Museum’s Chili Contest
Most of the planned gatherings involved some form of competition which allowed the farms and ranches to demonstrate their best skills and products. The “Fall Fairs” or “Harvest Festivals” showcased the fruits of the Fall Harvests, such as best preserves, pies, livestock or produce. “Our modern chili contest pits the best of the best chili chefs against each other as
well as raises funds for the Museum,” said Ball. Participants MUST pre-register to enter. There will only be 8 spots for competitors and competitors are coming from all over BC. Call the Museum to enter at 250-6798847 or email chasemuseumsociety@ gmail.com
“Unplug byand Play” Tips & Techniques Shelley Sim, School District No. 73 Trustee, “Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children, play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.” ~ Fred Rogers It’s so easy to just plug in and before you know it, you’ve forgotten to play! And it’s not just kids who are missing the pleasure of play, its adults too. Somewhere along the line, screen time has become our life line. That’s not to say that there aren’t benefits to the digital world in a digital age because there are but as Albert Einstein said “life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keep moving”. To be mindful of the balance, save the day and mark your calendars. Unplug and Play is coming this January. This week is set aside within the SD73 District to encourage families to reflect on screen time and maybe more playtime. According to stats from ParticipACTION, Canadian kids spend an average of 7 hours and 48 minutes in front of screens. Need some motivation to power down the computer and amp up the activity? Further reports show that just one hour of physical activity per day shows kids to be better behaved, sleep better and perform better in school. But how are parents supposed to hold off the digital tidal wave? Dany Tynan, Editor in Chief of the Modern Family suggests three easy ways to ease the digital tensions that sometime
exist at home. 1. Create a contract. Sit down with your kids and collaborate on guidelines for when and how they are allowed to use their devices. Write them down so there is no dispute later over what they agreed to. Kids might also get some motivation if parents write a similar contract with some fun consequences…..broke the contract? That’s 25 jumping jacks! 2. Establish tech-free zones. This is a popular tactic to see aside times or spaces where technology is a no-go zone! Make meal time a digital free zone or hit the “off ” button at a certain time of night. Other parents find success keeping kids bedrooms gadget free. 3. Choose your screens carefully. Maybe your child is watching too many You Tube videos but what if they are about science or history? It’s not a substitute for outdoor play but learning stuff is cool. Talk to your kids about types of screen time. The call for more balance is likely good for everyone. Adults can use the Unplug and Play challenge as a digital health check too. Check out www.participaction.com for tips and tid bits on how to manage in a world that has us so “plugged” in. This website that provides not only fabulous information but also inspiration on ways to introduce new ways to play and engage. Go retro! Pull out the puzzles, start building card houses or playing charades. Make one night a week a family games night. Whatever your way, we wish you great memories of play!

Opportunity in Chase to learn about dementia
Many Chase area residents are this month making one of their most important New Year’s resolutions ever. They’re becoming Dementia Friends, committing to learning a little bit about dementia so they can be supportive and inclusive toward people with the illness, which has become one of the country’s most pressing health issues. Statistics suggest three out of four area residents know someone living with dementia. “People affected by dementia continue to live in and be a part of our communities, and we can support them to stay connected in ways that are meaningful for them,” says Tara Hildebrand, regional Education & Support Coordinator for the non-profit Alzheimer Society of B.C. for Chase and the Central Interior. “Through individual actions we can raise awareness of dementia and reduce the stigma attached to it.” The Dementia Friend campaign is the cornerstone of Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, which runs until the end of January. Becoming a Dementia Friend is easy, says Hildebrand. The process starts by signing up at DementiaFriends.ca. The
next step is to understand five simple things about dementia: * It is not a natural part of aging. *It is not just about losing your memory. Dementia can affect thinking, communicating and doing everyday activities. * It is possible to live well with dementia. * There is more to a person than a diagnosis of dementia. * The Alzheimer Society of B.C.’s Central Interior branch is here to help Chase area residents with dementia and their care partners. The Society has supported people living with dementia for 35 years. One of its initiatives, First Link®, connects people affected by dementia with information, Society support services and programs such as Minds in Motion®, and dementia education sessions at any stage of the journey. Chase area residents can find out about upcoming education sessions by contacting Leanne Hildebrand at 250377-8200 (toll-free 1-800-886-6946) or thildebrand@alzheimerbc.org, and visiting www.alzheimerbc.org.
Canned Salmon Delivery to Food Banks Just before Christmas, the Kamloops and District Labour Council has doubled it’s delivery of canned salmon to area food banks from previous years thanks to an even bigger commitment by the affiliates. In total, 144 cases of salmon will be delivered to food banks in Kamloops, Merritt, Chase, Barrier and Clearwater. Once again the KDLC has participated in the Protein for People program, a BC non-profit society initiated in 2006 and led by labour organizations. By sourcing quality protein from unionized food producers
and purchasing in volume, the society is able to maximize purchasing power to feed tens of thousands of people. Due to the high cost of protein based foods, food banks spend most of their financial donations on protein and regularly experience shortages of this key nutrient. “With so many children living in poverty in our province, one in five to be exact, we wanted to help ensure their immediate needs for developmental nourishment is addressed,” says KDLC President Barb Nederpel.

MOSTAT – THE DEVELOPMENT OF A WINNER by Scott Koch
Junior Hockey has a cut off date of January 10th each Hockey season where trades, releases and acquisitions all come to a stop. In the KIJHL each Franchise is allowed to have a maximum of 23 carded players, including 2 goaltenders on it’s roster. As the 10th came to Heatville little was expected to change. The roster was pretty much set as some tinkering of parts had taken place earlier. Then the phone rang…it was the Surrey Eagles of the BCHL (Junior A) and they were looking for that one player that could help them. They knew what they wanted… the HEAT leading scorer… Logan Mostat…and they were in a hurry to get him to the West Coast. Within the confines of the Art Holding Memorial Arena it is always the mindset of the Organization to assist Players to reach their full potential and in the process move up to the next level. So, Logan “Stat” Mostat made the decision to head West with the full support of his fellow players and the HEAT Hockey Club and Society. As the leading scorer Mostat leaves a huge hole in the roster to be filled, and players of his calibre don’t fall into your
lap. So, the other 20 skaters will be expected to do just a little bit more, bear down a bit harder, give an extra percent effort and from that it is expected the next Mostat will rise to the top and get the same great opportunity. On January 6th the HEAT were the guests of the Kamloops Blazers as they took on the Prince George Cougars at the Sandman Centre. Players and
team Staff were very thankful for this true sportsmanlike gesture and the opportunity it presented. Friday Night the 8th saw the game of the year played as the Summerland STEAM stopped in Chase. Two very equal teams in the KIJHL Standings and statistics faced each other. This see-saw battle saw Chase score on 2 of 5 powerplay opportunities while firing 36 shots. The
STEAM opened scoring in the 1st, in the 2nd Travis Beaubien scored the equalizer from Zach Fournier and Austin Willier. Summerland got 2 to end the 2nd. In the 3rd Tommy Brown scored on the man advantage from Braden Hughes and Trevor Okino. Summerland popped one in before Logan Mostat put an exclamation mark on his HEAT career by scoring on an “end to end” rush , on the powerplay from Brown and Hughes. With 53 seconds left, Hughes blasted a cannon for the tie from Kolten Moore and Okino. Then to overtime and Brad Whitehead drills the puck in the net assisted by Brown and Mason Palaga, a 5-4 come from behind win, and the noisy fans went home elated. Saturday night the 9th found the HEAT in Revelstoke facing the Grizzlies. Michael Fidanza in the 1st scored on the man advantage from Hughes and Moore, then the mad Bears tied it up. In the 2nd Alex Durbeniuk scored a sweet one from Spencer Farstad and Fournier. However, in the 3rd, Revelstoke scored 2 unanswered goals to claim a 3-2 come from behind win. The result made for a quiet bus ride home to the shores of Little Shuswap Lake. Next up at Home, are the 100 Mile House WRANGLERS who always take no prisoners, this battle is on Saturday the 16th at 7:00 pm at AHMA.
