteer team consists of 8 to 10 people and an average 8 hour day (held in the Chase Community Hall and the Art Holding Arena and at the Chase Curling Rink parking lot for the drive thru Flu Clinic. In total having 8 volunteers for 8 hour days for the 27 clinics is a little over 1720 hours donated and that’s pretty good support from Chase Community. Thank You Chase and if you get the chance please be extra kind and supportive of all our local Health Care Providers, because where would we be without them.

1922 Nov 24 – 2022 Jan 27 (age 99) James Moore died peacefully at home with family in Chase BC. He was predeceased by his father Sydney, mother Belle (nee Harding), sister Ruth Davis (Harold), brother Charles (Sheila), sister Frances Philips (James), daughter Ruth Slobodian (Nestor), and daughter-in-law Jill Stocks. He is survived by his wife Wilda “Billie” (nee Douglas), sister Sharon Heichert (Alvin) of Kamloops BC, son Douglas of Cold Lake AB, daughter Janice Winfield (David), nine grandchildren (Sheri-Bea, Terri-Lea, JamieRay; Laura, Patrick, Heather; Philip, Andrea, Steven), and fifteen great-grandchildren. Jim was a veteran of WW2, Korea, and many UN Missions. He made strong buddies in those conflicts, and he and Billie collected many more life-long friends in their postings spread from coast-to-coast and Germany. Always one to support family and friends, he regularly drove on country-wide loops to visit. He and Mum were there to babysit the birth of all their grandchildren. There will be no service at his request. You are welcome to share your support by visiting at any time over the course of the year. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity – Dad was a long-standing member of the Legion. Many thanks to the staff at Parkside Community Retirement Living for their loving care throughout the years Jim & Billie have lived there.
