Air quality and health could be impacted by smoky skies submitted by Interior Health

Residents in communities across Interior Health affected by fires burning and resulting smoky skies should be aware that smoke conditions and local air quality can change due to the unpredictable nature of fires. Some individuals may be more sensitive to the effects of smoke from forest fires, such as those with heart or lung conditions. These individuals should watch for any change in symptoms that may be due to smoke exposure. If any symptoms are noted, affected individuals should take steps to reduce their exposure to smoke and if necessary see their physician or local walk-in clinic. People with severe symptoms should present themselves to the nearest Emergency Department. Reducing Exposure to Smoke There are some actions you can take to reduce the health effects of smoke in the air: • People with heart or lung conditions may be more sensitive to the effects of smoke and should watch for any change in symptoms that may be due to smoke exposure. If any symptoms are noted, affected individuals should take steps to reduce their exposure to smoke and if necessary see their physician. People with symptoms should go to their health care provider, walk in clinic or emergency department depending on severity of symptoms. • Use common sense regarding outdoor physical activity – if your breathing becomes difficult or uncomfortable, stop or reduce the activity. • Stay cool and drink plenty of fluids. • Smoke levels may be lower

• Repairs • Parts • bikes

indoors, however levels of smoke particles will still be increased. If you stay indoors, be aware of your symptoms. • Consider visiting a location like a shopping mall with cooler filtered air. Keep in mind that staying indoors may help you stay cool and provide some relief from the smoke. However, many air conditioning systems do not filter the air or improve indoor air quality. • Reduce indoor pollution sources such as smoking or burning other materials. • You may be able to reduce your exposure to smoke by moving to cleaner air. Conditions can vary dramatically by area and elevation. • Residents with asthma or other chronic illness should activate their asthma or personal care plan. • Pay attention to local air quality reports, air quality may be poor even though smoke may not be visible. • Commercially available HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filters can further reduce poor indoor air quality near the device. • Maintaining good overall health is a good way to prevent health effects resulting from short-term exposure to air pollution. For general information about smoke and your health, contact HealthLink BC available toll free, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 8-1-1. If the public wants to know the Air Quality Health Index for their region, log on to www.bcairquality.ca. For fire information, visit www.bcwildfire.ca

Chamber accepting donations for fire victims

Others decided to donate to the Red Cross at our office, which we will gladly assist anyone else with until our state of emergency ends For anyone who wants to help BC’s evacuees, the TNRD is calling for monetary donations above goods. Aid workers, volunteers and evacuees themselves can allocate financial resources to unforeseen needs. If you’d like to donate an item already in your possession, Kamloops evacuation centres have expressed a special need for pet food and supplies such as litter, litter trays, leashes and kennels. To see what other donations are currently in demand, you can visit the TNRD or Caribou district Facebook pages to optimize your impact. Your donations are welcome at the Chase Chamber, where we have volunteer drivers to bring the goods to the centres. We are happy to assist anyone who comes in to donate to the Red Cross. You can donate via cheque or cash and receive a receipt in the mail, or we can assist you in donating online with our computers, where you will receive an instant electronic

receipt. You can also assist anyone you know who’s been evacuated by encouraging them to register with the Red Cross. By registering with the Red Cross, evacuees are eligible for aid, and friends or family members can call into the Red Cross to confirm that you’ve been safely evacuated. If you’d like to make your involvement more personal, Air B&B has activated their Disaster Response Programme. Anyone in Chase with a spare room, suite, cabin or even a trailer in their driveway can register for free on Air B&B to offer accommodation to evacuees. If you are unfamiliar with Air B&B, the staff at the Chase Chamber of Commerce and Info Centre would be happy to help you register at our office. For anyone with questions about wildfire status, road closures, air quality and park closures, you can read our posted list of resources on our Facebook page or come by the Chamber for our updated posters and staff. We wish you all the best in this state of emergency and are happy to serve our community with information.

Earlier in May, the world was hit with a ransomware attack. Within the following week there were over 300,000 documented cases of computers and networks effected by WannaCry. WannaCry quickly encrypts your computer files, renders them useless, and demands a fee of $300 USD to be paid in Bitcoin. Bitcoin, an online currency that is virtually untraceable, is a favourite payment method of hackers. Let’s step back and explain what ransomware is and, more specifically, how WannaCry gets into your system and how to protect yourself. According to Wikipedia, “Ransomware is a type of malicious software that carries out the cryptoviral extortion attack from cryptovirology that blocks access to data until a ransom is paid and displays a message requesting payment to unlock it”. What does this mean? Ransomware encrypts (locks) your computer files and are virtually impossible to decrypt (unlock) without paying someone for the key required to unlock your files. Most ransomware cannot be decrypted without paying the ransom. Even then, you cannot be sure the ‘key’ you are provided with will unlock your files. Paying a ransom can also make you susceptible to further attacks since the authors of the malicious software know that you will pay to retrieve your data. How does ransomware get onto your computer? Most forms of ransomware are disguised as legitimate email attachments. Once opened, the ‘payload’ is unleashed onto your computer and your files are all locked. However, in the case of WannaCry, no file needs to be opened since it exploits a known vulnerability in Windows. If your computer has not had the latest updates, and you are online, you can become the next victim. How can you protect a computer from Ransomware? While there is no fool-

proof method to stop ransomware, there are steps that everyone can take to ensure that systems are protected. 1. Keep your system up-to-date with the latest Microsoft Windows updates. Twice a month, Microsoft releases updates for their operating systems and software. Without these updates, hackers can gain access to your system. WannaCry exploited systems that had not been kept up to date. 2. Up-to-date, reputable Antivirus program Antivirus programs are great tools to protect our systems. Free versions provide some protection against known ransomware. However, paid Antivirus programs utilize more advanced technology to stop programs from running. 3. Regular data backups Backing up your data ensures your data is kept safe. Depending on the amount of data being stored, one can use a USB thumb drive or USB external drive. The most important thing is to unplug your drive once you have finished your backup. If the drive is in your computer when you are hit by ransomware, then it can become encrypted as well. WannaCry has been stopped from infecting anyone else, but even this is coming under constant attack and new versions have been uncovered. There are very few ransomware programs that can be decrypted without a key. Once your system is infected, your choices are either to pay the ransom, or to wipe your hard drive, reinstall Windows, and start over without your personal data. Follow the 3 steps above and you are on your way to keeping your system and your data protected. As always, if you need advice or help to protect your system, contact us on Facebook, Twitter, email or phone.

BILLET HOMES WANTED submitted by Chase Heat The Chase Heat will be arriving in town in August to start their 2017-2018 hockey season. Once the team has been selected the out of town players will need a place to live for the hockey season (September 2017-March 2018). The boys come from all areas of British Columbia and beyond and vary from 16 to 20 years in age. Some boys are still in school (these players attend Chase Secondary during their stay in Chase) and some have already graduated. What they all have in common is their love for the sport and their desire to provide Chase with many hours of exciting hockey. Being a billet family is a

rewarding experience and adds a whole new dimension to the otherwise dreary Chase winter. It is important that you are able to welcome these boy/boys into your home and provide him/them with healthy meals and a safe environment. This ’home away from home’ is important to enable the boys to be successful on the ice and in everyday life. Providing a smoke free living area is essential. If this opportunity sounds intriguing and you would like more information please contact Lana Adamson 250574-3681

simmer until mixture has thickened enough to coat the back of a spoon. Preheat grill to 375º. Place salmon, skin-side down, onto a cedar plank board (that has been soaking for 30 minutes) or place salmon onto a parchment-lined baking sheet. Season with salt and pepper. Grill salmon with the lid closed until salmon has barely cooked through, 18 to 20 minutes. Brush teriyaki sauce generously over salmon and cover grill again. Grill 5 minutes more, then remove from heat and coat with more glaze, if desired. Place green onions directly on hot grill surface and sear on each side, 2 to 3 minutes. Top salmon with sesame seeds and serve with grilled green onions.

Upcoming Musician Bio:: Jeremy Kneeshaw submitted by Chase and District Festival Society

Next on the Music on the Lake stage on Tuesday evening is a songwriter and performer, Jeremy Kneeshaw. He made the leap from a full time carpenter to musician in 2015. From early beginnings in piano at the age of 2, music has been his passion for his entire life; playing guitar, piano, drums, bass, mandolin, banjo, flute, accordion and more. Having release his first album at 19, the self titled ‘Jeremy

Kneeshaw Album” recorded entirely by Jeremy himself, he won the Akedamia Jazz/Funk/ Fusion award for November 2016, and was given a spot at the Akedamia Awards Ceremony at the Rosebowl Satium in LA.
