Golf Simulator

How did this happen? Why did we decide on putting in a golf simulator? Well, mainly because Kelly was extremely persistent. Annoying even. Trying to persuade me every single day. Eventually I got tired of him talking about it, and caved into the idea, and after getting it all set up and seeing it in action, I’m SO glad I listened to him. He was right. (Don’t tell him I said that). Kelly and I both share a love for golf, and we play as often as we can in the Summer, and now with this cool addition, we might get a little more practice in! If you haven’t seen it yet, we highly recommend swinging by the lanes and checking it out. The

machine allows you to play nine holes, eighteen holes, or practice on the driving range, chipping range or putting greens! The cost to play is $50.00/hour (regardless of how many people are in your group), and we ask that you bring your own golf clubs, golf tees, and CLEAN golf balls. We have been lined up with tee times this week, which means another big change for Village Lanes - as of Monday, February 21st we will be open from 9:00am9:00pm Monday to Saturday, and 9:00am-5:00pm on Sunday’s. We are thrilled to be able to offer this brand new form of entertainment to our little Village, and can’t wait to have

On top of her large workload, she still found time to host a fundraiser to recognize the incredible work the Chase Fire Department does. She is the warm light that guides us, and the limit of her kindness feels endless. Today we are proud to recognize Courtney for her leadership and thank her for giving it her all.

PEAKING, STREAKING WITH FANS FREAKING submitted by Scott Koch

The 2021-22 season has been a roller coaster of highs and lows for the local Chase Heat. With two regular season games to play before League playoffs commence it appears the team is peaking, fans are freaking and a five game winning streak is the result. Good signs indeed and to continue the success the petal must be to the metal the rest of the way. Three games went into the books this past week and they involved facing the two top teams in the Doug Birks Division who are also two of the top teams in the overall KIJHL. Timely scoring, solid netminding and a lot of attention to detail kept the Heat in all three games. Game 1 a Tuesday night the 8th encounter at McArthur Sportsplex in Kamloops versus the Storm on the Olympic size ice. Lots of space, speed and skill, not a single tally found the mark in the first twenty minutes. In the 2nd the Storm struck first and built a small incline for the Heat to climb. Lucas “Oh” Ouellette popped in his 13 of the season unassisted and after forty it’s 1-1. In the 3rd period Trevor Kennedy from Jacob Biensch and Jarod Sigouin notched the go ahead goal. Before regulation time expired Kamloops equalled things up and it’s time for overtime. A minute and 14 seconds in, Mikkel Hrechka fired the winner for a 3-2 overtime 2 points. So many to recognize for their efforts, Jack Osmond denied 26 of 28 to ensure his team stayed in this one, Hrechka with the winner and Diego Flota who the Kamloops webcrew thought was the cream of the crop. Game 2 and the Heat head to the Revelstoke Forum to face the Grizzlies and several hundred fanatic Aussie ski bums on Friday the 11th. Kennedy starts the scoring on the man advantage with his consistent goal a game pace, with help from Dylan Handel and Sigouin. Team

leading scorer Biensch adds a second on the powerplay from Kennedy and Handel, after 1 it’s 2-0. Tyson Mallet from Owen Dean and Osmond scores in the 2nd period to add to the lead. Before this stanza ends the Grizzlies score creating a nail biting finish. In the 3rd hand eye marksman Handel pops his 17th of the season from Sigouin and Hrechka with this contest in the books a 4-1 road win for the Heat. Osmond shines again stopping 46 of 47 Revelstoke attempts, Sigouin continues to assist on approximately every other goal scored, Handel ends with a goal and assist with Kennedy cont inuing h i s consistency. Game 3 and finally back at the Art Holding Memorial A r e n a playing in front of a large loyal fan base the Heat face the Storm for the 2nd time in the week. The carrot a win and the season series ends 4 and 4, with these two teams preparing to face each other in the first 7 game playoff round. The Heat come out on fire and Ouelette once again pops in the game opener with aid from Sigouin and Handel. Kamloops gets one against the flow and it’s tied. Too much enthusiasm during a man advantage and everyone in the offensive end finds Kamloops scoring two goals on the same penalty kill. Two breakaways and Roderic “May Day” May was left alone and at the mercy of two sharpshooters. In the between period break someone definitely said something inspirational as the Heat came out with firecrackers in their pants. Hrechka

from Ouellette and Sigouin got Chase to within a goal. Then the team’s youth duo got involved, Matteo Bordin got his 1st of the year from Handel and Ouellette. Later, Garrett Martin unassisted tweaked the twine with his 6th of the year. Penalty leader Brayden Haskell scored to end the 2nd from Biensch and Bryan Fraser, it’s 5-3. In the 3rd Kennedy from Biensch and Haskell scores the 5th unanswered goal on an empty net for the Heat. Shortly after Kamloops gets one, the Heat hold on for a hard earned, scintillating thriller 6-4. The loud and proud fans deserve recognition for their game long encouragement of their team. May kept the team in this one with some high light reel saves, Ouelette enjoyed a solid week’s work as did Sigouin and the youngsters showed that the entire team played a role in the united success, all accomplished at the right time. Next game of the regular season is a meeting at the local Chaos Castle on Friday the 18th versus the North Okanagan Knights. Saturday the 19th the regular season concludes with a bucking bronco battle with the 100 Mile House Wranglers in Chase. The first round of the playoffs starts Tuesday the 22nd at McArthur Island versus the Kamloops Storm, game 2 same place on Wednesday the 23rd. The series then moves to Chase for games 3 and 4, Friday the 25th and Saturday the 26th. It’s the playoffs and the heat will be turned up. Best to bring a cushion for those bum bouncing plastic buckets we call seats, you will be glad you did while enjoying hot Heat action on cold ice!

New Economic Development Programme to Welcome Newcomers by Carolyn Parks-Mintz, Author and Journalist

The Village of Chase, along with Clinton, Penticton, Salmon Arm and Vernon, is embarking on an innovative provincial initiative designed to encourage new business start-ups in smaller communities. BC’s Entrepreneur Immigration Regional Programme (EIRP) which will run until 2024, creates a path for business people immigrating to Canada to settle in British Columbia and establish enterprise ventures. C h a s e ’ s enrollment in EIRP will include identifying the types of business that are priorities for the village—and will steer immigrant entrepreneurs with a background in such businesses to Chase. A community survey will be circulated in order to obtain input into what residents feel would be good commercial choices for such new operations.

Van Kampen, bring a wide variety of experience to the project and will support the various aspects of its operation.

entrepreneur is required to have the appropriate business or management experience.

To assist with the EIRP, Committee members will be updating the Village Welcome Package, as well as Community Profile information. The Committee will also help with potential entrepreneurs’ visits to Chase, and eventually make recommendations concerning applicants to Village administration, who will then forward such information to the Province.

entrepreneur’s net worth to be at least $300,000

entrepreneur to make at least a $100,000 investment in the business

the business is to create at least one new fulltime job for a Canadian citizen or permanent resident

Q u a l i f i c at i o n s and eligibility of immigrant entrepreneurs are designed to ensure success for both the businessperson and the community, as follows: •

the new business should align with the priorities of the community

entrepreneur must demonstrate minimal English language proficiency; have been lawfully admitted in his/her current country of residency; and have, or be eligible for, legal immigration status in Canada

The programme assists with newcomers’ location decisions and allows them to learn first-hand why many choose to live in smaller communities rather than large urban centres. A Select Committee, Chaired by Village Councillor Ali Maki and whose members are Carolyn Parks Mintz, Donna Smith Bradley, Steve Smyth and Nathan Sponsored by Todd

When the above criteria are met, the business person is connected directly with the chosen possible community. Prospective candidates will have the opportunity to visit Chase to experience the Village and its surroundings, as well as to determine if the community is a good fit for their proposed business and their family. “I feel we’ve assembled an accomplished and balanced Committee with varied experience,” says Councillor/Chair Maki, “and I look forward to working with them to bring this exciting initiative to fruition. The Province has provided us with an excellent opportunity to fill empty storefronts and establish new enterprises in Chase.”

Even with spring on horizon, winter tires are needed to help keep Chase drivers, passengers safe How much longer should you use winter tires on your vehicle? It’s a timely question for drivers in Chase and around the Thompson-Nicola region as spring approaches. The annual Shift into Winter campaign points out the answer is based on safety, not seasons. “Winter tires provide better traction and stopping performance below 7C and on wet, snowy, and icy roads,” says Louise Yako, spokesperson for the 13th annual winter driving safety campaign. “Traction may be the difference between safely driving on roads and being involved in a serious crash.” Winter tires or chains are required on most routes in B.C. from October 1 to April 30. For select highways not located through mountain passes and/or high snowfall areas, tire and chain requirements end March 31. Regulated highways are marked with signs and the B.C. government provides a province-wide map of highways designated for winter tires. Information is also listed on DriveBC.ca. Some B.C. roads don’t require winter tires. For those ones, drivers are encouraged to choose their tires based on the region and conditions in which they regularly drive. Rain, slush, snow, or ice can make stopping your vehicle challenging as your tires have less traction on cold and slippery road surfaces. “For example, if you’re driving on a set of all-season M + S (Mud + Snow) tires on a rain-covered road at 80 km/h, you’ll need twice the distance to stop than you would when

LIKE the

driving at 50 km/h.” Yako explains. “You need even longer stopping distances for snow- and ice-covered roads.” Shift into Winter offers the following tips to help drivers stay safe at this time of year: Know before you go. Before leaving, check DriveBC.ca for updated road and weather conditions. Avoid driving when road and weather conditions are poor, if possible. If you have to drive when the weather is poor, make sure you and your vehicle are well prepared. Use four matched winter tires with the three-peaked mountain/ snowflake logo. Keep a winter driving emergency kit in your vehicle. Prepare yourself by knowing how to drive for the conditions before you get behind the wheel. Even the most experienced drivers can’t predict how their or the other drivers’ vehicle will react in snow or on ice. Follow safe work procedures if you drive for work, even if it’s only occasionally, and report any unsafe conditions to your supervisor.

Obituary William “Campbell” Stewart Oct. 13/1932 - Jan. 11/2022 It is with sad hearts that we announce the passing of Campbell Stewart of Pritchard B.C. He will be missed by his children: Danny and Sharon, Willie, Heather, Hamish and Lila, Dale and April and Tim as well as many grand and great-grandchildren. He will also be remembered by Lindy's children, Vicky, Jacquie, Kelly and Brian. Also survived by his sister Marj Robinson and sister-in-law Wendy Stewart. Predeceased by his loving partner Lindy, infant son Douglas, parents Robert and Agnes, and brothers Alastair and Bob. Campbell was born in Kamloops and was raised on the family ranch in Pritchard. He married his young bride Donna (Jackson) in 1954 and they spent their first few years living in Chase. It wasn't long before they made the move back to Pritchard and settled on part of the ranch raising their 6 children. Over the years he and his children as well as other family members worked very hard to improve the land, enabling him to put up several hundred acres of hay and raise some top notch cattle. Campbell was also involved in the logging industry where he formed his own company “W.C Stewart and Son's Logging” It was in the early 90's that Campbell and Lindy began their venture together. They were most content being at home where they could enjoy the scenic view of the river, listen to the lonely whistle of the trains and relish in the sight of the eagles nesting atop the large tree right outside their living room window. They will once again be reunited on the hillside that gives a perfect view of the place they called home. A very special thank you to Parkside Community Retirement Living (Chase) and Mill Site Lodge (100 Mile House) for providing such wonderful, loving care to Dad for the past few years when he could no longer live at home.

Obituary Stadnyk, John August 17, 1936 – February 18, 2021 Born in Cudworth, Saskatchewan to Nick and Mary Stadnyk, John was the eldest son of 7 children. In July of 1958 he married Greta Nelson and together they raised 6 children. John worked all across this great country and in several parts of the United States as a journeyman lineman, finally settling in BC. In 1968 they built the Mara Foodliner in Mara, BC which still operates today. They moved to Salmon Arm and stayed there for over 20 years, starting ‘Belly Acres Orchard’ and growing raspberries and his prized Gala and Jonagold apples. At the start of his retirement John and Greta moved back to Mara where John literally carved a homestead out of the side of the mountain. When this terrain got too much for both of them, they finally settled in Chase. John was a proud and longtime member of the local Lions Club. John loved gardening and could grow just about anything. His Gala apples were first class and his garlic unforgettable. He was proud of all of his ten grandchildren and whenever they came to visit he made sure they had fun and got to tour his garden and sample his many fruits and vegetables. John and Greta travelled to Japan, Thailand and Singapore, took a cruise to Alaska and drove their motorhome south during the winter months as snowbirds. John could and would talk to anybody, anywhere and they made many friends on all their travels. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to those who needed it. John leaves behind this wife Greta of 62 years, his children Tim (Carol Ann), Kevin (Kate), Michael (Christine), Kimberley, Stacey (Luanne) and Donna, as well has his 10 grandchildren and his 6 siblings. We are grateful for the care given to John at Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops last year. His ashes were spread at his favorite fishing place at his request.
