Crisis in ambulance service extends into rural B.C. Press Release from BC Rural Health Network

The British Columbia Rural Health Network (BCRHN) wishes to make it known that the current crisis in BC Ambulance Service under the authority of BC Emergency Health Services is not just an urban phenomenon but also a rural one, where vast distances travelled for emergency and tertiary care, transfers, and a myriad of other duties on the front line of health services affect access to emergency health services. Rural citizens and visitors alike are at a greater risk to life and limb every day that this crisis continues, and is widening the cracks of the urban/rural divide in the delivery of health care. The extraordinary strain being put on emergency medical technicians (EMT) is in some cases having tragic effects on

the individuals, their families and their communities. The model is flawed and the results include long serving and highly qualified personnel leaving British Columbia to serve in a jurisdiction that includes an opportunity for a livable wage. “We are receiving reports of people being told that there is no ambulance available, and that they will have to drive to a hospital more than one (1) hour away”, said Edward Staples, Chair of the BCRHN. He continued, “There appears to be an urban bias in the media to cover the easy stories, when at the same time the populations in resource communities are put at exceptional peril.”

$9.3 Million for Wildlife, Fish and Habitat Including Steelhead in Southern B.C. For 40 years, the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation (HCTF) has helped fund conservation groups, government branches, Indigenous Nations, and local communities to implement projects that protect B.C.’s wildlife, freshwater fish, and the habitats they need to survive and thrive. This year, HCTF has awarded $9.3 million in funding for 175 individual conservation projects across British Columbia. HCTF’s CEO Dan Buffett is pleased to report that the 2021/22 grant season represents the Foundation’s highest record annual investment and reflects the financial contributions and hard work of many British Columbians that fund and implement these projects. To date, HCTF has funded 3,230 conservation projects and granted over $195 million in funds across the length and breadth of this ecologically diverse province. One such project is the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources’ Interior Fraser Wild Steelhead Conservation program. The program, which received $98,677 in funding, monitors the abundance, productivity,

and ongoing conservation status of wild steelhead populations, including the Thompson and Chilcotin populations. This freshwater salmonid species is of exceptional importance to First Nations peoples, anglers, local communities, and conservationists. The data collected through the project will help to inform provincial, federal and First Nations fisheries management plans and conservation management. “Steelhead are highly migratory, like salmon, which creates management challenges involving multiple agencies; challenges that are well-served by understanding the biology of these fish, the status of the populations, and the factors affecting the populations,” said project lead Robert Bison. “With HCTF’s support, we have been able to provide evidence and insights into factors affecting southern B.C. steelhead populations for which there is conservation concern.” Other HCTF funded projects taking place in the Thompson-Nicola and Cariboo regions include: • $135,519 in funds to assist the St'át'imc

Government to monitor the critically endangered Stein/Nahatlatch grizzly bear population. Research will help inform species recovery plans for both the Province and Indigenous groups. • $45,051 to support invasive plant management and land rehabilitation at Turtle Valley Farm and Toad Hollow near Chase, B.C. • $40,250 to monitor Mid-Fraser Sturgeon near Lillooet, B.C. Examining the distribution, population density and health of sturgeon population will inform federal government assessments and the management of the recreational fishery. • $112,071 for a Steelhead population assessment along the Dean River which hosts one of the world's most popular steelhead sport fisheries. • $22,936 for a study assessing the density and population health of cougar in the Cariboo region. This project will involve a citizen science component and will rely on stakeholders to help estimate cougar populations.

Threat of Invasive Mussels Continues – Province and others support monitoring of Columbia Shuswap Lakes Invasive zebra and quagga mussels have been unintentionally introduced into many water bodies in eastern Canada, but as of yet, are not known in Canada west of Manitoba. Unfortunately, invasive mussels are excellent hitchhikers. An adult mussel can firmly attach to watercraft and gear, survive for long periods out of water and potentially infest a new waterbody in BC. Larval mussels are so tiny they can easily go undetected in small amounts of water. Provincial Watercraft Inspection Stations are taking proactive measures to prevent the spread of these damaging organisms by inspecting and when necessary decontaminating watercraft

that could be transporting these invasive mussels. Watercraft inspection stations are operational at major border crossings into BC, and all watercraft, including paddleboards and canoes, must stop to be inspected. In addition to operating the watercraft inspection stations the BC Government’s Invasive Mussel Defence Program oversees the invasive mussel lake monitoring program to sample priority waterbodies for invasive zebra and quagga mussels. Under this program, lakes and rivers in the Columbia Shuswap region are monitored by the Columbia Shuswap Invasive Species Society (CSISS). This

year CSISS will be monitoring 13 lakes and rivers monthly, with higher priority waterbodies monitored bi-weekly. Continued on page 9....

Quagga Mussels

“We sample plankton with a very fine mesh net in order to detect any microscopic larvae present in the water column, and we install artificial substrates in the lake to monitor for adult mussels,” said Sue Davies-McGill of CSISS. DaviesMcGill and her colleagues’ sample across the Columbia Shuswap region from the Kinbasket Reservoir in the east, to Adams Lake and the Little Shuswap Lake in the west. CSISS could not carry out this important work without the support of the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and the Shuswap Watershed

Council. As well, many private individuals and marina operators help out by allowing CSISS to sample from their docks. BC Parks facilitates CSISS sampling at the Cinnemousun Narrows on Shuswap Lake by allowing CSISS staff to accompany wardens on their rounds. “I spend my days looking diligently for something I hope I never find,” says Davies-McGill. “I talk to lots of boaters who are interested in what I’m doing, and I always tell them to stop at inspection stations when entering BC,

and also to Clean, Drain, and Dry their boat if they are moving it from one lake or river to another. That is the very best way to prevent the spread of most aquatic invasive species, and prevention is so much better because there is no known cure for invasive mussels,” she says. Suspected invasive mussels should be reported to the Conservation Officer Service Report All Poachers and Polluters (RAPP) line at 1 877 952-7277.

Anne Patricia East

Chase's Community Paper

since 1996

230-320-3050 info@chasesunflower.ca www.ChaseSunflower.ca

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Anne East (nee Coates, formerly Phare) of Chase BC. Anne passed away peacefully at home with family by her side after battling lung cancer with her usual tenacity. Loving wife of Allan East since 1979 (deceased June 14, 2021) she said “we had 41 good years” of dancing, camping, fishing, parties and Chase Legion gatherings with friends and family. With special memories of “The Momich” on Adams Lake together. Marriage to Al created a big combined family. Anne is survived by children; Gord Phare (Diane), Clayton Phare (Connie), April Haussmann (nee Phare) (Dave), Kelly Phare (Dawn), and Jim East (Colleen), Diane Eaton (nee East) (Roger) Rosanne Poirier (nee East) (Rob), Heather East and Cindy East. 18 Grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Siblings; Lois, Robert, Ray and Dinah. Predeceased by her parents Len and Gladys Coates and sister Linda. Born in Newbury Ontario and raised in Gibsons BC, Anne was an adventurous, hard worker with endless amounts of energy. She ventured to Vancouver at 16 to work and never looked back. Many years were spent living in Mission BC. She worked at Overwaitea Foods for 18 years before she and Al moved to Chase in mid 1980's where she eventually worked for Canada Post before retiring. Anne always set out to make her community a better place to live and promote well-being. She was a member of the Royal Purple (Elks), Hatzic Ratepayers, softball player and ball coach in Mission. In Chase she was presented a Life Membership of the Creekside Seniors Centre for her years of dedication as volunteer leader of exercise classes (until she was 81). Doing this touched on three favourite things; exercise, helping people and coffee with friends. Anne was a well loved and respected member of the Chase Legion and Chase Legion Ladies Auxiliary (LA) and will be missed by all. She joined in 1989 proudly receiving her 30 year pin and many medals. Anne held the position of LA President in 1991, 1992 and 2006, Vice President in 1994 and 2010. As Past President she served as Honors and Awards Officer and Ways and Means Officer (2002-2005). She never hesitated when help was needed “phone Anne”. She was a great cook and dedicated countless hours to catering weddings, birthdays, memorials and Legion fundraisers and events. A competitor and card player Anne loved Canasta and ladies darts. However her special game was Crib. She competed in the BC Senior Summer Games many times, bringing home the gold medal once and placing 3rd in the Canadian National's in 2015. Many of her grand children's most vivid memories are “crib games with Grandma E”. Anne she often spoke of fun times and special friendships made through work, volunteering, Red Hat Society and trips (many trips!) to Reno. She and Al had a prolific garden and she lined her larder with 1000's of Mason jars in her lifetime (pickled beets YUM!). She was an awesome, cool Mom whose house was always open. A nofuss gal she just let her kids get-on with life knowing she was only a phone call away. Celebration of life for both Anne and Al will be held on August 28, 2021 at the Chase Legion. Time will be announced later.
