Chase and District Fish & Game Update: FREE OPEN HOUSE COMING UP submitted by Helen Dalin secretary
During the last month the Chase and District Fish and Game Club completed two busy events – the annual Fishing Derby and their annual 3-D shoot. The local 3-D shoot had rave reviews from archers who attended and the local club is very proud of its success. There are some great pictures posted on our Facebook page. Please take a look. Many out of town archers remarked on what a wonderful gem of an area and facility we have at the range in Turtle Valley. This got the club thinking that we would like to share our facility with the public through an Open House on Sunday, August 12th since it has been several years since we had one. How does a Fish and Game Club put on an Open House you may be wondering if everything is outside? Well, it won’t be like your usual Open House where you just look at items and buildings. At this Open House you will be able try out and participate in 3 activities, trap shooting, archery and rifle shooting. This event is
open to everyone, so please bring your friends and family that may be visiting you that weekend. CDFGC members will be at each venue to help you try each activity. Bring your own 22’s, shotgun and bows if you have one. If you don’t have your own bow, shotgun or rifle – not a problem. Equipment will be there to use. Safety equipment will be provided and club members will be there to supervise and make sure everything is completed safely. Everything is FREE. Hot dogs, hamburgers, pop, water, all shooting events, and of course a great time to socialize with a lot of outdoor enthusiasts. The venues will open to the public at 10 am and close at 3 pm on Sunday August 12th. All ages are welcome, but children and minors under 16 must be accompanied by a parent at all venues during the day. We are inviting the whole of our district community to come out and see what is offered by the local CDFGC. Please help us spread the word about our Open House. Come out and
try one, or all the activities. You may find that you really like one of the new sports you try. This event is also to encourage young ones, women and others that don’t have the opportunity to experience, or haven’t had the ability to experience the outdoors, a great chance to get out to try out a new sport that many would never otherwise experience. Best of all it is FREE! For all you regular members that would like to volunteer to help and share your enthusiasm and interest in the outdoor sports please call Helen Dalin 250-6798019 or Vickey Bischoff 250 -955-2374. Our club is always open to new members. We meet the 3rd Monday of the Month at 7:30 pm at Creekside Center in Chase. We have regular Trap and Skeet practice at the range on the 2nd Sunday of the month and it will continue in July on Sunday July 8th, 2018. The August Sunday will be our Open House instead. If you have any questions you can contact Helen Dalin at 250-679-8019.

Opinion
Good News Stories by Carolyn Parks Mintz, Author, Journalist, Freelance Writer
It’s obvious that bad news sells. Television, radio, major newspapers, and social media are rife with tales of strife, violence, harassment and bullying. I try to read and listen selectively but it seems to be pervasive. However, then there are the wholesome, helpful people who do and say nice things—restoring faith in the human condition and making Canada a good place to live, a place that welcomes those ‘come from away,’ that, in time and with
change, will provide equally for all its citizens, and is a country where prejudice is denounced by the majority. The stalwart friend who will sit and listen to your distress, hold your hand, and ‘be there’ for as long as it takes, is invaluable when life’s slings and arrows threaten to take us down. And isn’t it warming (cockles of the heart come to mind) when a relative calls just to say hello, to catch up, and because they miss us? At a time when I was dealing with a serious illness and surgery while employed w i t h i n the Jewish c o m m u n i t y, the friends (Jewish and non-Jewish) who delivered countless prepared meals to help with feeding our family of young children did as much for my healing as the medicos. And are fondly remembered with gratitude to this day. Stressful work issues seem to lessen when shared with a friend or colleague who understands and who perhaps offers advice that changes our perspective on
a difficult situation. The good neighbour who lends a hand without even being asked can brighten an afternoon and make one glad to be neighbours by chance but friends by choice. And aren’t old friends simply the ‘gold’ within our lives? They know where we’ve been and they can see where we’re at. Then there are the extraordinary acts of bravery which are carried out just do to what’s right and because they are necessary to perhaps save a life or alleviate danger to someone else. Putting oneself at risk for the sake of others has to be the ultimate example of altruism. Something as simple as a smiling stranger opening a door to help us through it can be an uplifting moment in our day. It’s encouraging that there are those of another ethnicity who disregard differences and see only a human, a person just like them in so many ways, someone they like and want to get to know. Building bridges instead of walls is a good thing for all involved. It says much about the strength of we frail humans that there are people who take a stand against misogyny, homophobia, hypocrisy, racism and sexism—recognizing the evil that can emanate from such biases. Close friendships that flourish, independent of skin colour, cultural background, the gender of one’s spouse, or physical challenges are especially special and definitely enriching. Vive la différence! Anne Murray once sang “Sure could use a little good news, today.” And she was right. But you know it is out there and around us. We just have to see it, be open to it—and at the same time, extend positive energy and conduct to others. It’s true that what goes around comes around, and as in a relationship, we get out of each day what we put into it. Our choice. Have a good one. I’m pullin’ for ya!
Page 7 • July 6th, 2018 • Chase Sunflower Chicken and Bacon Shish Kabobs 1/4 cup soy sauce 1/4 cup cider vinegar 2 tablespoons honey 2 tablespoons canola oil 10 large mushrooms, cut in half 2 green onions, minced 3 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves - cut into chunks 1/2 pound sliced thick cut bacon, cut in half 1 (8 ounce) can pineapple chunks, drained skewers In a large bowl, mix the soy sauce, cider vinegar, honey, canola oil, and green onions. Place the mushrooms and chicken into the mixture, and stir to coat. Cover, and marinate in the refrigerator at least 1 hour.
Preheat grill for high heat. Remove the mushrooms and chicken from the marinade and shake off excess. Pour the marinade into a small saucepan and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for 10 minutes; set aside. Wrap the chicken chunks with bacon, and thread onto skewers so that the bacon is secured. Alternate with mushroom halves and pineapple chunks. Lightly oil the grill grate. Arrange skewers on the prepared grill. Cook 15 to 20 minutes, brushing occasionally with remaining soy sauce mixture, until bacon is crisp and chicken juices run clear.

Obituary George Foster George Foster of Pritchard, BC passed away peacefully on May 29, 2018 at the Ponderosa Lodge in Kamloops at the age of 88 years. George, known for his infectious laugh, made his home in Pritchard BC for the past several decades and as a young man road the rails in BC and eventually worked for many years at the Thompson Park Mall until his retirement. He enjoyed fishing at Bootjack Lake with his wife Rose and his friends, reading Louis L'Amour novels, watching hockey, working in his garden and also had a great love for a good dessert. He is survived by his wife of 52 years Rose, his brothers Edward (Marion) and John (Martha), his daughters Barb (Doug), Carol (Terry) Patricia and Candice; and his grandchildren Tracey, James (Kristina) and Amanda, and his great grandchildren. We encourage our family and friends far and wide to remember George by having a beer on him, sharing stories and think about him when you watch his favourite movie "Lawrence of Arabia".
Obituary ANDRUS, Clifford Dougall June 27,1932 - June 28, 2018 Son of Clifford Everett Andrus and Clarice Pauline Andrus (nee Lockard). Predeceased by his step son Dale Dupuis and survived by his wife Rita, children Myles (Ana) and Susan, grandchildren Dale, Emily, Andrew, and Thomas, plus his best little buddy Berry. He also leaves behind cousins Bev, Val, Tim, Lorraine, and Doreen, who were like siblings to him, having lived with them at different times as a boy. Cliff began his journey in Calgary General Hospital and spent most of his childhood in Sunnyside, Calgary. He also lived awhile on the Oliver Farm in Sundre, AB. Though he tried on many hats, he was most proud to serve ten years in the RCAF as a fireman, then from 1964 to 1991 with the CPR as a railroader. He was dedicated to his job and never turned down a trip. Afterward he retired to his beloved Shuswap, BC and swore he would never leave. We thank the many homecare aides, nurses, and doctors in Chase and at the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Hospice where he spent his last days. As per his wishes, there will be no funeral but a tree will be planted to commemorate his life.

BILLET HOMES NEEDED We need Billet Homes for the 2018/2019 hockey season!! Season is September until end of February/March We need you to open your home! Please help us keep THE HEAT in Chase.
Each billet home receives $600.00 per month / per player and one general admission pass. The Chase Heat will be arriving in town in August to start their 2018-2019 hockey season. Once the team has been selected the out of town players will need a place to live for the hockey season (September 2018-March 2019). The boys come from all areas of British Columbia and beyond and vary from 16 to 20 years in age. Some boys are still in school (these players attend Chase Secondary during their stay in Chase) and some have already graduated. What they all have in common is their love for the sport and their desire to provide Chase with many hours
of exciting hockey. Being a billet family is a rewarding experience and adds a whole new dimension to the otherwise dreary Chase winter. It is important that you are able to welcome these boy/ boys into your home and provide him/ them with healthy meals and a safe environment. This ’home away from home’ is important to enable the boys to be successful on the ice and in everyday life. Providing a smoke free living area is essential. If this opportunity sounds intriguing and you would like more information please Contact Lana Adamson 250574-3681
