CornStock Coming Up Soon
C
submitted by Brock Endean
hase CornStock was established to highlight all the great talents and products that our area has to offer while making use of Chase´s most beautiful assets, the Joyce Dunn Theatre and Little Shuswap Lake. From fresh produce and baking, to unique crafts and food trucks, the CornField Market is a vibrant part of the annual festival and is sure to have something for everyone. Another unique feature of the CornField Market is the ability for local groups, classes, and leagues to set up information
booths for free. CornStock serves as a great opportunity to showcase your organization, provide demonstrations, answer questions, and sign up new members or players. Do you have a product or service for youth? Then perhaps you are interested in joining other youth oriented organizations and businesses by hosting an activity in the Interior Savings Little Kernels Zone where the youngest CornStockers make crafts, play games, and get their faces painted. year Brooke and Linda Kynoch choose an entity that is financially rewarded as a result of their generosity. This year two events were held in the parking lot, a beef on the bun lunch followed by a hot dog “tube steak boogie” barbeque. There are also hidden sources of revenue throughout the store that add to the grand total. Crime in Chase
There are presumably many more incidents that haven’t been reported to RCMP. Most of these vehicular thefts were from unlocked cars and trucks. No tool or smashed windows were involved in the majority of them, so rolling up the windows would be a good first step. “It’s basic crime prevention, take your valuables out and lock your vehicle. But that doesn’t solve the issue that somebody out there is looking for the opportunity to steal” said Heebner. “At this point there is no way to tell if how many people are involved. What we really need are tips from the public,” said Heebner. If you have been a victim of crime, consider reporting it because the RCMP uses stats to get an accurate picture of what’s happening out there.

You suffered much, you murmered not, we watched you day by day. We cried and prayed that your dear life would not be taken away. We love you & we miss you Dad & Papa. The year may wipe out many things. But this they’ll wipe out never. The memories of the happy days When we were all together I think of you in silence. BOOK REVIEW by Annelise Grube-Cavers
The Tao of Pooh by Benjamin Hoff
Feeling a little overwhelmed? Maybe you’ll relate to the Bisy Backson; the busy creature that rushes around, trying to fulfill some unknown goal, some unattainable obejctive. It’s just one problematic aspect of modern life that Benjamin writes about using the friendly characters from Winnie the Pooh to illustrate life’s challenges and riches. The frame he uses are the
invaluable teachings from ancient Chinese philosophers including Laotse and Chang-tse. Go with the flow, and keep things simple are two of the messages that I continuously take from this little book when I pick it up again and again.

Billets needed for Heat players As the seasonal residents and tourists leave the Shuswap, the population exodus is offset a tiny bit by the influx of up to 23 hockey players who’ve made the cut to be a part of the Chase Heat junior hockey team. The young men, within the age range of 16-20, come from all areas of BC and beyond to play hockey and for many of them, to experience life away from home for the first time. “They have never had to adjust and become a part of other families and to a completely foreign environment with different rules and settings,” said Coach Brad Fox. Through a matchmaking-like process they are placed in the most suitable home for them by billet coordinator, Janice Winfield. “We present the family and players family with detailed paperwork of questions which focus on compatibility between player and billet family,” explained Fox. Every season, Chase residents decide to take the plunge and welcome one or more of these athletes into their homes.
by Kelsey Snelgrove Dave Owen’s family hosted players for the last 2 seasons and will be doing it again this year. “It seemed like a worthwhile way to give back to the community and the need for billets was desperate, so we thought we’d give it a try and see how it goes... and it worked exceptionally well,” said Own. He stressed laying down guidelines and conditions at the beginning of the experience, and suggested that although everyone must make some compromises ultimately the player must fit into the flow of the family’s life. Former Heat player Kaleb Boyle, was appreciative of the “awesome” hosts he had during his tenure in Chase. “We went on hikes together, had dinner together, we went skating with their kids. It becomes your normal life”, said Boyle. The hockey players will be required to cook a meal for the family twice per month this season, which is a great bonding opportunity in any household. “We have worked very hard to recruit solid character young men who

understand the importance of respect and communication to your billet family. The communication is the foundation in a billet home,” said Fox. Still, the hockey season stretches from September – March, which is can be a long 7 months if the player is just not fitting in with your family. This is why players don’t always necessarily stay in one home for the full season. Neither player nor family is stuck in a doomed situation and there is always a way to work it out. There are many different benefits associated with billeting, including a ties to the team. “As a billet family we get a season pass, which is great for me. You follow the team and get really connected with it. During hockey season, I become a rabid Chase Heat fan”, said Owen.
