Chase Museum News

96, 97, 98, 99….?

submitted by Dick Hermann, Chase and District Museum and Archives Society A few days ago, I was reminded of the time when my three-year-old great-granddaughter was proudly demonstrating to me that she had learned to count. She started at one, which is the normal starting place, and counted correctly all the way to 96, 97, 98, 99… but then she stopped, because she had not yet learned what happens after 99. What caused me to remember that little incident is the fact that as of February 2020, we have 99 fully paid-up members of the Museum. The membership usually goes down a bit at the beginning of the year, so I am happy to report that that level was sustained into the new year. I am also pleased that a positive trend seems to be indicated. Memberships in 2017 and 2018 were 41 and 52, respectively. Also of interest is the fact that the number of visitors to the Museum in 2017, 2018 and 2019 were 581, 559 and 907. As well as locals, visitors have come from Korea, Australia, Switzerland, Mexico, and the UK. I expect that everyone understands that there are three membership categories— Life Members, Individuals Members, and Family Members, with each valid membership in each category counting as one Museum membership. Although I am happy to report that we currently have 99 members in good standing, I am a little disappointed that I can not

report in three digits. After all, we can count that high, even though my greatgranddaughter could not. I can also report that we have a new curator at the museum. Her name is Breanne Malo, and she joined us late in 2019. As a result of her long-time interest in history, Breanne has an Associate of Arts Degree from Douglas College, and a Bachelor of Arts Degree with Honours in Anthropology from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David. She had been working at the R. J. Haney Heritage Village and Museum, and when the opportunity came to fill the position of curator at the Chase Museum, she jumped at the chance. And probably most importantly, she works as a museum curator because that is her “dream job”. She likes it. Breanne has already created new exhibits about two old time local residents, as well as a veteran’s display and a Chase hockey display, and has also gotten stuck into the work that remains to complete the recovery from the museum fire of 2011. There is still much that remains to be done to organize the Museum artifacts so that they can be easily found to answer visitor’s queries, and/or put on display. Breanne is new to the Chase area, and thus does not yet know many local people. To help get to know folks she would like to meet all of the Museum members, and invites everyone to drop in

OUT EVERY WEEK!

Chase

to the Museum at their convenience, to renew their memberships, or just to say hello and see what is going on. And of course, we welcome everyone who may wish to become a new Member. From my own point of view, I remind everyone that Museum memberships are on an annual basis and need to be renewed every year--$10 for an Individual membership and $15 for a Family membership. The support of its members is very important to the Museum, and is greatly appreciated. The on-going operation of the Museum is dependent to a considerable extent on grants that the Museum obtains from various sources. The availability and size of these grants is dependent on the number of active Members, because this is seen as measure of the support within the community. So we urge you to renew your memberships as soon as possible to keep the membership level high. And for my own satisfaction, I would like to see the number of memberships move into the three-digit range, so I can show my great-granddaughter that there is a need to go beyond 99. She is the same little three-year-old imp that reprimanded me severely one morning. When I walked into our living room drying a cup that I had just washed in the kitchen she scolded, “You should only do that in the kitchen!”

Singin’ Pete Seeger... One More Time!

Bowties and Broccoli

by Carolyn Parks Mintz, Author and Journalist In case you missed the tribute concerts last spring—or arrived at the theatre to find the shows were sold out—Wildwood Productions cast and crew are mounting this celebration of talented singer/musician/activist Pete Seeger once again. Show dates are Saturday, March 14, at 7:30 pm and Sunday, March 15 as a matinee performance at 2:00 pm at the Shuswap Theatre on Hudson Street in Salmon Arm. Tickets for out-of-towners may be booked in advance by calling 250.832.2300. Admission is by donation at the door, with all proceeds going to support the proposed Shuswap Performing Arts and Culture Centre. So take in the Wildwood gang’s show—which will

include performances by locals James Mintz and his wife, your journalist— to sing along as they honour legendary folk singer Pete Seeger’s musical gifts and accomplishments. His career began in the 1940’s and evolved as a method of bringing about social justice and equality, simply by having people sing together—and it did just that. Pete’s brave exposure of prejudice and disparity through music did much to encourage others to d e m a n d change. Yes, the times they were a-changing and needed to—still do. Many thanks, Pete!

POSSE RODE IN WHILE EAGLES FLEW submitted by Scott Koch, Chase Heat

With 2 games next weekend to complete the regular season your HEAT will face the Sicamous EAGLES in the final of 6 games in the Battle of the Shuswap. That happens Friday the 21st at the Art Holding Memorial Arena. Saturday night the locals are in Kamloops at Memorial Arena versus the STORM, a short drive down Highway 1 for an evening of entertainment. Sunday the 23rd everyone, and we include you the reader is invited to the Annual Awards Banquet at the Adams Lake Conference Centre. The doors to the bun toss open at 5:00 pm and mouth watering roast beef is the center of attention on the menu. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at Friday’s game or by calling Sue at 250-320-5060 or Laurel at 250-319-7511. Paralympic athlete Greg Stewart is the inspirational guest speaker. Rub elbows with friends, neighbours and players while bidding on silent auction items. A night of laughs, tears and memories…don’t miss out! A recap of the past weekend saw a duo of duels at the local Chaos Castle. Friday the Princeton POSSE were guests and the HEAT squeaked out a 3-1 win. Caleb Biensch started the scoring from Danton L”Heureux and Carden Alec, Princeton then tied it up. L”Heureux scored on the man advantage with helpers from

Trevor Kennedy and Matthew Poole. The 2nd period was blanked and in the 3rd Brandon Gremaud from Evan Hughes iced the contest. Dylan Barton between the pipes denied 32 of 33 in outstanding fashion. Saturday the EAGLES flew in to town. After the guests popped in a pair of counters signs of a comeback surfaced with Rhys Lepine getting the monkey off his back with his first of the season from Gavin Mattey. In the 2nd Sicamous scored another couple of counters, and then the comeback roared into action. 5 unanswered goals put this one away for the hosts. Mattey got the party into full swing from Cameron McKenzie and Jayden Russell followed by Jacob Biensch from Mattey and Corson Nordick. Hayden Wiebe from Breckin Erichuk, followed 39 seconds later by Trevor Kennedy from Evan Hughes. Kennedy then got goal number 2 of the night from Erichuk and Mattey on the powerplay to bring the curtains down on the night’s production. Barton stymied 34 of 38 shots, stopping 14 alone in the crucial 3rd period. All of it a weekends worth of work alongside banged up buddies and adoring fans. In closing, do you remember the guy that gave up? Neither does anyone else!

Visible House Numbers Crucial submitted by Chase Fire & Rescue Every second counts during an emergency. The Chase Fire and Rescue Department would like to remind you that visible house numbers will help us and other emergency responders get to you faster. Valuable time can be lost if a house number is not clearly posted, is not visible in daylight or at night where emergency responders can see it.

Some helpful tips to ensure we can easily find your address: • Visible by passing cars • Easily found, seen and readable from the street • Easily seen both at night and during the day • Visible from all directions • Not hidden by shrubs, trees or decorations • Stay fire smart and stay safe.

JUST SAYIN’

An Opinion Column by The Old Cowpoke

Love the Customer? Client? Visitor? …Guest?

Better believe that under all this snow is Spring… and since Spring is a time for businesses to tune up their ways and set up for the warmer months ahead, cash register-bound traffic is certainly allimportant. Have you thought of removing the words, “client or customer” from your business vocabulary and perhaps start to focus on a new-to-you philosophy of greeting everyone as a “guest”? A number of years ago I spent some time at the Disney Institute in Orlando and with various of their management team instructors leading the way, my classmates and I followed along on behind-thescenes theme park walkabouts through most of the Disney attractions. Michael Eisner, at that time the organization’s CEO and top banana joined some of us at our table for breakfast one morning and it was interesting just how he interacted with everyone he met up with. Mike reminded me more than once that Walt had it right… at Disney everyone is a guest. (Unless you’re a “Cast Member” as they refer to their front of house staff are on-stage to produce the best show for the guests!) The Disney staff training manuals rarely mention, “customer, client or visitor”. Everything at Disneyland is about presenting and providing a wonderful show and memorable guest experience. A simple philosophy really: the guest takes a positive memory away, tells everyone who’ll listen and often as not, returns. And other guests show up. I gotta wonder why so many businesses we throw our money at don’t get it. At this point my experiences in the Shuswap prove that most new faces are indeed treated as guests. If you’re a business owner remember that a guest is similar to someone you’ve invited into your home for either a short visit, a meal or a pleasant overnight stay. And you’d love to have them back. Although I’ve yet to meet them, unfortunately some business people decide not to be welcoming. They scowl,

make little if any eye contact, turn their backs and pretend to be doing something more important, more necessary. Maybe they’ll take or make a cell call, text something “very important”. And the guest awaits the proprietor’s or server’s pleasure instead of the other way around. The meaner business people kinda growl, grumble, grunt then groan when their guests ask something. Maybe something’s stuck up their arse or they’re gonna run a bit late for their tee-off time if they slice off a minute or two for person who’s the one paying for their round of golf. For cryin’ out loud if you’re in any business… pay attention to who’s “writing your paycheck" and treat everyone like they’re a special VIP guest. Dammit, get with the program! In my travels around this area I’ve noticed that most frontend folks bend over backwards to greet everyone walking up to the counter. And while some folks might be just itching to hit the ball, fish a bit or just hang with a cold one, most will do whatever it takes to provide memorable moments in their establishments. We’ve gotta remember that business at both ends gotta be fun. Getting into the spirit and enjoying that magic moment of making a connection with someone whether you’re the welcomer or the welcomee should be a joy for all concerned… just sayin’.

MINING THE MINDS OF HEAT VETERANS ON WHY CHASE? submitted by Scott Koch

Way back in early November 2019, the writer sat down with the five 20 year old veterans of Junior Hockey in Chase. The subject was …why Chase, why the HEAT? The responses follow and provide a glimpse into young junior hockey player’s travels and decisions in our Nation’s game. The round table discussion included Cam “Watty” Watson, Evan “Hughie” Hughes, Colton “Niko” Nikiforuk, Caleb “Bienscher” Biensch and Vince “Benny” Bennedetto. Watson and Hughes are Salmon Arm products, Nikiforuk is from Maple Ridge, Biensch from Marsden Saskatchewan and Bennedetto from Edmonton Alberta. Their stories are as follows… Cam Watson’s friends Evan Hughes and Dallas Stewart tried to talk him into attending HEAT

Prospects Camp with them. “I didn’t think I was ready for Junior. Hughie said come on it’s going to just be fun and a couple of nights sleeping at the rink. So, I talked to Foxy (Head Coach Brad Fox) and he let me in. From there I got invited to Main Camp and I was an Associate Player the 1st year, I loved the staff, the guys on the team and the way we were all treated. The next year I tried out and made the team. My Mom deserves a lot of credit for getting me here for early morning practices that first year.” Evan Hughes spent his 16 year old year as an Associate Player for the Sicamous Eagles. “I had two options the second year, Sicamous or Chase. I signed with Chase because Watty talked so much about how he was treated. Watty was right, the program, staff and guys were awesome.”

Colton Nikiforuk started the 2016-17 season with the Osoyoos Coyotes. “I was a school kid and they committed to me for the year. In November they wanted to trade me, even though I was in school. I got traded to the Pacific Junior Hockey League and bounced around until I decided to play for my Midget AAA team in Maple Ridge. Chase called and I signed with the Heat for 2017-18. In 2018-19 I went to the Junior A SJHL Nipawin Hawks for the season. I kept in touch with the guys in Chase and they convinced me to come back and finish my junior career on a high note with them”. Caleb Biensch tells a different story. “I was in Midget AA and my older brother got me a shot with Camrose Kodiaks in the AJHL. No sooner did I sign then I was released before the home opener. With all the Junior A teams with their rosters set I contacted a buddy that was playing for the KIJHL Kimberley Dynamiters and he said 'come here'. So, I arrived in Kimberley and they had 9 defencemen and 7 were veterans. I wanted to develop as a defenceman and the coach wanted me up front. So, I went home for a week and requested a trade. Mason Palaga was with the Dynamiters and he basically talked me into Chase. We drove around for hours talking about the HEAT. He loved it here and told me everything was great. So, within two days of arriving I was settled. It’s great here, a small town vibe like back home with an amazing billet home. I tried post secondary school this year but after a few weeks I missed this too much. I phoned Foxy and he said 'come on back'. The guys were surprised when I walked in the room. Making this the best decision I have ever made, this team is the best I’ve ever had. Unreal boys, coaching and staff.” Vince Benedetto toured Western Canada. “I left home in Edmonton to play Midget AAA in Grand Prairie. At 18 years of age I tried out with the Kindersley Klippers of the Junior A SJHL, but I was cut. They suggested I play Junior B for the West Central Rage in Kerrobert Saskatchewan, which I did for that year and loved it. In 2018-19 I moved on to the Red Lake Minors Junior A organization in Northern Ontario and played the full season. Early this year they determined they didn’t want to go with 2 twenty year old tenders and I was released. On the drive home to Edmonton I mulled over where to play, thinking the KIJHL is somewhere I wanted to play. I stopped at a gas station in Winnipeg and my phone rang, it was Brad Fox offering me a spot on the HEAT. Wow, it was definitely meant to be, so I decided to come, definitely a good choice and I am glad to be here.” The round table wound down with the five veterans chatting about this year and the team. Watson and Hughes felt this was the closest group of guys in their 4 years being with the HEAT. Biensch exclaimed that the 2 years were the best time of his life, everyone here is within walking distance of each other. Benedetto stated the guys were real welcoming when he arrived and it was easy to become part of the group. Watson commented that with five old guys it spread the pressure out. As they got up to go, they all agreed that they wanted the year to be a great one, to win big!
