Chase Resident Recognized for Industry Contribution
submitted by HERB, SPICE and SPECIALTY AGRICULTURE ASSOCIATION In January 2018, the Canadian Herb, Specialty Agriculture and Natural Health Product Coalition recognized one of their industry’s most important leaders Mr. Al Oliver of Chase BC. Throughout his career, Al gained a level of expertise in botany and specialty crops that he generously shared with students, colleagues, farmers and friends. He is a force of nature. His talents have contributed a knowledge of crop production and risk management from sea to sea in Canada. He guided and lead the specialty agriculture industry through his career of 22.5 years at BC Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries, in various roles including the Provincial Ginseng Specialist and Industry Specialist – Horticulture. Al was also the BC lead on the CHSNC National Technical Team that developed internationally recognized guidelines
for the Herb, Specialty Agriculture and Natural Health Product industry across Canada. His strengths as a thought leader and a team player have made possible the international recognition of risk management protocols for the specialty agriculture industry. Upon his retirement he continued to work with plants including a collaboration with Monrovia nurseries to introduce a new blue juniper to the landscape - Burly Blue™ Juniper, Juniperus scopulorum 'MonOliver' Plant Patent pending. (www.monrovia. com/plant-catalog/plants/5507/burlyblue-juniper/) In our life journey there are usually only a handful of people who we could truly say we have been honoured to know or lucky enough to work with. Al Oliver is one of them. He is a teacher and an author who has lit the way for many.

The Editor’s Spot: by Kelsey Snelgrove Dancing Around the Answer When I do the “10 Questions with...” where I interview a member of the community here in Chase, one of my queries is usually something like “what is this town missing, or what does Chase need more of?” Often people respond like “Oh gee, I couldn’t say. I’ll pass on this one.” I would say this response is part personal humility and part of it is fear of small town politics. If you support one idea, project or activity, it shoudn’t imply that you are opposed or unsupportive of another idea. Yes, there is limited dollars and volunteer hours to go around in a small community, but they are just fun questions and I just want to hear folks’ ideas. Maybe I should re-word the question to be more approachable sounding; “What is one thing, not necessarily the ONLY thing, but one thing that possibly, might be a good addition to this village?” I bring all this up because I have one answer to that question today. I know Chase could use more DANCING! After I spend any amount of time dancing, it always feel like a revoIution. What a great activity! The stress relieving effects, the endorphins, the free-form goofiness that all ages can enjoy. I appreciate the fact that no
equipment or pre-planning is required. I rail against the idea that dancing is something you have to be good at to partake in, or inebriated to do. Dancing should not just happen at weddings, or adult-only events that you need to buy tickets for. There have been murmurings in my friend-group for a while now about the need for kid-friendly dance parties, especially during these long winter days and nights. We have a lead on some space and I think we’re actually going to make it happen soon. . From what I saw on the dance floor at the Chamber’s Christmas Gala back in December, there are a bunch of other people in this town that like dancing a whole lot too, especially the women! (Maybe a ladies night dance party is in order?!) So I implore everyone to find a way to get together with your friends and dance a little bit in February. Or just put on some tunes and bust some moves in your kitchen. Then when Music on the Lake comes around this summer we’ll all be ready to dance in public. I’m telling you, it’s what Chase needs. Oh and by the way, just because I am championing dancing here, does not mean I am opposed to sitting in any way, shape or form. I like that too.

Over $500,000 in Bursaries for Local Students Remain Unclaimed
For the fifth year in a row, Interior Savings is proudly continuing its commitment to award up to one million dollars in bursaries annually. That’s one thousand $1000 bursaries in 2018! Last year the Chase Branch awarded seven bursaries to students from this area, said Corinne Johnson, Manager of Community Engagement at Interior Saving. So far, the Chase Branch has received four applications from this area and Johnson said “we’d love to see even more local youth benefit from this program!” The goal of the Million Dollar Bursary
program is to support young people in realizing their full potential. And with over $500,000 still available for students to access, Interior Savings wants to ensure this funding doesn’t go untapped. The program is a benefit offered to Interior Savings’ members. According to Kathy Conway, Interior Savings’ CEO, “there’s still time for students to become an Interior Savings member to qualify for a $1000 bursary and for all the benefits membership offers, including our top-rated service, a share of our profits and a free account for young adults.”
To be eligible, students have until February 28th to become an Interior Savings member and apply for the bursary. The bursary program is intended for students between the ages of 17 and 24, who are entering or returning to full-time study towards a degree, diploma or trade certification program at a designated post-secondary institution, with classes starting between September 2018 and August 2019. Students can only be awarded this bursary once. Visit www.milliondollarbursary.com for more info or to submit your bursary application.

Irish Lamb Stew from www.westviamidwest.com This Irish Lamb Stew recipe is made by slow cooking the lamb in a deep rich velvety broth. Mixed with rustic cuts of carrots and whole potatoes that make this one pot meal a complete comfort food! Ingredients 2.5 pounds leg of lamb (ok to sub lamb shoulder, or any lamb roast) 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon pepper 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 pound potatoes peeled, cut to large chunks 2 large onions cut to large chunks 4 extra large carrots peeled, cut to large chunks 1/4 cup flour 11 ounces Guinness Beer (1/2 bottle) 8 cups chicken broth Instructions Cut lamb into large chunks of equal size. Season all sides generously with salt and pepper. In a large stockpot, add the olive oil and heat to high. Once oil is hot, cook the lamb
chunks in batches about 2 minutes per side until each side is browned. (see photo in post) Once all sides are browned remove to a side plate. Once all lamb is browned, and removed from the pan, add the onions and carrots and cook until the onions are caramelized about 7minutes. Then sprinkle the flour over the top and cook for 1-2 minutes more. Add the beer and deglaze the pan. Scrape up all of the lamb bits from the bottom of the pan. Add the lamb and the potatoes over the top of the vegetables. Then pour the chicken broth over the top, stir to mix then make sure the lamb is fully submerged in liquid. Reduce the heat to medium and cover. Avoid the temptation to cook the stew on high. The lamb needs to cook on medium or low so it can break down slowly. Heating too high will result in tough lamb. Continue to cook checking and stirring often to make sure the liquid is slightly bubbling but not on a full on boil. Continue to simmer for 75 to 90 minutes. The stew is done when the lamb is fork tender and the vegetables are fully cooked.

Two 3-2 Games Cap last week for the HEAT by Scott Koch, Chase Heat
What a difference a few days make in the life and times of a Junior Hockey Team. The last article noted that the Chase HEAT scored a total of 16 goals in two games versus the 100 Mile House WRANGLERS. This past week the HEAT hit the road for a pair of Doug Birks Division contests. Wednesday, January 31st it was a short trip west to visit the old confines of Memorial Arena in Kamloops. The STORM were in the driver’s seat in the 1st period notching a pair. Chase got the only goal in the 2nd, Kaden Black finding the twine assisted by Evan Hughes and Seamus Collins. In the 3rd Zachary Fournier scored on the man advantage from Kolten Moore and Colton Nikiforuk. However with 1:22 left Kamloops scored the game winner, resulting in a 3-2 loss for the HEAT. Jared Breitkreuz stopped 51 of 54 to keep his team in the game. Saturday night, February 3rd found the HEAT bus trundling east to the mountain mecca of Revelstoke. but the HEAT came right back in a very fast paced end to end game. Collins got the 1st one from Fournier and Pat Brady, then Ryan Okino slapped a counter in, assisted by Darion Nordick and Gavin Mattey. There was no scoring in the 2nd, however Revelstoke on the powerplay midway through the 3rd scored the eventual game winner. Once again the result being a 3-2 road loss for the Little Shuswap squad. Breitkreuz stopped 38 of 41 to once again provide solid goaltending. The lads head east again on Friday the 9th to face the GRIZZLIES for the 2nd time in a week. Saturday night, the 10th the boys are back in town to face the Sicamous EAGLES at 7:00 pm. The ANNUAL HEAT AWARDS BANQUET is Sunday the 11th at 5:00 pm at the Adams Lake Conference Centre. Tickets are $20 each and can be purchased at the game or at Safety Mart. The Playoffs are just around the corner starting February 23rd. Tickets are available at the remaining home games, so don’t miss out as the intensity rams up in the 2nd season.
