A PASTORAL PERSPECTIVE:
Slow Down and Listen Our world comes at us so fast. Every moment there is new information, new worries, something different. Being informed is beneficial, knowing what is going on in our world helps us make wise decisions. But it all happens so fast. A friend of mine used to work for a radio station that repeated the news, weather, and sports every 15 minutes — including ads. This station offered so much of the basic information that we require on a daily basis in a really short period of time. This station was all about speed. And this speed was great when running out the door and wondering what the weather is going to be like today. But the problem is, we weren’t built for this sort of speed. When you think of the negative affects of that sort of speed, you might use words like exhaustion, frustration, or detachment. But there is something deeper going on: this speed hijacks the way our brains work to flood our life with shame. Shame is the emotion of unpleasant self-evaluation. Shame is the compulsion to hide or deny wrong doings. Shame activates attitudes and actions of defence and deflection; “I didn’t do anything” or “But they did…”. Shame creates in us actions of clutching, hoarding, fearful, condemning, consumptive, and ultimately violent. Shame hurts us, those around us, and it hurts the world we live in. Curt Thompson, a psychiatrist specializing in Interpersonal Neurobiology, describes shame as a response that separates activities in the brain from others. Shame isolates particular areas of function and neural activity of our brain from other areas. Basically shame shouts in our brain, drowning out our rational thinking and our other emotions like love and compassion. When we live at a breakneck pace, shame wins. “It takes less than three seconds for the neuroaffective effects of shame to register in the mind, changing the contours of our felt sensations and perceptions,” writes Thompson. “It takes anywhere to thirty to ninety seconds for us to fully receive the emotional ‘load’ of a compliment, of a bid for attachment, a gift of goodness or beauty
directed our way. For goodness and beauty to arise, time for dwelling is necessary.” That means it takes somewhere between 10 and 30 times longer for us to experience the effects of love and care — compliments, bids for attachment, giving of goodness and beauty — then it does for us to experience the effects of shame. When stimuli are coming at us so quickly, when we get a day’s worth of information in 15 minutes—and when we reach for our phone every time we have more than 10 seconds with nothing to peak our attention, we don’t have time to experience the goodness around us — not when shame has such a head start. We need to be intentional about allowing ourselves to process these things of beauty, so that they aren’t just drowned out by the constant shouting of shame. We need to dwell with goodness in order to experience this goodness. With all this in mind. I would like to share with you some good news, some information that brings comfort, which overcomes shame, which draws us out of ourselves and into embracing those around us. This news isn’t complicated; it won’t take long to share. It’s only six words. But to begin to grasp it, for this news to be effective we need to dwell in it, we need to sit in this news to allow it to reach into our neuropathways and change our thinking and change our attitude. This news won’t take long. But I am asking you to take a long enough to time experience the goodness of it. It’s going to take 30 to 90 seconds. If you’re like me, maybe you need to set a timer on your phone or on your clock. But when you’re ready, I’d like to share this life giving and life affirming news, even though I am asking for more time. Six words, two sentences, ninety seconds. When you are ready, when you can spare a minute and a half: You are loved. God Loves You. Don’t rush to another activity, a new worry, or more information intake. Don’t give shame a head start. Sit with those words for 90 seconds. Choose goodness and truth over speed and shame. Know that you are loved; God loves you.

News from First Nations by Carolyn Parks Mintz, Author & Journalist
CONGRATULATIONS! To Kukpi7 (Chief) Rosanne Casimir of Tk’emlups te Secwepemc, who was ranked No. 6 of 50 Canadians on Maclean’s Magazine Power List of 2022. To Adams Lake Councillor Shelley Witzky on being nominated as a “Hometown Hero” by the Shuswap Trail Alliance. THEATRICAL SHOWCASE “Echoes of the Homesick Heart” is a powerful new dramatic work, featuring Laura Michel of the Adams Lake First Nation, and based on interviews conducted across the Secwepemc Nation. Its multigenerational story explores one family’s connection and disconnection between language, culture, and community, as well as incorporating lived experiences and the real-life voices of youth and elders while celebrating their resilience. To rediscover what was lost and to move forward in understanding, each generation must learn from the other with the help of wily Trickster and teacher Seklep (Coyote). Performances run from June 2 to 11 at the Pavilion Theatre in Kamloops. SECWEPEMC LANDMARKS PROJECT Started in 2019 and led by Elders from Splatsin, Adams Lake, Neskonlith, and Little Shuswap First Nations, the Landmarks Project involves the creation of numerous sculptures representing the oral history, place names, and First Nations relationships to lands and waters within Secwepemculecw along its trails and adjacent to its waterways. The first sculpture will be unveiled at the Salmon Arm wharf in late June, with other Phase I sculptures installed in late summer or early fall—all of which have been designed by local Indigenous and nonIndigenous artists. Under the guidance of Elders Committees, Phase 2 of the project is underway and will involve two large and six smaller carvings for the Chase and Splatsin (Enderby) areas. Artists selected for this phase are Tania Willard, Hop You, Tony Antoine, and David Jacob Harder. Mentorship opportunities are also available for young artists to work with these established sculptors to
experience the creative process of design, fabrication and installation of stone art. BC GRADUATION REQUIREMENT As announced in March 2022, the provincial Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the First Nations Education Steering Committee, has implemented a new graduation requirement to take effect in the 2023-24 school year which will ensure all secondary students complete Indigenousfocused coursework before they graduate from BC’s K-12 education system. This step aligns with the Truth & Reconciliation Commission Call to Action No. 62, and follows B.C.’s November 2019 adoption—the first in Canada—of the internationally recognized standards of the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. BRINGING THE SALMON HOME This festival was held virtually on May 3rd and 4th under the auspices of the Columbia River Salmon Reintroduction Team and included information on Indigenous-led work with diverse partners to return salmon to the upper Columbia River, exploration of innovative approaches to eco-system restoration and cultural renewal, as well as presentations from Knowledge Keepers, artists, musicians, biologists, Elders and youth.
ADAMS LAKE INDIAN BAND (ALIB) Secwepemc Flag Flies in Salmon Arm Arena ALIB Councillor Joyce Kenoras has been working with the Salmon Arm Minor Hockey Association to have a Secwepemc flag displayed at the Shaw Centre in support of First Nations youth participating in its hockey programme. On March 20th, with Chief Lynn, Elder Lucy, drummers, youth carrying the flag, Mayor Alan Harrison, and SAMHA’s Cindy Cameron in attendance, the flag project came to fruition during an U9 tournament. Chase Literacy Program has a
NEW LOOK
This little fellow is a Bookworm
Dictionaries define bookworm as a person devoted to reading The nickname bookworm has had a negative connotation, referring to someone who is ‘nerdy’ or ‘boring.’ Someone whose nose is always stuck in a book Today almost all of us are ‘bookworms’ in a sense: our noses are stuck on our phones and electronic equipment. We spend hours ‘reading’ Facebook posts or learning about new apps. We communicate through texts; we do our banking and shopping and so many other things ……. all the while reading, using our comprehension skills, typing/ writing. It is for this reason we chose the Bookworm as our logo/brand to remind us that Literacy skills are a part of everything we do! We need your help! Please help us to name this fellow. He likes to go on adventures, to learn, and he loves trivia. (Watch for his trivia questions on our Facebook Page – Chase Literacy Program.) He is also kind and encourages everyone to remember to do ‘Acts of Kindness.’ You will be seeing lots of him and his family. Suggestions for his name may be submitted to literacyinchase@gmail.com
