Start your golf cart engines

Anyone driving a Neighbourhood Golf Cart MUST have a valid BC Drivers’ license. When individuals apply at the Village office for a municipal permit (value $25), the person applying will be required to sign a declaration promising that their NGC is appropriately equipped to drive on Chase roadways. NGCs will NOT be permitted to drive on sidewalks. When a permit is issued by the municipality, you will be provided with a map showing all the areas of the Village that your Neighbourhood Golf Cart can travel. Other than some small portions of roadway (near entrances to the Village from/to the Trans Canada Highway) Neighbourhood golf carts can travel anywhere in Chase. Speed? Neighbourhood Golf Carts will be permitted to travel no more than 30km/hr….and for most of them, they are unable to travel faster than that. For regular vehicles, the regular speed limits in Chase will apply unless you come

up behind an NGC – regular vehicles are asked to slow down and pass safely around a Neighbourhood Golf Cart, and then resume the regularly posted speed. Drivers of NGCs are being asked to be courteous and pull over as far as possible on the paved surface of the roadway if a regular vehicle wishes to pass. We hope everyone will have fun with this pilot project, and will promote the program to make it work. Chase at this time is the ONLY community in all of BC that is allowing Neighbourhood Golf Carts to travel on our roadways. While it may impede some vehicle travel at times, we hope it will be a success. It provides less expensive modes of travel around the community, it provides a mode of transport that has a lower carbon footprint than our regular fossil fuel burning vehicles, and it adds another element of fun to our community. Let’s all work together to promote Chase to the rest of BC!”

The Sunflower’s Coincidence Column

‘A COLLAGE OF COINCIDENCES’ Part 2 submitted by Alan Pineo

*We moved in to our home in Chase September 1998 and a week later had purchased a new TV for the living room. It was to go in the wall setback above the fireplace and after wrestling it into the house Dorothy and I attempted to lift it in to place. It was heavy and cumbersome and the lifting wasn’t going all that well and pretty soon we couldn’t stop laughing at our feeble effort. It was then I decided to go outside and see if I could spot a volunteer to help with the lift. Sure enough two doors down there was a man out in his front yard so I walked over and asked him if he could lend a hand. It was then I noticed their name on a sign above his garage, John & Shirley Boh. I took a second look at him then realized I knew him from our time in Dawson Creek in the mid 60’s… over 30 years ago. John was RCMP and we had played ball together. I also remembered his wife and my wife gave birth in 1964 in the same room two months apart at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Dawson Creek. ….. it was an unexpected reunion. *It was 2003 and I was on my second trip to the Maritimes in the past three years only this time I took Dorothy with me and we made it a holiday. Our days on PEI had come to an end and it was time to board the ferry in Charlottetown and head for Cape Breton. Once on board we headed for the cafeteria and joined the line of hungry passengers. As we shuffled ever closer to the ‘gourmet food‘ awaiting us we started chatting with a lady in the line. Turns out she was visiting from Kamloops and had been

our eldest granddaughter’s teacher in Grade 3 at Juniper Ridge……. well that didn’t take long ! *It was late September 2009 and we were near the end of our five week RV trip to Yukon / Alaska and the weather in Whitehorse had suddenly turned cool and wet. So far we had experienced near perfect conditions and had become spoiled so I looked up the weather to the south and could see an amazing forecast ahead for the Chilcotin. It was time to go. Three days later we pulled in to our usual secluded spot at Rush’s Lake located 30 km west of the Gang Ranch and settled in to enjoy the sun and the heat. On our second day we were rowing the lake when we noticed a large plume of smoke to the southeast. It looked bad. We returned to our campsite and I walked up to the closest road to see if anyone might know what was going on. Within minutes an RCMP car pulled up and as I was asking him about the fire a local logger drove up in his red truck and joined the conversation. Soon Dorothy joined us and within a minute or two the logger had spotted Dorothy’s Rotary cap and asked if she was with Rotary. My husband is she said, and he then asked if we might know Doug Everett who was a member of the Chase Rotary Club… the logger was Rob Everett, and of course he was Doug & Jacquie’s son, both of whom we knew very well. In fact, Dorothy told him, we had some of his mother’s homemade jams in our camper….to which Rob replied....I don’t even have any of my Mom’s jam’s !

10 Questions with...

This week we talk with Selina Knorr, who many of you know from teaching yoga and other fitness classes. Selina is a mom to 3 kids and is often seen with a big smile riding her horse down VLA Road. Q • You have a fresh new little baby born only a few weeks ago! Congratulations! How’s it going? A • It’s going well. I’m enjoying my new little boy very much. I forgot how peaceful breastfeeding can be -it forces me to be still. My other 2 kids are a handful (age 2 and 5), but thankfully my husband has time off work and keeps them busy on our farm. Q • You moved to Chase from Switzerland when you were 11 - what was that adjustment like? A • It wasn’t easy. I didn’t speak English and hated leaving my friends in Switzerland. But the teachers in Chase did a great job of helping me out. I learned the language fairly quickly and had no problems keeping up with school work and my classmates. Q • How did you get into yoga, and what do you like about teaching it? A • I took my first yoga class when I was in my early twenties. I liked how it made me feel strong and focused. As I continued with taking yoga classes, and found it helped me be a more confident competitor/rider (I compete in an Equestrian sport called Three-Day Eventing). A couple years later I was regularly attending a Yoga & Pilates Fusion class at the YMCA, and the instructor approached me and asked if I was interested in subbing the class while she was away. I was terrified

• Repairs • Parts • bikes

and said no, but then re-considered and I decided to give it a shot. It was completely out of my comfort zone, but I felt excited by the opportunity. After subbing her class, the class instructor then encouraged me to take training to become a certified Yoga & Fitness Instructor, which I did. I love seeing people improve, whether it’s mastering a pose that’s been challenging for them, overcoming injuries, or finally accepting and enjoying their body as it is. Q • What is your favourite yoga pose and why? A • I don’t think I can choose just one. Extended side angle pose is one that I always enjoy. And Pigeon pose is one that I feel my body always needs. Q • Tell us about your horses! A • I currently have 2 Thoroughbred horses that came off the racetrack. I got “Runaway Cowboy” 12 years ago in exchange for a case of beer. He didn’t want to be a racehorse and I was fortunately in the right place at the right time and took a chance on him, agreeing to take him on unseen. It’s been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. We’ve had a lot of success in competitions, but what I’m most proud of is our strong connection. He’s the horse that I rode down the aisle at my wedding; he’s the horse my kids will learn how to ride on.

Get your bike fixed We have new & used

My other horse is “Path to Home” a 9 year old Thoroughbred that we got for free from a lady who was going through a divorce and had a tough time finding a suitable, knowledgeable home for him. He has been more challenging but I’m not in a rush, and I feel he has a lot left to teach me. Q • Do you have any special plans for summer? A • Making hay, gardening, taking the kids to the wading pool and beach, maybe a couple little road trips. Q • What’s something about you most people would be surprised to learn? A • I play guitar. Q • What are you listening to these days? A • Currently I really like Mother Mother’s album “No Culture”. Very catchy songs. The kids like dancing to it. Q • What’s your favourite kids’ movie or TV show? Is there one that you just can’t stand? A • One of my favourite kids’ movies is Hotel Transylvannia. I can’t stand Caillou. Q • Summer, Winter, Spring, Fall - Do you have a favourite season? A • Summer! It doesn’t get better than a sunny summer in the beautiful Chase.

SD73’s grad season gets underway KAMLOOPS — It will be a busy June for School District 73 (KamloopsThompson) as nearly 1,000 students from 15 schools and programs get set to end their secondary school careers and move on to bigger things. The district will hand 970 students certificates of graduation this year. The first commencement exercise takes place tonight in Barriere starting at 6 p.m., when 28 students will cross the stage. In the coming weeks, Grade 12 students in Kamloops, Chase, Logan Lake and Clearwater will be similarly recognized. “This is an exciting time of year for all of us in the district,” said Bill Hamblett, SD 73’s Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Schools. “This is an important step for our young people. They are making a significant transition on their way to becoming adults and full members of our society. Of note this year, SD 73 will graduate 38 students from the renowned International Baccalaureate Diploma Program at Norkam secondary school, and more than 250 students who have taken courses or training in the district’s Transitions, Trades and Technology programs. Also, graduates were enrolled in 55 courses at Thompson Rivers University thanks to the TRU Start program, which allows Grade 12 students

to take two university courses in their last year of high school studies. As well as commencement exercises, there will be special celebrations of achievement, particularly the SD 73 Honours Banquet, which takes place May 30 at 7 p.m. at TRU. Approximately 75 students — the top five per cent of this year’s class by academic standing — will be recognized for their hard work and success. Planning to Support Youth in Chase & Area Submitted by Youth Action Committee

The Youth Action Committee would like to thank all the youth and community members who participated in the mapping activity and idea boards that were set up during the beginning of May. Many great comments and ideas were shared on how to support youth, as well as potential activities that would benefit the whole community. In an effort to move forward collectively, a planning dinner will be held on Wednesday, June 7th, at the Chase Curling Rink from 5pm-8pm. This is an opportunity for youth, service clubs,

and residents of Chase and surrounding communities to come together to identify actions and activities in a collaborative manner. This is an all ages session, and we encourage everyone with varying skills and interests to attend. Registration is required so the proper food arrangements can be made. If you cannot make the planning dinner but would like to volunteer with Youth Action Committee or have an idea or activity to support youth in the community, please get in touch. Please RSVP by June 6th to youth.in.chase@gmail.com

BILLET HOMES WANTED submitted by Lana Adamson

The Chase Heat will be arriving in town in August to start their 2017-2018 hockey season. Once the team has been selected the out of town players will need a place to live for the hockey season (September 2017-March 2018). The boys come from all areas of British Columbia and beyond and vary from 16 to 20 years in age. Some boys are still in school (these players attend Chase Secondary during their stay in Chase) and some have already graduated. What they all have in common is their love for the sport and their desire to provide Chase with many hours of exciting hockey. Being a billet family is

a rewarding experience and adds a whole new dimension to the otherwise dreary Chase winter. It is important that you are able to welcome these boy/boys into your home and provide him/them with healthy meals and a safe environment. This ’home away from home’ is important to enable the boys to be successful on the ice and in everyday life. Providing a smoke free living area is essential. If this opportunity sounds intriguing and you would like more information please contact Lana Adamson 250-574-3681
