THE BILLET LIFE

written by Director of Hockey Operations / Head Coach, Brad Fox

On behalf of the Chase Heat hockey family, we would like to take the time to thank everyone in our community for the effort each and everyone put forth this past season to give our athletes an opportunity to continue to grow and develop as players but more importantly young men. No one felt the pressures this year more than our billet home during the pandemic. Every year we are so blessed and grateful to our billet families to provide our player families a sense of security knowing their son was safe in a lovely home life as a member of their family. This past year they took on a responsibility that was enormous. This took so much trust and courage every single day for the better part of 6 months to put your family at risk. Our billet families were so strong and caring but most certainly felt the strain. Our billet coordinator Lana Adamson worked endlessly on assuring we were doing everything to protect our billets throughout the year. Our players understood and took on the same responsibility that their decisions and discipline would have a significant impact on their billet family. Last year because of the circumstances we had six players and families committed to travel back and forth for the 7 months of development on and off the ice. Many days it was twice a day. One of the most special things about living in a small community like ours for the players is they get what we call the full junior experience. These kids coming here want to be a part of their billet family as the highlight of playing here. They want to have a billet brother or sister to be able to share the things that will impact their world in a positive way. The positive impact of player and billet family relationships is special but requires so many components to come together. THE REALITY & REWARDS To assume that opening up your home to a teenager as a family member is going to be a smooth transition right off the start is not realistic more times than not. A lot

of these young men are moving away for the first time. What we focus on doing in our process of recruiting players is to learn as much as possible about them and their families prior to committing to a player. Is this perfect? Of course not. Sometimes we simply cannot anticipate what we thought was a good recruit to find out the intangibles of the trivial things. One of the major hurdles is simply the maturing stage of these young men. It takes time to grow up and take on the responsibilities that come with this process. What I can tell you is our number one priority is that they have respect to others. They have a strong morale and value presence. We have accomplished this a majority of the time. Our Billet families along with Lana Adamson work closely together to ensure our lines of communication are consistent in working through the problems that arise throughout the 7 months of the hockey season. These kids want to experience having a billet brother and or sister to share with them that big brother relationship. Most of them come from having siblings in their household back home. They know coming here they are coming to be a part of a family and not a tenant in the household. For the families with young children in our community, this is an opportunity to give your children a special bond that lasts long after the year is completed. For those of you that have children that one day will pursue the exact same dreams of moving away into a billet situation, it simply becomes a pay it forward situation. We thank you for taking the time to review this article. We are currently looking to grow our billet families for the upcoming season. We would like to sit down with you and your family in a detailed interview to answer any questions you may have. My suggestion to those who want to research further leading into the billet rewards is to contact Lana (250-574-3681) and set up a conversation with our current billet families. They can tell you firsthand what the extended family experience has to offer your family.

News from First Nations THE SECWEPEMC PEOPLE The Secwepemc First Nation has lived in this territory for thousands of years. Archaeological evidence indicates at least 9,000 years of occupancy along local lakes and rivers. And the remains of pit houses near current reserves present a picture of the lives of their ancestors. Oral traditions continue to be passed on from generation to generation through stories, crafts, and their way of life. Secwepemc Elders describe the prudent resourceful livelihood of their people in the past as one based on fishing, hunting, trapping, and berry gathering, which helped previous generations to grow and prosper. The waterways and trail networks enabled vast travel tied to seasonal cycles. Their people’s intricate and effective social, cultural and political systems remained in place for millennia, until waves of traders, missionaries, settlers, and colonial administrators arrived.

ADAMS LAKE INDIAN BAND (ALIB) The Colony of British Columbia established

by Carolyn Parks Mintz, Author & Journalist the reserve system in the 1860’s. The ALIB has jurisdiction over the following IR (Indian Reserve) lands: Hustalen IR#1, Squaam IR#2, Toops IR#3, Sahhaltkum IR#4, Stequmwhulpa IR#5, Switsemalph (aka Glen Eden) IR#6, and Switsemalph IR#7. The ALIB Lands Department Mission Statement includes a Land Use Plan which ensures the development, administration, and preservation of ALIB lands, focussing on networking, expansion, strengthening and information-sharing to guarantee that the use and preservation of lands meet the needs of the ALIB membership. Election Results The July 5th Swearing-In Ceremony of the newly elected Chief and Council welcomed Chief Lynn Kenoras (Duck Chief), Brandy Chelsea, Joyce Kenoras (Switsemalph IR#6 Salmon Arm), Howard Norquist, Cory Sampson, and Shelley Witzky with drumming, prayers, honour songs and a community dinner.

The Class of 2021 Congratulations on a job well done are extended to the following ALIB 2021 graduates: Chase Secondary School – Damien Ignace, Jasmin John, Masin Netowaysin and Maxmus Young. The enjoyable social events, observing COVID precautions, were held at the reserves near Chase and Salmon Arm. N’we Jinan Programme ALIB youth, ages 11 and up, took part in producing a professional music video from July 21st to 24th, with the theme ‘Empower Your Voice.’ N’we Jinan programmes are designed and implemented by a team of passionate pedagogical, programming and logistics specialists at inPath, a non-profit organization that connects schools, communities and the creative sector to enable youth to carve out their own artistic pathway within a network of support. ALIB participants collaborated with a music producer, a videographer and professional musicians whose goals are to amplify the voices of Indigenous Youth and spark creative potential. The completed video will be posted on Facebook and at nwejinan.com. Health & Recreation UBC kinesiology graduate Tony Kenoras is encouraging ALIB members to develop a fitness plan, whether it be strengthening, conditioning, cardiovascular improvement or sports specific programming. Held at the Adams Lake Recreation Centre, exercise activities can be individual or group based, and all will be designed specifically for those taking part.

LITTLE SHUSWAP LAKE BAND (LSLB) The LSLB Quaaout Indian Reserve (IR) #1 with 347 members lies in the heart of Secwepemc territory on the shores of Little Shuswap Lake, and encompasses residential land, forests, and the beautiful Quaaout Lodge site as well as the Talking Rock Golf Club. Additional LSLB members reside at Chum Creek (IR#2), Meadow Creek (IR #3), Scotch k(IR#4), and North Bay (IR#5). As Chief (Kukpi7) Oliver Arnouse says, “To the people of this area, the land is known as Skwlax, which in the Shuswap language means ‘black bear.’ We invite you to experience the rich culture and hospitality of the Secwepemc people. Limited hunting on the reserve has preserved an abundance of wildlife, and the

flora and fauna are a photographer’s dream. Come visit us. Come stay with us. All we ask is that you treat the land with respect. It is our home for the short time we are on Earth, but it is the home of the Great Spirit for eternity.” LSLB Election Due to the ongoing COVID situation, it was decided to postpone the band’s election in accordance with Indigenous Services Canada guidelines. At present, the date set for election of Chief and Council is October 23, 2021. The Class of 2021 Congratulations are extended to the following successful 2021 graduates. As LSLB Councillor Wes Francois says, “Education is the key to success.” Chase Secondary School – Alex McBryan, Brianna Billy, Darian Jackson Neskonlith Education Centre – Taylor BillyNarcisse Red Deer/Golden – Danika McBryan Surrey, BC – Dysennia Perez-Francois Vancouver Community College – Ashley Bitz Thompson Rivers University – Dale Tomma Canadian Christian College – Jonah August Post-Pandemic Skwlax Wellness is working with Chief and Council, as well as other Departments, such as Education, to consult with the community and focus on a recovery plan for LSLB, with a view to being able to gather together again in the near future. Land Use Plan LSLB is in the process of developing a Land Use Plan for Quaaout IR#1, Chum Creek IR#2, and North Bay IR#5 Tappen. This undertaking will facilitate an understanding of what community members want for these lands in future, and will support decision-making for land usage, including residential, commercial and community purposes. The plan will identify areas for potential development and protection, advance LSLB’s path to self-determination, determine infrastructure requirements for new development, and assist with funding. Quaaout Lodge & Talking Rock Golf Club In addition to its fine dining and accommodation, the Lodge’s two-day Personal Wellness Shuswap Retreat includes a two-night stay in a lakeview suite, $100 dining credit, $100 spa credit, a cultural experience, two 18-

hole rounds of golf with power cart and practice range use, and complimentary use of lawn games and activity rentals. Add to these, special Retreat enhancements such as sweets, a tasty charcuterie board, wine, spa robes, firepit rental, or a one-hour golf lesson, and you have a mini vacation of pampering like no other. The world-class Talking Rock Golf Club has been the pride of the Little Shuswap Lake Band since its opening in August 2007. Golf vacation packages include one night of accommodation, 18 holes of golf, power cart, and practice range. The club’s Romance Package includes chocolate covered strawberries, sparkling wine, and charcuterie board. Quaaout’s charcuterie boards of local fare can include cured meats, cheese, veggies, nuts, olives, dried fruits, crackers or baguette bread, as well as jelly or jam spreads. Delicious!

NESKONLITH INDIAN BAND The Neskonlith Indian Band comprises three reserve land bases, adjacent to the Village of Chase and the City of Salmon Arm. The 1,280-hectare Neskonlith IR#1 is located approximately six kilometres west of Chase on the west side of the South Thompson River. Neskonlith IR#2 is also about six kilometres west of Chase on the east side of the South Thompson River and consists of 989 hectares. The band’s IR#3, with a land base of 517 hectares, is on the western boundary of the City of Salmon Arm. From Chief Judy Wilson Since the discovery of 215 unmarked burial graves of children found at the Kamloops Residential School, many vigils, ceremonies, youth runs, motor bike and truck convoys, walks, and canoe treks have been held by Secwepemc bands and various groups, as calls for justice and to honour the children who did not make it home to their families, communities and nations. Tributes have been left and prayers said at the monument near the front of the school—by individuals from all parts of BC and also the USA. Many other First Nations across Canada have reported similar unmarked graves at former residential schools. All of this has created grief and reliving trauma for Residential School Survivors, locally and countrywide.

Roasted Zucchini Ingredients 4 small zucchini, ends trimmed, quartered lengthwise 1/3 cup freshly grated Parmesan 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 1 1/2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice 2 tablespoons chopped fresh herbs such as parsley, basil, dill, or a mix (optional) Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Coat a cooling rack with nonstick spray and place on a rimmed baking sheet. In a small bowl, stir together the Parmesan, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Place the zucchini in a large bowl. Drizzle with the oil and sprinkle with the Parmesan mixture. Toss to coat, then arrange the zucchini on top of the cooling rack on the prepared baking sheet, being careful not to overlap. Place in the oven and bake until the zucchini is tender, about 12 to 15 minutes. Turn the oven to broil. Cook until the Parmesan is lightly crisp on top, about 2 to 3 minutes. Don’t walk away! The second you stop watching the cheese, it will decide to burn. Remove the zucchini from the oven and immediately squeeze the lemon juice over the top. Sprinkle with herbs. Enjoy warm or at room temperature.

Predeceased by her husband Al, Doreen was the loving mother of Alan Bruce and Michael Brett (Jacqueline). Grandmother of Crystal, Tyler, John and Michael. Great Grandmother of Jonah, Ashton, Seanna, Georgia and Rosemary. Great Great Grandmother of Mary and Scarlet. Sister of Margret, predeceased by brothers Bill and Jack. Aunt to Andy, Scott, Kim, Brent(deceased), Richard, Tara, Kelly and Tammy. Doreen was born in Wakefield, England in 1930. Shortly after the war, at a very young age, she brought her younger sister to Canada by ship. They travelled from the east coast by train to Vancouver where she eventually met Al. Doreen and Al lived in Vancouver, Calgary, Chicago, Calgary again, Toronto and Strathmore until they finally settled in Chase in the 1980's. They worked numerous years together selling office supplies in Kamloops until they retired. Time was then filled with family, friends, gardening and, of course, the Legion. Doreen, with her quick wit and wonderful sense of humour, was widely loved and will be greatly missed.

Benefits of Vaccination

The Sunflower is

COVID-19 Update for Thompson Okanagan TOTA Press Release

Now that over 80% of British Columbians are fully vaccinated, the benefits of vaccination are clear: Data from the BC Centre of Disease Control (BCCDC) shows that less than 5% of COVID-19 cases from June 15 to July 15 were among fully vaccinated people. More than 95 per cent of recent cases in the Central Okanagan are among people who are not fully-immunized against COVID-19. During the same time period, 78% of people hospitalized in B.C. with COVID-19 were unvaccinated. Since June 15 there have been no deaths or hospitalizations in fully vaccinated people under 60 in B.C. This is an important reminder that immunization is our most effective prevention against COVID-19. Public health officials are not recommending non-essential travel for

those who have not been fully vaccinated. Those who have been vaccinated may continue to travel, and we ask they do so safely and responsibly.
