ndustry professionals and local representatives from Chase businesses were treated to a fantastic day experiencing everything Chase, BC has to offer. Visitors from both the Lumby and Armstrong Chambers of Commerce, TOTA, Shuswap Tourism and many local businesses were hosted by delegates from Chase, including Mayor Rick Berrigan and Chase Chamber manager, Ali Maki. Some of the highlights of the day included an amazing canoe tour, led by Quaaout Lodge Cultural Coordinator, Tanner Quanstrom. The tour included a viewing of a traditional Secwepemc pictograph. Local historian, David Lepsoe gave participants a step back in time, in both his attire and photographs of the early days of the Village. Treetop

Flyers Zipline provided a healthy dose of adrenaline, encouraging participants to try our Flying Fox zipline, as well as the 100’, Screaming Eagle Swing. The only solar-powered amusement ride of its kind. Other notable stops were Chase’s beautiful lakeshore, skateboard park and Sunshore Golf Course. Participants were chauffered in specialized golf carts. Chase is the only community in Canada where golf carts are legal on Village roads. The day ended with a fantastic meal at Jack Sam’s restaurant at Quaaout Lodge, overlooking the beautiful Little Shuswap Lake. Chamber manager Ali Maki summed up the day, “Such an incredible opportunity to share with tourism representatives our little gem we call home!” More on page 10...

RE: Property Taxes

Checking our property tax bills for 2017 and 2018 clearly indicates that the mill rate for General Municipal Residential tax calculations was not raised for 2018 – as per the budget passed by Council last month. And in addition, the mill rates for all other levies

went down. Hence, despite our property’s increased taxable value as assessed by the province, our taxes are less than last year. Would suggest a math check might be in order for some folk. Great to live in Chase! James and Carolyn Mintz

Vernon, BC – Healthcare stakeholders from the North-Okanagan Shuswap gathered in Vernon today to share local perspectives on Canadian healthcare with MP Mel Arnold and the Honourable Dr. Kellie Leitch, Member of Parliament for Simcoe-Grey. With MP Dr. Leitch preparing to introduce a bill in Parliament that strengthens the Canada Health Act, this meeting provided an opportunity to hear local experiences and gain input on the strengths and weaknesses of Canada’s medical system. “I was very pleased with the turnout and the discussion here in Vernon today,” said Dr. Leitch. “What I heard was similar to what I have been hearing from medical professionals and patients across the country. There may be specific regional challenges, but overall people are saying that wait times are too long, there needs to be more accountability and that changes are needed to how we do healthcare in Canada.”

MP Arnold stated he was pleased to hear from various voices on the state of healthcare in the North OkanaganShuswap, and explore ways stakeholders can work together to develop strategies that improve the quality of care for local residents. “Some challenges facing healthcare in the North Okanagan-Shuswap are common to communities across Canada while others are more specific to our region,” said MP Arnold. “Today’s meeting strengthened my understanding of the needs and priorities for healthcare in our region and I appreciate Dr. Leitch and all the local representatives for taking the time to participate in this important discussion.” Attendees who joined in on the conversation included physicians, nurses, healthcare advocates and representatives from organizations such as the Shuswap Hospital Foundation and Shuswap Hospice.

Then the visitors headed out on an educational canoe trip with the Cultural Coordinator for Quaaout Lodge, Tanner Quanstrom, a tour of the underground winter home also referred to as a “kekuli” and a tour of Quaaout Lodge & Spa. We wrapped up the day with a networking dinner at Jack Sam’s restaurant followed by a fire, s’mores and storytelling in the winter home! Pinantan Elementary School Vying for Votes in BCAA Play Here Contest

Every year, BCAA gives three prizes of $100,000 to communities hoping to improve their play spaces in the BCAA Play Here campaign. Last year, the Chase Skate Park was excited to be chosen as one of the finalists but fell short of votes and didn’t end up winning any cash from the BCAA Contest. This time around Pinantan Elementary School has been named one of ten finalists for the awards. They are hoping to improve their school playground, which is severely lacking. Located about 30 minutes northeast of Kamloops, Pinantan Lake is a community of around 400 people with an elementary school housing 47 students. “Our current structures are very old and rusting. A few of the teeter totters are broken as well. If we won we would remove all the unsafe structures and replace them with a large safe playground that all the children could enjoy.” Pinantan Elementary is the only school in SD 73 that made the final ten. Each person can vote on four social media platforms every day until June 17th. Vote for Pinantan Elementary School at www.bcaaplayhere.com. “A revitalization like this would bring so much promise and opportunity to our community.”

Age: Five years old (we picked ground hog day for my birthday) Breed: My mom calls me an All Canadian but I think I am a Chihuahua Terrier mix... What is your favourite activity to do with your human? I love playing games with my mom... she calls it “dog agility” I just like to race my mom on a course with obstacles e.g. jumps and tunnels and there is even a teeter todder which is my favourite obstacle of all - it is a FAST game and I love to run and play too. Do you have any furry brothers or sisters? Yes I have a BIG little sister named Skye who is a bit of a frisbee nut and loves to swim and two other rather jumbo sized sisters Peanut and Bean I think they are called horses but they sometimes act like big dogs the way they jump about and play out in their big yard. Do you prefer bones or sticks? Definitely bones - it is in the food category Where is the best place to take a nap? In the sunshine :) Do you have a favourite toy?

Yes my Lotus Ball.. it also has some yummy treats hidden in it but I have to open it up with my paws to get them.. and then I bring it back to mom to refill and throw again - another FUN game to play. Where were you born? Somewhere in the States I think - I am a rescue dog and was brought to Canada to a rescue and is how I found my furever family How do you feel about cats? If they run I do too - right after them.. I can’t seem to control myself from not chasing them.. must be the terrier side of me. How do you like to burn off all that extra energy? I love to run as fast as I can :) and also enjoy hunting for field mice and chipmunks seem to want me to play with them too.. so I try to catch them but they always hide for some reason. What is the first thing you do each morning? I do my Jane Fonda stretches and then I look for my breakfast.. a girl has to have a good meal to start the day. Are you much of a water dog? Nope not even a bit... I have a bit little sister that handles the water play department in our house... I prefer to jump a puddle instead of walking through it
