Opinions Abound At Public Hearing by Kelsey Snelgrove

R

esidents crammed into Council Chambers for the Public Hearing regarding the zoning amendment to 343 Shuswap Avenue, in Chase (the empty lot beside what was previously The Loft restaurant). The property is already zoned Commercial C-3 which has a long list of permitted uses including “warehouse, mobile home sales and storage”, “automobile, boat, trailer and recreation vehicle showroom and sales”, “automobile repair shop, paint shop, body shop”, “warehouse”, “office, storage building and yard for trade

contractor”, “vehicle storage yards” and “small-scale manufacturing”. The proposed amendment would add the following permitted uses to the site specifically, “Enclosed self storage & recreational vehicle storage” & “Single family dwelling”. Concerns from citizens and business owners at the meeting were focused mainly on aesthetics, ethics and economics. The description of the site plan from the potential proprietors says they are “committed to look professional and inviting”. Continued on page 3

HALDANE HISTORY By Dick Hermann, Chase Museum

The records at the Chase Museum contain many references to the Haldane family, which obviously made a significant contribution to the early development of the town of Chase and the surrounding area. I had a personal early contact with a Haldane in the Bridge River Valley that has had an effect on my entire life. I was too young to remember the event, but my mother told the story so many times that it now seems to come from my own memory. I was born in 1927 in the Bridge River Valley (about 150 miles west of Chase, as the crow flies), when my father was there working for the BC Electric Company on the construction of the original Bridge River hydroelectric power development. In 1930 my brother was born and was christened John Kirsten Hermann. Not long after he was born my mother and father took us to introduce my brother to neighbouring (a few miles away) friends whose name was Haldane. When my mother introduced my brother as John,

I am told the immediate response, in a wonderful Scottish accent, was “Ah, so it’s Jock is it!” And for the rest of his life my brother was known as Jock, and the rest of our family has enjoyed the contribution of the Haldanes. I have not been able to find anything in the Chase Museum records that supports the fact that there were Haldanes in the Bridge River, and I wonder if there is a Haldane around that can help fill in the background. On another matter, the Chase Museum needs to strengthen its list of members, because a strong membership is very important to its success. Watch for us soon in the Post Office and at the hockey game, and please renew your memberships, or take out new memberships, when the opportunity is presented, in order to support the activities of the Museum and the contribution it makes to life in Chase. Memberships are $10 per year for a single membership and $15 per year for a family.

Public Hearing Commentary

Despite this, some were worried the yard would become “unsightly” and could even deter homebuying in town. Others brought up the question of fairness claiming that similar businesses were previously relegated to industrial zones with higher taxation rates and less visible locations. “All anyone wants is a level playing field,” emphasized Gary Lanoue. Guy Spencer, argued this development would go against the vision in Chase’s Official Community Plan.

“To deviate from the OCP isn’t in our best interest. Why spend a bunch of money on a plan and then not give it full consideration?” questioned Spencer. Some arguments in favour of the amendments were that with the current C3 zoning, it could be much worse in terms of environmental impact and unsightly operations. The topic will be on the agenda at the next council meeting on Tuesday, November 10th, but a decision could be deferred to a later date.

The Great Canadian Smoke Alarm Test

Churchill’s Corner by Wally Churchill

The day the music froze. Lest we forget. I remember on Remembrance Day in the late fifties, I was a member of the Rocky Mountain Rangers Regimental Band. It was a very cold day. It was decided that we would not play our instruments, we were to be strictly a marching band. But the Elks Band were diligently warming up their instruments on the radiators. As we marched from the Legion, The Elks band started playing. The drums started out loud and clear, within half a block all could hear was the pah-tuk-a-tuk of the frozen skin. The clarinets went

next with a chill-induced high squeel. Then the trumpets quit working. It was hilarious. Probably the only time in my life I would hear the sound of music freezing. The Loonie Toonies (Reverand Bob and I) will be back in action at the COP Coffee House on Nov 13th. Then again on Dec 12th for the Christmas Hootenany. Keep happy with the happy gang. Keep healthy, start your day with a bang. Keep happy and healthy, the heck with being wealthy. The last Wallbanger, Sir Walter Churchill, Esq

Make sure you have a smoke alarm on every storey, including the basement, and outside all sleeping areas or inside bedrooms if you sleep with doors closed. Check all smoke alarm expiry dates. If it is more than 10 years old, or the year it was made cannot be identified, replace the alarm. Press the Test Button on each smoke alarm. If it sounds, it confirms power is present and circuits are operating. For added protection, follow the same steps for carbon monoxide alarms.

10 QUESTIONS with.... conducted by Cavelle Layes Each week we talk to someone from Chase. We are still on the Fire Department theme, because they are all unique humans with their own perspectives. Here is Maria Beaurain, a member of the Chase Volunteer Fire Department.

Q • Where did you move to Chase from? A • We immigrated from South Africa in 2008 Q • Why did you join the fire department? A • I have always wanted to be a fire fighter. It's interesting and exciting. The fire department plays a vital role in a town and it feels good to be part of that. And best of all, I get to drive a fire truck. Q • How long have you been with the fire department? A • I joined in 2010 Q • What has the fire department taught you? A • What it is to be a volunteer, something that was unknown to me. I admire all volunteers because it takes a lot of dedication Q • What do you like to do in your free time? A • Spending time with my grandchildren Q • What is one of your hidden talents? A • I don't think I have hidden talents but I do surprise myself every now and then with the things I do

Q • What is your favourite part of living in a rural area like Chase? A • I came from a big city and didn't like it. I enjoy the more relaxed atmosphere of a small town and Chase is on the lake, so it is an extra bonus Q • What would you like to see offered in Chase that currently is not? A • I would like a water park for the kids down at the beach. Q • When you are not working, where might you be found? A • Either at Zumba, the fire department, the gym or with my family Q • You instruct weekly Zumba classes, what do you enjoy most about them? A • I have awesome ladies who support me in reaching my goal. All the money from the Zumba classes goes toward equipment for the fire department. At the moment I am collecting money for lift bags for our rescue truck. Q • Who do you consider to be your hero? A • My dad. He was the most honest and hard working person and loved his family so much

Another stop sign? I dont feel a 4 way stop at Pine and 3rd will quite do the trick. Most of the speeding traffic is coming off the bridge, I know as I can hear people ripping down the hill and I live on Pine. How about installing some big speed bumps? They are usually in school or park zones. In my opinion, they should be placed right after the bridge on Pine and right before the park zone, just after 3rd street. A stop sign is too easy to blow right through, got to make them slow down and big speed bumps are waaaay more annoying than a stop sign. Thank You, Natalie Jones Rushworth

Two Game Home Stand Gets a Big Two Points A weekend after having weathered a 3 games in 3 days East Kootenay road trip, and notching but a single point, the Chase HEAT were happy to be back in the friendly confines of the Art Holding Memorial Arena. All Hallows Eve saw the locals matched up versus their division foes the Revelstoke GRIZZLIES. With season ticket holders either handing out candy treats or treat or tricking themselves, a smaller than usual crowd took in a barn burner of a contest. In the 1st Revelstoke gets on the board, in the 2nd Chase, Kolten Moore from Travis Beaubien and Spencer Farstad. So things are all tied up going into the 3rd where the HEAT get one from Moore again assisted by Alex Durbeniuk. But with 58 seconds left the GRIZZLIES get the equalizer on the powerplay due to a
