Submitted by The Chase & District Musuem and Archives he scene above was snapped at the New Years celebration 104 years ago at the Black Douglas Opera House in Chase (often referred to as Robinson’s Hall.) The murals in the Opera house were painted by Howard Smith. Unfortunately the opera house, which sat at the corner of Thompson Ave and Chase Street and its paintings by Smith were lost to us in a fire in 1958. At the time of the fire the building housed the Chase Legion. (Photo 03-03-19 Chase Museum archives)

“Guess The Object” ealed v e R r e w s n A
This picture ran in the December 9th issue of the Sunflower, inviting guessses on the name of this object, which resides at the Chase and District Museum and Archives. There was only one guess, and it was the correct one, by Preston Arens. According to Diana Ball, curator, the item is a “magnometer”. It was “used for medical purposes, it would be placed on the area with the problem and deliver a small electric current. This one is very tiny and has a date of April 27 1907 on it.

Homemade Marshmellows Ingredients 3 packages unflavored gelatin 1 cup ice cold water, divided 12 ounces granulated sugar, approximately 1 1/2 cups 1 cup light corn syrup 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/4 cup confectioners’ sugar 1/4 cup cornstarch Nonstick spray Place the gelatin into the bowl of a stand mixer along with 1/2 cup of the water. Have the whisk attachment standing by. In a small saucepan combine the remaining 1/2 cup water, granulated sugar, corn syrup and salt. Place over medium high heat, cover and allow to cook for 3 to 4 minutes. Uncover, clip a candy thermometer onto the side of the pan and continue to cook until the mixture reaches 240 degrees F, approximately 7 to 8 minutes. Once the mixture reaches this temperature, immediately remove from the heat. Turn the mixer on low speed and, while running, slowly pour the sugar syrup down the side of the bowl into the gelatin mixture. Once you have added all of the syrup, increase the
speed to high. Continue to whip until the mixture becomes very thick and is lukewarm, approximately 12 to 15 minutes. Add the vanilla during the last minute of whipping. While the mixture is whipping prepare the pans as follows. Combine the confectioners’ sugar and cornstarch in a small bowl. Lightly spray a 13 by 9-inch metal baking pan with nonstick cooking spray. Add the sugar and cornstarch mixture and move around to completely coat the bottom and sides of the pan. Return the remaining mixture to the bowl for later use. When ready, pour the mixture into the prepared pan, using a lightly oiled spatula for spreading evenly into the pan. Dust the top with enough of the remaining sugar and cornstarch mixture to lightly cover. Reserve the rest for later. Allow the marshmallows to sit uncovered for at least 4 hours and up to overnight. Turn the marshmallows out onto a cutting board and cut into 1-inch squares using a pizza wheel dusted with the confectioners’ sugar mixture. Once cut, lightly dust all sides of each marshmallow with the remaining mixture, using additional if necessary. Store in an airtight container for up to 3 weeks.

Village of Chase Budget Meetings
The Village updates its five-year financial plan each year to ensure the Village’s finances are managed responsibly and to reflect the priorities identified by Council and the community. The 2017-2021 Financial Plan provides funding requirements for 2017 and projections for 2018-2021 that indicate future requirements for the Municipality at a summary level. Within the next few weeks, Council will be reviewing its strategic plan that outlines their goals and objectives for the upcoming year. This strategic plan is used to focus limited resources, with the goal of linking work and new projects to Council’s goals and objectives. Council approves the five-year financial plan each year. The financial plan or budget, details municipal spending. Budgets affect property taxes collected. If the Village’s overall budget increases, property taxes may also increase. We encourage taxpaying residents of Chase to participate in the budget process. The next scheduled meeting is Monday, January 16, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. This particular meeting will focus on the total summary budget that became public December 10, 2016; a discussion on the capital budget; and a general overview on Chase’s financial situation. We hope you can participate and look forward to your attendance.

Cold, cough & flu season has arrived submitted by Interior Health
It’s that time of year where sniffles, sneezes, and other ailments seem to be lurking around every corner. Read on to find out how to best take care of yourself and your loved ones who may be feeling under the weather at this time of year. In most healthy people, influenza symptoms such as headache, fever, coughing and sneezing and sore throat can last five to seven days. These symptoms are best treated at home by resting, drinking lots of fluids, and taking medicine to lower a fever. Anyone suffering from influenza symptoms should minimize contact with others by staying home from work, school and holiday gatherings to reduce the risk of spreading infection to others. It’s also important to remember general prevention measures such as frequent and proper hand washing, covering noses and mouths when coughing or sneezing, cleaning frequently touched
surfaces, and properly disposing of tissues. Influenza can be particularly severe for some people such as older adults, people with chronic health conditions, and babies. If your symptoms are getting worse or you are not recovering, call HealthLink BC at 8-1-1 for medical advice. This free service will connect you with a health-care professional who can provide advice about how to manage your health concerns or those of your loved ones. Alternatively, you may choose to call or visit your doctor or go to a walk-in clinic. If your symptoms become severe, go to the emergency department of the nearest health-care facility right away. For example, go to hospital if you have: • Problems breathing; • Pain in your chest; or • A high fever that does not get better after three to four days.
Village of Chase Annual Reports Annual Reports provide an overview of the major achievements and significant projects completed during the past year, as well as providing each department’s objectives, accomplishments and initiatives for the upcoming year. The report includes financial statements and serves as a form of accountability to the public. As per Section 99 of the Community Charter, a Council must annually consider at a public meeting the annual report. The Village of Chase 2015 annual report will be considered by Council at the January 24, 2017 Regular Meeting at 4:00 p.m. at the Village Office. The Paper Shredder A young executive is leaving the office late one evening, when he finds the CEO standing in front of a shredder with a piece of paper in his hand. “Listen,” said the CEO, “this is a very sensitive and important document here, and my secretary has gone for the night. Can you make this thing work for me?” “Certainly,” the young executive says. He turns the machine on, inserts the paper, and presses the start button. “Excellent, excellent!” says the CEO as his paper disappears inside the machine. “I just need one copy.”
