onkey ambassadors will be out to meet and greet you as the Turtle Valley Donkey Refuge kicks off their Donkey Day Fundraiser on July 27, 2019 from 10am-3pm. This special event has been dormant for a few years while the Refuge focused on other special events for their members and supporters. 2019 marks the first time in 3 years that the Refuge will celebrate ‘Donkey Day’! The Donkey Refuge is hosting their ‘Donkey Day Fundraiser 2019’ to celebrate 20 years of Donkey Rescue. Donkey Day will feature special donkey ambassador barn areas, kids craft area for making donkey ear hats, and a food concession with nachos. The Refuge’s 2019 t-shirts and one of a kind donkey related items are featured in the Donkey Shoppe, and will be available throughout the event.
By keeping admission low at $5.00 per person for this special event, Donkey Refuge Founder Shirley Mainprize wants to make sure “everyone gets a chance to visit with our wonderful donkeys and experience their magic, while helping support our mission to provide a safe and permanent home for neglected, abused or unwanted donkeys.” The event, which is a “relaxing, fun and enjoyable day in the country for all ages”, helps raise support and awareness for the Donkeys by collecting donations for Hay, Sponsorships for Ambassador Donkeys, and Memberships to the Refuge. Donations are tax-deductible; the Refuge is a Registered Charity. FMI: Shirley Mainprize – donkeyrefuge@ gmail.com/250.679.2778; the Refuge is located at 7877 Skimikin Rd, Chase, BC.

Library Easy For Visitors to Use submitted by Chase Library
Chase is a beautiful holiday destination spot with the lake, the weather, family, the great farmer's markets in our area and so many other reasons. Did you know...a few years ago, the provincial government wanted people to be able to walk into a public library across BC and be able to use the services available, so they created a BC One Card library program. It is one of our little hidden treasures. Anyone with a library card in good standing from another library, may become a BC One Card patron and borrow materials. Another great aspect is the ability to return the items you borrow from here to any other public library
within BC. The same also applies if you are a library member of the TNRL, you can become a BC One Card patron at any library you visit within BC. Chase Library is really unique because we are the last library heading East in the TNRL and we share quite a few patrons with our neighbouring Okanagan Regional Library in Sorrento. So, if you happen to be visiting Chase this summer, please stop by the library, we will set you up, so you can sign out materials, receive your stickers for the Summer Reading Club and welcome you to the community. Cheers and happy safe summer days to you.

The first of July starts a new fiscal year for the Lions Club annually. On the 25th of June, we installed our new officers, and gave out some awards. The Melvin Jones Fellowship is the highest honor a Lion can receive. It was awarded to Harry Fast, whom is one of our only two remaining original charter members (52 years of service). A well deserved award to a wonderful, very dedicated man. Lion Marvin Joelson, put in many hours of tinkering with the old 1923 Franklin, and after many years of storage in the museum, it was entered in the Canada Day parade, ran beautifully, and carried 3 of our 5 Melvin Jones fellows in it. You will see the Lions Club down at the beach every Tuesday night, for the Music on the Lake Series cooking up burgers, hotdogs, fries, and our fabulous
poutine. Come visit us weekly. We are a fun loving group, we love our community and enjoy serving, and supporting this area. Approximately 90% of all funds raised, stay right here, locally, supporting the people who support us. If you are interested in helping out as a volunteer, or in becoming a member, just let us know. New members and volunteers are always welcomed. New people, bring new fresh ideas. Our newly elected officials for this year are: President: Kevin Watt, Secretary: Karen Bassett, Treasurer: Joanne Watt, Director: Marvin Joelson. Anyone of us, would be happy to get to know you. We can be reached at 250-679-8470 or email at chaselions67@gmail.com

Like many other organizations in Chase, the Visitor Centre unfortunately did not receive Summer Student Funding this year, and as a result, we will be operating on reduced hours throughout the summer. We are looking for volunteers to help us keep the centre open as much as possible to serve guests to the community. The Visitor Information Centre is seeking volunteers for shifts from 10am to 12pm, Wednesdays to Saturdays throughout the summer.
Primary duties include answering inquiries, directing visitors to services and amenities in town, and assisting with maintaining the garden in front of the building. Annette Eliza Jane Strauch August 14, 1936 - May 1, 2019
Annette passed peacefully in her sleep at Mt. Ida Mews where she spent her last two years. Although Mom’s frail little body gave out, her mind was sharp, never loosing her sense of humour. She met her husband Clarence and married September 5, 1953. In 1954, they welcomed their son Brian (Betty), 1956 daughter Beverley (Rick Iglesias) and 1961 daughter Lorna (Jim Douglas). In 1958 with two small children, they made the journey to the Chase Creek Valley where they homesteaded a quarter section of land, the valley they would never leave. Mom was a fabulous cook, well known for her apple pies and she marvelled people with her home canning. The coffee pot was always on and no one left the table without a homemade goodie. She worked 25 years for Skimikin Nursery, but a dedicated “farmer’s wife” was her calling. Dinner was always on the table and there was always an extra chair in case someone stopped by unexpectedly. In 1965 at the tender age of 28, mom faced the challenge of breast cancer and a life threatening operation. She spent 3 months receiving cobalt treatments in Vancouver, but as she said, “She fought to live for her young children”. A 54 year survivor, she was the last BC breast cancer survivor from 1965. The word “Cancer” took its toll on mom and in later years anxiety crept in making it difficult for her to carry on. When she lost her lifelong spouse Clarence in 2011, she never returned to the Chase Creek Valley. She often mentioned “life was lonely” and as she spent her last 3 years in a wheel chair, she looked forward to Brian bringing “her” bus (as she would call it) to go on day excursions. Family was her everything, but if she received a visit from anyone who would take the time to come see her, she was elated. Survived by 3 children, 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. As requested by Mom, there will be no funeral services, her ashes be spread on the family 7 acres beside her husband. Rest in peace mom, you are no longer in pain. Share condolences and memories of Annette through her obituary at www.fischersfuneralservices.com
