Chase players make memories at Wickfest submitted by Jolene Barkman

The Chase ladies had a fantastic time at Wickfest 2024 in Surrey, BC this past weekend, and it could not have been done with all the love and support from our wonderful little community. I cannot express enough gratitude that we all feel, it really does take a village! The ladies all went down to Wickfest on Thursday Feb 1st, and enjoyed the opening party for the tournament. We were greeted by our fellow teammates from Thompson Cariboo, Logan Lake, Barriere and Kamloops. The girls partied and giggled the night away. We had our first game on Friday Feb 2nd at 10:30 am against the SnoKing Jr. Thunderbirds, unfortunately we fell short losing 3-1. Rocio Martinez scored the only goal and got MVP of the game! We played again that afternoon at 4:15 pm against the Surrey Falcons C1 team and sadly lost that game 4-2, with the 4th goal on an empty net. The girls put up a good fight in both games but were still learning each other’s names and how to work as a team. Saturday morning we had a major win over the other Surrey Falcons C2 team and beat them 9-1, Bridgette Barkman had 2 goals during the game, and Rocio had another clutch goal to secure the win. Sunday Morning was the best game of the weekend even though they lost 4-1 against the Cowichan Capitals, they put up a huge fight. Sadly Bridgette’s bar down goal didn’t count as the ref did not see it, but she was named MVP of the game. Cowichan was not expecting our ladies to put up such a fight and were caught off guard during the 1st period. Marley Logsdail shared the net with fellow goalie Kianna Fulop from Barriere, BC, she made some fantastic saves and stood on her head during all 4 games. Sophie Hofmann played mostly

defense and was steady as a rock, any one that came near her goalie was going to hear about it. Our last Chase player Leah Hofmann who played with the Thompson Cariboo U15 team won the whole division for the Bronze category! They took home the banner and some major bragging rights. They won all 5 games and crushed the competition the entire time! They beat the Sno-King Jr. Thunderbirds on Friday Feb 2nd 8-0, their 2nd game was against the other Powell River team and they won 5-1. Saturday they played the Surrey Falcon and won 5-2 and played the other Surrey Falcons team and won 4-1. The Gold medal game they played Surrey Falcons again and won 4-1! What an amazing tournament for those ladies! We cannot thank all those that helped us make it to Wickfest, the girls will never forget their time there and the memories they have made. We are hoping to get the girls together either in the Spring or next season and do another female tournament, they all got along so well and were sad to say goodbye. I want to say a special thank you to the Chase Lions Club and the Helping Hands group, they both made huge donations to the girls to make their weekend even more special. We are so happy how everything came together and we were able to enjoy every moment of the weekend.

Obituary Donald William Murray Born in Victoria, BC on May 9, 1945 and died in Kamloops on January 30, 2024. He is survived by his wife of 42 years Susan, his sons David (Kelly), Dan (Jessie) and daughter Jennifer (Josche), as well as eight much-loved grandchildren Sebastian, Brendan, Eve, Dominic, Auldin, Alexis, Leighton, and Arlen. He also leaves his sister Ellen, and brothers James and David. After spending his childhood living in Winnipeg, he moved to Calgary and then settled in Chase. After working for Holdings Lumber, an opportunity presented itself with BC Ambulance, and Don began his natural-fit career as a paramedic that lasted 32 years, serving it all in Chase. Besides his love of family, Don's passion was motorcycles - Harley's in particular - having belonged to both the Manitoba Motorcycle Club and a founding member of the Kamloops HOG chapter. Don has numerous lifelong friends in his biker community, with whom he is known as "Mother". Don loved to tell stories to his family, friends, children, and grandchildren as well as a song or two that always followed with a laugh, as they were usually a little off-colour. Don also leaves to mourn his two huskies Shelby and Grady, whom he considered family members and spoiled accordingly. A memorial service will be held in the spring to allow safer travel for family and friends. Thank you to Dr. Chevalier, staff of G8 Neurological Ward, and Kamloops Hospice for their compassion and care of Don. In lieu of flowers, donations could be made to the Chase & District Health Services Foundation.

Anniversary Announcement Brysons married 60 years Jim and Darla Bryson are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary on February 15th. We love you, happy anniversary Mom & Dad!

Navigating Digital Grief by Anne-Marie Jacobs, Red Door Doula Services

In this digital age, where our lives are intricately woven into the virtual realm, the experience of grieving has undergone a profound transformation. The loss of a loved one is an emotionally challenging journey, and the advent of technology has introduced both solace and complications to the grieving process. The pandemic has changed so many things, including the need for virtual memorials and online tributes. In the absence of physical gatherings, many individuals turn to creating virtual memorials or online tributes to honor the departed. Platforms such as social media, memorial websites, and online forums provide a space for friends and family to share memories, condolences, and expressions of support. These digital spaces become a repository of shared grief, allowing people to connect across geographical boundaries. Despite the advantages of virtual mourning, there are complications unique to the digital realm. With the instant sharing of information, some family members are notified of a passing on social media before they can be properly informed – and this causes unspeakable trauma. Also, the permanence of online content may inadvertently amplify grief as reminders of the departed persist in digital spaces. For some this may bring solace, for some this may be triggering. Managing the digital footprint of the departed becomes a delicate task. Privacy concerns arise as individuals grapple with the decision of whether to preserve or deactivate digital accounts. Unintended reminders, such as automated birthday notifications or suggested friend requests, can catch grieving individuals off guard, intensifying the emotional impact. Recognizing the unique challenges of grieving in the digital age, online support communities have emerged. These platforms offer a safe space for individuals to share their experiences, exchange coping strategies, and find understanding from those facing similar circumstances. Digital support groups provide a sense of connection in a time when physical presence may be limited.
