LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Yard Sale Blues
After visiting numerous yard sales a pattern began to develop that disturbed me so much that I needed to act. Too many elderly couples are forced to sell their homes in a town they love and move closer to a base able to accommodate them in their advanced age. Why do governments allow this exodus to occur? Surely they can see the value in human dignity by providing a facility for elders to live out there lives in the communities they have live for so long and contributed so much. This is a serious problem and we must put our collective brains together to formulate a permanent solution. Let this paper know your feelings and ideas before your turn comes. False Leak Alarming
Last Saturday an incident occurred at the Parkside Apartments which should be of concern to anybody who uses natural gas in this town. A gas-leak that had the apartment residents evacuated and moving their cars turned out to be a false alarm, but took the gas company an hour and a half to arrive and declare the scene safe. The employee had to come from Enderby. What if this had been an actual gas leak? We could have been blown to bits in that time. The Council should do something for people who use Fortis. This would help people feel more secure. Doris Finlay

NEW, USED + COLLECTIBLES 734 FIRST AVE, CHASE, BC You’ll notice many bizarre-looking words in the search this week - many of them are just names for February. Solmonath (mud month) and Kale-monath (cabbage month) are old English terms. Helmikuu (Finnish) “month of the pearl”; refers to melting and refreezing ice droplets. In Polish, it’s Luty (the month of ice or hard frost). In Macedonian, it’s Sechko, meaning month of cutting wood. In Czech, Únor, means month of river ice. Vesnas are mythological characters associated with springtime in early Slavic mythology, who lived in palaces atop mountains where they discussed the fate of crops and of human inhabitants. A magical circle around their palaces kept them from leaving the mountain top except during the month of February. Chinese New Year falls on February 19 this year, during which celebrators wish each other “GONG XI FA CAI”.

THANK YOU The hyperbaric chamber therapy was the best present we got for Christmas. Thank you! to the Community of Chase. We couldn’t have done it without your support. Mirena has completed 40 treatments of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and is on a good road to recovery. Oceanside Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy was done in Parksville by Director Terry Carpenter, who was very supportive. Mirena’s grandma, Anne McLean lives in Parksville and gave us a place to stay - a home away from home. We are happy to be home so we can continue to do healing. Lisa, Drew and Mirena wish to thank everyone for their support and prayers. Chase Secondary Jr Boys Basketball Tournament, held last weekend at CSS was a success! Congratulations to our boys for finishing 2nd. A big thank you to Mr. Leonard for setting up the tournament, to Fran Connett for running the cafeteria and supplying us with her amazing food again this year, and to all who came to cheer us on

Chase Bantam players found a home on Kamloops team Submitted by Nancy Hassler
The Bantam aged hockey players in Chase were unable to form a local team this year because of lack of numbers. There were 8 players that tried out for rep hockey. Five of the 8 are on the same team, Tier 4 Rep. These five boys have had an amazing season, winning two tournaments and finishing first place in their division! Their playoff experience starts next weekend, most likely against Clearwater.

Congratulations to Chase players Dorian Billy, Gavin Mattey, Garett Jules, Cody Turner and Russell Hassler on finishing their season in first place playing for the Bantam Tier 4, Kamloops Raiders. Good luck in the playoffs!

Just behind him in second place was creator of the tournament himself, Elmer Dodds. Second place in the “B” Division went to Andrea Heitz, and first place to Bill Pacholok from Salmon Arm. After a four year break from the lanes, Bill came back in full force, throwing the high game of the tournament, with a 319. ith the month of January behind us the Chase Heat have 5 games left in their KIJHL regular season schedule. After losing to the Kamloops STORM 5-0 on Saturday the 30th they sit 2nd in the Doug Birks standings. Kamloops has a 6 point lead in 1st and 3 games in hand. Chasing the HEAT are the Sicamous EAGLES (-2), 100 Mile WRANGLERS (-5) and Revelstoke GRIZZLIES (-11). Other than the Kamloops total team snooze festival, the HEAT have been hot in their last 10 with 7 wins, 2 losses and an overtime loss. The HEAT went into the last weekend having come off a 4-3 home ice win over their closest rival the EAGLES. Tied in the standings this victory provided a small gap between the 2 in the standings. Nic Bruyere got his first start between the pipes since December 4th and provided
excellent support, stopping 33 of 36. Bruyere’s broken digit is all healed up and now gives us a superb trio between the pipes entering the playoffs. Kaleb Boyle in the 1st on the powerplay got his team on the board assisted by Cody Hodges and Trevor Okino. I n the 2nd the HEAT got two, Hayden Orton from Alex Durbeniuk and Zachary Fournier and then Kolten Moore on the powerplay from Travis Beaubien and Boyle. In the 3rd Spencer Farstad scored the game winner from Travis Churchill. Balanced scoring from throughout the lineup as the first playoff round starts February 20th. ICE CHIPS: Next up the Nelson Leafs at AHMA on Friday, February 6th at 7:00 pm. The boys then travel to 100 Mile House for a Saturday night road tilt. Family Day the 9th finds us back in the big city of Kamloops for a 5:00 pm start. Logan Mostat, Mitchell Walters, Spencer
Farstad and Nic Bruyere have all returned to the line up from injuries while Braden Hughes and Wesley Matsuda are both hampered by lower body woes and Eric Austin is close to returning from a serious upper body injury. The players have thoroughly enjoyed the large fan support that has come out in the past couple of weeks.
