KIJHL announces cancellation of season
T
he Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL) has announced the cancellation of its 2020/21 regular season and playoffs. The decision was made following Friday’s update from the provincial government that includes an extension on restrictions in place under the current Provincial Health Order until late February at the earliest. The Chase Heat Hockey Society has done everything in their power to follow the rules set out by both the PHO and the Village of Chase. Half the team has already departed and headed home, some
guys have decided to stay until the end of the month and continue training and development of their skills, both on and off the ice. To our loyal dedicated fans, we thank you for holding strong with us, and supporting us. This was supposed to have been our 10th Anniversary on the ice, we would have loved to have shared it with you all. Looking forward to seeing all your smiling faces in the stands come September. Stay strong, stay safe, until the puck drops again.
Safety Mart will be closed Monday Feb. 15 for Family Day. This will allow our staff to spend some time with their families. Sorry for any inconvenience.

ANTI-IDLING TURN IT OFF!
Why be Idle-Free?
submitted by Chase Environmental Action Group 1) Health - Studies by Health Canada and community health departments show a direct, significant link between air pollution and respiratory health. 2) Climate Change When a vehicle is idling, it releases more carbon dioxide (C02) than when it is moving. C02 is known as a greenhouse gas (GHG) because it contributes to the Earth’s greenhouse effect. 3) Saves Money - Idling gives you zero kms/litre, the engine burns fuel without going anywhere. In Chase, idling hotspots
include the 2 CPR railway crossings and the schools. GOOD NEWS! It's easy, if you're going to be stopped for more than 60 seconds‚ turn off the engine and the following will occur: a) reduced greenhouse gas emissions and associated environmental impacts b) improved air quality and related health problems c) reduced fuel consumption/save money C’mon motorists, let’s ALL do our part and help the environment!

RCMP REPORT Submitted by Chase RCMP
FATAL HOUSE FIRE On January 10th, 2021 at 4:15 am, Chase Emergency Services were advised of a residential structure fire on Loakin Bear Creek Road. Police and Ambulance services attended. Unfortunately, the residence was outside the fire protection area, and consequently, no fire departments responded to the emergency. The two occupants of the residence were sleeping, when they were alerted to the fire by a smoke detector. One occupant fortunately managed to escape, but tragically, the second occupant was unable to escape and died in the fire. An investigation determined the cause of the fire to be accidental. The Chase RCMP would like to offer their sincere condolences to the family. CRASHES PT CRUISER: On January 5th, 2021 at 8:41 am, Chase RCMP were advised of a single vehicle rollover on Squilax Anglemont Road in Lee Creek. Police attended and discovered a PT Cruiser, upside down, blocking one lane of the road. It was immediately obvious that the collision was caused by road conditions
– that being, the road was a sheet of ice. While police were on scene, another vehicle slid off the road, into the ditch. No one was injured in either collision. Aim Road Maintenance was asked to attend in order to address the road conditions. MISSED EXIT: On January 12th, 2021 at 8:08 pm, Chase RCMP were advised of a single vehicle roll-over on the Pritchard exit of the Trans Canada Highway. Police and ambulance attended. The driver was conscious but confused. He could not recall how (or why) the accident happened. Road conditions were favourable at the time, with minimal traffic. The driver explained that he was travelling from Kamloops to Pritchard. Evidence at the scene indicated that he missed the Pritchard exit but left the highway almost immediately after the exit. The vehicle travelled down the steep embankment and on through the grassy median. As it re-emerged from the median onto the exit lane, the vehicle rolled (possibly) multiple times, eventually coming to rest on the driver’s side - some 200 metres from where the vehicle initially left the highway. Luckily the driver was wearing a seatbelt, which likely saved him from serious injury. LOGGING TRUCK: On January 19th, 2021 at 1:23 pm, Chase RCMP were advised of a collision on Squilax Anglemont Road in Lee Creek. A logging truck with a full load of logs rolled, while negotiating a corner, spilling logs all over the road. The driver suffered minor injuries, which were treated at the hospital. A local company assisted in clearing logs to allow a single lane of alternating traffic. It took several hours to clean up the scene. Charges are

being considered and the matter is still under investigation. STOLEN/RECOVERED THINGS SNOWBLOWER: On January 7th, 2021, Chase RCMP received a report of a stolen snow-blower, that disappeared, from a residence's backyard sometime during the night. On January 7th, 2021 at 11:51 pm, Chase RCMP were advised of a “found” snowblower. The complainant reported that a snow-blower appeared in the backyard of a Chase residence. The snow-blower was hidden behind the shed on the property. Police attended and determined that it was indeed the stolen snow-blower. It was seized and returned to the owner. Suspects have been identified and the matter is still under investigation. UNUSUAL CALLS SHOTS FIRED—Maybe: On January 27th, 2021 at approximately 4:00 pm, the Chase RCMP Detachment received a call on the non-emergency line, from a female who screamed that there were “shots fired” in Seymour Arm. The line then disconnected. Police were unable to trace the call and had no further information. Police made the two-hour drive to Seymour Arm and conducted patrols of the small community for an extended period of time. Chase RCMP received no further calls about any gunshots. Police who were conducting patrols of Seymour Arm did not locate anyone who had heard any gunshots. PARKING: On January 25th, 2021, Chase RCMP were advised of a “suspicious vehicle”. The complainant called from a residence in Chase, to report that someone parked a vehicle on her lawn, and then walked away. Police attended and located the vehicle, which was parked on the grassy shoulder of the road. Police spoke with the driver, who advised that he parked on the shoulder in order to take up less room on the narrow road. When advised of the complaint, he said he would park on the road completely next time.

Obituary
Diana Lee Foster 1956-2021 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Diana on February 4, 2021 at the age of 64, after a long battle with MSA, which she was diagnosed with in 2012. Diana is lovingly remembered by her spouse of over 35 years, Ken Shaw, her daughter Ashley (Ryan), her daughter Braelyn (Leon), and new granddaughter Averie. Also left to cherish her memory are her mother Judy; siblings John, Becky, Lorna, Dawn, and Lomma; along with many very dear friends and extended family. Diana worked for many years as a medical office assistant for family physicians in Chase and then for the Chase Optometric Center, before having to retire early due to her illness. Her strength, positive attitude, and grace in dealing with her condition were an inspiration to those who knew her. Citizen of Chase, I recently became aware that a senior and his dog had been visited twice by the animal control officer regarding a minor complaint. This elderly gentlemen, a long time resident and outstanding citizen, who can be seen daily walking his dog, was extremely upset. His dog is well cared for, vet checked and friend of many in Chase. When walking, the dog is always leashed and comes home to a nice house and totally fenced yard. This little
dog is definitely "man's best friend". I realize the animal control officer is a mandated position but lets deal with the real concerns rather than make petty complaints. This is close to elder abuse of a man in his late 80's. Citizens of Chase, let's show that kind, caring spirit we're known for. It only takes one rotten apple to spoil the box. Yours Truly, Euphemia Johnson
