With profound sadness we announce the passing of Rita Ethel Zinck Pozzobon long time resident of Scotch Creek, on December 20th, 2018. Born March 28, 1933 in North Vancouver the eldest child of Karl & Dorothy Zinck, when she was 10 they moved to their farm on the Shuswap. She is survived by her girls Aleta (Ben) Steinbach, Karen Prescott (Owen Boyd), Sharen (Bill) Trouton, Janet (Dale) Mortimer, Velda (Jerry) Prescott, Zena (Randy) Branson, 15 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren. Siblings: Norma Bischoff, Netta DesRosiers, Roger (Marie) Zinck, Loretta Greenough, Tom (Peg) Zinck, brother in law Freedy (Jean) Pozzobon, Lillian Pozzobon, Lloyd McNary. Predeceased by her loving husband of 61 years Mackie (Jay) Pozzobon, parents Karl & Dorothy Zinck, grandson Jaye Prescott, son in law Jim Prescott, brother in laws Fred Bischoff, Tom Greenough & John DesRosiers, Sammy & Marino Pozzobon & sister in laws Maria McNary & Joni Pozzobon, numerous nieces and nephews. A true pioneer, Rita grew up a farm girl on the Shuswap, raising crops, milking cows and clearing land. Crossed the lake on the ferry to attend school to grade 8 in Sorrento then boarded in Salmon Arm to attend high school. In her teens she left home to be a berry picker, nanny, and then camp cook for The Bischoff’s logging crew, while there she looked after a trap line that ran up the Crowfoot. During that time she met her cowboy and future husband Mackie through one of the famous Celista hall dances. They were married in 1953 and set out on a 3 month adventure to see the sights and visit family from BC to Mexico. When they arrived back home in Pinantan they made a living logging & ranching, after baby number five, they left behind the difficult tasks of daily life without modern conveniences and power there, then built a home in Chase where their sixth daughter was born. Because of their growing family they built a larger home on VLA where they raised their family and managed together many successful business ventures. Her background enabled

her to be a resourceful w o m a n in many areas, as an amazing cook, it was nothing for Mackie to show up with unexpected company, where she would effortlessly create a delicious meal from their massive garden, livestock, bees, and fruit trees they tended. She was very generous and enjoyed sharing the bounties of her labour. When their children were grown Rita designed and Mackie built their dream home on her beloved Shuswap Lake, where they loved to host family reunions and special events for family and friends who were important to them. Rita was an exceptionally talented artist; Her love of learning never ceased, she would expand her many talents from an early age to include; painting, drawing, sculpture, piano, embroidery, needlework, crocheting, knitting, sewing (matching outfits for her girls), cake decorating, she drew, planned & designed many houses and later jewellery, writing and self illustrating children’s books, creating many works of art for posterity. Her many talents and style carried through to her children, grand & great grandchildren and passed on to anyone that had a desire to learn. Throughout their married life Rita and Mackie supported their communities and were the driving force of many local organizations. They travelled to many parts of the world, where they enjoyed learning about different cultures and people of all walks of life. She was very organized and accomplished a great deal, connecting family through her genealogy research and love of local history. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the North Shuswap Historical Society, c/o Loretta Greenough 3730 Zinck Rd, Scotch Creek, BC, V0E 1M5 A celebration of life will be held at her home in Scotch Creek, July 1, 2019 at 2:00

Falls don’t discriminate – be prepared for winter Submitted by: Kelly Wilson, Interior Health Quality Consultant, Falls and Injury Prevention

More people fall during our cold, Canadian winter than during any other season. No one is immune to falls, yet the consequences of falls differ markedly across age groups. At 25, you may only injure your dignity; at 45, you may break your wrist; and above 65, you may suffer a serious fracture or head injury. Nevertheless, it takes but a second, and a fall for anyone could mean long-term rehabilitation, permanent disability, or death. When weather gets treacherous, take these steps to keep safe: 1. Shovel your driveway, walks and stairs. This is an obvious one but not to be neglected. It’s also the neighbourly thing to do. Keep an eye out, too, for neighbours who are elderly or who have a disability, and lend a hand if needed. With changes in temperature, a freezethaw cycle can make for extremely icy conditions. Spread salt or sand to reduce the risk of a fall. 2. Wear good footwear. Not all footwear is made equal. Even winter boots differ in the amount of slip resistance they offer. To find ratings on specific footwear, visit the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute’s website, Rate My Treads. Ratings go from zero to three snowflakes, with three snowflakes offering the most grip. However, be cautious with cleats and spikes designed for outdoor icy conditions as they can increase your risk of falls on other indoor surfaces 3. Stay active. This is counterintuitive advice since getting up and getting moving would seem to put you at risk of a fall. Yet a more sedentary lifestyle—more likely in the winter months—leads to muscle loss, which decreases strength and balance. So if walking outdoors is not an option, walk indoors at your local mall, for example, or even in the hallways of your house or apartment building. Swimming at your

Wills & Estate Family Law Conveyancing

local pool is another excellent way to stay limber. Mobility is medicine—take it every day! 4. Helmets, helmets, helmets. Tis the season for skating, skiing, snowboarding, and snowmobiling. For these and other activities, wear a helmet. Helmets look fashionable, keep you warm, and most importantly protect your brain. Adults, set an example for your kids: don a helmet by default. 5.

Be present in your body. Proprioception is our sense of our body’s position in space, including our sense of balance. This sense suffers from the many distractions in our day, not least of which our smart phones. Avoid rushing and “multi-tasking”. Be mindful of where you put your feet and tune in to your surroundings when you are walking.

6. Eat and drink for good health. Eat healthy foods and drink plenty of water—poor nutrition and dehydration can cause dizziness. 7. Mind your medications. Taking more than five medications increases your risk for falling and some medications can make you feel dizzy or drowsy. If you think your medications are making you unsteady, be sure to tell your doctor, nurse practitioner or pharmacist right away. Don’t stop taking your medication without speaking with them first. Lastly, quality of life is key. To partake in the activities we enjoy often entails a level of risk. We cannot completely eliminate risk, but through these steps we can greatly decrease our chances of a fall. May you enjoy the winter season and stay safe! For more information about fall and injury prevention, visit the fall prevention site www.findingbalancebc. ca and the Your Health section at www. interiorhealth.ca.

CHASE HEAT SHOWCASE TALENT

by Scott Koch, Chase Heat The Chase HEAT came back from a break to join 19 other teams in the 1st KIJHL College Showcase in Kamloops. The event happened over three days, December 27th-29th at both Memorial and MacArthur Island Arenas. Each team played two games, a home and away contest. The HEAT kicked things off with a tilt versus the Castlegar REBELS on December 27th. In the 1st Ethan Joe from Marino Bordin and Cody Allen got the party started. In the 2nd Tyson Lampreau increased the lead to two from Russell Hassler and Caleb Biensch. The third saw Chase get a third goal from Brett Alexander assisted by Tyler Collens and Biensch. The end result a 3-0 shutout for the team and goalie Geoff Drought who stopped 23 shots for the win. The next night the 28th, the foes were the Columbia Valley Rockies from Invermere. The HEAT in the building were hot in the 1st, with three goals being scored. Breckin Erichuk from Allen and Bordin started the trio of tallys. The 2nd goal came off the twig of Evan Vinterlik aided by Cam Watson and Gavin Mattey. Brayden Haskell unassisted made it a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes. There was no scoring in the 2nd, but in the 3rd the ROCKIES popped one. This game concluded 3-1 with Drought once again playing stellar goal with 22 of 23 shots stymied. In both contests Drought was selected as the Chase star of the game. The HEAT head to Princeton to face the POSSE on Friday January 4th, 2019 before coming back to the Art Holding Memorial Arena for a Saturday Night the 5th special versus the Osoyoos COYOTES. Guaranteed entertainment for 2019 at the Chaos Castle in Chase.
