Curling Championships in Chase submitted by Karen Whitfield
The 11th annual BC Provincial Stick Curling Championship was held in Chase, BC over the weekend (Feb 1617, 2019). Sixteen 2 person teams competed in a four division round robin. Teams hailed from Armstrong, Prince George, Salmon Arm, Enderby, Vernon, and Chase. The semi-finals were Sunday morning with Tim Smith and Chris Pieper (Armstrong) curling against Don Price and John Vaughan (Chase) in one semi-final and Derrell Sears and John Campbell (Armstrong) curling against Dwight Barna and J. Kratchmer (Enderby) in the other. Based on games and ends won, fourth place went to Price/
Vaughan (Chase) and third place to Barna/Kratchmer (Enderby). The other two teams were on to the finals in the afternoon. The final game between two Armstrong teams was close and interesting. Smith/ Pieper score 1 on the first end with Sears/ Campbell scoring 1 on the second end. The remainder of the regular ends were blanks. The first extra end also came up blank so an eighth end was played. In this end Smith/Pieper managed to sit 4 rocks and won the game 5 – 1. Congratulations to Tim Smith and Chris Pieper on their win and thank you to all the teams that participated and made the bonspiel very enjoyable.

Village of Chase Council Meeting Highlights February 11, 2019 and February 12, 2019 submitted by Village of Chase
Council held a Special public meeting on February 11, 2019 to deal with a few items that needed attention. •
•
Council discussed budget meetings and agreed to hold a public budget meeting on Monday, March 25, 2019 starting at 4:30 p.m. – this meeting will be well advertised – it will include the operational and capital budgets for all the Village’s departments including Fire Department, Public Works, Administration and Legislative. There will be a time for public input once the budget bylaws are considered at Council’s March 26 regular meeting. Council also reviewed leases that exist with various organizations and individuals in Chase for land use including the Lions RV Park (owned by the Village and leased to the Lions Club), the space at the Community Hall owned by the Village and leased to the Chase Hamper Society, and portions of land near the sewer
lagoons that are leased to individuals for rodeo usage and grazing of animals. Council will deal with each individual lease agreement as they come up for renewal. While all leases have individual aspects to them that differ from one another, they also need to be considered similarly to ensure equity amongst all users of Village owned lands.
•
A member of the public enquired about how much was owing by the Recreation Centre Society on the existing loan that is guaranteed by the Village
•
•
Council also discussed meetings to be held with the local Indigenous community leadership, and directed Administration to set up meetings with the various band Chiefs and Councils.
A member of the public stated they had concerns about Council considering allowing members to participate in council meetings by electronic means
•
Council heard from Councillor Tim Lavery of the City of Salmon Arm regarding the upcoming SILGA conference which will be held in Penticton this year
•
Council also passed a resolution to allow the Village’s Fire Department to provide fire suppression support to the south side of Pritchard if required while the Pritchard bridge was closed for rehabilitation.
•
Mr. Jim Bepple, local resident, requested Council’s consideration of providing a permanent heli-pad for air ambulance landing in Chase
•
Council gave first and second readings to an amendment to its Procedure Bylaw which will allow one member of Council at a time to participate in Council meetings by
Council’s regularly scheduled meeting was held February 12, 2019 and the following items were discussed:

The bylaw requires notification before Council can consider adoption. •
•
Council approved a development permit for the building of a 3 storey, 30 unit apartment building on Shuswap Avenue at Willson Street. The proponent explained that it is his hope that the building can be ready for occupancy sometime in 2020. Council approved an amendment to the Loan Guarantee Indemnity Agreement with the Chase and District Recreation Centre Society to permit additional borrowing by the Society to facilitate the installation
of a well and necessary equipment so the golf course can irrigate without the use of treated water from the Village. •
Council received information from CivicInfo BC, and the Recycling Council of BC.
•
Council passed a resolution to add Councillor Scott as Council’s representative to the Shuswap Tourism Committee as Councillor Maki is no longer able to fulfill that role.
•
Council passed a resolution to apply for more grant funding to proceed with flood risk assessment work within the Village’s boundaries.
The next Council meeting will take place on Tuesday, February 26, 2019 starting at 4:00 p.m.

HEAT MISS PLAYOFF OPPORTUNITY by Scott Koch, Chase Heat
The Chase HEAT spent the past few weeks clinging to a potential playoff berth by their finger nails. Friday the 15th in Princeton versus the POSSE they saw that opportunity slip away. Tony Dennis from Tyson Lampreau and Ethan Joe sandwiched a goal between two from the foes in the 1st period. There was no scoring in the 2nd period. In the 3rd Princeton fired a pair prior to Breckin Erichuk from Evan Vinterlik and Gavin Mattey scoring to make it a 4-2 game. That’s the way it ended on a slow and snowy bus ride night. On Saturday the 16th the HEAT hosted the Osoyoos COYOTES at the Art Holding Memorial Arena. The HEAT were hot
as they tallied twice in the opening 20 minutes, Tyler Collens unassisted and then Erichuk from Kasey Jackson. Ahead 2-0 going into the 2nd Erichuk got a second goal assisted by Cody Allen and Vinterlik. The COYOTES woke up briefly and fired a pair to get within a goal. Vinterlik closed out 2nd period scoring with assistance from Mattey and Hayden Wiebe. In the 3rd Osoyoos popped one in, followed by Evan Hughes from Allen and Lampreau. Osoyoos took over and fired 3 in a row to claim a questionable 6-5 victory. The game winning goal was scored on an four foot offside missed by the Officials. Mayhem was the name of this game as the Referee

allowed this one to get out of control. A total of 228 minutes in penalties were handed out with Chase receiving 122. In all 3 periods the penalty boxes were overflowing with players in what was a disconcerning display of immaturity from both squads. The 2018-19 season wraps up this weekend with a road game in 100 Mile House on Friday the 22nd, followed by a home game Saturday the 23rd versus the
North Okanagan Knights. The Annual Awards Banquet is Sunday the 24th at 5 pm at the ALIB Conference Centre. The $20 gala includes a guest speaker, team video, jersey and silent auction, award presentations and a chicken pasta dinner. To reserve tickets call 778-220-6955. You get the opportunity to chat with your favourite HEAT player, so see you there.
