Ingredients: 4 slices bacon, diced 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 onion, diced 2 carrots, peeled and diced 2 stalks celery, diced 1/4 cup all-purpose flour 4 cups chicken broth 1 cup 2% milk 1 head cauliflower, roughly chopped 1 bay leaf Salt & freshly ground black pepper, to taste 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley leaves Directions: Heat a large stockpot or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add bacon and cook until brown and crispy, about 6-8 minutes. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate; set aside. Melt butter in the stockpot. Add garlic, onion, carrots and celery. Cook, stirring occasionally, until tender, about 3-4 minutes. Stir in cauliflower and bay leaf. Cook, stirring occasionally, until barely crisp-tender, about 3-4 minutes. Whisk in flour until lightly browned, about 1 minute. Gradually whisk in chicken broth and milk, and cook, whisking constantly, until slightly thickened, about 3-4 minutes. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer until cauliflower are tender, about 12-15 minutes; season with salt and pepper, to taste. If the chowder is too thick, add more milk as needed until desired consistency is reached. Serve immediately, garnished with bacon and parsley, if desired.

"Cone Zones"

....Continued from page 3 Cone Zones are work areas set up by roadside workers to protect themselves and the driving public. Road-maintenance crews, tow truck operators, first responders, municipal workers, traffic control persons, construction crews, and other roadside workers all depend on drivers to respect the Cone Zone to keep their workplaces safe. Employers have a legal responsibility to ensure the health and safety of their workers and contractors along BC’s roads and highways, including:

• Ensuring their workers understand the hazards related to working at the roadside. • Providing their workers with training, equipment, supervision and resources to help keep them safe. Roadside workers can work safely by: • Knowing how to identify hazards and assess risks. • Following safe work procedures, including work zone set-up and takedown. • Wearing appropriate high-visibility clothing and other PPE.

• Reporting unsafe work conditions to their supervisor. Roadside work is a dangerous job—and spring and summer are the busiest times of the year for these workers. Drivers must remember to reduce their speed, pay attention, and be respectful of the roadside workers and their workplace, so these women and men can go home safely to their families at the end of the day,” said Al Johnson, Head of Prevention Services at WorkSafeBC:

A PASTORAL PERSPECTIVE: Are you ready? by Tyler Harper

Let’s be honest, COVID restrictions have been rough. Yes, we don’t face the sort of limitations that those in Australia or London have faced, we don’t even face the restrictions that other Canadians currently face. We have much to be thankful for. Case count continues to be lower per-capita and restrictions less severe in B.C. than many parts of the world. But this hasn’t been easy, for any of us. But it also won’t last forever. Vaccination is underway and health orders are already changing. Things will change and the restrictions we have lived with for 15 months will be no more. What do you look forward to the most? What about the ‘before times’, do you look forward to enjoying again? For me, I look forward to having company in our house again, I enjoy hospitality; whether it is a cup of coffee or a meal. There is something about eating and drinking together that brings a togetherness that I so miss. Maybe for you it’s dining out or a movie theatre or the ability to travel or go to those larger events: Music on the Lake, family gatherings, fairs. Getting back to normal is going to be a nice change. But there is a problem - normal wasn’t that great. Don’t get me wrong I don’t love the restrictions, but I just know that there is so much about ‘normal life’ that many of us didn’t actually love.

As things change we will experience what might be a once in a life time opportunity: create all new habits. Habits are formed by doing the something in repetition. We had habits before, and we’ve formed new habits over these past months of health orders. When things change —whenever that is— we will have the chance to form new habits, try new things, ask new questions. In the ‘before times’ many of us yearned for meaning in our lives. Asking what is the meaning of life; why am I here. Some of us hungered for real and meaningful connections with a hunger too deep to be satisfied by another human being. We had a need for a true friend to share our deepest feelings with. These are hungers and needs that can only be satisfied by God. Back in ‘before times’ we were so busy with normal that we weren’t able or willing to address these deep needs. This is the greatest opportunity that this re-start will offer. This might be the greatest chance we have in our life time to intentionally bring things that matter into our lives. But this won’t just happen, we need to reflect, and we need to plan. My neighbours, what do you want in your life when things open up and what are you doing to make that a reality? Which habits do you want to form and what steps do you need to take? Tyler Harper is the Pastor at Chase Evangelical Free Church 250-803-1676.

NOTICE

Water Main Flushing Program Chase Public Works will begin its new annual Water Main Flushing Program beginning June 7th, 2021 and completing on June 18th, 2021. With the introduction of our relatively new Water Treatment Plant in 2015 and the high quality of potable water within our distribution system, developing an annual flushing program will allow us to improve an already great product and reduce the amount of chlorine needed to maintain a minimal residual within the system and at its extremities. Flushing in the Spring allows us to take advantage of snow melt water and helps us to flush our storm water system at the same time, removing sediments that build up over time. Water spent to flush our water mains is de-chlorinated and repurposed for flushing catch basins, leads, mains and culverts. Why are we flushing our water mains? The flushing program will be conducted annually and will provide the following system benefits: • • •

Improved water quality. Improved system hydraulic capacity. Improved system operation by identifying weak or problem areas. • Improved/restored chlorine residual. • Decrease turbidity within the system when large volumes of water are used in such cases as firefighting and bulk water use. How does water main flushing affect your water? During the flushing process, low pressures and discoloured water may be experienced for short periods. Any discolouration is temporary and is not a health hazard. Village staff collect and test water samples for chlorine residual throughout the entire distribution system regularly to ensure that the water is safe for consumption. If any discolouration is noticed, residents are asked to open their out door cold-water taps (after flushing hours) and allow it to flow until the water becomes clear. It is important to note that even if flushing is not occurring directly on your street, the connecting streets in your area could be affected as well. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the Water Main Flushing Program, please contact the Village Office at 250-679-3238.
