MUSIC ON THE LAKE – SUMMER MUSIC SERIES Submitted by Chase & District Festival Society
The Chase & District Festival Society and the Village of Chase are excited to once again be involved in the burgeoning live music scene across the Shuswap region this summer on Tuesday nights in July and August. The 9 week "Music On The Lake" Summer Music Series will be from 7pm – 8:30pm along the shores of the Little Shuswap Lake at Memorial Park in Chase. Shuswap Tourism, a marketing organization which assists tourism development, has become very aware of the critical mass of live music venues and festivals in the region and has seen the need to promote the need for live music under the Shuswap Tourism brand. Chase is also excited to share that we are now part of this marketing initiative! There will be live music now everyday throughout the summer in Sicamous, Enderby, Salmon Arm, Scotch Creek, Blind Bay and Chase! NEW THIS YEAR – BEER GARDENS AT MOTL The Village of Chase Mayor and Council sees this as a great marketing opportunity to promote our beautiful village and surrounding areas. The Chase & District
Festival Society has been appointed by resolution to run Canada Day, CornStock and Music on the Lake which now fall under the name, “Lakeside Summer Music Series”. The CDFS will continue to run all events the same with a few great additions this year! Canada Day, they are doubling the budget for fireworks and every Tuesday night from 6pm-9pm you will find a Beer Garden at Music on the Lake. There was a lot of interest expressed last summer for a beer garden, as well as a couple instances of open alcohol at the park in which RCMP was contacted. The CDFS are hoping by providing this service to the community, this will rectify that problem and it is a great fundraising opportunity for the CDFS which is a Not for Profit Society and all monies raised go back to the community, through Festivals and Events! There are vending opportunities at the park for each event this summer. The CDFS is now accepting applications for vendors for our “Park Market” if interested please email market@ chasefestival.ca. Stay tuned for the exciting summer line up and musician bios in the Sunflower.

Fire Rescue kicked off car wash season by Cavelle Layes
Chase Fire Rescue members hosted the first of their annual summer carwashes on Saturday May 27th in the PharmaChoice parking lot. While the Firefighters Association’s carwashes have always been received well by the community and remain busy throughout the day, this carwash surpassed all expectations. The fundraiser was set to be held from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. but as customers continued to file in the event ended up extending much longer. Members were busy all day long, with hardly a break in lineups which at times stretched in double lines out the parking lot and down the road. Thankful for the huge show of support, the members worked hard with smiles on their faces as the day continued on. While the fundraiser was being held, members were also taking part in emergency drivers training. Those who drove by the Chase Secondary School parking lot may have noticed a course built out of pylons with rescue vehicles
and firetrucks making their way through. This type of training is extremely important both for seasoned veterans of the department as well as the rookies as it helps build many skills. Some of the newer members took the wheel of the trucks for the first time during this course. The course challenged many different skills that are required on a variety scenes, including manipulating the trucks around confined spaces. Members rotated through the training and the carwash, getting both jobs finished by 5 p.m. The car wash raised over $1000 thanks to the generous community members who stopped in. This money will be used to help aid training efforts, including such things as building props to help practice scenarios. The department members would like to thank all those who came out and showed their support, as well as PharmaChoice for allowing the carwash to be hosted in the parking lot, and Lordco for donating the carwash soap.

What are the Odds? Sunflower’s Coincidence Column
Here is my own coincidence story - it spans a bunch of different parts of my life, I hope you can follow everything and enjoy. The year was 2005, I had recently graduated from college and got a job at a newspaper in my hometown. The newspaper was owned by a very resourceful proprietor who also operated the town’s ambulance service out of the same premises, along with a couple other businesses. The newspaper had 1 full time employee, who we will call Kevin for the this story. He had no experience or training with journalism; he actually ended up there because he really wanted to work with the emergency responders on the ambulance side. He was finding it hard to pass the EMT test, so he made due by carrying around one of the radios and just soaking in the EMT experience whenever possible. With my intense work ethic, my fresh college diploma and my Canadian Press Style Guide in hand, working with Kevin started to annoy me right away.... SO MUCH. It got really bad. He was a know it all and it drove me nuts. For example, I remember one time he said days of the week didn’t need to be capitalized. I was incredulous. I landed my boyfriend (at the time), Mitch, a job there too. He was on the slacker side of the spectrum and mostly stayed in a cubicle internetting the days away. We worked at the paper for 7 months or so before I landed a job in Calgary working for the real estate board. I could barely swallow my annoyance and say goodbye to Kevin. I was a bit of an immature jerk at the time. So, years later, living in Calgary, working my job at the real estate board, one day, I SAW KEVIN walking through the building. I basically dodged him, and slunk back to my office to confirm on the database that he was a Realtor now. Whoa. I was a bit shaken by this

Calgary Coincidences by Kelsey Snelgrove discovery, but I didn’t see him again and life carried on. Mitch and I had parted ways at this point but we remained good friends. In 2008, I met a guy online and we moved in together. His name was Jo, he was French Canadian and he worked in a warehouse. He moved in with me and he basically stopped going to his job immediately because we were so in love or something (it was so romantic...?!). We soon had to move out of my place because it was a 1 person accommodation only. Finding a place was tough, it was a very competitive market. We ended up in an apartment owned and operated by a woman in her 70’s or so. We realized fairly quickly that she was what you would describe as a ‘nightmare landlord’. She was SO stubborn and hard to deal with. Everything because an issue with her. I remember being at the bank watching the tellers trying their hardest to convince her over the phone that her request for me to change my bank account to a Calgary branch was not necessary AT ALL. ‘That’s not how cheques work’, they explained, but her mind was set. I can’t even scratch the surface though, she was just awful. Jo ended up getting a job at a sign printing place we’ll call Signair. Being from Quebec, he entered the job like a cultural anthropologist, fascinated by the interactions of co-workers and office politics. He told me that he was replacing a woman name Krista, who was for some reason still hanging out the office often a lot. About a week after he started, we went out to celebrate Krista’s birthday with everyone from the office and I got to meet the people at his new job. How surprised was I to see my old notfriend Kevin! Turns out Krista is his younger sister!
Get your bike fixed We have new & used
I was no longer such an immature jerk and Kevin and I were able to catch up and have a great conversation. Phew. I started to tell him about what was happening in my life. All I said was, “I have the worst landlord...” and he interjected with “is it my grandma?”. I laughed it off at first, before we determined that yes, yes, my awful landlord really IS his grandma. Turns out that she has a real long history of ripping off tenants, putting people in danger by ignoring safety/fire codes, and just generally being awful. Jo eventually got fired or laid off from that sign job. I was working at a coffee shop at the time (because I got sick of working in an office). I had landed my old friend Mitch a job there too after he got back from a year traveling in Australia. (Mini coincidence: While I was dating Jo, Mitch had a girlfriend named Jo, short for Jolene at that same time.) There was no cubicle to hide from work in at the coffee shop, so he was on the job hunt. He told me one day that he was applying for a job at some sign making place, having no idea that was Jo’s job. He got the job and he still works there to this day. Other small coincidences trickled from this main one to the point where I felt like the character in the movie I Heart Huckabees who hires “Existential Detectives” to try to uncover what his coincidences MEAN. One time on a whim, I decided to message a woman on Craigslist who was looking for platonic friends. She turned out to be Krista’s roommate. I discovered another seemingly totally unrelated friend played on a sports team with Krista. For a while it seemed like everything in my life would relate to this whole thing somehow. But at this point, living in the Shuswap, I feel like it’s finally over.... OR IS IT?

Algae, pollen, and large debris in Shuswap Lake Reports of algae in the Canoe area of Shuswap Lake this morning are currently under investigation. “The biologists are on the lake today collecting samples of a yet-to-beidentified algae that is present in low levels near Canoe,” said Erin Vieira, program manager for the Shuswap Watershed Council, a watershed-based partnership that enhances water quality and safe recreation in the Shuswap. “They have ruled out the possibility that it is Ochromonas algae, also known as Golden Brown algae, which is what bloomed in the lake in 2010,” Vieira said. The algae samples will be sent to a
lab for identification. The levels aren’t substantial enough to be deemed a ‘bloom’ at this point. There are also large swaths of pine pollen in the water, both floating on the surface and submerged in the water column, which can bear a resemblance to algae. “There is also plenty of large debris in the lake, ranging from logs, firewood and plywood due to high water levels catching debris off shorelines,” Vieira said. Any b o dy venturing onto the lake is urged to be very cautious, watch for debris, and not create wake near shorelines to avoid causing damage.
Local Couple Asking For Help by Leanne White
My son, Aaron Blacklock and his fiance Saydie Ann Billy are expecting their first child. due to arrive mid July. After first ultrasound, something was not right and the kids had to go to BC Womens Hospital in Vancouver for multiple tests. The doctors found something concerning. The baby has bleed on brain in utero. They still do not know cause or effect this will have on baby. It is now a high risk pregnancy with complications. They were told they needed to temporarily relocate to Vancouver to be closely monitored and further testing prior to birth of their son. Saturday, June 3rd Saydie was airlifted from RIH in Kamloops to Bc Womens. And, Aaron drove down with his mother. They now are in hotel in Vancouver, until they can move to Ronald McDonald
House. Aaron has had to take a leave of absence from work to be by his fiance’s side until everyone including baby has been cleared by doctors. They were not prepared for the complications and extreme expenses. No one ever is. They have started a Go Fund Me Page. Search “Aaron + Saydies baby medical help”, or go to www. gofundme.com/ aaronsaydies-babymedical-help We are trying to pull together and make sure that they are comfortable and have what they need there and for when they come home. All help and prayers appreciated. This young family is struggling, and they may need to be there for a long while. -Thank you, a concerned Grandma to be
