THE GAMES THAT AREN’T PLAYED by Scott Koch Happy New Year – 2022 to you all! It’s off to quite the start as the local folks hanging around Heatville are finding out. The HEAT have played the least amount of regular season contests in the KIJHL, 24 to be exact. It’s a 44 game race to the 2nd season, the playoffs and 20 games will have to be done and in the books by mid February. Possible of course but you can probably throw out the current schedule as the jugglers at the League office are going to be throwing a lot of pucks in the air. Towards the end of 2021 the devastation of the provincial flooding saw two games versus Kamloops and Princeton postponed. Prior to News Years Eve two contests versus 100 Mile House were postponed due to severe weather concerns. This past weekend two games versus Revelstoke and Sicamous were postponed due to Omicron concerns. Inspite of everything being thrown at the Heat, players are on the mend and YOUR team will be back in business very soon. Chase isn’t the only team being impacted as postponements are occurring in all four corners and inbetween throughout the league. Stay

tuned for schedule updates. On to some brighter news as Trevor Kennedy is returning to the Heat from Junior A in Saskatchewan. The big strapping power forward’s return is a huge acquisition for the local team and it’s fans. Kennedy got off to a tough start this season as an off season broken ankle put him 8 weeks behind, and by the time he got to the prairie province it was difficult to crack the lineup on a regular basis. A bit of good luck locally and while Kennedy may be a bit disappointed the points that are going to come will certainly cheer him up. We suggest he is worth the price of admission, check it out. The Summerland Steam will be coming out of the Okanagan to face the Heat this Saturday the 15th at 7:00 pm. The Art Holding Memorial Arena has plenty of space for you and the kids, so plan to attend a contest that features two teams that entered the KIJHL at the same time. If you like steamy hot action on ice, it’s the place to be, toot toot!

Obituary: Otto Hermann Bohl April 14, 1931 – January 11, 2022 Otto passed away peacefully in his home in Chase, BC. Otto was born in Bremen, Germany, and came to Canada alone at age 20, settling in Manitoba and then Prince Rupert where he met his wife, Eva, raised their family, and ran his own painting business. In 1980, Otto, Eva and George moved to Chase where Otto and George operated their father and son Bohl’s Painting business. Otto was a talented artist and musician, and in his younger years an outdoorsman and fisherman. He was a loving and caring husband, brother, father, grandfather and great grandfather, friend to many, and a fixture in his community. He will be dearly missed by those fortunate enough to have known him. Otto is predeceased by five siblings and his sons Gary and Harold, and survived by his loving wife of 65 years of marriage, Eva, siblings Karl (Edeltraut) and Waltraut (in Germany), children Ruth (Mark) and George, grandchildren Jeremy, Jonathan (Tanya) and Justin (Ruth F), great grandchildren Konrad and Kira, and nieces and nephews.

Housing Co-op in Chase submitted by Don Cavers

The lack of affordable housing has led some people to explore options to create more affordable options. A NonProfit CO-OP is one of those models being explored for Chase. Unlike a rental complex the CO-OP project belongs to the members who elect a board and share in the decision making and day to day operations. Many of the details of membership are defined by the members themselves but most involve a certain commitment to devote an amount of time each month to help maintain the CO-OP. That can mean anything from convening social events to cutting grass or, lately, shoveling snow. In return members enjoy stable, predictable, lower monthly costs than if they were in the

rental market. Costs reflect the actual costs of building and maintaining the CO-OP, not the vagaries of the real estate market. Members have designated units and pay usage fees but own a voting share in the overall complex, not any particular unit. This means members qualify for Homeowners’ tax grants which lowers the overall property tax bill. There are also other savings in the non-profit model and a more fundamental sense of community can develop with neighbours helping neighbours. If you are interested in more information please message Don at 250-852-2274 or chasecoophousing@gmail.com
