Fighting Fire with Fire & Heart Part Three of a Three-part series by Carolyn Parks Mintz Author & Freelance Writer
My recent articles have highlighted the functions of Chase Fire & Rescue (CF&R) and the brave men and women who make up its brigade. Something that bears mentioning is that a lot of the extensive training they undertake is done on weekends and in their spare time—which may mean being away from family or missing kids’ events. But then dedication to the siren call of firefighting is understood by family members as well as by the person learning the ropes. The 30 certificates of course completion on the office walls of Chief Brian Lauzon are a distinct indication of this professional’s quest for additional capability and knowledge—and are another assurance that CF&R is in good hands. Those firefighters interviewed spoke of encouraging individuals thinking about joining the department to ‘just try it.’ They all agreed that it was surprising and affirming to learn what they were capable of, how much they could advance, and how they enjoyed exceeding even their own expectations. A new recruit who was afraid of heights was able to scale a very long ladder to the top—and another who was claustrophobic was able to strap on a SCBA, a self-contained breathing apparatus, and wear it without difficulty. Achievement above and beyond the call of duty regularly occurs, not only at fire scenes but also within the fire hall itself. And across the water, the Adams Lake and Little Shuswap Lake First Nations maintain their own steadfast firefighting

brigades. Adams Lake fire department also services the Neskonlith First Nation. When authorized to do so, these and Chase Fire & Rescue are able to support one another in the case of a particularly ferocious fire. Deputy Chief Maria Beaurain has always wanted to be a firefighter. “As a child, when I’d go past the fire hall, I’d think ‘Oh, I’d love to join the department!” And when she and Tim Kenning moved to Canada and then to Chase, the opportunity was there. “I told Tim to check it out, sign up, first,” Maria reports. “Soon afterward I was there too. That was in 2010. And the rest is history, never looked back!” Maria was app oi nte d Deputy Chief last year, and with Tim coordinating Rescue, this family team is a key part of their new firefighting family. “I think the Chief chose people for various roles based on personalities, who would fit together, also on our capabilities and length of service.” “My responsibilities are to assist the Chief, whether that be with administration, training, scheduling, or records. And if he is out of town, then I’m in charge.” “Being an officer involves extra obligations and extra effort to do your best with all tasks, as well as setting a good example for others. And balancing a fulltime job, a home, family life and the fire department requires careful time management.” “But,” she goes on, “it’s all worth it and the thank-you’s we sometimes get from citizens are really nice extras.” “All the women in our department are strong women, resilient personalities,
but one of the things female firefighters face,” she goes on, “basically the only thing, is that we don’t have the upper body strength that males do. Men and women are just built differently. The guys recognize that sometimes we need a hand lifting something heavy, but we all train in the hall’s fitness room and keep in good shape. We contribute everything we can and value each other.” Given some of the difficulties reported within many other organizations, it is refreshing to learn that the capable women with CF&R are treated with respect and are appreciated for their contributions. Being female and considered ‘one of the guys’ is a feather in the cap of the inclusive and confident male contingent of Chase Fire & Rescue. S h a w n M c C a r t h y decided last fall to investigate serving with CF&R after talking with fire fighter Mike Wallace. “It sounded interesting, and a bit adventurous, something I’d never done before,” says Shawn. “There’s a camaraderie within the group, and I’m learning every day. It’s something I want to do, something I want to be involved with.” Shawn will soon be certified at Level 1 Exterior Ops and also has a Class 1 driver’s license. “Driving the fire trucks is a normal thing for me,” he says with a grin. “And I’ve enjoyed all the training,” he goes on, “whether it be learning how smoke moves, what it can do, or how to read a fire. Takes time to get it all and the ongoing training sessions on Tuesdays are a bonus.” Continued on next page...

CHASE FIRE RESCUE Asked what are the main characteristics of a volunteer fire fighter, Shawn states, “Overall enthusiasm for it. And that keenness is contagious. It draws you in. Everyone contributes. We’re in it together, whether it be fundraising, cleaning the hall, polishing a truck, attending a vehicle crash or fighting a blaze. It’s us against it all.” “And from the Chief down, we are proud of and happy about the accomplishments of the members of the department. ‘Way to go!’ and encouraging each other builds our team. Checking your ego at the door is important to fitting in.” Shawn agrees that being part of the worldwide kinship of fire fighters is more than special. No matter where they travel, they are welcomed by colleagues bonded by community contribution, saving lives, and doing their duty to the best of their ability. And yes, a stipend is paid to those risking life and limb and taking on
significant responsibility—“gas money” as it’s jokingly called. However, it is abundantly clear that CF&R members are all about community service, not what’s attached to it. In conclusion, without Chase Fire & Rescue, insurance rates for village residences and businesses would undoubtedly skyrocket, as would the risk of harm, of property loss, and of possible lives lost. As the wife of a former volunteer Captain fire fighter, your scribbler can attest to how important giving back was to him. James says, “Being a volunteer fire fighter gave me the best sense of contributing to my community than anything I’ve ever done.” With that, what more is there to say? ... except THANK YOU, Chase Fire & Rescue, for serving based on the fire in your belly and the goodness of your heart, for being there for years, for being who you are, and for looking after us all so well!

Property Taxes
By now you will have received your property tax notices. It is my understanding that the mill rate went up 15%. It is because of this that the village will not raise taxes this year. My assessment went up 27% and thus i will be taxed by the province accordingly. Okay. So 27% is pretty high but I can live with that. I think. Now here is the thing! The mill rate is raised

Play Safe This Weekend submitted by Interior Health
Interior Health is reminding residents across the region to take extra precautions while enjoying recreational water activities this weekend and throughout the summer. With many areas experiencing flooding and higher water levels, there can be hidden risks. These may include fast-moving water, ingesting contaminated floodwater and/or coming into contact with floating or underwater debris. The following precautions should be taken: · Avoid fast-flowing water such as creeks and rivers: High water in rivers can overwhelm the strongest swimmers. Even if you know a spot well, recent conditions may make the river unpredictable. Stay away from river banks as flowing water may cause the bank to be unstable. Cold water temperatures also pose the risk of hypothermia. · Watch children closely: Ensure that children are supervised
around water and are not ingesting or putting their faces in water. If visiting a splash pad, ensure children do not drink the water or put their mouths over water features. Most municipal water pads have chlorinated water, which does reduce the risk. · Do not ingest water and avoid putting your face in water: Although bacteria may not be concentrated in large bodies of water (e.g. lakes), it’s important to take precautions. · Do not swim in areas near septic systems that may have been compromised. · Wear a lifejacket when out on the water: Large debris such as logs in local lakes and rivers can present physical hazards and increase the risk of entrapment and drowning. Enjoy your weekend – but enjoy safely. Be aware of increased risks, keep close supervision of children and take extra precautions.

A season of hospitality by Tyler Harper
As I settle in to my favourite place to reflect and write this column, as a village and region we sit on the cusp of our season of hospitality. Chase is a great place to visit any time of the year, the Shuswap is stunning twelve months of the year, but it is our summers that put us on the map, it is summer that allows us to play host to so many, from so many places. Looking out my front window, up to the highway, I know that in a few days that road will suddenly swell with weekend traffic and everything in our village will get instantly busier. This is our chance to be host, to offer hospitality to thousands of people from near and far. But hospitality is hard, hospitality is costly. Hosting people means sacrifices. Hosting means that we might have to give up for others. The French philosopher Jacques Derrida reminds us that hospitality is an attitude of utter openness and a readiness to give. And so as we welcome others, as we live out hospitality it might cost us, it might mean being willing to give up our usual table at the coffee shop, or our quiet roads and highways, or it might mean we give up our time to welcome people, to greet them and extend friendship, knowing that we might not receive anything in return. Hospitality might mean helping with directions or it might mean opening our homes. But ultimately hospitality is opening ourselves to another and may be best symbolised by the outstretched arms of a hug. Extending hospitality is a risk, it is stepping out without knowing if you’ll get anything in return. But receiving hospitality also has a cost. Receiving hospitality isn’t free.
When someone receives hospitality it costs them the acknowledgement that they are in need. Receiving hospitality means owning up that we don’t have everything we need or we don’t have it all together. Sometimes we will encounter people who refuse our hospitality— whether it is the way they drive on the highway or the way they treat our homes— these attitudes of entitlement are rooted in an inability or unwillingness to accept hospitality, to own up to the fact that they don’t have all that they need. But a rejection of hospitality doesn’t mean we should withhold hospitality. Inability to perceive a need does not mean that need doesn’t exist. As a Christian, hospitality is ultimately grounded in Jesus who engaged humanity in our deepest need. His arms out stretched on the cross, embracing humanity in our need for reconciliation, ready to give true life—life not as we know it, but life as we were created for— to all those who come to Him. So whether you are hosting and providing hospitality this season or you are visiting our wonderful region, remember there is a cost to hospitality. Hospitality isn’t free for anyone. But extending and receiving hospitality makes our world a little more human, life a little more worth living. So make the most of this season of hospitality.

In loving memory of Myrtle May Durante (Kruks) of Chase, BC, formerly Kamloops, BC. It is with great sadness that the family of Myrtle May Durante (Kruks) announces her passing on Thursday, April 19, 2018 at the age of 85. She left this life peacefully with her family by her side. Myrtle will be lovingly remembered by her son Alfie Durante and her grandchildren Jesse Durante and Ashton Durante. She will also be missed by her great-grandson Marcus Durante. She is predeceased by her daughter Marlene Durante (1992), son Leonard Loss (2010) and her husband Guiseppe (Joe) Durante (1999) of Kamloops. Myrtle was born in Smithers, BC to Helmer and Laura Loss and was raised in Topley, BC. She moved to Kamloops in the 50s and got a job at the Moose Hall where she met Joe in 1952. She also worked at Tranquille Hospital and later got a job in the early 70s at Woodwards where she worked side by side with her daughter Marlene. She then moved to Celista/Scotch Creek and finally settled in Chase where she worked in the local drug store as a cashier until retiring in the early 2000s. She had a great love of animals and enjoyed playing the guitar and accordion. She especially loved her little shitzu (Chico) who remained with her for almost 15 years and was a great little friend. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends in Kamloops, along with the local residents of Chase/Pritchard and the Shuswap area. Her friends in Chase have decided to have an lunch at U-Thi Sushi & Grill Restaurant on Saturday June 9th at 11:30. All who knew Myrtle are welcome to join us. Order and pay for yourself off the menu. Condolences may be expressed to the family from www.myalternatives.ca

I googled “Rorshach test.” But all that came up were pictures of my parents fighting. A man walks into a lawyer’s office and asks, “How much do you charge?” The lawyer says, “$5,000 for three questions.” “Wow, that’s pretty expensive, isn’t it?” the man asks. “Yes,” says the lawyer. “Now, what’s your third question?”

When I look at chocolate, I hear two voices in my head. The first one says: “You need to eat that chocolate.” The other voice goes: “You heard. Eat the chocolate.” Just came home from a training session. Two hours on the treadmill did me really good. If only I could somehow stop the constant beeping and the irritated comments of the cashier.

SD73’s grad season gets underway submitted
June will be a busy and exciting month for School District No. 73 (Kamloops-Thompson) as nearly 1,000 students from 15 schools and programs mark the end of their secondary school careers. In the coming weeks, Grade 12 students i n Kamloops, C h a s e , L o g a nL a k e and Clearwater will be similarly recognized. “Graduation ceremonies are always special,” said Bill Hamblett, SD 73’s Asst. Superintendent of Secondary Schools. “We’ve watched so many of these young people come into our schools as children, and
now they are leaving as young adults. We are exceptionally proud of all of them and the work they have done. We truly want to wish them well as they continue on.” Of note this year, SD 73 will graduate 27 students from the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program at Norkam Secondary School, and roughly 225 students who have taken courses or training in the district’s Transitions, Trades and Technology programs. The Chase Secondary School graduation ceremony takes place on Friday, June 22nd at 4 pm in the Chase Secondary School Gym.

Lobsterfest to Serve up Fresh-Caught Crustaceans by Cavelle Layes, Chase Fire Rescue
Chase Fire Rescue’s 4th Annual Lobsterfest is a week away and tickets are flying out the door! The event which serves fresh-caught lobsters flown in from Cape Breton hours before the dinner, will be held on Saturday, June 9th at the Adams Lake Indian Band Recreation Centre this year. We are so grateful to have so many people support our event each and every year. We always have a great time and we hope these ticket sales mean you do too! Over the last few years we have noticed some of you have come wearing some pretty creative outfits to it the occasion, and we LOVE them. So, this year we thought we would make it interesting. We are sending out a challenge to all Lobsterfest guests, come wearing your most creative Lobsterfest themed shirt, apron, outfit, you name it, and you will be entered to win a free ticket to next
year’s event. Make sure you bring your ‘A’ game though, because all contestants will be judged and only the best will win! We can’t wait to see what you come up with. For those of you who haven’t purchased a ticket yet, don’t wait too long as we are only selling 300. Don’t forget that this year we have Shattered Blue coming to entertain during the dance portion of the night. Shattered Blue is an incredibly talented band who tend to sell out their shows whenever they make their way to Chase. Tickets can be purchased by cash through a department member, or through the Chase Village Office. They can be purchased through etransfer by sending
your order to chasevolunteerfire@gmail. com, or by credit through our website at www.chasefirerescue.com. Tickets are $50 for lobster tickets, or a table of 8 for $360 (all full table orders are reserved, so if you don’t want to wait in line to ensure your group gets to sit together, be sure to book a full table). Hotdog and hamburger tickets are $25 each. Kids tickets (that come with hotdog or hamburger) are $10. All tickets come with free admission to see Kamloops band Shattered Blue play. The money raised at this event helps fund training for our members, new tools and equipment, and this year we are working to help fund the replacement of our rescue truck.
