rade 9 students at Chase Secondary School learnt financial literacy in the math 9 class. They learned how to have money work for them instead of working for their money. Through their vending machine business plans they were able to give back to the community. One group of students made a donation of $50.05 to the Chase Recreation Society. Another handed $38.41 to the CSS Band. Photos by Rob McLean The Chase & District Festival Society was established in 2009, with legacy funds from the successful 2008 Chase Centennial Celebrations. Run entirely by volunteers, the CDFS has assumed the organization of Canada Day and Music on the Lake from the Village of Chase, and in addition to the annual CornStock festival, the CDFS is proud to present the Village of Chase Lakeside Summer Music Series. The Village has provided the primary funding for this free summer event, and many individuals, organizations, and businesses have also contributed their time, funds, and resources to celebrate our community.

A Canada Day Report Submitted by Mercedes Settle, Youth Reporter
Canada day in Chase was an immense success this year. Just walking down the main section of town, one could swim through the crowds of red and white clothes and props. This was evident in the local shops and small businesses that day. Workers at Miller’s Cabin stated the parade was very good for business. Usually people come in after 12pm, however on Canada day customers entered all through the morning. Other shops such as Craig’s Bakery were packed with people, which made scoring an interview impossible. The parade itself was quite the spectacle. Everything
from the lovely ladies of Queens; Miss Bianca Dametto, Ashley Nickerson, and Natalie MacDonald; as well as multiple locally owned businesses to the emergency services. Finally at the Lake, there were plenty of vendors and a few very inspirational speeches displaying our National Pride. The hero behind the scene was Liam Befurt, a sound technician for the festival. Later that night, fireworks pierced the sky with our patriotism, reminding us all of one thing: Chase sure knows how to organize a Canada Day celebration.

Lions Club Canada Day submitted by Bev Iglesias
A very special 150th birthday celebration thank you to all the wonderful people who made the Lions Canada Day Breakfast a memorable one. Starting with the Chase Firefighters Association who paid for the Community Hall rental. To Craig & Cyndy Whiteley Einfeld at Craigs bakery for all the delicious bread to make toast. To Rick & Melissa at A & W for the condiments; Rachel Jensen for donating decorations; Bill McKenzie, Dale Robinson, for help decorating inside and Brian Strauch, Mayor Rick Berrigan for decorating outside the Community Hall. Harold Lewis, Jim Bryson for doing cash; Chase Firefighters, Alison Lauzon, Gary Schmidt, Vicki Strachan-Schmidt, Cory Sampson, Samantha Sampson for stepping up to help with the breakfast, we couldn’t have pulled this off without your crew; To a couple of my egg flippers, Debi Read, Lori Berrigan, we served almost 21 dozen eggs! My cooks in the kitchen, Les MacDonald, Brittany MacDonald, thanks for giving back your time to Lions; To my DISH PIT CREW,
Gary Lanoue and Brian Strauch, WOW, cleanest I’ve seen their hands! To all the little helpers picking up plates, serving coffee, Kane, Silas, Shyla, Faith, you were terrific; Megan Johnston, candidate for BC Ambassador, good luck from the Chase Lions and thank you for your help; Betty Strauch who help sell raffle tickets; Patsy McKinnon, who worked tirelessly in the preparation of this function; And my clean up crew, Lesley Anne Turner - Crealock, S van Dusen, for putting up with the Dish Pit banter, and for completely cleaning the kitchen right down to the floors... AND never a complaint! My wonderful Lions members who put in an 18 hour day between the breakfast and concession, Willy Gosse, Rob Simpson, Lorna Douglas, now that’s dedication! LASTLY to the 300+ patrons who came to celebrate this special Canada 150th birthday breakfast, we the Chase Lions Club sincerely thank you for your support along with the kind words of appreciation for the hard work that went into putting this event on.

Tech Talk: Streaming Services submitted by Stefan Schielke, inTechrity
Many people ask about streaming TV and movies. With so many choices, what is the ‘best’ option? Below are three of the most popular ways to either download or stream content. Torrent sites use files that are broken up into small pieces of information and shared over a peer-to-peer (P2P) network. Users download an entire file composed of small parts shared from multiple computers in the ‘swarm’. As a user downloads a piece of the file, make it available for someone to download it from them. Torrent sites share movies, TV, books, music, software… the possibilities are endless. Depending on the content being shared, users can v i o l a t e copyright infringement laws. In 1999 a small P2P company, called Napster, created a program that enabled people to share music. A court order shut down Napster in 2001 due to copyright infringement. Since then, many websites that have provided the same service. One of the most notable P2P sites is “The Pirate Bay,” which was started in 2003. The founders were all imprisoned in 2009 for copyright infringement. While the site still exists, it keeps getting moved to countries where laws are more relaxed. Android Kodi boxes – A Kodi box is a standalone device that runs the Kodi software and plugs into your TV or computer monitor. The software allows users to play and view most streaming media, such as videos, music, podcasts,
and videos, from the internet. The Kodi boxes and software themselves are not illegal. However, third-party software can be loaded onto the boxes allowing users to download pirated movies and TV shows that do violate copyright infringement laws. People ask me why I do not program and sell the Kodi boxes. Canadian companies have been told to cease selling them with the software pre-installed. I believe that providing these units to people (even without the additional software) contributes to illegal downloading. Netflix - is a streaming service that allows people to watch a wide variety of awardwinning TV shows, movies, documentaries and more on thousands of Internetconnected devices. While not all movies or TV shows are available to stream, there is a huge catalogue of entertainment available. Netflix operates on a subscription based model with plans for 1 screen, 2 screens or 4 screens, allowing you to share one account with family or friends. While there are other methods for streaming or downloading content, if you want to stay on the legal side of things, one is better off utilizing a service like Netflix. As always, if you need advice or help with your online safety, contact us on Facebook, Twitter, email or phone. Until next time, turn off your TV’s and enjoy everything that the Shuswap has to offer.

Arrow, Interfor and the Little Shuswap Lake Indian Band Slide into New Partnerships
Submitted by Rachann Pedersen, Arrow Transportation Systems
Editors Note: The last couple sentences were cut off last week; here is the final paragraph to that story, as many requested it. The details of the resource-development partnerships are still being finalized. The parties are working towards revenue and employment agreements that will see LSLIB sell timber volumes to Interfor. Arrow and Interfor will have an agreement to haul timber, not only from LSLIB land to the Adams Lake Mill, but also on other forestry projects. And they’ll do this in logging trucks they put on the road with LSLIB, through a joint-venture partnership.

RCMP Report submitted by Chase RCMP
TRAFFIC On July 3rd at approximately 10:45pm, Chase RCMP located a truck spinning its wheels in the parking lot of the Roderick Haig Brown Provincial Park. Police conducted a traffic stop and found the 21 yr old male driver to be driving while impaired by alcohol. The driver was issued a 90 day Immediate Roadside Suspension and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days. On June 26th at 10:04 pm Chase RCMP received a report of a missing 19 year old male missing from the McGillivray Lake Rd area near Chase BC. A party was being at that location and the male had wandered off earlier in the day. Shuswap
Volunteer Search and Rescue assisted and located the male safe. UPDATE: On February 19th, 2017 the Chase RCMP received a report of a parked travel trailer containing a large number of cats at a residence in Chase. The SPCA attended and at the time no issues were noted. After monitoring this incident a search warrant was executed on May 11th and 60 cats were seized by the SPCA with the assistance of Chase RCMP. As of June 30th charges are pending against the owner for causing unnecessary pain and suffering and for failing to provide suitable and adequate condition to the cats.

Music on the Lake returns with a bang! Submitted by the Chase & District Festival Society
The popular Summer Music Series started up this past week with the very talented Devon Coyote Trio, from Kelowna BC. Memorial Park was once again a place for community gathering filled with families, lawnchairs, food trucks, cold beers in the beer garden and lots of bug spray! Devon Coyote entertained the crowd with his incredible
voice and impressive guitar skills and word in the crowd was they are neck and neck with last year’s favorites, Shattered Blue!! So if you missed the first week…you don’t want to miss another because we have an incredible summer lineup of amazing musicians!
Upcoming Musician Bio: Sabrina Weeks Sabrina Weeks and Swing Cat Bounce (SCB) are a high energy bouncing boogie blues band hailing from British Columbia. Sabrina’s voice is a ménage à trois between Etta James, Fae West and Doris Day writhing beneath black satin sheets. Add Mike Hilliard who is by far one of the most underrated yet insanely talented guitar players in Canada and you have something exciting and fresh. When attending a Sabrina Weeks and SCB performance, you laugh out loud, dance uncontrollably, sing along, loud and proud, and get lost in a series of unforgettable moments. Their extensive touring and hard work has resulted in several accolades including: ● Sabrina Weeks was selected to perform as part of the Women in Blues Event at Massey Hall in Toronto.
● Runner up for a 2014 Blewzy Award ● Winner for 2011 Maple Blues Award Best New Artist ● Nominated for BCIMA Blues Album of the Year Award ● Voted Pick to Click by Sirius/XM Radio ● Charted in the Top Ten on the global blues RMR charts and ranked top 100 on the annual Roots Music Report. ● Voted Top Ten by the Blues Underground Network.* Voted The Years Best CD by CFBX. ● Voted Top 100 by Real Blues. “Sabrina Weeks and gang are a sizzling, scintillating, swinging, soulful band who deliver a first-class show wherever they
appear- original and fresh with a new twist to the blues and a dance beat that just won’t quit. Their show is a guaranteed crowd pleaser and this gal can REALLY sing! Sabrina is a Canadian treasure in the making.” - Jack Lavin, Powder Blues “Sabrina can caress a ballad, shout a mean blues, and swing with the best of them. Sabrina’s gift in using her exceptional voice includes the ability to make lyrics come alive. Hearing her is a beautiful experience.” Barbara Barnes Sims, Sun Records, 1957—1960
