The Story How Scotland’s world famous poet, Robert Burns came to be celebrated (in verse) to the memory of their friend and hero. The real link being his poetry with its message of love, freedom and the essential value of humanity. It was such a joyous occasion they agreed to meet the following January for a birthday dinner, little knowing that they invented a global phenomenon that we known as the Burns Supper. His birthday is celebrated throughout the world, with the piping in of the haggis, highland dancing, recitals of some of his poetry, song and dance. Although more than 250 years have passed since his death, Burns remains one of the most celebrated figures in Scottish history and culture.

Robert Burns was born January 25th, 1795 in Alloway, Ayr-shire, Scotland. The son of a poor family, he is more commonly known as Rabbie Burns. He had an exceptional talent for writing poetry and songs, one of which is sung at New Year throughout the world, “Auld Lang Syne”. He died at the age of 37. In 1801 on the 5th Anniversary of the death of Robert Burns, nine men who knew him met for dinner in Burns Cottage in Alloway to celebrate his life and works. The Master of Ceremonies was a local minister and theologian. The evening centered on a haggis: with recitation and singing of Burns’ work and a toast

Mission Trip to Guatemala
by Pat Lepp Once again another group from Pritchard/Chase /Kamloops are going to Guatemala. This time we will help build a school there as our project. A good education is very limited there. With a good education a young person can break the cycle of poverty which usually runs from one generation to the next. We will be building a sturdy school building for the students to go to so they can receive a proper education. As a fundraiser we will be hosting a movie screening, of "Return to the Hiding Place". This movie, which is rated PG 13, is based on the untold story of Corrie ten Booms secret army during the time of Hitler. This event will take place the Pritchard Community Hall at 7:00 on January 23. Admission is by donation with popcorn and drinks available as part of the fundraiser. 2016 is well underway with the second half of School Learn to Curl. This project is subsidized by the Chase and District Curling Club. It was initiated under the direction of our Coaches from the Junior Program with the assistance of club volunteers. Learn to Curl has involved both the Haldane Elementary and the Secondary Schools. Over the course of two months, this project will see over 100 students’ participate in Learn to Curl. Harold James Farquhar (89yrs) of Chase, B.C. passed away at the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Memorial Hospice Home in Kamloops on Jan 13, 2016. He was the third of eleven children to Dorothea and Stanley Farquhar of Hunta, Ont. He married Eileen Reilly in 1952 and later took over the family farm for ten years while raising their four children; Susan, Betty, Colin and Catherine. He moved his family back to BC where he worked at Adam’s Lake Lumber until his retirement. Harold enjoyed many activities of which Eileen was his constant companion. The Shuswap area was perfect for golf, fishing, camping, boating, gardening and cross-country skiing. He also loved to square dance and travel, especially being Snowbirds during the winter. Meeting new people and spending time with friends and of course family. Visiting, laughing and playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren was so much fun and he was very proud of them all. News from the Bowling Alley by Cayln Buresh, Village Lanes
Hi Guys!! Well, I’m currently writing this column, and it’s Tuesday afternoon, and guess what! Still no baby! Maybe by the time you’re all sitting down having a read, it will be a different story! Hope you all had a fantastic week! It has been another fun filled week on the lanes, as per usual! This past Sunday we hosted the Hawaiian Pick-A-Partner Zone Finals! Let me explain just a little bit about this tournament so that we are all on the same page! Essentially, the idea is to pick a partner that you would like to bowl with, and it costs each person only $5.00 to enter. Of all of the entries that we had, we got to send 1 in every five entries to the zone finals. We were lucky enough to have 57 teams from Chase alone enter into this event, so 114 people! On Sunday, the zone finals
were held, and the top 11 of the 57 teams entered got to participate! At the zone finals, partners, Terry Vandevosse and Red Manson as well as partners Terry Berreth and Ray Jackson placed 1st and 2nd, and will now advance on to the Provincial Finals that will be held February 20th in Port Coquitlam! If either of these teams are to place first at the Provincial Finals, they will have their choice between a trip for 4 people to Hawaii or $1500.00 cash each! GO CHASE GO! If any of you win the trip to Hawaii and don’t have anyone to go with, this new mama will be ready for vacation I’m sure, just throwing that out there! Until next time readers, have a wonderful week, and I hope that next week I’ll be able to tell you all about our new bundle of joy! Cheers!

Student of the Month submitted by Phil Arkinstall
December Junior Student: Inez Hegelstad
This month’s Junior Student of the Month is Inez Hegelstad. Inez has been an exemplary student all year. Her teachers all agree that she works hard in all of her classes, seeks feedback, and continually strives to do, and be, better. She is willing to give anything a try, and never gets down on herself, even when the task is particularly challenging. What really stands out about Inez though, is what a kind and caring individual she is. She is considerate others, and truly makes an effort to make those around her feel valued. This positive attitude makes her a role model among her peers, and a true asset to CSS.
December Senior Student: Alicia Badesso
This month’s Senior Student of the Month is Alicia Badesso. Beyond her heavy course load, Alicia currently represents CSS on the basketball team, and as a member of the grad executive committee. What has really stood out about Alicia though has been her ability to be a role model to the younger students of CSS. She is kind to the grade 8’s that she TA’s, but not afraid to take on a leadership role and be the authority figure when needed and appropriate. All in all, Alicia is hard working, intuitive, respectful, and mature. She exhibits the qualities of a grade 12 student that CSS will be proud to send off on her future endeavours beyond graduation.

WALKING FOX LIKE IN THE COACH’S FOOTSTEPS
T
by Scott Koch
he past week of hockey saw the HEAT play two inter- division games, win 1 on the road and then lose at home. It’s a story that is repeating itself, and we will get to the recaps, but first some observations that result in a somewhat twisted take on the day to day life of Head Coach Brad “Foxy” Fox. First off for those not aware, last June the Head Guy, after 6 years finally took a couple of weeks off, and went to the Maritimes to meet his main squeezes family. He takes his responsibilities seriously and tends to work 6-7 days a week year round. Up early, and back and forth to the rink all day long, doing what it takes in a small market to put a competitive team on the ice. He walks a lot and knows to the minute how far it is between here and there throughout the Village he calls home. His phone and computer are either his best friends or worst enemies dependent on who and what pops up. It rattles and hums 24/7, the Assistant Coach in Elbow Itch Manitoba has the perfect kid for the bottom 6 that they are releasing. Send him C.O.D. and we will give him a go. The Manager from Salt Lick Saskatchewan wants the best of our best and he needs him yesterday. Dad X and Mom Y call separately ranting about their protegy not getting any ice time and then being cut. The Coach from OopsOops halfway through a trade stops answering his phone and the computer
flashs a message that the kid was sent to the Bafflegab Island Landlubbers! The machine he toils on has at any one time 23 operational and sometimes moving parts (young hockey players!). Those parts are 16-20 years old and come with attachments (parents, girlfriends, outside activities, education needs) and none of them with Operating Manuals. They have all been put together at different factories, some parts are newer then others but all of them come used to one degree or another. They are somewhat interchangeable and so Foxy tinkers to find the right combination that solves the task at hand (think Rubik’s Cube). Testing (practice) is next, adjustments are made (yoga, physio, dryland), and then the product is presented to the public (game). Dedication to his craft is what “Foxy” does so that fans, family and the Community can enjoy some quality entertainment. ICE TIME: So Friday the 15th the HEAT were in Sicamous. Daniel Toews in net stopped 24 of 27 shots to lead his team to a 5-3 victory. His supporting cast saw Michael Howlett and Kolten Moore both score a pair, with youngster Josh Bourne getting the 5th. On Saturday the 16th at the Art Holding Memorial Arena the HEAT dropped a 2-1 contest to the 100 Mile House WRANGLERS. Zach Fournier got the lone tally and Nic Bruyere stopped 23 of 25 fired his way. Chase remains 3rd in the Division and are guaranteed a spot in the playoffs. Next up is a road warrior weekend versus the highly skilled Osoyoos Coyotes and the Summerland Steam.
