“Pulling Together” Canoe Journey —Reliving History and Enhancing Today By Carolyn Parks-Mintz, Author, Journalist & Freelance Writer

T

he canoe is an ancient mode of travel, one that provides the maximum amount of boat through using a minimum of material—and one that especially facilitates waterway exploration, not only in British Columbia, but across Canada. Canoeing requires unity and teamwork, as well as providing strength training. Founded in 1997 as the “Vision Quest Journey” by then RCMP Staff Sergeant Ed Hill, as a means of improving

police relations with First Nations communities, subsequent “Pulling Together” initiatives over the last two decades have adhered to and expanded upon its original goal. The vision of the Pulling Together Canoe Society is to lead the way in elimination of prejudice and stereotypes, within the core values of fun, unity, respect, cultural diversity, and empathy. Pulling Together Canoe Journey This year’s event—the first in two years due to the COVID pandemic—was held from July 12 to 20 and comprised a 250-kilometre route in total, jointly hosted by the Splatsin, Adams Lake, and Simpcw bands. Over 400 paddlers, ground crew, and volunteers were involved in the project’s organization and implementation throughout Secwepemculecw territory. Paddlers, both First Nations and nonIndigenous, travelled distances of 25 to 55 kilometres on waterways each day— an undertaking of effort, dedication, and commitment. Welcome ceremonies, dinners, entertainment, and awards were also part of the 2022 Pulling Together Journey. As Adams Lake Acting Chief and Councillor Cory Sampson says, “The event represents inclusion, bringing us and non-First Nations people together— communities working jointly in

reconciliation. It also instills a sense of pride in all those taking part.” “We told stories on the water today,” he goes on, “showed a pictograph, and sang songs, as a means of connecting the non-Indigenous participants to our community—another way to learn about First Nations culture and heritage.” Onshore crowds enthusiastically welcomed paddlers in over a dozen canoes at the Adams Lake community on July 15, with drumming, congratulations, and much picture taking. “Pulling Together” was indeed a celebratory, intercommunity event. As the Society’s Mission Statement states, “Recognizing the past by Pulling Together to enhance understanding between public service agencies and Aboriginal Peoples, by canoeing the traditional highway, strengthening our future relations.” Well done!

An Amazing Musical at Caravan Farm Theatre Review by Carolyn Parks-Mintz Author, Journalist & Freelance Writer

When’s the last time you saw a play performed by talented actors, singers, musicians, and dancers—as well as by six welltrained, beautiful Percheron draft horses ?! — a breed known for its intelligence as well as its willingness to work — both clearly demonstrated in “BlackHorse—A Horse Opera” being staged at Caravan Farm Theatre, near Armstrong, BC, from July 12th to August 7th. Established in 1978, the C a r av a n organization is a professional outdoor theatre company based on an 80-acre farm in North Okanagan, within the unceded territories of the Secwepemc and Syilx First Nations, and is a world leader in large-scale outdoor theatre production— with its mandate being to promote interest in the study and appreciation of the arts, literature, theatre, and music in particular, by large and diverse audiences. My husband and I took in its current excellent creative endeavour recently, and enjoyed it immensely, along with the enthusiastic packed house that also attended. Set in lush farmland, the theatre company has been beyond innovative in the development of its performance site—new and rustic amenities abound, creating form and function. One example is the performance structure: it overlooks surrounding fields, trees, sky, and topography, is open-air under a huge roof with suspended lighting fashioned from wagon wheels, and very much resembles a barn while housing stage, acoustics, theatre lighting, orchestra pit, and seating.

The production is not actually an “opera,” as the music is contemporary while weaving the plot through song and dialogue—a hybrid of musical theatre and top-notch horse action. Caravan’s Artistic Director, Estelle Shook, and Poet, Playwright, and Composer Linz Kenyon have brilliantly put together the story of a couple raising their family and pursuing d r e a m s backdropped by socioeconomic forces, which conspire to create problems. Humour and emotion combine to make the play come very much alive. ‘Blackhorse’ is the third of the theatre’s horse operas and reflects the skilled design and innovation that make it unique. In addition to performing choreographed moves and patterns, under the guidance of experienced female Teamsters, the six equine cast members also managed large props and scene furniture on mini-stages, maneuvering them onto the groomed dirt stage floor with skill and precision— and removing them later. Talk about ingenuity! The original music and songs, the cast and crew, the accomplished musicians in the orchestra pit, the true-tolife story, and the marvelous huge black horses made for an evening of superb entertainment in a lovely setting. Artistic Director Shook stated, “This is our love letter to the community.” Well, it’s reciprocal. The standing ovation at the play’s end said it all! Bravo! Music Events in Memorial Park during August by Carolyn Parks Mintz Author, Journalist, & Freelance Writer

Music on the Lake, organized by the Chase & District Festival Society at Chase’s lakeside Memorial Park, is pleased to welcome the following gifted entertainers and performers on Tuesday evenings (7:00 pm start) during the month of August: August 2 King of Foxes produces bewitching Indie rock that’s both sharp-witted and easylistening. Fronted by singer-songwriter Olivia Street, the band’s catchy tunes have led them to share the stage with The Barenaked Ladies, The Sam Roberts Band, and Mother Mother, as well as to the production of two critically acclaimed albums. August 9 The Liz Blair Project brings personality and high energy to the stage through its band members and singer, songwriter and recording artist Liz Blair, as she channels the influences of soul and blues through her considerable and unique talent and flair. August 16 “Cornstock” Sponsored by Interior Savings 6:00 pm - Tanner Dawson, Canadian country recording artist and resident of Chase, who may be joined by a local guest musician, combines a vocal mix of rock, blues, funk and 90’s country to create a unique sound and dynamic performances with a little something for

everyone. 7:30 pm - Shattered Blue from Kamloops has established themselves as one of the premiere rock bands in BC’s interior, performing classic and modern favourites for enthusiastic audiences. They’re pleased to be back performing live music in Chase and are ready to rock the park. August 23 The internationally acclaimed and awardwinning music group, The Spiritual Warriors¸ create music inspired by the land and life in the coastal mountains of the Lilwat Nation, with a unique blend of Indigenous chants and contemporary roots, rock and reggae, performing many songs in their U’cwalmicwts language. Uplifting rhythms underline the beautiful vocal harmonizing sung bilingually. This unique band takes audiences on a cultural journey to the natural heartbeat of the Indigenous drum and the St’at’imc people. August 30 A new and innovative Kamloops group, The Daytime Highs, emerged from the dank and isolationist time of a pandemic, with solid bass lines, haunting piano, the sun and surf of electric guitar, the pounding drive of drums and powerhouse vocals—featuring reggae, phat funk, and disco, music guaranteed to fill dance halls and dance floors.

The largest Camelid Rescue Organization in North America is up against the clock to find a new home! The Llama Sanctuary, has been rescuing, re-homing and caring for llamas and alpacas in need for more than 17 years, with the last 5 years operating on about 50 acres of beautiful parkland near Chase, British Columbia. This dedicated sanctuary is typically caring for between 40 and 60 llamas, alpacas and guanaco on any given day. Foster homes are found for the majority of the animals that come to The Sanctuary, but the elderly, the sick and injured and those with undesirable behaviour remain forever in the care of The Llama Sanctuary. The Llama Sanctuary has been renting this beautiful space and was hoping to remain here long term. Unfortunately, the Great Universe has other plans and The Sanctuary was given very short notice to leave. The task of finding a suitable property, raising the funds to make a deposit, finding an investor to support the move and then relocating all the animals, the barns, buildings and equipment is huge. A new location has been found. The deposit of $60,000, to secure the property, was required by July 19th. Thankfully,

this deadline has been nudged to the 25th July, just a few days away now! A further $1.5million is then required to purchase the land and rebuild The Llama Sanctuary from scratch. Offers of support and donations have been pouring in and to date we have raised around $41,000. The telephone rings non-stop, we do our best to keep up with the deluge of emails and all the time we are ke e pi ng up with demands of the llamas and alpacas! The intention is to keep The Llama Sanctuary in the beautiful Shuswap region, which we have come to love. We still need more funds, not only to meet the deposit deadline, but then actually move The Sanctuary. We also have need of a new stock trailer, since our own developed a twisted chassis. If anyone has a 3 horse trailer they would like to donate, we would love you to bits! Crowdfund the new home: https:// fundrazr.com/822Va5 For eTransfer and other ways to donate or to learn more about the work of The Llama Sanctuary, visit: https:// llamasanctuary.com Follow on social media: https:// facebook.com/llamasanctuary email: support@llamasanctuary.com Tel: 250 679 8121

Why a Llama Sanctuary?

Llamas were introduced into Canada in the 1980’s and as an exotic species, were selling for up to $60,000 each. Popularity grew quickly and some people developed large herds of llamas. Twenty years later, the market was saturated and collapsed. Almost overnight, llamas dropped in value

to the point where they were either being given away to anyone who would take them or set free into the forest. The myth that llamas didn’t need any special care and would eat anything was passed around and the recipe for neglect was set. Continued on next page...

Llama Sanctuary History

The Llama Sanctuary has assisted in hundreds of situations right across Canada. Unexpected events show up in life: health, domestic, financial and other situations show up and people find themselves unable to care for their animals. Retiring them to The Llama Sanctuary enables llamas and their carers to stay in touch. More commonly however, llamas are released into the wild or they escape and venture off in search of a new source of food, only to find themselves in trouble with farmers, gardeners and even the police. On several occasions the RCMP has called The Llama Sanctuary to assist with llamas loose on the highway. And then there are those situations where the animals have been neglected or abused. A llama lying in a field for three days after an attack by a bear, was brought to the attention of The Sanctuary. For whatever reason, some people don’t know what to do or are afraid. Princess is now a permanent resident. Her wounds have healed, but with reduced mobility. Then there are those llamas who, usually through mishandling, have developed unacceptable or aggressive behaviour. The Llama Sanctuary takes them all and visitors get to experience the joy that llamas can bring into our lives, if we let them. Llamas are also peaceful and extremely therapeutic and The Sanctuary receives many visitors from care homes, from autistic support groups and other care organizations who benefit so much from just being surrounded by llamas. Your support can make such a difference, not just in the lives of the animals, but the people who find themselves in need of support and the many people who visit The Llama Sanctuary and take away a special healing moment.
