Historian David Lepsoe’s historic tour of Downtown Chase submitted

On Sat. Jun 24, local Historian

David Lepsoe took a group of 25 people on his signature Downtown Historic Tour of Chase. The tour was free of charge, as David was encouraging people to attend Chase Museum’s Strawberry Tea fundraiser happening the same day. The majority of the participants happily supported the Museum’s event after the tour.

David’s knowledge of the history of his community is extremely valuable. He has been organizing historic tours since 2004. The first tour was a candlelight tour at Chase Country Christmas. Love for

history and the community has inspired him to pass this knowledge to locals and tourists who want to know more about the past of this beautiful village.

People who attended the tour had a chance to see pictures of Whitfield Chase, take a peek at old newspaper cartoons depicting life in Chase in the early 20th century, and the old Adams River Lumber Company mill that was located on the South Thompson River in Chase. Everyone received a copy of David’s historic booklet as well.

David Lepsoe would like to thank everyone who attended the tour, and Elite Events BC for organizing this event.

After 24 years, Ella and Frank Duheme have moved away from their home in the Village of Chase, but they want to say thank you for the life found in this great community. Thanks to:

• The many Care Aides who helped them in so many ways over the past 4 years. Thank you for the smiles and generosity of spirit. Quite simply for making life easier for us.

• The wonderful and attentive doctors and nurse practitioners at the Chase Health Center, for your sincere care and quick responses. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

• To the folks at PharmaChoice. You took such special care of us. Thank you.

• Better at Homes especially Louise and Val for the special help and sincere care.

• All the folks at Creekside Seniors Center for the many years of friendship and fun. You were a huge part of our life. We enjoyed every minute of it.

• We enjoyed many a Canada Day celebration, the Christmas parades, and other social events. You were all such a vital part of our lives.

• Citizens on Patrol (C.O.P). This was just such a wonderful way to work with and serve the community. We shared such great relationships and nearly 12 years of Coffee Houses. Such good people.

• The Chase Legion, especially the Women’s Institute for the fun and camaraderie. Ella really enjoyed it.

• Chase Seniors Bus. What would we have done without you? Thank you for the many trips and the special care and always being there for us.

• And to the Community at Large, we can’t express how special those years were, and it was all because of the people, our neighbors (you know who you are), and longstanding friendships where we went camping, shared stories, and played cards. Those friendships will always hold a special place in our heart.

Chase is a great place to live. We really did love it.

We hope community members will volunteer wherever they can because we know that volunteers make the difference to create not just a place to live, but a home. We love Chase. Thank you for the memories.

Obituary

LaRae Skinner

Sept. 28, 1965 - June 26, 2023

Survived by: partner Mike, son Gerald, mom Fern, sisters Renee & Ronda and many more relatives and friends. LaRae was an incredible woman, partner, mom, daughter, and sister. A caregiver who also loved her gardening and being one with nature. She was amazing and fun to be around. She was loved deeply and will be missed by so many, she will remain in our hearts forever. May she rest in peace.

Obituary Laurie (Laurence John) Payne

April 30, 1932 – June 5, 2023

A transplant from England, Laurie settled in Turtle Valley, Chase BC where he realized artistic projects in the media of writing, sculpture, painting, metal and wood work, and had public showings for his work in pottery over the course of several decades. Amongst his many achievements, he fought vigorously for social rights, men’s rights, the environment, and developed an ”artisans trail” of signs and maps throughout the Shuswap. He is known best for his loving, and inspirational presence amongst his friends and community, often the last person on the dance floor, or participating in improvised music sessions of which he was self-taught. He is predeceased by his oldest son Krishna, and his sister, Shirley, and survived by his children Dorian, Alisoun, and Jesse, and grandchildren Cayenne, Rowan, Kaedance, and Juniper. From our family to yours, hold your loved ones close, and we encourage you to find the strength to embrace the learning that these loving relationships offer, even and especially when they are difficult.

Gracing the Joyce Dunn Theatre stage for the second week of Music on the Lake is Zuffalo, presented by Team Equipment. Zuffalo was formed out of a shared love for favourite bands such as the Beatles, Grateful Dead, James Brown, and the Band. With a mutual interest in improvisation, boosted by the jazz training of all band members and a member’s music therapy background, the Zuffalo players love to weave notes and beats around each other and paint new musical ideas on the fly. But this is only one side of the coin, with the other being a four-headed songwriting monster that is

always searching for the next unique sounding, harmonyenriched and lyrically mindexpanding song. The Zuffalo band members feel incredibly lucky to frequently flock to a unique studio in Baden, Ontario in the countryside outside of Kitchener. It is here, where the band members are at their most creative. The beautiful sunsets, amazing meteor showers, and the peacefulness of nature surround “The Barn” where the band crafts their music with careful consideration, always keeping humor at the forefront to secure the bond within the band.
