Anyone interested in improving community health services is invited to attend the regular meeting which will begin at 1:00 and precede the AGM. The Chase & District Health Services Foundation has been in existence for over twenty years. The purposes of the foundation are to : (1) further the improvement of patient services

in the catchment area of the Chase & District Health Centre and other health facilities through providing support for development, equipment, education and research.; (2) operate as a fund-raising vehicle through community and regional appeals for funds by receiving legacies, donations, gifts, bequests and endowments from all sources, including without limiting the foregoing, those from other charitable foundations and charitable organizations.

The Chase Museum is hosting its annual Strawberry Tea on Saturday, June 23rd from 2-4pm and it will be held rain or shine!

The Strawberry Tea has been held by the Chase Museum for more than a decade and is one of our main fundraisers. The homemade cake is drenched with strawberries, topped with a generous dollop of freshly whipped cream and served with endless tea and coffee served in proper fine china. There will also be tickets available for both a raffle and the museum’s 50/50 draw. In addition, the museum’s exhibits will be open all day!

CHASE & DISTRICT FISH & GAME CLUB: UPDATE #3

The Chase and District Fish and Game club had a very busy last two weekends. The last weekend of May the Family campout and Fishing Derby took place at the range.

This campout and derby is open to everyone – not just CDFGC members. The CDFGC definitely wants to encourage and share knowledge of the outdoors, sportsmanship, and respect for wildlife and habitat with the youth. Our goal is to grow our club and get more youth involved in the outdoors and nature.

There was a smaller turnout of participants than in previous years, but those that came had a great time fishing, socializing, playing games, horse shoes, practicing archery and enjoying a great pork loin BBQ with potluck salads. For those of you that did not come out, I can guarantee you missed a great time.

There were some nice prizes for the fishermen as well. Looks like the women need more practice!! Hope to see you in the prizes next year ladies!

Ralph Bischoff took 1st place in the adult division, Terry Berreth took 2nd place.

Lukas Bischoff took 1st place in the children’s division.

The next weekend the CDFGC put on their annual 3-D shoot. There were approximately 35 archers on Saturday and 40 on Sunday.

Entrants came from as far away as the Semiahmoo Club at the coast. Two great courses of 20 animals each were set up with many interesting, original, and at times challenging stations. There were many classes of archers. Youth (13 to 18 yrs), cubs (9 to 12yrs), ladies and men subdivided into the type of bows used. The best of all was to see so many brand new archers that came out to try this sport (myself and my husband being two of them). I encourage anyone to come try this sport. It was so much fun and experienced archers are so friendly and encouraging.

In the evening everyone got together in the middle of the field and enjoyed a gigantic potluck dinner of BBQ pork, a smoked turkey, venison, buffalo, and

myriad of salads and desserts. There were some money prizes for the winners and awesome door prizes for the participants.

The CDFGC meets the 3rd Monday of the month at Creekside Hall on Shuswap Avenue in Chase at 7:30 pm. No meetings in July or August. Memberships can be picked up at Miller’s Cabin in Chase. Orientations are required to get a key to use the range.

Opinion Women’s Issues—Not Just the Gals’ Files

What are commonly called “women’s issues” are in actuality everyone’s issues.

Few, if any of us live an isolated existence.

We have family, friends and colleagues.

And matters such as nutrition, health, stress, and the environment involve all of us.

There are two words no woman wants to hear from her physician: breast cancer. Such a diagnosis slams her in the gut, clutches at her heart, and does the same for her spouse and children.

Occurrence statistics 25 years ago were one in ten. Although survival rates are higher now, the diagnosis rate today is one in eight.

Breast self-exam and regular screening are important—and given the recent announcement that some breast cancers without lymph node involvement can be treated minus toxic chemotherapy, such early detection is even more vital.

A 40-something wife and mother of young children diagnosed with breast cancer hangs onto the encouraging words of a friend who said, “We will deal with this!” And she eventually repeatedly told herself, “I have cancer— cancer doesn’t have me!” Talking with her children was more than difficult.

But discussing the medicine she’d take, re-assuring them she’d get through it, and that they would be the first to know if anything changed seemed to ease the situation. Crying with her husband, holding on to each other, grasping for hope were all part of the cancer terrain.

And her sport saved her sanity during treatment and for the next two anxious years, the most probable timeframe for recurrence.

Yes, she did survive but she was forever changed, in positive ways, as were her family. She and her husband treasured their years together, thankful every day that the time was not shortened. Her daughter would, as an adult, be screened earlier because of her mother’s medical history. The family closely examined food labels for additives and chose what was more wholesome and organic. To this day, they are all physically active

through regular exercise.

Such a serious disease occurring in a relatively young woman segues to the toxic soup in which we live. The air we breathe, the water we drink, and the foods we eat have been compromised.

And while steps have been taken to correct some of the horrific environmental missteps of the past, such as the carcinogenic toxins DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane), asbestos, and PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls), it remains critical that comprehensive action proceed in order to protect life that inhabits this planet.

Vehicle exhaust reduction, fewer unrecyclable plastics, uncontaminated water, and less harmful food production are all part of it—to name a few.

Dr. David Suzuki has been beating the same eco-drum for decades—and I long ago joined him in that drumming. We can indeed hold governments, legislators, and corporations accountable—through letters, phone calls, at election polls, and by our shopping preferences. Make them aware that we’re watching. And that we care deeply about what is to be left for our grandchildren …. indeed, for all flora and fauna of the future.

Then, there’s the aging thing … it’s easy to slip into a sedentary lifestyle as years go by. And that’s a big mistake.

The only near panacea that exists is exercise. It’s good for mind, body and soul. Personally, I’ve always wanted to flame out, rather than rust out. The uplifting endorphins produced through reasonably vigorous activity are 20 times more powerful than morphine. Great for your outlook, definitely good for physical and emotional health too.

Guys and gals lose muscle mass with age. Bone density lessens if there are no weight bearing workouts. Blood sugar and blood pressure both can be lowered through exercise—not to mention weight. And I’m talking about fitness here not thinness. We are not all built the same, and few of us are represented by the stick people who model clothing.

Women’s Issues

Yes, there are a few more realistic looking models walking the runways these days but comparing oneself to those in fashion magazines or on television is not a good idea. In addition, being inordinately thin can further compromise an individual undergoing serious medical treatment or surgery. Having a little meat on the bones helps to withstand interventions.

But you say, I have no time for exercise, it’s expensive, it’s like work, I’ve never done it, I’m overweight … old …. tired.

Well firstly, you don’t find time—it’s not found lying under a bench at the mall—you have to make time.

To improve fitness it takes just three multi-faceted, one-hour sessions a week. Maintaining fitness can be accomplished in two effective sessions each week. What’s effective? you ask. If your heart rate is up, breathing rate has increased but you can still talk, that’s about right. If you’re gasping, that’s too much, and if you can sing and whistle, that’s not a work-out.

Cost – well, a reasonably good pair of athletic shoes and a hill are all it takes to begin a fitness regime. And once you’ve found something you like, it’s really missed if you don’t get at it regularly.

It’s fun—not work. And finding a motivated workout buddy is definitely a plus.

Never exercised?—it was once said by Phys Ed Professor George Kinnear that the sicker you are, the more aches and pains you have, the more involved you should be in strength training, in exercise. But, I would add, check with your physician before starting out on the ‘new you.’

Extra pounds, think you’re too old, too tired?— start slow. Better to work the heart working out than to overwork it circulating fluids through excess weight. Age is a number—and it’s never too late to start. As a bonus, you’ll have more energy when you’re more active. Fatigue lessens with work-outs. And you’ll sleep better. More reps and fewer meds isn’t such a bad idea. It’s all about selfcare and taking time for you. Whether male or female, adult or child, exercise works.

But how do we get on with all this in a world that bombards us with toxic substances, full schedules, and too much bad news? How do we find our essence, who we really are, with so much ongoing?

In addition to exercise, it’s important to build in ‘down time’ when it’s needed (without guilt!). I am definitely not an advocate of driving oneself relentlessly—that could mean a short trip to over the edge. Doing something just for me is part of self-care—perhaps a massage, a pedicure, yoga, a hike, a relaxing swim and float, a walk in a park,

music, art, a hobby or a creative project. Whatever lets you unwind. Pursue it regularly. You’ll be better for it.

“Carpe diem!” Indeed, seize the day. And let’s do it just for the health of it!

Place the cauliflower florets in a large bowl. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and microwave for 10 minutes on high, or until the florets are soft and tender.

Mash the florets with a potato masher.

Add the remaining ingredients. Mash and mix to your desired consistency.

Spoon the mixture into a 1½ quart baking dish which has been sprayed with cooking spray. Bake in a preheated oven for 20-25 minutes. Serve hot.

Page 11 • June 15th, 2018 • Chase Sunflower Obituary JASON ROGER DOMINICK Jason was born on February 10, 1976 in Montreal, Point Clair. He left us suddenly in a tragic accident to navigate a new world (maybe snowboarding) on May 25, 2018 in Calgary, Alberta.

He is lovingly remembered by, mom Charon Bevans (Cleve Bevans), his son Nathan Dominick of Montreal, sister Shannon (Nigel) Henningham, his two brothers Steven Dominick and Bobby Dominick; his father Roger Dominick of Montreal; his grandparents Ron and Connie Hurley of Vancouver Island; his girlfriend Josie; his uncle Trevor Hurley and uncle Gordon Hurley. Jason was predeceased by grandparents Mr. & Mrs. Roger Dominick.

He will be sadly missed by many friends, cousins and co-workers.
