HOME SWEET HOME IS IT! Submitted by Scott Koch

o the Chase HEAT Hockey Team played a trio of contests on the Family Day long weekend. The outcome was great at home and ugly on the road. Friday the 6th saw the talented Nelson LEAFS at the Art Holding Memorial Arena in front of a good size crowd. There was no scoring until 7 minutes into the 2nd period when Kaleb Boyle scored his 47th career power play goal assisted by Trevor Okino and Chad Wilde. Nelson got that 1 back with a 5 on 3 PPG to tie things up. In the 3rd Chase popped 3 in the enemy’s net to take a 4-1 victory! Kolten Moore from Alex Durbeniuk and Tommy Brown followed by Logan Mostat on the power play from Moore and Brown. With 50 seconds to go Moore unassisted, got an empty netter. Nic Bruyere went the distance in this goaltender battle stopping 46 of 47 to be named “Home” star. On Saturday the 7th in 100 Mile House good fortune took a back seat

due to a lack of overall effort. In a chippy contest versus the WRANGLERS in the Cariboo Mecca the HEAT lost 5-1. The only HEAT marker was in the middle frame from Cody Hodges from Okino and Boyle. Family Day the 9th saw the HEAT versus the Kamloops STORM in the big smoke. An opportunity to redeem themselves fell flat as the Kamloops squad posted a 5-3 win. Chase got on the board in the 1st, Brown from Tyler Mork and Travis Beaubien. Pat Brady with his 1st ever KIJHL goal, also scored in the 1st from Michael Fidanza and Okino. In the 3rd Hodges from Brady and Boyle gave the travelling fan base some hope, but the outplayed, outgunned Chase crew had little interest in the outcome and were rewarded with a loss they fully deserved. Pat Brady, with a goal & 2 assists, received the “Away” star. ICE CHIPS: Nic Bruyere was a bright light in goal all weekend who received

little support from his team mates. Brady and fellow affiliate player Michael Fidanza both showed desire and talent in the Kamloops Contest. Durbeniuk got his first penalty of the year in the home ice win for shooting the puck over the glass! The HEAT remain in 2nd place in the Division standings but will have to win Friday to clinch Home ice advantage in the 1st round. Friday the 13th 100 Mile is at AHMA at 7:00 pm and Saturday the 14th the HEAT hit the road to play the Grizzlies in Revelstoke. The KI playoffs commence the weekend of the 20th. Home or Away????....To be determined…

Club Needs Fresh Curlers by Kelsey Snelgrove

he Chase and District Curling Club held a fundraising pancake breakfast on February 8th, trying to raise money to keep up with operating costs. Beyond needing folks to come out and eat sausages, the curling club really needs new membership for it to continue into the future. “This year we went up a bit, which was nice to see,” said Dave Williams, Chair of the Club. But overall the numbers are way down from the peak of the late 90’s. Registration takes place in October and teams are formed for the leauges then, but if you are interested now there is room for spares. If you have an interest in trying the sport, email the curling club directly at admin@chasecurling.ca, somebody will be happy to show you the ropes. With mens, ladies, mixed, seniors and even a junior league, there is something for everyone. Clubs like this serve an important role in small towns. “I like the social part of it. Sitting around the club after curling is a great way to spend a relaxing evening,” said Williams who curls 4 nights a week.

e!

Curling is a competitive sport, but it can accommodate different skill levels. When the curling season ends mid March the curling club is available to rent for private functions, meetings, or other activities. The next breakfast will be on Sunday, March 8th. It’s $7 for all you can eat pancakes, sausage, orange juice and coffee. All proceeds go directly to the curling club.

NUTS ABOUT HOMESTEADING Submitted by Oli Martens

Is the world we live in different than it was "X" many years ago? Have things really changed? When I look around I question how much our physical reality has changed. The internet has certainly given us something to do that we didn't before. I might argue that the internet is "doing" us. Have we lost our balance? Our connection? We are living in a global economy but where does that leave a place like Chase? "Chase - Part of YOUR Global Economy". Sounds catchy…..I guess? Call me a Luddite, but I think the cart is off the tracks.

Request For Proposals #1-15 Provision of Caretaker Services for Village Facilities The Village of Chase is seeking Requests for Proposals from qualified proponents for the provision of caretaker services for some of the Village owned facilities for a two-year contract term. RFP documents are available on the Village website at www.chasebc.ca, by emailing a request to dco@chasebc.ca, or a hard copy can be collected from the Village office. Completed proposals must be received in a sealed envelope and labelled: RFP #1-15 - Provision of Caretaker Services by 4:00pm Monday, February 23rd, 2015 at: Village of Chase, 826 Okanagan Avenue, PO Box 440, Chase BC, V0E 1M0 Attn. Nonsense Botany by Edward Lear

VALENTINE JOKES Q: What did one pickle say to the other? A: You mean a great dill to me Q: What did the boy octopus say to the girl octopus? A: Can I hold your hand, hand, hand, hand, hand, hand, hand, hand, hand, hand? Two antennae met on a roof, fell in love and got married. Their wedding ceremony wasn’t fancy. The reception, however, was excellent.

Any and all inquiries regarding this RFP must be submitted in writing by mail to the address above or by email for attention of: Tammi Pretty, Deputy Corporate Officer, dco@chasebc.ca

The Village of Chase reserves the right to accept or reject any or all proposals, modify the terms of the proposal at any time, to waive defects in any proposal document and to accept the proposal which it may consider to be in the best interests of the Village. The lowest cost proposal or any proposal will not necessarily be accepted.

I am excited to be a community member of Chase, and the spicy new Sunflower. I am starting a group called Chase Homesteaders (or something like that) and my aim is to provide a resource and commentary for people interested in our local reality. Every week I hope to give you inspiring reasons to learn skills that use human power and human hands. Like: This fall I was pleased to find myself planting nut trees. There is a great historical farm outside of Kelowna called Gellatly Nut Farm Regional Park. This farm is truly a store of wealth. It has locally-adapted and disease resistant nut trees; chestnuts, walnuts, hazelnuts, heartnuts, and more. PLUS it is a really beautiful park on the lake in Kelowna. The best time to plant a tree was yesterday. My name is Oli and I am a homesteader in Chase.

Feb 10, 2015 Council Meeting Briefs

At its February 10 meeting, the Village Council dealt with the following matters: • Adopted an amendment to the Village’s Outdoor Burning Regulation Bylaw – this reduces the size of ‘campfires’ and increases the fee for the required permit to $25 • Council passed a resolution that includes the writing of a letter to the Federal Minister responsible for Canada Post that calls for the reversing of changes to services announced by Canada Post, and the writing of a letter to the Federation of Canada Municipalities (FCM) to request that consultations take place with the Canadian public before major changes to the postal system are made • Council was informed that the two main projects being undertaken by the “Project Comeback” initiative will be completed with the funding that was made available under that program – Council also put “on hold” the proposed Events and Activities Coordinate initiative until additional information is provided to Council on how the initiative might best be achieved • A new “lost wages” policy was adopted by Council that will provide for some reimbursements for lost wages for fire fighters that go out of town for training • A draft zoning amendment bylaw was given first and second readings to change the land use permissions at 251 Shuswap Ave (currently vacant) to allow for future develop-

Bowling, Dinner & Dancing Submitted by Village Lanes

This past weekend Village Lanes played host to eight different cities and 120 competitors from across the North Okanagan. The proprietors and staff at Village Lanes were thrilled to host the North Okanagan “B” Intercity Championships for the first time. It was a great day had by all! After the bowling was all said and done, staff and competitors headed over to the Chase Community Hall to enjoy an amazing dinner provided by the Legion Ladies, and danced the night away with entertainment provided by Patrick Reilly. In the men’s event, Salmon Arm took the gold, while the Chase Men’s Team placed 6th overall. The Village Lanes ladies team did an outstanding job, placing 2nd overall, falling short of the gold to Team

Vernon. Salmon Arm proved to be tough competitors once again, winning the mixed event. The overall aggregate champions and winners of the 2015 “B” Intercity went to Team Vernon. Congrats to all of the competitors on an outstanding weekend! Thank you to all of the people who were absolutely crucial to the success of this tournament! Village Lanes will be hosting the house rounds of the National Classified tournament this coming Sunday to determine which of our local ladies and men’s teams will move forth to the Provincial Finals! Swing by the lanes to catch the action at 1:00pm on November 15th!

TEN questions With.... Each week we’ll talk to a different person This week we are talking to Vic Calvert, who among his numerous business ventures owns the Underwood Hotel building in Chase. Q• First question: what’s with the shorts? A • I wear shorts almost every day of the year. That’s how you can recognize me - I will be the guy downtown w e a r i n g shorts in a snow storm. Vic outside the Underwood Q• You’ve been involved in many business ventures. Can you tell me a bit about some of them? A • After high school I joined the RCMP and ended up stationed in Edmonton. When I quit the Mounties I moved back to BC. I started Lakeside Insurance in Salmon Arm. In 1981 I

bought a ranch in Chase Creek and started Eagle Rock Boys Ranch for troubled boys. After that I opened a home in Salmon Arm for the people from Tranquille Institute and I still have this facility. In the 1980’s we got into ostriches real big. I had 250 ostriches at one time that I sold to Australia for breading stock. We still have a few ostriches at my Ranch, those are my pets. I got involved in teak through ostriches actually. Long story short I went to Thailand and fell in love with the teak and teak carving. I imported eight 40 ft. containers of teak into Chase. I like commercial buildings, so I got into that business. One day, almost 3 years ago, The Underwood Hotel was for sale. It is such a neat old building, we’re almost finished renovations. I am trying to preserve it’s heritage. Q • How did you end up in Chase? A • I was born in Salmon Arm. I’ve been here twenty years and I love it. I think Chase is a lovely town. Cont’d on page 5
