NOTHING LIKE A HOME COOKED MEAL

ast week the Chase Lions Club raised over $1700 through a hot dog fundraiser in the pocket park in Chase. The funds were used to feed wildfire evacuees at the Kamloops Pow Wow grounds. The club worked alongside two other local Lions Club on Friday, Saturday and Sunday to provide meals over 1000 people who have been displaced from their homes in BC. The Lions Club served hamburgers, hot dogs, ribs, chicken, baked potatoes, fresh fruit, veggies, and home baking.

On Sunday there was a special pancake breakfast with strawberries and whipped cream.

“The need for food and personal items is imminent and sadly for many there was no place to turn,” said Chase Lions member, Bev Iglesias.

The Chase Lions can also accept monetary donations that will be used to provide support to communities post-evacuation. The money can assist communities directly through local Lions Clubs, without any of the donations going towards administration fees.

Chase Firefighters collecting for displaced animals

Chase firefighters association is hosting a Pet Food/Supply drive for the displaced animals due to the wildfires.

Donations can be made at the Chase firehall, a drop off bin had been setup at the front entrance.

For those with limited mobility within chase, contact Alison Lauzon at 250-3194034 for pick up.

All donations will be given to Four Paws Food Bank, who are currently tending to the evacuees at the ESS located at Riverside Park. Due to extensive veterinary bills, monetary donations are especially encouraged.

In Chase, there are many things that make us great: our beach and pier, mountain sheep, the Chase Creek Falls, and Little Shuswap Lake. Yet, there’s one thing that people often forget to include in that list: the locally owned small businesses of the community.

May they be unique, beneficial (or both), the local businesses are what gives this village its own special flare.

Aside from keeping your money in the local economy and not into the pockets of CEOs of transnational corporations, you’re allowing these businesses to stay in business and for the owners to have a livelihood doing something they love.

Not to mention, you’re benefiting the community in general by keeping them in business.

With that being said, the average citizen of Chase may not realize all that local business do to give back to

the community that gives to them. Not only is it a promotion of their business to involved in community events, but it gives community members a chance to see the business owner in a different light and energy. So taking these times in BC’s state of emergency, local Chase businesses contributing what they can to help evacuees in any way possible is truly something to see.

Therefore, businesses hold a greater role in Chase than most realize. To be involved in the community creates a cycle of trust between business owners and customers.

For as long as Chase citizens support business, and business owners support the community back, positive things are sure to come out of this unique bond.

Girl Donates Piggy Bank to Help Pets An Alberta girl whose auntie lives in Chase has been watching news of the wildfires and wanted to help. Emah, 11, has decided to empty her piggy bank of $174 and donate the money to the animals affected by the BC fires. She has a huge heart and loves all animals.

Emah wants to be a vet when she grows up, and that has been her dream since she was 3. Her donation bought a big pile of cat and dog food which was donated to evacuated animals.

RCMP Report submitted by Chase RCMP

TRAFFIC On July 13th, 2017 at 00:30am, Chase RCMP received a report of a motor vehicle collision on the Trans-Canada Highway approximately 5 kms east of Chase. A Toyota Corolla was westbound in the passing lane while overtaking a tractor trailer unit. A GMC truck attempted to pass both vehicles by driving in the eastbound lanes. An oncoming vehicle forced the truck to enter the lane of the Corolla which struck the side of the tractor trailer. No injuries were sustained. Charges pursuant to the Motor Vehicle Act are pending for the driver of the GMC truck.

On July 13th, 2017 at 9:00 pm, Chase

RCMP members were on patrol on Shuswap Avenue in Chase when they noted a red Hyundai Accent with improper registration. A traffic stop was conducted. The 46 year old male driver from Chase was found to be driving while impaired by alcohol. He was issued a 90 day Immediate Roadside Suspension and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

OTHER: The Chase RCMP has received several reports of cigarette butts being thrown from the windows of moving vehicles.

Throwing a lit cigarette from the window of a vehicle could result in a $575.00 fine pursuant to the Wildfire Act.

Hi Folks! Hope you are all having a fantastic Summer despite the smoky skies that have been blocking our sunshine. We have missed all our amazing customers over the course of the Summer so far, but are enjoying our break. Kelly and I finally made it official last weekend, and got married! So now that all the planning there has subsided we are able to get back to focusing on the business end of things a little bit!

We wanted to let you all know that our little team from Chase, BC did a fantastic job at the National C h a mpi on s h ip s in Winnipeg, Manitoba a couple of weekends ago!

Team BC made up of Norm and Flo Flynn, Dennis and Diane Youchezin, and Harold Wells ended up placing 7th in the province (which for a group of mainly first year bowlers, is impressive!)

Although this amazing group of people

didn’t come home with a medal, from what I heard, they had more fun that anyone. Representatives of Bowl Canada emailed us to let us know what an excellent group of people we had representing our centre. Congratulations on your first ever National experience.

We are so proud of all of you!

The Vulnerable in our Midst

I agree with Hubert Humphrey, Pearl S. Buck, and Jimmy Carter. At various times, they have alluded to the fact that the measure of a society and the moral test of government are found in the treatment of the most vulnerable in our midst. This premise immediately comes to mind as I listen to news items about the missing women in British Columbia and elsewhere, the pervasive racism, the plight of many First Nations peoples in Canada, those among us ‘working the streets,’ the mentally ill who commit appalling crimes, and children subjected to gross misguidance by parents who place them in dangerous situations.

Although the long-needed enquiry into the missing and murdered is underway, the absence of widespread outrage at the loss of so many girls and women in Canada and their seemingly less than diligent, though difficult, investigations is inexplicable.

And more than troubling is the lack of understanding about the intergenerational damage inflicted upon First Nations peoples, the dearth of knowledge concerning their culture, history, and customs by a large percentage of Canadians, along with the failure to recognize that cradle to grave socialism, underfunded education, and the restriction and isolation of reserves can never work.

The very mixed messages contained in a 2014 Federal bill dealing with prostitution will do nothing to eliminate this oldest of professions, nor will it protect the women and men active in such business. There will be more victims, more missing, more pain. Liberal federal justice minister, Jody Wilson-Raybould, recently stated that her government is committed to replacing this flawed legislation and that a comprehensive review of it will be conducted which is open and inclusive.

To that I would add that I have lived in a major European capital where sex trade workers are safe, monitored, housed, and have rights. It’s time Canada got its head out of the sand.

I recall when those with mental or

emotional disorders were protected from themselves and restrained from hurting others. There were hospitals for them.

And I remember thinking when many of those hospitals were closed, “Where will the patients go? – who will look out for them? – who will monitor their condition?” The answer is revealed in their deaths in jails and by their own hand, and in the random murders, abductions, and the havoc wreaked on our streets and in our neighbourhoods.

Something is terribly wrong with this picture.

Beyond children who grow up almost by accident, avoiding the perils placed in their paths by negligent or compromised parents, there exist situations involving young people that are almost beyond comprehension, beyond belief in their insidious and ugly unfolding.

Lately, newscasts have been rife with arguments for and against the compensation of a young man, a Canadian, who as a child was taken to a dangerous part of the world by radical parents, stationed in a theatre of war as a teen-ager, subsequently bombed, buried under rubble, and seriously wounded.

This was then followed by accusations and charges without evidence, ruthless incarceration, torture, and abandonment by the Canadian government of the day which also turned information about him over to the (paranoid) USA authorities. And if that wasn`t enough harm, this mess eventually resulted in a forced confession from the lad in order to escape the grip of his jailers and be returned to Canada, where his release on bail was blocked for years in the courts, again by the government in this country at that time, the same government which for years had fought a Canadian federal court ruling that it press for his return from notorious Guantanamo Prison.

Judicial authorities ultimately ruled his rights had been grievously violated.

Indeed! The national desertion, his many lost years, the physical abuse, the mental and emotional trauma, his ongoing

recurrent nightmares can never be erased or ameliorated with money. His family failed him. Canada failed him. As in previous cases of rights violations and unfounded or erroneous charges, Canada had to pay. And even now, the hell on earth he has endured is not yet over.

Such injustice must never happen again!

This country can do better caring for the vulnerable. We must do better.

Provincial and federal representatives need to be told this. The status quo no longer cuts it.

Robert Clark “Bob” Seger is an American singer-songwriter, guitarist and pianist. A roots rocker with a classic raspy, shouting voice, Seger wrote and recorded songs that deal with love, women and bluecollar themes and is an exemplar of heartland rock.

Seger has recorded many hits, including “Night Moves”, “Turn the Page”, “Still the Same”, “We’ve Got Tonight”, “Against the Wind”, “You’ll Accomp’ny Me”, “Shame on the Moon”, “Like a Rock”, and “Shakedown”, which was written for Beverly Hills Cop II.
