out of the area, started the committee about 8 years ago. “The Tier family spearheaded the whole initial fundraising push, and got everything going,” said Marie Vogel. Vogel, who owns G-Force Board Shop in town, has been involved since then and has seen many, many waves of young people passionate about the skate park, who eventually graduate and move on from town. This lack of continuity has been a challenge, but there are again some very committed teenagers working on the project. Cont’d on page 5...

Members needed to make skate park happen
hen you think of skateboarding what words come to mind? Fast? Energetic? Speedy? The road leading to the construction of skate park in Chase has been anything but zippy. It’s been a slow, arduous process; with a decade of fundraising nearly $250,000 is still required to make the skate park a skateable realty. 10 years ago a couple of teenagers Zack Nontell and Tim Lange started up a petition collecting names in support of having a skate park. “We walked around town for an entire summer, collecting names in support of having a skatepark in the community,” said Lange. Pin Chatter: News from the Bowling Alley by Cayln Buresh, Village Lanes
Where to begin! It’s been a busy week everyone! We hosted two tournaments this past weekend at Village Lanes, and man oh man, what a great turnout! We had a full house all weekend long, and couldn’t be happier about it! On Saturday evening we hosted our 3rd Annual Scotch Doubles tournament. Teams came from Vernon, Kamloops, Salmon Arm and Chase for a night of fun! Congratulations to Kelly Collins and Bill Pacholok on their Scratch side victory, they each walked away with $150.00. On the Handicap side of things, Mike Cron and Dale Brush placed first, and took some cash home with them to Kamloops! Good bowling guys! Sunday morning we had a 4 game, 4 player team tournament. Placing first was a team comprised of people who had never met! Talk about good chemistry!
Congratulations to Violet and Reuben Nancekivell, Ronnie Jules, and Stu Ryan on their 1st place victory! Thank you to ALL of the bowlers who came out and participated in both events. The more the merrier, and we wouldn’t enjoy our jobs as much as we do if it weren’t for all of you! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! Our next event will be a Grey Cup Tournament, to be held on Grey Cup Sunday (November 29th). Kelly will be cooking up his famous chili, foot-long hotdogs will be featured on the menu at the lanes, and the game will be on! Whether you come and bowl in the tournament or not, be sure to come and join us for the game! Owners, Gord and Linda are officially on holidays and have headed down to Palm Springs until early December, we are wishing them a great vacation! Until next time readers, cheers!

Zoning Change
The slight change will allow the land owners to operate an enclosed storage unit as well as an RV storage site and build a residential home which the owners intend to live in. The information regarding the rezoning appeared in the Sunflower for a number of weeks, however some community residents are concerned that the information on what type of business could be potentially moving in was not readily available. Joni Heinrich, Village CEO, also noted that notices were sent out to owners of adjacent properties, and the owners of the 343 Shuswap Ave property were asked by council to display signage on the front of the property notifying residents of what they were planning. Chase currently has three storage unit businesses in the area, all locally owned,
and none which are filled to capacity. Some local business owners are concerned about the impact that adding a fourth business to the mix could have. While the Village will hear concerns at the public hearing, complaints regarding business competition will not necessarily be enough to stop the rezoning, Heinrich explained saying that it isn’t an area council typically is responsible of controlling. Issues the Village Council will look at more closely are the esthetics impact having a storage unit on a main street in and out of Chase, and whether it will change traffic patterns in the area. Anyone who feels that the rezoning of the land could potentially impact their interest in property will have the chance to speak at the public hearing being held at the Village Office.

Fierce Invalids Home from Hot Climates by Tom Robbins
It’s rare, but possible, to think of an author as brilliant and have trouble finishing his books. For me Tom Robbins is one such author, whose protagonists are constantly coming up with intelligent quips and apt metaphors. His sentences are long and the stories Robbins comes up with are always provocative beyond reality, but they include enough interesting bits of the world to keep a reader intrigued. Like the St Pachomius convent in Fierce Invalids, where nuns in the Syrian desert promote birth control
against decrees from the Vatican. While I’m having trouble finishing this book, I would recommend others by the same author including Still Life with Woodpecker and Another R o a d s i d e Attraction. Just be warned that your beliefs, religious and otherwise, may be challenged.

Skate Park has been Slow Process
Michael Davis, 16, is a member of the committee because he sees the importance of a safe, accessible space for him and his peers, where they won’t be dodging cars or pedestrians. “A skate park would be good for the community because it would keep kids off the roads and give them a place to be and something to do without getting in trouble”, said Davis. One hurdle that was leapt this year was getting the official, approved skate park plans specific to the future site (where the outdoor rink was on Pine Street which was donated by the Village of Chase). The plans and model were created by Spectrum Skateparks Inc, a world leader in skate park design and construction. These plans, along with a proposal package complete with geographical tests and ground work, cost around $10,000. This important step was funded in large part by changed dropped in donation cans that were located around town at the time. With the help of Community
Liason for the Village of Chase, Terri Mindel Stewart, the skate park committee finally became official, just recently forming a registered society. This gives the project the ability to apply for grants and offer tax receipts for donations. The project still has a long way to go, and the committee is looking for help now. Folks with some extra time to donate and an internet connection would invaluable in researching grants and applying for funding opportunities. The committee will also be circulating letters this winter seeking donations, monetary or in-kind materials. People of all ages are welcome to join the committee, but the youth of Chase would be appreciated in advising, guiding and inspiring both the group and the community at large. The committee is currently meeting on the first Monday of every month. Please contact President Chandra Leduc for more information at ChaseSkatePark@gmail.com or through at facebook.com/ ChaseSkatePark.

Urgent community support is needed for a Re-Zoning meeting at the village office on Nov 3rd at 4:00. This Re-zoning issue is for the land beside the old loft restaurant. It has already been leveled & prepped for an industrial type business on a prime real estate lot that is currently not zoned for the business up for approval. This Business proposal is for a storage facility type business. Besides that there is storage options all around our area already, to re-zone for another
one down the main drag does not help the community. Real estate & land for opportunity in Chase is already scarce and to take a prime piece of land, which was originally intended to help expand the downtown sector, to re-zone this parcel for a storage facility type business is not at all beneficial to our community or it’s people. Please attend the meeting whichever view you have towards the project and it’s location. Marie Vogel

Land Cruising the East Kootenays on SS HEAT by Scott Koch
The following is an excerpt from the pending non existent non fiction literary gem “Chunky Monkey and the Lads”… Friday morning the 23rd of October, its early…way too early, but the Chunky one is up and at em for what won’t be the experience of a lifetime. It’s 6:15 am and he drags his mini suitcase with his favourite pillow towards the rink for a 7:00 am departure. Land Skipper Marc has the Canada West Highway Monster all fired up and sleepy headed jocks stumble from vehicles to their next place of slumber with pillows and blankets in tow. Lars “Mother” Pittendreigh is directing traffic now, as the dozy ones gather sticks and equipment for the three game soiree in the Kootenays. Jason “Lanny” Lans the equipment guru attempts to remember to pack everything, knowing in the back of his mind, something will be left behind, hopefully not one of the kids. Somehow everyone gets on board with their “stuff ” and gets settled in for the pending first of the day sermon from the front. Head Coach Brad “Foxy” Fox climbs on the Coach and takes his place front row right. He checks some notes written the sleepless night before, gets up and
barks “Listen Up….”. Each and every time during the weekend the same two words grab the attention of all 28 passengers aboard the SS Heat. 56 eyes pay attention as 56 ears don’t listen as the day’s activities are laid out. The seating order is part of team protocol, staff up front, then rookies and the vets at the back. For the players it is a rite of passage, privilege and status to get to the back. Off we go, for the 7 hours of semi consciousness interrupted by a quick stop at “Tim’s” in Golden. Our home for this venture is the Model A Motel in Cranbrook and meals are bacon and eggs, pasta and pizza, with burgers in the middle as a post game break from the norm. Friday night is potentially “Fight Night in Fernie” as we meet up with the GHOSTRIDERS, but no fisticuffs arise. The locals take this one 4-3 as the HEAT never get out of 2nd gear. Zach Fournier scores on the powerplay in the 1st from Travis Beaubien and Alex Durbeniuk, zip in the 2nd ,and in the 3rd, Fournier again from Durbeniuk and Logan Mostat and then Kolten Moore from Fournier and Beaubien. Saturday the 24th arrives and everyone kicks around “Cranberry Junction” It’d be SCARY to miss this one! Country living at it’s very for the day before best!! This one-of-a-kind 2 acre, 3 bdrm /3 bath home hopping on the SS with in-law suite not only has the privacy of country living on the edge of town, it also boasts an incredible HEAT for a Saturday income potential that you will rarely, if ever find! Creston with the THUNDERCATS. The only scoring in the 1st Mostat from Grady Musgrave and Michael Fidanza, in the 2nd a pair from Creston, and in the 3rd Spencer Farstad unassisted and then Farstad again from Cale Marchuk and Trevor Okino. Two overtimes later and a 3-3 tie is the result. Two talented teams leave it all on the ice, including 16 year old Nolan Parr dropping the mitts against an older opponent and winning the decision in his first bout. Sunday afternoon on the way home we stop in Kimberley to take on the KIJHL League Champion DYNAMITERS in their classic retro nostalgic barn. The class of the circuit they let us play equals with them through the 1st where they get 1. In the 2nd we get 1, but unfortunately they get 5…and game over. Except there was another period for them to add to the insult and after 2 more they walk with a 8-1 victory. The abandoned goaltenders Daniel Toews and Nic Bruyere saw lots of unwanted action over the three games as they watched their goals against balloon. So back on the bus and off home we travel past elk, deer, mountain sheep and crazy drivers, living for another day to potentially tell another tale of bang and crash, slash and whack, twists and turns on and off the ice. All in all a single point but more importantly lost in it all, a huge bonding opportunity where friendships were made for life.
