Saturday June 10th, graduates of the Stselxméms r Secwépemc language proficiency certificate and diploma programs were honoured in the presence of their loved ones, staff, faculty, community members, and Elders. We were proud to have Dr. Kathryn Michel, Dr. Ron Ignace, the Commissioner of Indigenous Languages, Joan Greyeyes,

Director of the Office of Indigenous Languages and three respected Elders, Anna Michel, Lucy Williams and Lawrence Michel grace the stage to congratulate our Graduates. Three graduating classes, spanning from 2020 to 2023 were able to join together to celebrate completion of their one and two year intensive Simon Fraser University language proficiency programs. Pump Track Ready to Ride!

It’s ready! Chase Youth Action Committee is excited to share that our most recent project is complete and ready to ride! This spring Youth Action teamed up with a dedicated group of volunteers to construct a small pump track to help young mountain bikers gain skill and experience.

A pump track is a closed loop of rollers and banked turns allowing riders to propel themselves simply by ‘pumping’ instead of pedaling, teaching riders how to interact with various downhill terrain.

While we await placement of signage and a garbage can from the Village, the track is open from dawn till dusk and is located behind Art Holding Memorial Arena, along school field.

Youth Action is grateful for the overwhelming support of the residents and business of the village of Chase, as well as support from mayor, council, and

administration of the Village of Chase. To all those who gave financially to support this project, thank you!

Chase Youth Action would like to particularly thank the businesses that gave significant donations that made this project a reality. A deep thank you to Levi’s Yard Services, Team Equipment, Just Ask Rentals, Ken Carlin Trucking, CIF Construction and Home Hardware. Because of the amazing volunteer support and the support of Chase’s business community, we were able to complete this project significantly under budget!

With this project complete, Youth Action is continuing to work to extend our mountain biking infrastructure here in Chase to provide opportunities for healthy, active, and social activities for the youth of Chase.

Obituary Richard Waugh

March 22, 1950-July 6, 2023

With great sadness the family announces the passing of Richard Waugh (March 22, 1950-July 6, 2023). Richard was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and a cherished community member. He will be dearly missed by his wife, Judith Waugh, his sister Beverley Kissinger (Gord), his children Deanna Kaunonen (Ari), Tresa Marshall (David), Ladona Pinder (Clifton) and his stepsons Mark Lans (Bernice) and Jason Lans. Richard was a beloved grandfather to Cody, Seana, Ainsley, Delaney, Riley (Laura), Braedan (Kelsey), Mateja (Bryan), Aurora, Yuna, Ethan and Erika. He was also a proud great grandfather to Sophia, Chloe, Abigail, Elyna, Raye and Emmett. Richard was predeceased by his father, William Waugh and mother Doris Gleeson, his stepfather, Harry Gleeson and his brother, David Waugh.

A celebration of life will be held on July 24 at 3pm at the Adams Lake Gym, located at 6349 Chief Jules Drive, Chase BC followed by a feast. Obituary Smith, Jacqueline Elizabeth “Betty” 1937 - 2023

Jacqueline Elizabeth Smith, affectionately known as Betty, peacefully passed away on the morning of July 2, 2023 in Salmon Arm, BC, at the age of 85. Surrounded by her loved ones, she leaves behind an indelible mark on the lives of those who had the privilege of knowing her, and her memory will forever be cherished.

Betty, born on September 8, 1937, to Nora and Jack Robillard, spent the majority of her life in the Chase area. She married Harold K. Smith, fondly known as Butch, and together they raised three sons.

A beloved figure in the lives of many, Betty was not only a cherished mother but also an adored aunt, grandmother, and friend. This loss of a mother is an immeasurably sad day for her sons. Betty’s passing has left a void in all our hearts. Her character was marked by her zest for life and love for her family.

Betty will be deeply missed by her two oldest sons, D’Arcy and Ryan. She was predeceased by her youngest son, Daryl, and her loving husband Butch. Betty is also survived by her daughter-in-laws Tina and Kathy, as well as her grandchildren Shawn, Candice, Jerame, Tasha, Helayn, and Jack. Additionally, she leaves behind numerous great-grandchildren, her two surviving sisters Ticky and Teri, and many nieces and nephews who will dearly miss her.

The family would like to sincerely thank the staff on the Ortega floor at Mt Ida Mews retirement home in Salmon Arm.

Known for her kindness, generosity, and infectious laughter, Betty touched the lives of many, she will be deeply missed. May she find eternal peace.

Secwépemc language education

Canada’s Indigenous Languages Commissioner, Dr. Ron Ignace also addressed the Graduates and guests in both Secwepemctsin and English. He shared the words “I’m honoured here to witness this great ceremony with the help of your Elders to breathe life and to strengthen our languages and stand them up on the rightful place on our land. So that going forward, that our people will have our languages in their heart and our children will have our languages on their lips.”

Dr. Kathryn Michel shared words for the grads in Secwepemctsin and English. Speaking about Secwepemctsin learning she said “it’s a gift that keeps on giving”. I get so much from it and I know all of you that are working hard on your language know that it’s something that brings joy, brings perspective, and brings your dreams. The language really gets us understanding our Secwepemc way of life and the gifts of our ancestors unfolds for us. All of our students here have taken a leap of faith they have been challenged and they’ve kept going, I really admire their perseverance.

Each year’s cohort was represented by a Valedictorian. The 2020 cohort’s Valedictorian was Ada Jules, who is also a recent Bachelor of Education graduate. She presented her entire Valedictorian speech

in Secwepemctsin. She thanked her cohort for their support throughout her language learning and expressed that they had all become family through their language journey together.

The 2023 Diploma cohort’s Valedictorian was Denise Sellers. When she spoke of her learning experience she said “Heartfelt thanks to all the people who got us here, namely the Elders, for all their patience and understanding.” Denise credited the Elders for bringing her constant motivation to do better and to be better.

The 2023 Certificate cohort’s Valedictorian was Candice Day. Candice spoke of the multigenerational aspect of the third cohort. She noted that her group spans approximately 53 years, give or take, three dialects, and seven communities across Secwepemculecw. She spoke to her cohort, saying, “We all bring different gifts and strengths that we support one another with”.

During the ceremony each graduating class had recipients of the Joe Stanley Cicwelst Michel Language Achievement Award.

We were incredibly excited and proud to honour our future knowledge keepers in this way.

The Village of Chase is inviting the submission of applications for the contracted position of a part-time Bylaw Enforcement Officer.

Under the direction of the Director of Corporate Services, the contractor Bylaw Enforcement Officer is required to:

• Attend to and investigates complaints of alleged municipal bylaw infractions

• Speak with business owners/operators regarding business licensing requirements

• Issue notices and letters of infraction

• Issue infraction tickets

• Provide information either verbally or in writing to persuade individuals to comply with the Village’s bylaws

• Respond to public enquires while in the field

• Liaise with the Fire Chief and local RCMP on occasion

• Attend court or other adjudication with the Director of Corporate Operations proceedings to provide evidence relating to unresolved infractions

The Contractor is required to provide his/ her own cell phone, his/her own vehicle, log book, invoicing forms and all other documents required to operate as a contractor to the Village of Chase.
