Council Highlights - January 12, 2020 Council held a regular meeting virtually via Zoom on Tuesday, January 12, 2021. Two members of the public participated. Council adopted the minutes from the December 22, 2020 Council meeting and then heard from the President and Treasurer of Chabelos Private Members RV Resort regarding their hope for the Village to review the water rates charged to Chabelos, in light of their being occupied only 6 months of the year. Council deferred the matter back to Administration to obtain more information which will come forward to the January 26, 2021 Council meeting for consideration. Council considered a request from the Adams River Salmon Society for a grantin-aid of $2000 to help fund a mobile interpretation trailer. Such a trailer would be used to support educational programming activities undertaken by the Society when they visit elementary and middle schools in the area. In light of the economic spinoff the salmon runs and other Society activities bring to the Village of Chase, Council agreed to provide the Society with a grant of $2000. Council passed a resolution to keep the Community Hall and Seniors Centre closed to activities during the extension of the Public Health Officer’s orders regarding gatherings. That order expires February 5, 2021 at midnight, and the Village will reasses the usage of the Community Hall and the Seniors Centre at that time based on the order either being lifted or extended. Council passed a resolution to disallow any spectators at the Art Holding Memorial Arena based on the current Public Health Order. This issue will also be re-addressed closer to the time of the expiration of the current public health order restricting gatherings. Council discussed the draft Partnering Agreement between the Village and the Recreation Centre Society for the

submitted by Village of Chase management and operation of the Art Holding Memorial Arena. Council requested Administration to set up a meeting with the Recreation Centre Society to discuss any input or concerns they may have so that a new agreement can be approved. Council set Wednesday, January 20, 2021 starting at 5 p.m. for a virtual meeting with the Board members of the Chase and District Chamber of Commerce to discuss the potential for the Village to participate in the Shuswap Economic Development Society. That meeting will be open for public to participate. Council approved the destruction of various archived finance files according to the retention and destruction schedule for the Village of Chase. Council received for information the call for nominations for the Southern Interior Local Government Association (SILGA). Council considered the SILGA 2021 call for resolutions and referred the matter to Administration to provide some input and suggestions to Council. Council considered the call for nominations for the SILGA Community Excellence Awards – more information about past recipients will be shared with Council and the item will be reviewed at a future Council meeting. Council passed a resolution for Administration to apply for Federal Summer Jobs funding to support the Summer Recreation Program if it can proceed based on the levels of Covid-19 cases and public health orders closer to June, 2021. If the program cannot proceed in 2021, and the Village is successful in receiving funds, the Village will attempt to reallocate those grants funds to other programs provided approval is received by the Federal summer jobs program. scheduled for Tuesday, January 26, 2021 starting at 4 p.m. – that meeting will be held virtually and the public is invited to participate. Heat coach Brad Fox cares about developing players submitted Emanuel Sequeira, Director of Communications KIJHL

Brad Fox loves the impact of the relationships he has with players. “I have always been driven by working with kids to see them become stronger people and attain their goals playing a game they love,” says Fox, who is in his 17th season in the KIJHL, and has been with the Heat since they joined the league in 2010-11. After being on a KIJHL bench for 16 years, the number of players he has helped advance is substantial. “I think the more important thing that has come out of that is the fact that looking back, I have been privileged enough to be around those that have come back to be caring, healthy, proactive human beings in society,” says Fox. “That is something that I have taken the most pride in.” Here are some players Fox has helped advance to higher levels: Reece Forman (Heat 2011 - 13 - Nipawin Hawks SJHL - Minot State College); Nick Fidanza (Heat - 2012-13 Merritt Centennials BCHL); Cody Koskimaki (Heat 201314 - Portage College - Koskimaki also played for the Kamloops Storm - 201011 - MJHL); Kurtis Johnson (Heat 201114 - University of Central Oklahoma); Logan Mostat (Heat 2014 - 15 - Salmon Arm Silverbacks BCHL); Trevor Okino (Heat - 2013-16, Jamestown University); Alex Durbeniuk (Heat 2013-16 - Central Oklahoma); Josh Bourne (Heat 2015-17 - Nanaimo Clippers BCHL - Canadian University); Landon Russell (Heat 2016-17 - Dauphin Kings MJHL - USA College); Colton Nikiforuk (Heat - 201 -18 - Nipawin Hawks SJHL) Vince Benedetto (Heat 2019-20 - UNLV) and Gavin Mattey (Heat 2017-20 - La Ronge/SJHL); Dylan Barton (Heat 2019-20 -Red Lake Miners - SIJHL); Kurt Torbohm (Revelstoke - 200607 - Kamloops Blazers WHL); Steve Tresierra (Revelstoke - 2007 - 08 Victoria Grizzlies - BCHL - Queen’s University) and Jeff Jones (Revelstoke - 2008-09 - Merritt Centennials BCHL - Robert Morris University). When he coached at the Junior A level, Fox was fortunate to be part of the career of players that reached NCAA Division 1 and professionally.

Inspiration to be a great coach comes from many avenues for Fox. Everyone in the Heat program, including the community, inspires him to “achieve great things.” The Heat program is driven by its great, small community and Fox says there are many people who have impacted the players that have worn the jersey. The Heat pride themselves on giving the players the resources to grow and make mistakes and learn to push forward. Players feel privileged to be a part of the Heat because of how they feel welcome. “That in turn becomes a really attractive thing to a player and a parent when they look at a program,” says Fox, who began coaching in the KIJHL with Golden, then went to Revelstoke. “We are growing people first. If you can make that your primary focus, what we all do collectively to give them that opportunity to grow just complements not only our program, but our league for these kids going forward. I think that’s a real rubber stamp on the KIJHL.” Developing in the Heat program is a great option for players because they get the full junior experience of being in a small community. The players see each other everyday and understand the importance of continuity. “When we designed this program, we designed it on a Junior A template,” says Fox, who was an assistant coach in the Alberta Junior Hockey League for four seasons. “We’re going to do everything that Junior A does, but not at the same budget. Everything they offer, we offer. These kids and their parents buy into our program and there is value in ice, development, personal growth - firstclass in how we operate. The things that they get, the things that they do. Once they get here and get a feel for it and see

that it is a family and run as well as it is, one of the first comments I often get is, ‘Wow, we never expected this.’ That’s compliment to the program.” To Fox, the KIJHL has created a template for players that are under the radar and haven’t quite reached their potential. Fox began coaching at 14 when he played Bantam, standing on the bench of a female team for a season. When he finished playing Junior A, a two-and-a-half year career with the Drumheller Falcons, Sherwood Park Crusaders, St. Albert Saints and Fort Saskatchewan Traders in the AJHL, he took on a midget team for one season before embarking on his junior coaching career, which included a season in the WHL with the Lethbridge Hurricanes. He took nine years off to work in the fuel and gas industry, starting up Fox Hockey on the side, then came to the KIJHL. He has worked in skill development teaching every level of player up to college and minor pro for 38 years. While being in the KIJHL, the 59-yearold has learned a lot. “I’ve learned a lot about myself in regards to the first piece of advice I would give to any incoming coach coming through, is rule No. 1 - get over yourself. It's really not about you,” he says. “Check your ego at the door and take the time to really learn about the kids and the people and care about them. I was one of those guys that was so driven by winning, that at times that I forgot to care about who they were versus what they were. That became a crucial item going forward for me.” As the league progressed, it became evident to Fox how underrated the KIJHL was. “From when I first came into this league, to where we are now, there are a lot of really good players. There always has been.”

Interior Savings Calls Students to Collect: $500,000 in Bursary Funds Unclaimed With over half a million in bursaries still available, Interior Savings prompts students to act before the February 28th application deadline. “Since launching the Million Dollar Bursary Program in 2013, we have now surpassed $3.5 million in awards, $42,000 of which has gone to members of our Chase Branch,” said Corinne Johnson, Manager, Community Engagement at Interior Savings. For the eighth year running, Interior Savings is again offering awards of $1000 to 1,000 students through its Million Dollar Bursary Program. Yet, so far, they have received about 500 applications. With many feeling the financial pinch due to the pandemic, the Credit Union is determined to make one final push to reach local students in need of help with tuition. “Due to the pandemic, it has been a bit trickier to reach students and I’m hoping you can help us get the word out. We would love to see even more Chase students qualify for a bursary this year,” said Johnson. Applying for the program is easy. There are no lengthy essays, references, or high academic grades needed. To qualify, applicants simply need to be 17 to 24 years old, use their Interior Savings account regularly, and provide proof of enrollment and tuition payment to a

designated post-secondary institution. While you need to be a member of the Credit Union to qualify, it’s not too late to join. “There’s still time for students to become an Interior Savings member to qualify for a bursary and to take advantage of the benefits membership offers, including one-on-one financial coaching, a share of our profits and a free account for youth,” said Interior Savings CEO, Kathy Conway. This program is one of the ways the Credit Union gives back to its members. As a cooperatively-owned financial institution, Interior Savings shares 22% of profits with its members through dividends, cash rewards and, you guessed it, bursaries. “We’re here to help our members with the financial tools and advice they need through every stage of their life journey,” adds Conway. “And what better way to set our young members up for success than to support their education.” The deadline to become a member and apply for this bursary is February 28. Visit www.milliondollarbursary.com for more information or to apply. For those who do not meet the requirements of this program, the Credit Union also supports Credit Union Foundation of BC awards and numerous Lifelong Learner Bursaries.
