Walking Our Spirits Home – A Sad But Necessary Event
I
JUST LISTED!
By Carolyn Parks-Mintz, Author, Journalist & Freelance Writer
t started where horrific abuse of Indigenous children started in the City of Kamloops—the residential school. Planned by the Adams Lake Indian Band (ALIB) to honour their members who had attended there and also as a healing experience for those whose relatives did not return, Walking Our Spirits Home, June 11-13, was arranged to spiritually return those lost to their resting place, and also to offer some restorative help to the many who have lived with trauma and hurt since leaving residential school. The event began at the Kamloops Industrial School (as it was called in 1890) which was under Roman Catholic administration and housed in a wooden building that subsequently burned down in a 1923 fire. Rebuilt as a brick structure, it would become the largest residential school in Canada, with a peak enrollment of 500
children in the 1950’s. The federal government took over the Kamloops Indian Residential School (KIRS) from the Catholic Church in 1969, and utilized it as a residence for First Nations students attending local day schools, until it was closed in 1978. A touching and emotive monument has been constructed directly in front of the main entrance to this former institution by a survivor of its many decades of operation. Upon receiving his Residential S c h o o l Settlement, (the late) Kenneth “Manny” Jensen eventually decided to use those funds in a concrete way. His family reports that Manny cared deeply about recognition of residential school survivors, although it took many years for him to speak of his own experience and the suffering he lived with. Walking Our Spirits Home
After much planning and consultation, a memorial was erected that bears the names of the grass-roots founding families of the Tk’emlups te Secwepemc community, of some former students, and the following: “This monument is dedicated to honor all survivors from the Secwepemc bands who attended the Kamloops Residential School, who all suffered the genocide period in history of the Kamloops Indian Residential School, and to honor all survivors who are not with us today, but are with us in spirit.” The memorial is also a symbol of the healing Manny experienced through his thoughtful project. It is sadly poignant that the recent discovery of 215 unmarked children’s graves adds to the sorrow and harm created at that school site, something still experienced intergenerationally. Standing next to the monument and when asked what “Walking Our Spirits Home” means to him and to his people, ALIB Kukpi7 (Chief) and former KIRS student Cliff Arnouse replies, “It’s about remembering the past, a lot of pain and unknowns. Even those who made it home were very changed—they left a piece of themselves behind. And for my people, it means recognizing what happened. Healing is something we have to do in order to move forward.” His message for governments and religious organizations is direct and emphatic. “Genocide took place here. They need to come and see what was done, acknowledge what happened to our people. This history should be taught in schools, as part of education about this country.” “And I’d ask non-Indigenous people how they’d feel if it were their children, if it had been their grandparents or parents. Governments need to be pushed to do the right things in an honest and truthful way.” Walking Our Spirits Home involved walking and travelling from Kamloops to the ALIB community near Chase over
a three-day period. Transportation was provided to return participants to their vehicles and to assist those who walked portions of the route. Snacks, meals and refreshments were provided enroute as well. The event, attended by hundreds from various First Nations communities as well as some non-Indigenous folk, began at the Tk’emlups te Secwepemc pow wow arbour with registration, traditional drumming, singing and prayers, and ended with an emotional closing event and a community dinner. Pipe ceremonies, sacred fire, smudging, cedar brushing to sweep off negativity, and bear dancers contributed to the reverence that permeated the three days. First aid, as well as mental and spiritual support, was available throughout the sensitive journey. The Walk concluded with heartfelt words from Paul Michel (Thompson River University Indigenous Advisor), Kukpi7 Arnouse, Kukpi7 Fred Robbins from the Esk’etemc First Nation, Chase Mayor Rod Crowe, and the event organizer ALIB Councillor Brandy Chelsea. Participants spoke of how emotional the event was, that tears were shed, and that those gone had truly been brought home because their spirits walked with them. Taking part in honouring ancestors, grandparents and parents was important to all, for undoubtedly there will be more unmarked graves found at residential school locations across this country. The drum is known as the heart beat of First Nations peoples. Let us hope their hearts have been somewhat soothed, that the recognition of so much last weekend heals some of their hurt, and allows them to go forward with determination. Supporting our Indigenous neighbours is the least we can do as a very dark chapter in Canada’s history is examined in long overdue bright light, and reparations are undertaken. For this is just the beginning ……
