Scam artists love Facebook because they can reach many potential victims cheaply and quickly. You can help yourself and your family, friends and colleagues by being able to recognize a scam. Here are four of the most common scams. 1. Like-Farming posts claim to award a prize for liking or sharing a page or post. Generally, they offer attractive prizes such as a Range Rover or all-inclusive world-wide trip and aim to get many users signed up. The user information is sold or the survey scams are sent out and the scammers get paid by further user interaction. Legitimate companies do offer prizes, but extravagant prizes like vehicles or luxury vacations are usually false. What to watch out for: Check if the page has a verified icon beside its name. All large companies will have an official page. Scroll down the page to see how long it has been active for. If it is a newly created page, it is likely false. Check for spelling mistakes, or additional punctuation, in the name. 2. Cloning is when someone recreates a person’s profile using publicly available pictures and information. Friend requests are then sent out which people unknowingly accept. The fake account is then used for further spam and lottery scams. It is important to note that cloning is NOT hacking. Scammers are just using what is publicly available. What you can do: If you think a friends account has been cloned, notify them to alert Facebook and have the false profile removed.

Wanted: A few interested persons to attend the Village of Chase 2017 Budget discussions on Monday, January 30th. You needn’t be a financial wizard - just someone who might be concerned at the prospects of our having an accumulated deficit of $1.9 Million in 5 years. Or did you already know that this year (2017) we are forecast to have a cost deficit of $31,600.00 unless there are radical changes? This budget meeting isn’t a matter of apportioning blame - it’s simply an opportunity for you to hear Keep Carts on the Course Why would the provincial government waste our money on making signs to put up for golf carts to roam the streets of Chase and Qualicum Beach when there is a lot more important issues that need to be addressed such as homelessness . We seem to have money for unnecessary idiotic projects to amuse the provincial cabinet with instead of dealing with real problems in BC. We as motorists have enough to watch out for as drivers in the town of Chase with out adding more unnecessary traffic on the narrow streets
and understand why there is a need to significantly increase our taxes or to make some drastic changes in the way we do business. The Financial Officer and our Council will engage in serious discussions in this open forum, in an effort to forestall a deficit budget this year . Wouldn’t it make more sense to be there on January 30th for an hour of so, and later the opportunity to provide some posit input than to sit at home uninformed and critical right until our 2017 mill rate is announced? Len McLean, Chase BC of Chase when there is a lot of tourist darting in and out from between parked cars. Please keep the Golf Carts on the golf course that is what they were designed for , and put the money to a better uses. such as senior care, low income housing , housing for homeless people, I think this is way more important than spending money on a bunch of signs to tell motorists to slow down to 30 km to pass a Golf Cart on the street. If this goes ahead I think someone will get hurt or killed for another stupid idea. Terry Hudson

From the RCMP Report Submitted by RCMP Chase Detachment
On December 24th, at 5:00 am, Chase RCMP responded to a complaint of a white commercial Ford F350 flat-deck truck stuck in the ditch on Caen Road in Sorrento. Upon arrival, officers found the passenger side door open and the truck running, in gear, and the rear wheels spinning. No one associated to the truck was present. The ignition had been punched-out and checks showed that the vehicle had been stolen. The truck was confirmed to have been stolen from a Salmon Arm business. Anyone with knowledge of this theft is requested to call Chase Detachment at 250-6793221 or Crimestoppers. On December 24th, at 8:00 am, Chase RCMP responded to a complaint of a stolen 1995 Dodge Ram 1500 pick-up truck from the 1300 block of Henstridge Road in Sorrento. The registered owner stated the truck had been unlocked in his driveway overnight. Two sets of footprints were located in the snow, and vehicle tracks in the neighbour’s driveway suggested that a second vehicle had been involved in the theft. Approximately forty minutes later, the truck was located one kilometre away with the driver’s side window smashed and the ignition punched. Anyone with knowledge of this theft is requested to call Chase Detachment at 250-679-3221 or Crimestoppers. On December 27th, at 3:00 pm, Chase RCMP attended a single vehicle collision on Hwy 1 at the intersection of Silvery Beach Road near Chase. Upon arrival, officers found a Toyota Echo lodged against a power pole. The 36 year old female driver told officers that she had been driving westbound when her 40 year old boyfriend suddenly pulled on the steering wheel, causing the vehicle to leave the roadway and travel down an embankment into a power pole. Both occupants were transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and the man is facing charges. Alcohol was a factor in the collision.
On January 11th, Chase Detachment assisted Kamloops Southeast District Traffic Services with an arrest and drug seizure from a vehicle on Hwy 1 near Chase. The Traffic Services officer stopped a vehicle and during the course of the stop he became aware of cannabis in the vehicle. The thirty-one year old male driver from Regina, Saskatchewan, who was alone, was placed under arrest for possession for the purpose of trafficking under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. A large quantity of marijuana was seized from the vehicle, and the male is facing charges. On January 17th, Chase RCMP were called to a suspicious occurrence on Chase-Falkland Road. The complainant showed police to a set of tire tracks that went off-road near the old dumpsite, and stated that under the snow there appeared to be some fur. A murder of crows was busy picking at the object. Closer inspection revealed that the fur was the hide of a black bear. It is not known how long the hide had been lying there or who was responsible for dumping it. Anyone with information about this circumstance is asked to call Chase RCMP at 250-6793221 or Crimestoppers. On January 24th, Joshua Timothy Reese, aged 33 years, of Chase, BC, was convicted of one count of possession of a firearm contrary to order, Section 117.01(1) of the Criminal Code. In addition to jail time, Reese received a lifetime prohibition on possessing firearms and other restricted weapons, and a victim surcharge of $200. The conviction related to a search warrant executed by Chase RCMP officers in March 2016 at Reese’s residence in which a loaded customised firearm was located, along with numerous gun parts and ammunition. At the time of the search warrant, Reese was the subject of a mandatory prohibition order which banned him from possessing firearms and other weapons for ten years. Reese has been remanded until his next court appearance on February 7 in regard to theft charges.

Why Chase? Our first summer here also included excellent concerts at Music on the Lake, the purchase and enjoyment of a power boat, tennis at the local courts, the Chase Museum, the Roots ‘n Blues Festival in Salmon Arm, and trips around the area to take in the great scenery, sights and communities. Jaunts to family at the coast, on Vancouver Island, and in Calgary during the fall confirmed that The Move had been a very good thing. Husband James and I have so enjoyed
getting to know neighbours and others in the welcoming Village of Chase—and have been volunteering too—it’s true that you only really own what you give away. Contributing is a good thing and besides, it lets you meet new folk. Finding a talented aesthetician, a skilled hair stylist, and an artisan who is also a proficient seamstress right here in town was simply the icing on the cake! Part two will tell the previously unknown and surprising tale that links me to Chase.
Village of Chase 2017 Budget Submitted by Village of Chase Administration
This following is a summary is from a version of the Director of Financial Services’ budget report at the January 16, 2017 Special Meeting (Budget) of Council. The Village’s annual budget is prepared based upon the prior year’s budget for general operations and therefore the 2017 budget is based on a 1.5% increase for normal operating expenses; a 3% increase for 2017 taxes; and a 2% tax increase from 2018 to 2021. Summary The proposed budget yields a significant cash flow deficit over a five year period in the amount of $1,468,400 of which $528,300 has been financed by drawing down all of our available reserves, leaving a net deficit of $940,100. The general fund will create a $1,097,900 total deficit over five years. This is caused by steady drain by capital projects, vehicle purchases and other projects. We are unable to set aside any reserves for emergencies and capital replacement. The accumulated deficit after five years will be $1,889,100. The water fund is in a deficit position temporarily as our planned utility rate increases to catch up will move us into an annual surplus position in 2020. The
deficit for the five years will be $253,600 and the accumulated balance of the water fund deficit will be $807,900 The waste water fund will temporarily have a deficit as we complete the Sewage Treatment upgrade in 2017 and then revert to a $200,000 plus surplus each year. We are not increasing sewage rates significantly while we increase the water rates to recover that fund to a surplus position. The waste water surplus for the five years will be $411,400 which is financing a portion of the deficit caused by the other two funds. The accumulated surplus of the Waste Water Fund will be $2,511,800 in five years. Total annual deficit is averaging $188,000 per year and after five years the village will be in a cash deficit position of $185,200. The present plans project an accumulated cash deficit position for the entire five years of the plan. The next budget meeting is Monday January 30 at 10:00 a.m. at the Village Office. All meeting are open to the public. Furthermore, any additional requested for information or queries can be directed to Village Administration at 250-679-3238, or via email at chase@ chasebc.ca.

Tribute to Jim Phelps
Jim passed away on the morning of December 22nd at home in bed. I met Jim about 31 years ago as I needed a good labourer to help build the many chimneys in houses being built on the Adams Lake Reserve. I took him with me to the Lilloet Reserve, as far as Revelstoke He was the best worker I ever had. He was better than a brother. A good dad to his kids that he loved very much. He may not have been perfect but then who is. A better friend you can never find. I’m speaking for all those who knew him. He’ll be missed very much. -Walter Marx.

A CLOSE ENCOUNTER WITH BEARS By Scott Koch by Scott Koch, Chase Heat
The local shinny squad the HEAT tangled with the GRIZZLIES from Revelstoke on Tuesday the 17th day of 2017 at the Art Holding Memorial Arena. Nothing is ever routine between these two teams as hacking, whacking, slashing and crashing are four elements of engagement. While this contest was tamer then most the score wasn’t settled until late in the 3rd period. Chase opened scoring with Mason Palaga doing the honours from Ryan Okino and Cory Loring. Then Evan Hughes made it 2-0 from Grady Musgrave and Travis Beaubien. Revelstoke came back with a powerplay marker from David Lenzin before Beaubien closed out the period from Josh Bourne and Okino. After twenty it’s 3-1 homeside. In the 2nd Chase gets a 2nd goal from Beaubien assisted by Bourne and Hughes. Then the GRIZZLIES pot a pair the first from Jordan Rea and the 2nd another powerplay counter this time from Raphael Bassot. The HEAT cap the middle stanza with a goal from Spencer Farstad assisted
THE
by Bourne and Okino. It’s now 5-3 homeside. In the 3rd Revelstoke scores a 3rd powerplay marker from Jon Vandermolen to create a great deal of anxiety. However Bourne with 4 seconds left gets an empty net tally from Beaubien and Farstad, to deliver a 6-4 win. The locals down 6 regulars due to injury and illness saw their remaining veterans bring their A game to ensure the success. Next match was held in Summerland the home of the STEAM on Friday the 20th. A full lineup had no excuses for a mediocre performance resulting in a loss to an apparent equal in the standings. Palaga once again got things started this time on the powerplay from Bourne and Beaubien. Then the STEAM got a pair from Ben Dietrich-Scammel and Josh Pilon on a powerplay. In the 2nd Summerland scored a duo, the 1st from Andrew York and then a powerplay goal from the stick of Riley Pettitt. The HEAT get back in this one on the powerplay as Grady Musgrave
does the deed from Zachary Fournier and Pat Brady. But the Okanagan lads cap the middle period with a goal from Levi Johnson. In the 3rd Chase creeps closer on a goal from Fournier assisted by Jake Delorme and Brady, before Pettitt gets his 2nd for Summerland. Then Bourne gets Chase close again from Michael Fidanza and Loring. With Nic Bruyere pulled for an extra attacker the STEAM put icing on their cake with a short handed empty netter from Jarrett Malchow. This one hurts as the HEAT lose 7-4 to a seldom seen rival. The HEAT are guaranteed a playoff spot and early bird tickets will be available to the first two games. Regular prices apply if you buy before the end of the regular season for those two games. After that the price is $12 for Adults, $10 for Seniors and Students, and $8 for Youths. The Year end Awards Banquet will be on Sunday, February 19th at the ALIB Gym and Conference Centre, tickets available at home games.
