Fashioning For A Cure by Cavelle Layes
Chase residents prove that fashion is not just a passing trend within the Village, as the annual Team Chase Fall Tea and Fashion Show went on without a hitch to a sold out crowd. Sept. 25th marked the 12th fall fashion show for the Team Chase committee, and while the event has stood the test of time, it certainly has not lost its charm. “It is very elegant,” Co-organize of event, Diane Endean said. “The actual tea settings are china tea cups and saucers and plates, and the decor is phenomenal very elegant and pretty. It is very much a tea party.” The Fundraiser began as a twice-yearly event, but the Spring fashion show was cut out when the Spring Pink Ribbon Golf Tournament was created. “The golf tournament is in May and we thought it would be too much at once,” Endean explained. The event continued to grow and with the increase in popularity, a change of venue was needed to accommodate the crowd. So the fashion show moved from the curling rink to the Chase Community Hall.
Endean explained that when the event began there wasn’t many retail clothing stores in the area so they went to Kamloops to get their suppliers. However, as options began to form in Chase they made the decision to showcase local stores and have ever since. “We wanted to make it where people can go in a local store, and find clothes and say, ‘I seen that at the fashion show’,” Endean said. This year Chum ‘N’ Luba’s and Pebbles Place were the two stores who supplied Continued on Page 6 ....

By Cavelle Layes Tourism in Chase has seen a decrease this year, however, despite the rainy weather the Chase Visitor Information Centre still seen about 30 visitors a day. Chase Visitor Information Centre manager, Brenda Murray, said she was expecting more and hopes to see a boost next year, noting that many of those who did travel to the area were from British Columbia. “We had many who were driving through and saw the lake and followed it around and found Chase,” Murray said. “ Most who came loved it.” The Visitor Information Centre did not see many tourists from the U.S. this year, despite the dollar. While July and August are the peak times for tourism in Chase, Murray said she did get a number of people earlier in the season who were interested in mov-
ing to Chase, as well as others looking to invest in the area. Golf Cart Petition
By Cavelle Layes A petition to bring the Golf Cart project to a referendum has hit the counters of stores throughout the community. Brian Waterston did not believe he was the only one upset by how the golf cart project was launched in Chase, and after a short look online, he discovered there were many others who felt the same. “After posting a comment on Facebook, I realized how many in the village were opposed to the idea,” Waterston said. “I’ve been watching council decisions be implemented in Chase for quite some time, without getting proper support from the citizens of Chase and having to reverse these decisions at a later date.” Waterston is not against the project itself, in fact he believes if done right, the golf carts offer a greener alternative to cars and trucks, and another option for those who might not be able to afford vehicle. He does not agree, however, with the lack of public input before the project was agreed to. “To me, this was just another one of those decisions that impacted the community, that did not have the official support of its citizens.” The purpose of the petition would not be to stop the prjoect completely, but to allow the community to give feedback on the project as a whole, and ultimately give the community the right to decide whether it stays or goes, Waterston said. He explained the idea behind the petition is “to give the Citizens of Chase their legal right to vote on something that will affect every one of us.” “I would like as many people as possible sign this petition,” Waterston said. “So I can take it to the Village Council and Ministry of Transportation to start a community referendum.” Waterston has dropped the petition off at a number of local stores including The Groceteria, People’s, the Underwood Liquor Store and Chase Jeweller’s , among others. They
will be kept there throughout the month of October. Waterston believes the Village owes the community more information, and even if the referendum was granted, that the Village should be doing more to inform the community. “Prior to this Referendum, we should all be given the details of the proposed program, so we can all walk in to cast an educated vote,” Waterston said. Waterston said he has had mostly positive feedback from the community in regards to his petition. However, whenever the subject was the Golf Cart program, he said he’s recieved has been 99 % negative. Village C.A.O. ,Joni Heinrich, said the Village Council is aware the petition has been circulating and said the councillors and Village staff have been listening to feedback from the community, as well as reading posts on Facebook. In light of the feedback they have received, the Village council has begun to look at other alternatives for the project. “They don’t want the entire project to be scrapped because people are upset over the speed limits,” Heinrich said. “We want to find a solution.” The mayor and councillors were away meeting with the Minister if Transportation, Todd Stone, over the week, as well as the mayor of the other pilot project community, Qulaicum Beach. Heinrich said the feedback from Qualicum Beach residents has been about the same as Chase. “They are getting a lot of pushback from the community,” she said. Heinrich explained that Mayor Rick Berrigan will be speaking with Stone about the possibility of amending the road speed regulations. The councillors have been listening to the concerns of Chase residents and they are seeing what they can do to fix the situation as opposed to scrapping the whole project, she noted.

H i t a n d Ru n C a s e Po s t p o n e d By Cavelle Layes A Shuswap man accused in a hit-andrun accident that took the life of local Chase resident, will be waiting another month before his case is heard in court. Raymond Edward Swann, 55, is facing multiple charges related to an April 3rd motor vehicle accident that took place in Magna Bay, including criminal negligence causing death and failing to stop at an accident. Swann did not appear in court on Sept. 22, and was instead represented by his lawyer, who requested more time to receive and review information from prosecutors. The request was granted, with a court date set for Oct. 24th. The charges stem from an accident earlier this spring. On the morning of April 3rd Brian Watson, a well known husband, father and grandparent in Chase, left his home to enjoy one of the first motorcycle rides of the season. Watson made it to Magna Bay, on the Squilax-Anglemont road, a route he had taken many times before, when he was
struck from behind by a pickup truck. Swann has been accused of being the driver of the truck, which according to police reports, fled the scene, leaving Watson alone. The 60-year-old Kamloops-Thompson school district employee was pronounced dead at the scene. Watson’s wife, Ila Watson had known her husband since she was in grade 1, the two began dating at 15-years-old and got married at 18-years-old. Those close to the family describe Watson as being a loving father, husband, and grandfather and that his death brought a great loss to the community. A Kamloops paint company named a colour after Watson, who was a painter by trade. The paint colour’s name is Bri’s Brown, however, the colour itself is actually more of a grey, the same colour he used to paint the school lockers – a nod to the fact the Watson was colourblind. Swann will appear back in court next month, until then he is currently not in custody.
RCMP Report On September 21st, Chase RCMP received a report of a break-in to a vehicle in the 600 block of Willow St. in Chase. Nothing was stolen, however, the glove-box had been opened and the contents gone through. The owner of the vehicle left it unlocked overnight. On September 24th, at 9:45 pm, RCMP responded to a call of a suspicious circumstance at a residence on Martin Prairie Road in Pritchard. The caller stated she noticed a flashlight beam outside in her front yard. RCMP officers checked the property on foot, and found nothing suspicious. The RCMP reminds residents to ensure all of their outdoor property is properly secured overnight. Alarms and high-resolution video surveillance can also be very effective, particularly on large rural properties. On September 25th, Chase RCMP was notified of a break-in to a Canada Post community mailbox near Des Fosses

the clothing for the fashion show. Endean said normally G Force is a part of the show as well, but they were unable to take part this year. “It is a great way for people to see that G Force has lots to offer. They don’t just have skater clothes or clothes for younger people. Many people don’t realize that.” Endean said the clothing showcased at the fashion show were phenomenal, and match what the local stores stock year round. Both stores showcased this year have beautiful items for everyone, she said, and stock all sizes including plus sizes. This year’s event sold out three days before the fashion show, with a total of 125 tickets being sold, and had about 9 to 10 vendors at the show as well. While the final numbers had not yet been tallied, Endean believes they had raised at least $2000 from the event. While there were many great parts to the night, Endean said the highlight for them has always been the support they get from the community. “We get the easy job of coming together and raising the money, those battling cancer have the hard job,” she said. “We are so grateful how Chase has always supported everything we do and help us raise money for the cause.” The members of Team Chase has already hosted their annual golf tournament this spring, and were able to raise about $5000 to $6000 from the event, which will also be
going towards their final sum to be donated to breast cancer research next month. Team Chase will have one final fundraiser taking place throughout the month of October, which will be the pink jersey fundraiser done in partnership with the Chase Heat. The Heat players will wear pink jerseys at all three of their home games in October. At the end of the month, the jerseys will be auctioned off. Team Chase will be taking part in the Run For A Cure in Kamloops on October 2nd. The team members invite any Chase resident who would like to run with them, to meet them at the bandshell at Riverside park that morning, or by calling Endean ahead of time to get more information. They welcome all ages to walk or run along side them. Endean said the day can be an emotional one for them all. “It is very emotional because there is a lot of survivors that take part,” she said, “At the beginning of the race they have a survivors walk and about three from our group participate in it.” “When you see the number of survivors it is amazing,” Endean said. “It would have been unheard of just a few years ago to have so many surviving. It is very emotional to see how far we have come and to know what you are doing is helping, the research we are helping to fund is doing something.” Team chase has won the family and friends award for 7 years, meaning the group has raised the most money in
their division. “It really speaks well to our community for supporting us,” Endean said. “Our motivation for doing it has always been to support the people who have been diagnosed with cancer by raising money for research and development. I think we can really say it is getting really close to a cure for cancer and it is thanks to fundraisers like what we are doing that keeps researchers going,” she said. “If they find a cure for breast cancer they will find a cure for all cancers.” In the past Team Chase has raised anywhere from $11,0000 to $15,000, and while the group is happy with any dollar amount they raise for the cause, they hope to match their previous years contributions. As of right now, the group has 15 people registered to run for Team Chase, but would like to invite the community of Chase to join them. “The more the merrier,” Endean said, noting there is no age limits for the event. Those who would like to contact Endean about joining the team in a walk or run during Run For A Cure, or would like to donate to the cause can reach her by phoning 250-679-3483 or at 250-5722123. A notice is also issued to the winner of the $100 and $50 gift card door prizes at Chum ‘N’ Luba’s. The winner is asked to get in touch with the store owner Darlene ASAP regarding a 90 day limit on the cards.
ChaseHamperSocietyReceivesMuchNeededSupplies The Chase Food Hamper Society is coming up to its busy season and as a result they are looking to the community for support. The Chase Rotary Fall Food Drive held on Sept 10th was a great help for the Hamper Society. The volunteers came together canvasing Chase and were able to collect approximately 1400 pounds of non perishable food. All donations collected stay in Chase and support the local food bank. Safety Mart Foods along with the Chase Hamper Society will be launching a special coupon book for for the month of Octover as well. The books cost $10 and offer $50 worth of savings. For every coupon book sold 100% of the sales will go to your local food bank. Coupon books can be purchased at Safety Mart and expire on Dec. 31.

By Cavelle Layes
Over 3200 seniors along with their family and friends, made the trip to Coquitlam last weekend to compete in the 29th Annual Seniors Games. The 2016 BC Senior Games consisted of tough competition in over 22 different sports, and oversaw multiple events per category from Sept. 20th to the 24th. Ages of the athletes, who came from almost every community in BC, ranged from 55 to 90-years-old. It took over 1500 volunteers to come together in order to make the game a success, and that they were. Chase Fire Rescue Kept Busy With Calls By Cavelle Layes
Chase Fire Rescue members attended a wide range of calls over the last two months, including downed trees, fires, and motor vehicle inncidents. In August the members responded to five Motor Vehicle Incidents, two public service calls, one interface fire and investigated three burning complaints and one fire alarm. In September the members responded to four Motor Vehicle Incidents and one fire call for hydro lines down. Rescue members were also called out earlier this month after a heavy wind storm, for campers who were stuck in the Neskonlith Campground after trees had fallen blocking the entry and exit routes. Three members attended the scene, however after investigating the issue and discovering more than ten large trees had been uprooted and completely blocking the road, Forestry Services were then called in. No campers had been injured during the incident.
On Sept 1. Chase Rescue also responded to a motor vehicle incident where a pickup truck had rolled down an embankment on the switchbacks towards Neskonlith. The driver of the vehicle, was able to jump out before it rolled down the steep embankment about 100 feet before coming to rest at the bottom. The driver suffered no serious injuries. Chase Road Rescue members responded to a call at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 21, 2016 with reports of a single vehicle roll over with one entrapped along Highway 1 and Martin Prairie Road. A pickup truck with Alberta licence plates had left the highway, veering right off the road and striking an embankment before coming to rest in the ditch. The male driver was pronounced deceased on scene by BCAS members, no one else was involved in the incident. RCMP members are continuing to investigate the incident.
Two members of Chase Rescue responded to a call reporting of a single vehicle rollover Saturday, Sept 24, 2016 at 8 a.m.. Both patients had been removed from the vehicle by Shuswap First Responders when Rescue arrived on scene. Members assessed the scene, determining no further assistance was needed, before returning to the hall. While the highway upgrades have made the main travel routes around Chase safer, Chase Fire Rescue would like to remind drivers to plan ahead and take their time when driving. Wildlife will be wandering on the highways more often during the next few months, and a few seconds of extra breaking time can save your life. Oct. 1st should also have Chase dirvers ensuring they have their winter tires on, even if there is no snow on the ground yet.Keep the roads safe for yourself and fellow drivers, eliminate distracted driving and watch the speed limits.
