250 people turn out to support Fish & Game Club

The Chase & District Fish and Game Club’s annual Banquet Fundraiser was a rousing success! The Adams Lake Indian Band Conference and Recreation Centre held all 250 attendees of the event, which was held on February 7th. The raffles, draws and silent auction were very well supported, said club member Ivan Hawley. The club would like to thank all the sponsors and donors for the support. “They came from Salmon Arm and

Kamloops and everywhere between,” said Hawley. The fundraiser helps the club put on different activities throughout the year such as Youth Archery which is happening now on Wednesday nights in Chase.

TEN questions With.... Each week we’ll be asking 10 questions of a different member of our community. This week we talked to Patricia Burke, of the Burke Law Firm in Chase. Q• Where can you usually be found? A • Unlike Vic, I don’t hang out at work all of the time! I can usually be found near my cellphone because I don’t tend to stay in one place much. Q • How did you end up in Chase? A • We moved out to Big Shuswap Lake and I found it very peaceful and healing for where I was in my life at the time. In 1997 we moved the law firm out to Chase and after that I became more and more involved in the community. Q• Do you have a motto for life? A • In every situation look for the lesson and always count your blessings. AND if you ARE blessed, BECOME a blessing. Q • What do you like about Chase? A • It’s a small, friendly town. I love that you can go sit in Craig’s Bakery and someone you know will come sit down with you. Q • What do you think Chase needs? A • A community centre for kids, more recreation and activities for youth. Q• Have you learned anything new lately? A • I am taking Spanish lessons. Q • What are you most proud of? A • I think of all the jobs I’ve had -

freelance photographer, I’ve been in the fitness industry, worked in personal growth, I’ve done a lot of things... I am most proud of my role as a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and as a wife. Q • What are your hobbies? A • I like contributing to others, I like painting, gardening, and I love spending time with my family and friends. Q • You mentioned Mexico, what are you doing there? A • Since November we have been back and forth to Mexico helping out people there. There was huge hurricane in the Bahamas and most poor people there were left with absolutely nothing. Friends from Vernon started a project helping people build houses. They’ve built 20 homes now so far. You build the people there a 8’ x 12’ house with a roof and a door and a window and they think they’ve just won the lottery! It’s so rewarding to see them doing better. Q • What is your favorite place in the world? A • Fiji. There are so many beautiful places in the world but Fijians are so amazing. They will not physically touch you, but you will leave emotionally touched. Q • Who should we talk to next? A • Harold Lewis. He is amazing.

I was born and raised in Finland and for the past 8 years I’ve been living on Adams Lake Indian reservation. As an immigrant it shocks me to see how Native people are put aside in their own existence and white people live separately on their own existence. In 1876 the government of Canada passed into law the Indian act. This act outlined what Aboriginal people could and could not do. It brought almost every part of their lives under control of government. The Indian act was administrated by the department of Indian affairs. The details of the Indian act have changed over years but it remains the law. My opinion is that this law still discriminates Native people and their culture. It breaks my heart to see any human being suffering yet I can see the suffering on Native people so strong, lacking often poor health or even just the basic needs. Yet no one talks about it and thats the sad part. Why? I hope the day will come that line between Natives and non natives (and sad to see that now theres is big gap even between Natives) will lessen and ignorance racism and stereotyping will end. As well i hope for less injustice in this hard world that so many people have to live with. I hope children and youth will be more culturally educated. With all my respect to all races. Sincerely, Maria Kalinen-Psarianu

Re: “False Leak Alarming” letter to Editor in Feb 6, 2015

I would like to clarify the information contained in the letter to the Editor as noted above that makes reference to the gas leak at Parkside Apartments. We would like to advise that the incident that was reported to have occurred at the Parkside Apartments involving a suspected gas leak did not affect the operations or our residents at Parkside Community. The incident occurred in the third building of the strata complex which is not attached to or forms a part of our community. At no time were our residents in any danger nor was there any need for an evacuation. Our natural gas appliances and all of our equipment that uses Natural Gas is serviced on a regular basis. We do agree with the letter writer that waiting for a Fortis Employee to travel all the way from Enderby to Chase requires some attention by Fortis. It seems that dispatching someone from Kamloops or Salmon Arm would have reduced the response time significantly. We would also like to extend an invitation to our neighbouring building that if the need ever arises again for them to evacuate their building, we would be happy to offer them shelter and refreshments and assist them in whatever way we can until such time as they are able to return to their units or they can make alternate arrangements. Thanks, H. Juergen Mueller General Manager, Parkside Community

IN MEMORIUM OF JEFF JOHN STEPHEN MOFFAT

My beloved Jeff, It’s been 4 years since you passed away and I miss you so much every single day. My sadness and pain I keep inside of me with a smile on my face for everyone to see. Now our son is gone too - more grief andpain. I miss you both. God Bless You. Till we meet again. From your loving wife Annie, and family

Arlie passed away peacefully on February 9th, 2015 at the age of 84 years with family at her side. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Sid; her children Nonie (Greg), Ron (Anne), Donna and Les (Darquise); and grandchildren Jonathan, Alaina, Jenny and Erica; her sister Mary and brother Doug (Dolores). She was predeceased by her parents Donald and Ruby Welsh; sister Betty and brother-in-law Howard. Arlie was born on June 24, 1930 and grew up on the family farm in the Kinistino area of Sask. She married Sid on Oct 9th, 1953. Their married life led them to Lloydminster, SK and then to Okotoks, AB where they ranched for about 4 years. In 1970, they moved to the Chase area settling in Adams Lake and in 1976, they bought their home in Chase. Arlie loved gardening and it wasn’t long until the front lawn turned into the biggest vegetable patch on 2nd avenue. She was always a hard worker and spent many hours at the kitchen sink canning and washing her bounty of vegetables. Arlie was an accomplished golfer and bowler and enjoyed baking, making puzzles and was always up for a game of cards. She enjoyed knitting with her “stitch” group and knit many “Arlie sweaters” for the new babies of friends and family. If any relatives wanted to know anything about the family it was always “ask auntie Arlie” as she spent many hours researching and recording the family history. She loved two stepping, waltzing and doing the “Saskatchewan Polka” to the old time dance music. She made many wonderful and long-lasting friendships. Respecting Arlie’s wishes, no service will be held. The family will gather for a celebration of Arlie’s life later this year. She will be sadly missed by all of her family and friends. We wish to thank the staff from Chase Primary Health, RIH, Ponderosa and Overlander for their compassionate care and support. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to www.heartandstroke.com.

NUTS ABOUT HOMESTEADING Submitted by Oli Martens

Breaking NEWS! : A frog was spotted on Friday the 13 of February on VLA Road. My first question is, why did the frog cross the road? Second, is this Global Warming, or Climate Change? I’ve heard that in Blind Bay you could drive across the ice as little as 30 years ago. What is normal and where did it go? What are we to do about this here in Chase? This dilemma makes me think of a documentary movie called I Am. The movie tells the story of a cold and hungry man who stumbles upon a warm cabin while lost in the woods. Inside, the man finds warmth, food and companionship. His happiness dramatically increases. The documentary points out that once we have met these basic needs, our level of happiness no longer increases, despite increases in material wealth. The man who made this movie also produced Ace Ventura and a host of other block busters. He lived in a mansion and had is own private jet. After a biking accident he became depressed and went in search of the source of happiness. He now lives in a trailer and has sold off his unnecessary possessions. So a frog in February

may be strange, but how is this linked to being happy? Being involved in local food production is a great way to improve your health, the health of your community, and in these strange times it might even ensure your future happiness. Have you noticed the rise in food prices in recent years? And the persistent decline in food quality? With this strange weather comes a vulnerability to industrial farming practices. The UN released a report stating that small scale organic farming is the only way to “feed the world.” I would say it is also the only way to maintain a world with a moderate level of sanity. Being involved in the production of your own food or supporting someone you know is a choice we all have. How else are we to address climate change? Waiting for a corporate solution will only be the next level in the Franken-farm saga. A local group called the Young Agrarians has been running farm tours in an aim to connect people to their place. It has also been linking aspiring cashpoor farmers to land-rich farm owners. If interested check out: youngagrarians.org/ tag/okanagan/ Weather or not here we come. My name is Oli and I’m a Chase homesteader.

Nonsense Tales by Edward Lear There was an Old Person of Mold, Who shrank from sensations of cold, So he purchased some muffs, Some furs and some fluffs, And wrapped himself from the cold.

Take us to Nationals submitted by Village Lanes

It was an exciting weekend at Village Lanes for many of our local bowlers, a select few of them onto the Zone Finals to represent the Village of Chase, and hopefully, earning a spot in the Provincial, and even National Finals! The National Classifieds tournament was held this past Sunday, an event in which teams are made up of 5 players, all residing in different average classes. Congratulations to the ladies team advancing onto the Zone Finals, Kristyne McCoy, Sandra Coates, Karen Dennis, Ali Maki, and Linda Woodford. Woodford threw a whopping 344 game in the final game of the tournament, to beat out second place by just 18 pins! The men advancing on to the Zone finals are Ray Jackson, Patrick Wright, Terry Echlin of Napa Auto Parts, Elmer Dodds, and Kelly Collins! The men were incredible, and may have even set record breaking scores in this tourna-

ment. Congratulations to Terry Echlin on a massive game of 362. The men range in average classes from 150-240, and as a team averaged an astounding 230 per person. Congratulations to all of you, and do us proud at the Zone Finals! This coming weekend Village Lanes will be hosting our 2nd Annual February Bowl-A-Spiel, where players will compete to get their name engraved on the coveted house plaque, and enjoy a steak dinner on the Saturday evening. In conjunction with this event, the Village Lanes Bowling Club hosts a Silent Auction to raise funds to offset costs for out of town tournament fees, team shirts, etc. If anyone in the Village has any Silent Auction Items that they are willing to donate please feel free to bring them by Village Lanes any time before this Friday! Cheers everybody, and we will see you at the lanes!

REVIEW OF: The 100 Year Old Man Who Climbed Out His Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson

Completed proposals must be received in a sealed envelope and labelled:

Ready for a laugh? This book will deliver one. The Swedish author ties together a hilariously lucky man’s story with some of history’s most infamous political characters. From the protagonists humble origins in Sweden his adventures take him around the globe on a rollicking adventure that will have you perched on the edge of your seat waiting to hear what comes next. Unlike some historically-based stories, you don’t need to know the history to appreciate the hilarity and the coincidence of what Allan Karlsson goes through in his life. The back of the book compares Allan to “Forest Gump (if Gump were an explosives expert with a fondness for vodka…)” and the

description couldn’t be more accurate. From Sweden to Spain and the USA to Russia, China and Indonesia, Allan is a well-travelled man by his 100th birthday, but his adventures aren’t over yet. This book had me with tears of laughter in my eyes, and I learned a few things too. Comes highly recommended from me, and once you’ve read it you can watch the film, which was just released last year. Happy reading!

In a meaningless game for the HEAT on Valentine’s Day Saturday the 14th in Revelstoke the GRIZZLIES won 4 – 1. Chase got their lone digit late in the 2nd
