'Bubble Guy' Inspires Audiences to Persevere FREE SHOW IN CHASE THIS SAT submitted by Chase and Area Young Learners Society
A newly formed society, The Chase and Area Young Learners Society, is bringing "bubbleologist", Geoff Akins-Hannah, to town for a unique, FREE show at the Chase Community Hall this Saturday. Geoff has been entertaining, educating, and empowering children and adults alike worldwide for over 30 years with his gentle spirit, sense of humor and gift of rapport. Inspired by his life-altering experiences as a teacher in Waldorf and Special Education he created The Bubble Wonders Show to convey the message that “Anything is Possible!” Bubble Wonders is fun, inspiring, educational, and captivates both young and old. Bubble Wonders is full of amazing bubble tricks including the bubble caterpillar, bubble volcano, the dancing bubble, bubbles inside of bubbles, Kid inside a Bubble and more. Throughout the show there is a running gag where Geoff attempts to achieve his dream of creating a Square Bubble. He intentionally fails each time but doesn’t give up (modeling persistence) and by the end of the show he figures out a way to successfully make a square bubble… a “Bubble Cube!”
Geoff uses the wonders of bubbles, magic and storytelling as ways to capture and redirect the viewer’s attention. His presentation also shows others how to rekindle a sense of wonder in their own lives and demonstrates how persistence and a positive attitude can help make your dreams come true. The Chase and Area Young Learners Society is a group formed to provide opportunities for young people in the Chase area to access resources, activities, and spaces that will advance their learning. The group also aims to encourage child-led learning and the enjoyment of nature. There will be kid's activities at 1 pm, and the Bubble Wonders show will start at 2 pm on Saturday, February 29th. Admission is free, thanks in part to the ‘Helping Hand’. Donations to the Chase and Area Young Learners Society will be gratefully accepted. There will be popcorn, a craft, a bake sale and a photo booth. There is a power outage scheduled in Chase for that day, but BC Hydro has assured us that the Community Hall's power will be on, so we hope to see lots of folks come out for the show!

HEAT AWARDS NIGHT BANQUET The 9th Annual HEAT Awards Banquet was held Sunday, February 23rd at the Adams Lake Conference Centre. Close to 200 hockey lovers filled the room to enjoy a sumptuous roast beef dinner put together by a team of volunteers. Most of those hardworking souls have done that unenviable task since the banquet’s fruition. HEAT President Darryl Adamson introduced the stars of the evening, the players during the opening “Jersey Hanging”. With full shields and equipment on it is hard to know what the dapper coiffed lads look like off the ice. The introduction provided a m p l e opportunity for recognition presented by: as they toured the room. Dinner and desert SUNNYBRAE followed, with the majority of treats provided by the artistic Colleen Patterson. Adamson then presented the Rhonda Kenoras Vo l u n t e e r of the Year Forecast Award, ably your monthly assisted by retirement income. when for the first time there were two recipients, both from the same family. Sue Inkster a long time dedicated volunteer of a vast number of duties and tasks which includes Board Director, merchandise, season ticket sales, bookkeeping, concession and many other things was honoured. As well Sue’s son Cody Inkster was honoured as the co-winner through his hockey operations role as an Assistant Coach to Brad Fox. The married father of a young son, with support from his wife Katie has provided a great deal of valuable time in helping to put a winning product on the ice. Congratulations to Sue and Cody! The President then introduced t o w e r i n g guest speaker Greg Stewart, a world class Paralympic shot putter to the stage. Greg kept the crowd enraptured with his trials and tribulations of growing up. Through the good and bad and being “different”, he got the point through that we are all different and it takes strength and perseverance to reach our goals. The message presented was well received as the HEAT prepare for the fast approaching playoffs. The players were all provided with a moment in the limelight as Team Photographer Andrea Stelter provided a video collage of action shots of each player from the Regular season. Head Coach Brad Fox and his Assistants Cody Inkster and Kolten Moore then took the stage to present 11 awards and two very memorable special presentations. Continued on page 6...

Crannóg Ales celebrates 20th anniversary with many events submitted
It's time for a party at Crannóg Ales. The Sorrento brewery is celebrating its 20th Anniversary with a variety of events, from workshops to tastings and one big punk rock party. The first organic and on-farm brewery in Canada continues to break new ground in their 20th year, with their "Sedition Series" of workshops and cask beer events. Workshops focus on building an alternative and much more sustainable society - from seedsaving to union organizing, language and culture to permaculture. "After all this time, we are renewing our commitment to build a better world," says Rebecca Kneen, brewery co-founder and farmer. "The workshop series allows us to share skills and analysis to empower everyone. These speakers are people who inspire us and kick our butts to make us do better." The Sedition Series is held either at the main farm house (706 Elson Road) on Wednesday evenings or at the brewery on Friday nights. This series is entirely pay what you can. Friday night events include beer (fees apply), Wednesday nights do not. The first workshop in the series is on seed saving - a critical skill for all gardeners as we face climate change, multinational control over seed breeding, and reduced seed resources. By saving seeds at home, everyone can build biodiversity, feed pollinators, and ensure food security
for generations. By saving your own seed for a few years, you will develop locally adapted versions of your favourite varieties. Melons will become shorterseason, beans will be selected for those which dry in time, or you can develop your own tomato variety! March 11 - Seed Saving with Wise Woman Seeds (Sedition Speaker Series) 7-9 pm at Left Fields, 702 Elson Road (upstairs at the farm house), Speaker: Sarah Bradshaw, Wise Woman Seeds. Pay what you can - Explore what it takes to save seeds of your favourite varieties. How to determine which seeds you have the capacity to grow out, annuals vs. biennials, species selection and isolation distances are the basis of seed garden planning. Learn these concepts and how to apply them to your own garden design. Basic knowledge of gardening and horticulture is required - you have to know the difference between hybrid seeds and open pollinated seeds, and basic gardening techniques. Bonus - you'll be able to purchase seeds at the workshop, along with other resources! For info contact: Rebecca Kneen, 250675-6847 crannog@ crannogales.com

In many of the awards there were more then one recipient. Top Scholastic Player was determined by Chase Secondary on the basis of academic standing, with Fan Favourite being voted on by the fans. The first Special Presentation was the traditional recognition of the junior hockey graduating 20 year old players. In 2019-20 there were five players recognized; Cam Watson, Evan Hughes, Colton Nikiforuk, Caleb Biensch and Vince Benedetto. They each received framed action shots noting the year’s they played for the HEAT in the KIJHL, a “Heat” travel bag with embroidered name and number as well as a crested black golf shirt. The most emotional moment of the evening was when Brad Fox presented 19 year old Brett Alexander with the same recognition package. Brett had his hockey career with the HEAT cut short this season due to injury. Prior to retirement he provided valuable leadership, tenacity and class. The 24 players have provided a display of skill and entertainment all season long. They aren’t finished yet as the playoffs start this coming weekend and 16 teams are vying for the “Teck Cup” symbolic of being KIJHL Champions. In closing, the entire HEAT Organization thank the player’s families, the billet homes, volunteers, fans, sponsors and donors for providing our community of Chase and surrounding area the means to have a Junior Hockey Team. It is “Our Time”.

Obituary (Frank) Francis Shelest 1929 – 2020
With heavy hearts we share the news of the passing of Frank Shelest. Less than three months since the passing of his life’s love Alice, Frank joined her on February 23, 2020. Dad was born in Poland near the Russian border on September 26, 1929. As a baby of less than a year, with his parents he immigrated to Canada in May 1930. Old country acquaintances drew them to cross the country and settle in Prince George. Dad’s youth was spent in P.G., pursuing interests in the outdoors and school sports. He graduated from Prince George Secondary, gaining experience in a few different professions he ultimately settled on teaching. Frank attended Normal School at the University of Victoria and his career commenced in rural Prince George. He married Alice in 1953 and after adding two children to the mix the family moved to Needles, finally settling in Chase in 1959. Frank was committed to obtaining his degree in education and attended summer school almost every year, finally graduating with his degree the same year his daughter graduated from high school. It was a long road but for him the perfect way to meet the obligations of his family and his work. As the vice-principal of the one school in Chase, Dad watched the community grow and the school system change, moving to the high school as vice-principal when it opened. As a father he treated his children to a wide variety of family activities including hunting, fishing, photography, rock hounding, music and community service. In 1967 he was a charter member of the Chase Lions Club. It was an avenue for him to thank the community for the life he and his family were able to live. He was very active in a number of community endeavours including the curling club, the health centre, Salute to the Sockeye, Lions Quest, the area rock club are a few that come to mind. Frank received many awards including Chase Citizen of the Year, Chase Lion of the Year, Lifetime Lions Member and also the highest Lions International award, the Melvin Jones Lions Award. Frank will be dearly missed by his children Sandy (Glenn) Vogstad of Kamloops, Rob (Sherree) of Princeton; his grandchildren Lee (Yuki) Vogstad, Tessa (Scott) Cooper, Jen Shelest, Nikki (Brad) Wutke; great-grandchildren, Lily, Dylan, Leland, Emily and Noah. Frank was predeceased by his brother Bruno (Shirley) and survived by his siblings, Walter (Marilyn), Staffie (Fred), Mike and Fran. Many nieces and nephews will remember his smile at the frequent family reunions. The family would like to thank the staff of Kamloops Seniors Village and Royal Inland Hospital – 5S for their care and understanding of Dad’s needs. A celebration of life will be held in Chase in late spring for both Frank and Alice. They will be together for life. Memorial donations may be made to Chase Lions or the Heart & Stroke Foundation. Arrangements entrusted to Kamloops Funeral Home 250-554-2577. Condolences may be sent to the family from www.kamloopsfuneralhome.com

THE END OF AN ERA FOR CHASE, BC Nick Espetveidt, Brittney McKim, Jennifer Oakland, Zack Lewis, Tyler McKim, Laurie Lewis, Bev Amundrud, Shelly Chmielewski, Dayna Clark, Caitlyn Lewis, Charlene McKim, Charles McKim, Tammy Marcoux, Chelsea Clayton, Ed Mickelson, Graham Thitchener, Greg Clayton, Shannon Lingelbach, Harold Lewis, Elaine Lewis, Monica Ghostkeeper (Missing: Kristina John) You know it was 48 years ago that Harold and Elaine Lewis bought the Marshall Wells store from Jake and Ruby Frank in Chase, BC. Harold and Elaine had been living in Prince George where Harold was a salesman for Marshall Wells and Northern Hardware. Harold was travelling on the road most of the time up north with work while Elaine had her hands full with their four kids - Allen, Charlene, Dayna and Laurie. Harold always said "Elaine had the tougher of the two jobs." During their time in Prince George, Harold became the first salesman to reach the million dollar mark in sales for Northern Hardware and Marshall Wells. Life was very busy as every young parent knows and success on the road was working out good but news came that Marshall Wells was coming to a end so Harold decided to look for his own store. He scouted different locations with his two young daughters. Charlene remembers going to one of the locations for sale in Clinton. It was so hot with nowhere to swim, which made her plead not to live there. Then they visited the small town of Chase, which not only appealed to Harold and Elaine, but also to their children who remember coming down the hill from Mattey's and seeing the beautiful Shuswap Lake and gorgeous town of Chase, BC. It was a win for the whole family.
On September 11 of 1972 Harold and Elaine Lewis plus Roy and Phyllis Short opened Lewis & Short Hardware Ltd. Within a month they were getting their merchandise under the Macleod Stedmans banner out of Winnipeg. The store was profitable from the start but shortly after a year Roy asked Harold if he could be bought out as he was going to open a hardware store in Golden. This put stress on Harold and Elaine because it was a substantial amount of money requested over a short amount of time. Well it worked out. With long hours and a strong bond in the community, both supplier and customers were happy. Over the many decades there were a lot of changes within and outside the store. In 1978, part of the store burnt down due to a young boy lighting the garbage can on fire. This adversity brought on a action plan to add a floor up and down stairs. With the new square footage there was increased traffic and sales. Life again was very busy and long hours were the norm. The family daughters, Charlene and Dayna were scheduled to work Fridays till 8pm when they were teens which did keep them within sight of their parents. The Lewis's youngest son Laurie used to come in to the store with his father who would work late and play with merchandise with his friends until they either broke something or they were too loud. Skateboarding down isles or

playing hide-and-go-seek were common. Sometimes his fathers patience was not. In 1990, they had their first banner change where a large company bought the Macleod Stedman chain. The company was called Cotter and Company which was from Chicago and we went under the banner of True Hardware. A year later, Just Ask Rental was opened as part of the store and is still very strong today. Well, with the family business it gave Harold and Elaine's kids plus their grandchildren all a job for different times over the years. At this time, we are truly sad to inform our customers that we will be closing our doors after 48 years in business. We have spent countless hours debating over the closure, but with changing times it has become very hard to keep our business going. Lewis and Short Hardware will be shut down from March 1st to March 3rd, 2020 in preparation for the closure. The store will be discounted starting March 4, 2020, until merchandise is depleted. Harold and Elaine plus family want to thank each and every customer for your loyal service and dedication for helping us stay open for all these years. We would also like to make a special thanks to the last of our staff members; Shannon Lingelbach, Monica Ghostkeeper, and Bev Amundrud for helping us walk through this, helping us with decisions, worries, laughter and hard work. You are all so truly appreciated.

SECOND SEASON OF SHINNY STARTING NOW! submitted by Scott Koch
It’s Playoff time in the KIJHL and starting this Friday the 28th there will be 16 teams facing off in 8 Arenas. YOUR HEAT see the puck dropping at the Art Holding Memorial Arena at 7:00 pm. Our Division foes the 100 Mile House WRANGLERS will be riding into Chase for the opening game of a best of 7 series. Game 2 is Saturday night before the series shifts to 100 Mile House for Games 3 and 4, Monday March 2nd and Tuesday the 3rd. You can catch the action live at www. playfullscreen.com. If necessary Game 5 is in Chase on Thursday the 5th, 100 Mile House for Game 6 on Friday the 6th and Game 7 on Saturday the 7th. At regular season’s end your HEAT finished 2nd in the Doug Birks Division with the 3rd place WRANGLERS only 9 points back. Don’t miss the best action of the year, the Chaos Castle will be rocking! In 2 divisional games this past weekend that didn’t dent the standings the HEAT faced the Sicamous EAGLES on Friday Night at AHMA and travelled
to Kamloops on Saturday to play the STORM. Friday night the hosts allowed the EAGLES to score the opening goal. The HEAT then found 6 different ways to put the puck in the opposition net to claim a 6-1 win. Corson Nordick from Danton L’Heureux and Marino Bordin started the scoring. Local kid Gavin Mattey from Breckin Erichuk and Carden Alec then stretched the twine. Cameron McKenzie found the 5 hole for an unassisted and rarely called penalty shot. After 20 minutes 3-1 Chase. In the 2nd Carden Alec scored his 1st goal for the HEAT assisted by Breckin Erichuk. In the final period L’Heureux scored on the man advantage from Brandon Gremaud and Corson Nordick. Leading scorer Erichuk concluded the half dozen counters assisted by jayden Russell and Rhys Lepine. Vince Bennedetto denied 28 of 29 shots in his return in goal. Saturday night in the “Loops” was what it was a 5-2 loss to our divisional rivals
just down the street. The boys were thinking down the road a week instead of concentrating for 60 minutes. Kamloops got the only goal of the 1st period. In the 2nd Evan Hughes tied it up from McKenzie, however the STORM regained a one goal lead. In the 3rd it became a 2 goal lead prior to Russell from Alec and Lepine making it close. The STORM popped in a duo of counters to claim the win. Friday night Carden Alec received the nod as the Star of the Game, Brandon Gremaud received the honour Saturday. The HEAT finished the season 2nd in the Doug Birks Division, 7th combined in the 20 team KIJHL. Breckin Erichuk led scoring finishing tops on the team and in the Division and 7th overall in the league. 7 HEAT players finished in the top 100 scorers in the KIJHL, Erichuk, Mattey, Nikiforuk, Hughes, Wiebe, Watson and Gremaud. Lots of 7’s, it’s a lucky number and a nice omen for the second season… see you at the rink supporting YOUR TEAM!
